"Ahaha... And after I went through all this effort to make a temporary body..."

She was doing her best to laugh, treating this like some kind of corrupted comedy. But even her laugh sounded painful and forced. When Seth said her name, the reality around her body cracked. As if made out of the most fragile stained glass, it carved away, revealing the young girl's true form.

The red that painted her hair blew away like scarlet dust. The illusion she summoned and kept up this entire time, even if it were at the cost of her own existence, was unwoven like an amateur's tapestry. Her false red-hair became brown once again. Her entire body was different behind this tempered illusion. She was a small girl, barely 4'6''. Even though she had been 15 years old the last time Seth saw her, she looked closer to ten or eleven.

Her real form was the opposite of threatening.

"...I guess you can say that 'I' am Hayate."

But it was never so simple, was it? Hayate didn't just die. She used up every last drop of her power to stay alive until she faded from existence. Death could be cheated, but what she did was more than simply die.

"...Or... I am what made 'Hayate', herself."

Hayate, the girl that controlled the unknown. With a single touch, she could toss someone into the mental world that they feared the most. With her hands, she could craft blades that pierced deeper than the body. And with her mind, she created an additional 'body'. A body made out of nothing but immaterium, until she finally faded.

But what was the unknown.. How could you control something that was, by definition, beyond understanding? She could sink people into the unknown. She could craft something out of the unknown. And in her final moments, she herself was nothing more than a mystery.

...What was more unknown than 'Death' itself? Isn't it, to those still alive, the greatest unknown?

...But when you reach it, doesn't it stop being a mystery? After all, if you 'reach' something, if you finally see something, with your own eyes, isn't the cat's box finally opened...?

A black coffin surrounded her. She was wrapped in boundless shadows, and impaled with countless blades. Shin's other attacks left an opening, but this was perfect. Every part of her body should be reduced to nothing by such an attack. It's a 'perfect' technique that can kill any human being. It surrounded her from every angle. There was no exit-

But there was no entry, either. This attack truly was a coffin. All the spectators would be able to see was a black coffin where the girl had stood before.

So when this cat's box opened, what would there be?

The girl that was previously there, was there no longer. Had his attack been successful? Had he scattered her into nothing but dust?

"...It's useless..."

It's all useless.

Where was Hayate?

"I am mystery. I AM the unknown. Making a closed room does nothing but feed me."

There she was.

Right behind Shin.

...When did she move? Was she caught, and did she then escape? Did she move before he even attacked? Was it when the spikes impaled her? Was it just as the shadowy box dissipated? Was it was it was it was it was it was it was it was it.

Keep thinking. Keep thinking.

Just keep thinking.

"Why don't you sink into the unknown yourself? Feel it. Feel it. Feel it."

There was no ground anymore. Instead, there was an infinite pool of blackness. To Seth, it was as wide as Shin was big. It could barely cover his feet.

But to Shin?

It was an endless expanse. A vast desert of nothing.

Slush

Something... moved inside of it. There was a gentle touch against Shin's foot. And then another. Touch after touch after touch after-

They grabbed him. He could run. He could jump. But these black hands would follow him. They would grab onto him. They would pull at him. More and more, more and more. He would start sinking. Break one hand, and two take its place. They just came at him. More and more. He would be dragged down. The 'water' would swallow him.

The strange liquid- it burned. Like it was lava, it crawled all over his body. It dragged him down further and further. The deeper he got, the hotter it got- and the more grip the hands could get onto him. This endless expanse of shadows was eating him alive. Eating him. Eating him.

Die. Die. Die. Die.

More hands started grabbing onto his body. They grabbed at his flesh and tore it away. He could feel it happen. He could feel himself being skinned.

Die die die die

But his body wouldn't suffer any damage. No. They hated him. They didn't want to grant him the dignity of a true death. They wanted him hurt. They wanted him to suffer. Forever, forever, forever.

DIE

The river whispered to him. It echoed into his ear. It begged for his death. A death it could never give him.

Just die, you worthless demon-hunter! For all the suffering you've caused, for all the pain you caused, die!

...This ballad of torture... it'd go on for so long. Countless demons ripping at him. All wanting their revenge. Revenge for things he did. Things he could do. Things his clan did. Things things things things.

He wouldn't be allowed to die until it's over...

...

...

...

Would it ever end?

"...Heh..."

...That felt good.

'Hayate' smiled.

It was an eternal torture that happened in an instant. Shin was still here. Seth was still here. Jack was still here. The only puddle had no depth. It wasn't even her immaterium-

He was standing in a slight puddle of rain.

...So what happened?

The 'unknown' is nothing more than attack on the mind.

What more could it be?

When the torture hit him, Shin fought back. He screamed in defiance at the demons that clawed at him. Cursing, biting and slashing away. Seeking his own vengeance, vengeance for his clan members that fell in the line of duty, for his grandfather, for every child that the creatures of darkness dragged away into the night to be devoured.

But he was eventually overwhelmed by the infinite horde and the young hunter's mind cracked under the strain of the seemingly unending torment. His mental self curling up into a ball and tucking itself away in a corner of Shin's mind to recover.

Shin fell to his knees with a strangled yelp coming form his lips, unmoving. His sword dropping from his hand and clattering to the ground. His knelt there for a few moments before he raised his hands slightly and began.....clapping?

"Not a bad effort for something that was born from a mortal." A unfamiliar voice rasped from Shin's lips. Shin? rose to his feet again and turned to face the spectre. "I would give it six out of ten. Plenty of pain for the flesh but none for the mind. The boy expects to die the way you showed him. Next time use his grandfather, that always riles him up."

Who was this mysterious newcomer? And why were they making small talk with whatever the hell just attacked Shin?

Since Shin was in no position to control his own body. His tenant Malphas was able to wrest control from the boy.

The demon stretched his arms as if he had just woken up from a nap. "However I must thank you for giving me a chance to stretch my legs. Even if only for a few hours."

Shin's mind was surprisingly resilient. It was already beginning to pull itself back together. But it would most likely take quite a while for it to do so. Malphas would be unable to enact any plans or cause havoc. If he did, Shin would most likely end his own life when he regained control.

Conjuring a chair from darkness, Malphas sat down, propping his feet up on a stool he conjured. He turned his head slightly and called out to Seth. "Care to enlighten us as to what this thing is mortal? Or are you going to continue standing there?" He jeered, intent on getting a reaction.

He then turned his attention back to Hayate? "You need to feed off others to sustain yourself. Is that all you intend to do? Survive? Or do you have something else planned?"

Malphas wasn't really expecting any answers from the pair, but he was hoping for some conversation. He had been locked away in Shin's mind for quite a while. He was starved for some form of stimulation.

To Shin, it may have felt like so many had happened, for a very long time.

To the rest however, everything would seem like it had either happened far too quickly, or nothing seemed to have happened at all. Or both, really, as the case was with Seth Ryouga.

The rain had been stopped by some unnatural force.

There was a coffin trapping Hayate.

Hayate was behind Shin.

Hayate was smiling. Shin had fallen... only for a moment however.

Shin clapped and congratulated Hayate.

...What the hell just happened?

He really hates dealing with this kind of stuff... If it's not something that he can understand or explain in less than ten words, or feel with his own fists hands, then he more often would rather not be involved in it at all. First of all, is she not 'Hayate'? Her way of speaking was odd, but it couldn't have been anyone else... A being made of the unknown...? How is that even possible when he knows she's Hayate?!

...She... She is Hayate... right?

She really is a mystery.

The young man ran his fingers through his hair. This is HARDLY his strong suit! All these time he's only learned to specialize in dealing with hard, solid and concrete evidence, not conceptual things like these! This is not how he had dealt with mysteries and cases back in the days!

...

Dammit, he's actually slipping into that old mindset again... "...I can't answer that question," The young man said as he hid half of his troubled expression with his hand, glaring somewhat disapprovingly at... the 'new' person. "Even then I don't like your tone... So I won't tell you anything either way,"

He recognized that tone to be one belonging to those who consider themselves to be beings of a higher status, looking down on those below them. He seriously hated that tone...

Even then he himself wanted to know Haya- ...'her' answer.

What... happened to you...?

If there was one person here who Matt was identifying with, it was definitely the girl. I mean, just bleeding out on the street, and when she tried to fix that little problem, people suddenly just got all up in arms about it and attacked you. If Matt had a scar for every time that happened to him... Oh wait, he did have a scar for each time that had happened.

That, and she was handling herself quite well and humiliating the guy who had tried to accuse him of being a monster. Honestly, it was warming Matt's heart to see Shin suffer for trying to attack this girl. Matt would finally leave his leaning position that he had taken before, and started walking towards the strange girl. He had his hands open and in the air, and the fact that he was shirtless showed that he didn't have sleeves to conceal anything in the first place.

When Shin started speaking in his strange voice, Matt took the liberty to talk himself, blatantly interrupting him as he talked to Seth. "Oi, Mr. 'Everyone is a bad person 'til I say so'. Shut the hell up for once, will ye? Nobody cares if ye need a throat lozenge or whatever yer problem is now." He'd shake his head after that little vocal detour, and focus back in on this "Hayate" thing.

"Anywho, so. Hope ye don't mind, lassie, but a bit of a pet hobby of mine is trying to understand the unknown. Hope ye don't find that a problem or anything. If ye do, well, quite frankly, I really don't care what ye think regardless. But onto the lil' social niceties. I'm Matthew Hazeman."

He would give the girl the opportunity to reply back before speaking again. "So, I noticed ye said earlier that ye needed to steal a little bit, and that ye seemed more interested in targetin' doggy there. So, by chance, did that happen to be a little bit of his powers for... Oh, let's just say regeneration or somethin' along those lines? Oh, and ye and Seth here seem to know each other as well, so... Perhaps one of ye could explain that somewhat? Just tryin' to make some of the unknown to me known is all."

What is this thing?
"For fuck's sake Seth just start talking already. A rather irate werewolf growled after turning back to his human form. "I don't like you either, but I shared important info. But if you just want to stand there with your thumb up your ass feel free to do so."

He turned to Matt. "Wolf not dog." He spoke evenly. "Make that mistake again and I'll tear your freaking arms off." Needless to say, Jack did not like that kind of derogatory comment.

He then turned to Malphas. "What condition is Shin in?" He knew his friend has some kind of spirit of demon inside of him, but this was his first encounter with the demon.

He finally turned to the girl. "Why did you initially attack me at the park? Why not ask people for small portions of power instead of attacking them and stealing it? Why not simply ask old friends of this Hayate girl for help? If regeneration is your goal then what are you going to do after that?"

"Hold it. Seth doesn't know what I am."

As the combined forces of wolf-man and shadow-boy combined to interrogate Seth, the girl decided to interrupt them. There was no need to grill him. 'Hayate' had an unusual attachment to him, even now that she had seemingly abandoned humanity. Her cyan eyes gave the demon and werewolf both a fierce glare, before looking at the immortal.

He seemed to be a lot more co-operative, as well as a lot less violent. Good. When he mentioned 'understanding the unknown', however, she couldn't help but laugh. It wasn't mocking, no. It was playful, and maybe kind of happy.

"Correct. The werewolf back there wounded me a while ago. Even though I was in a shell, the force of his blow split my skull open. I was genuinely injured, and I was just trying to leech off you two a liiiittle bit so the pain would stop."

Answer one. She did not intend to be violent at the very start.

"Buut... seeing wolfy here again, and realising you two were friends, I decided that I might as well swallow you whole."

There was no hesitation or even timidity in her voice. Even though her reaction might be quite disturbing to a common person, she was overly comfortable with admitting it. She didn't intend to keep this a secret, not at all. But she had a reason for not being completely honest...

Her eyes shifted to the werewolf again. Her expression lost the calm and acceptance it had when she was facing Matt, and switched to a vile loathing once more.

"Eh? You think I didn't do that. 'I', Hayate, am dead. If I went to ANYONE out of the blue, claiming that I was -her-, do you really think they would believe it?" Her eyes quickly shifted back to Seth. She didn't like looking at Jack, it made her angry, and she'd rather keep a blissful smile on her face when she was around Seth.

...She really seemed easy to please. The moment she broke eye-contact with Jack, she lost her disgust.

"Anyway, it's not that easy. I'm not in any danger of fading away. I have enough power to sustain myself indefinitely. That's not my goal." the spirit sighed, wagging her finger at Seth as she decided to answer his last question, now that all violence has been quelled anyway.

"What I want... is to bring her back. And for that, I need more power. If I just drain away small trickles of power from the one or two willing people I'll be able to find, it'll take decades." 'Hayate' sighed and shook her head. 'Decades' was an awfully long period of time. By the time Hayate would return, she would be completely forgotten!

"She's not 'dead'. People with my power can't truly die. She's permanently stuck in transit- stuck in the endless unknown. With my current power, I can neither give her her rest, nor bring her back. So I definitely need more."

Even if this spirit decided that Hayate didn't need to come back to life, she still needed more power to even give her an afterlife. To give her rest

"It's a painful place. You're stuck there, alone for your thoughts, for the rest time. It's not very pleasant. I don't want... to let her go through this...?"

Her expression shifted towards discomfort. Her tone sounded genuinely questioning. That was what she wanted to do, but for the first time, she seemed to question her own cause. Why go through so much effort, if you're clearly an immortal being.

"Heh. Whatever. That's my goal... and as for what I am?"

'Hayate' crossed her arms, thinking for a moment. Was she thinking of how to formulate her answer, or was she simply trying to think of a way to avoid answering?

"...Eh, I guess you can call me the 'Profound Darkness'. That'll do. I am Hayate's power, or rather- I am the being that gave Hayate her power."

Really? That was the name you choose for yourself? You couldn't make yourself sound any more evil if you tried! Her arms were crossed and she was looking up into the sky, clearly deep in thought...

"...But that doesn't really matter now, does it? Whatever I am, I am limited by Hayate. And furthermore, to bring her back, I'm going to drain as many people dry as I need to."

And there came a faint smile. She didn't care how many people had to suffer, as long as she reached her goal.

...Hayate really wouldn't approve, would she?

...Now that's better. To an extent. At the very least now he knows what's actually going on.

...It still doesn't help the fact that this is actually a pretty troubling, not to mention disturbing situation. I mean he was glad there doesn't need to actually be any more fighting, but...

The young man kept silent the whole time during her explanation, though the frown on him growing ever more pronounced with every word she uttered. Of what nature 'she' really is, for the moment, mattered little to him. A little extra flavor to accompany the sudden wealth of information being given to him. Not pleasant information, mind, but information nonetheless.

She had died. That much was certain, but she didn't... 'die'. She did not pass away. Her power... this walking, talking embodiment of the unknown, manifesting as the form of Hayate... was keeping her from being alive and dead. Stuck in a limbo, in the realm of the unknown where this... 'Hayate' came from.

Or something. Damn, it's still quite complicated, the young man couldn't help but curse through his hand, still covering his face. No, it's not that complicated... All 'Hayate' wanted was some help... a little donation from everyone (even though her method of acquiring them hadn't exactly been acceptable), to fuel herself so she could give her a proper rest.

...Or bring her back...?

No... wait, is he thinking it would be nice to have her back... alive and well...?

That's not good, he can't... he can't think like that, that would violate the law of nature itself... The dead should stay... dead. They can't be brought back to life... Hayate should have died...

...But she said she never died...

Is it... alright then...?

I mean, if it means... if it means one less person would die...

How many people he would have loved to see alive right now too...

Argh...

...

"...Would you mind... if we visit her...? I mean, right now?" The young man finally said after a very long silence. His hand slid off his face, an expression of resignation replacing the look of trouble he had been wearing the whole time. He sighed, putting his hand in his pockets as he looked up at the sky. A bit more pause, but much shorter this time, before he walked on ahead either way.

Destination, the grave of Hayate Kokuroi. "Could I ask you to come too?" The young man called out to those he had left behind, though not actually bothering to specify whom he was addressing. "It's a request from a stranger... to pay respect to... an old friend,"

He hesitated. He scratched the back of his head, before continuing to walk. But not before calling out once more to 'Hayate'. "And could you let the rain fall again? It's very cold up there, they won't be happy being kept there for so long they'll freeze up,"

He also doesn't like snow, so he'd rather not have them falling as such when it's still so far away from winter.

Seriously, Matt did not see what Shin's and Doge's problems with this "girl" were. So far, it seemed to him that she was just as rational and understanding as he would have been in such a situation. Sure, maybe she stole powers. But hey, one of Matt's major claims to fame was that he had made himself into something that could eat people, and he wasn't a completely horrible person. So it was best to not immediately judge on this account.

So he'd just shrug, continuing to smirk. He'd wave off Jack's correction, making sure not to take his eyes off of Hayate in the meantime. "Dog, wolf. Either way, ye end up with a stupid furball who's way too eager to please. More of a cat person anyways." He'd let the comment lie there as Seth then said his bit. Matt's smirk would transition into a smile.

"Sure thing laddie," he would say, his tone cheerful. "I don't have anything else to occupy me time tonight."

The being moved her left hand to her hip, moving her head up towards the sky as Seth filed his request. His request definitely wasn't unreasonable. It wasn't that strange to desire to visit the grave of a friend, but would Hayate really be happy with that? She was one of those people that didn't want to be forgotten as she was, but...

Well, she didn't want people to be sad! The image of visiting one's grave wasn't a happy one, not at all...

"Hmm... That should be fine."

'Hayate's' hand moved up towards the sky, vanquishing the clouds by Seth's request. The rain had already frozen to hail, pelting the scene with a torrent of ice. The shadows that governed the sky quickly wrapped around her palm, before fading completely into her body.

In their place... was a golden key, the size of her palm.

That key... was special.

"...Please don't stare too much, though. I don't think she would want you to see her in this sorry state."

Her body turned, and she pressed the key forward, into an invisible lock. A loud click rang through the air, before the air itself turned golden.

Golden and... liquid?

The entity stepped through the luminous gate, beckoning her left hand at Seth and Matt to tell them to follow her.

At the other side of the gate... was a single room. The ground was the strange black immaterium that followed the girl's every call, while the sky was a pure white void. It seemed to be boundless, but even staring too much in one direction could cause a headache. Luckily, the ground and sky both seemed much more out of focus than everything else she had summoned, as it was a lot less grotesque and painful.

A short distance to the front of this 'Hayate', stood a transparent casket, one definitely different from the one Hayate was buried in. It was completely filled with liquid, covering the girl from foot to toe. She was still wearing the clothes of her own funeral, although they had clearly decayed in the long time she had been wearing them.

The girl herself... was almost unrecognizable. The liquid, that was supposed to keep her in a stasis, could not completely protect her from the wear of time. Her already slim body had lost most of its fat, her skin being nothing more than a thin mask for her bones. Her brown hair had lost all of it's shine, now completely white bar the very tips of her hair. Her eyes were open but lifeless, the cheerful, cyan glow that usually governed her eyes had completely dulled.

"...I think you can see why I'm in a rush. It was significantly draining to even get her to this state. I can't keep her body stable forever, and without a body..."

'Hayate' let out a pained sigh. The contrast between the illusional girl that imitated Hayate's body, and her actually slowly decaying remains itself... was quite painful to see, even to her.

This is not what he had expected and he almost regretted asking for it.

Of course it wouldn't be tactful if he actually said it, which is surprising because who would've thought that even he actually knows how to take care of someone's feelings. There was no helping the shocked and horrified expression however...

Seeing people die is one thing. Seeing the dead, decaying body of someone he knew is another... He never would've thought he'd... ever see her in this state. ...Or anyone else that he knew of, really...

Is this what happens to people when they die, six feet under...?

The young man wiped his eyes with his hands, before covering his mouth with a somewhat troubled sigh. He also looks troubled. "...I-I'm sorry..." He couldn't help but blurt it out. He wasn't sure whom he was apologizing to, or what he was apologizing for. To Hayate for making this unreasonable request? The Scottish that he had to be here?

...No. This won't do.

"...Hey Hayate... Long time no see," He said with a weak grin and a wave of his hand, as he slowly made his way towards the transparent coffin. "You're... a lot smaller than you were last time I saw you..." The young man approached her, placing a hand as though trying to pat her head... unfortunately separated by the invisible coffin. "...You're very strong, you know... She said you didn't even die..."

...Is there any way they could help her... someone, please ask, or tell him...

Matt was hardly an easy individual to move. Between his training as a Familiar, the Homunculi he had killed, his own trials to become a Homunculus himself... The Scotsman had been through a lot. It was no small wonder he was often so dismissive of people like Shin and Jack, people who so clearly didn't understand the world in the way that only someone who had trailed through a line of atrocities and horrors could. How could he take such stupid, simple-minded fools seriously?

But one would have to be a real monster to remain unmoved by what was before him now. The smile that had been on his face when he had initially stepped through the door to this place was gone. For the first time since his arrival at Hyakuji, Matt looked horrified. He had first thought that the power stealer had simply been using some ruse to lower their guard so that she could take their powers with less of a fight. But now.... Not even the most twisted of minds would use something like this to lure someone in.

What's more, this was a situation that Matt was more than familiar with from first hand experience. Trapped in a place devoid of sensory input, unable to move even the smallest bit, on the precipice between existence and oblivion, being aware of your state, waking up from a self-induced torpor and memories of your past to a living nightmare, one that no amount of struggling could free you from....

Perhaps Shin and Jack wouldn't understand what this girl was going through, but Matt did. And he would not let anyone go through this sort of fate, not if there was something he could do about it.

Hayate couldn't hear Seth. She was physically dead, nothing but a corpse. Her consciousness lingered and was tied to her corpse, but she couldn't percieve anything. Did Seth... really delude himself so hard as to think he could actually reach out to her!? The emotion in his voice, the way he was moving closer... was he really trying to reach out to her?

"Mmm... She'll wake up. Maybe she can even hear you, right now..."

But not all illusions existed to be crushed. Really, if hoping that she could somehow hear these words eased Seth's worries, then there's nothing wrong with believing it, right?

The Profound Darkness had raised her left hand. Countless black blades formed behind the gate that they had entered through, ready to skewer the pair. It wasn't like anything she said was a lie, it was simply that she needed more power. And these two were the perfect prey. Now that they were in her Golden Land, now that they were so close to Hayate's body, they would be the perfect prey...

With a sigh and a snap of her fingers, the countless blades diappeared.

She couldn't.

"You know.. I'm almost there. With a little bit of help, from you two, I can bring her back."

She lowered her hand and moved closer, pressing her hand on Seth's shoulder. Even though her hand had feeling, it seemed like it had no weight. In this 'dimension', there was no need to focus on keeping her body complete. There was no risk of her being, say, blown away by the wind by keeping her form so incomplete.

"Honestly... Seth, you're really strong, aren't you? Just you alone should be enough."

If they did it willingly, it'd be better. There's no way Hayate would forgive her attacking Seth to bring her back... Her face turned to Matt, smiling at his wordless expression.

"I'm almost there. She can really be saved..."

'Hayate' looked back towards 'her' body, and smiled.

There was no choice, they were caught in her dimension. Hayate would forgive her if they outright refused to breathe life into her, right? What kind of person would not save someone, if there was nothing they had to permanently give up?

Even though she acted soft and kind, it was truly checkmate.

...Even if it wasn't a checkmate... "You know you could've done it when I wasn't paying attention,"

It'd hurt him a lot less that way. Probably.

...Yeah, he know he's doing it again, they don't have to remind him of it over and over. This guy has a very severe case of hoarding and shouldering so many responsibilities, even ones completely unrelated to him, all by himself despite how many times he said he wouldn't.

There are even some that said he would kill himself one of these days, for constantly acting like this.

He can't help it. He's strong, and they're weak. The strong should always take care of the weak.

God knows what made him into this kind of person. He himself doesn't know, nor does he care honestly.

The whole time, his eyes never left Hayate. "...You shouldn't hesitate," He said to the Profound Darkness. "Do what you think is right, and always be proud of your choices, even if you end up being wrong,"

Go on.

Matt was broken out of his stupor when he heard the girl snap her fingers. The Homunculus shook his head as the others spoke, making sure to clear his thoughts. It was time for him to actually do something to help now. "OK, right then. Let's get about to spitting in death's face, shall we? And quickly, before I change my mind."

The hand that had pressed onto Seth's shoulder moved down, gently trailing down his spine, towards the middle of his back. It gently rested there for only a few moments, before it started to phase through.

It was unpleasant. He could feel her ghostly palm slowly eek through his skin, the slight movement of her fingers 'tickling' him from the inside. While her hand wouldn't cause any damage, it would definitely feel like it truly pierced him.

"...Stay still, Seth."

Her hand pressed onto Hayate's glass coffin. While there was no wound, 'darkness' dripped from Seth's body like blood would. The same 'shadows' that the Profound Darkness subjugated were now flowing from his body, and into the coffin. The transparent liquid that filled it would slowly become black...

A similar treatment awaited Matthew, although his treatment was far less painful. A pair of hands would wrap around the both of his feet, and a strange feeling would creep up his body. It was a strong cold, or rather, it was heat leaving his body.

These two willing subjects were enough. 'Power' would abandon their bodies, and it would be replaced by nothing but a void. For just a short while, Seth and Matthew would become normal humans, or as 'normal' as they could be without endangering their lives.

Powerless and empty. For just a little while, they could play the role of normal humans. Even if Matthew hadn't been one for the longest, he would finally be able to taste normality again.

The metavirus inside Seth's body- it would be swallowed into that same emptiness. The strongest could finally become the weakest again. Did he even remember how it was, to be a normal human? One without powers, one that couldn't protect anything. But without his powers, he wasn't cursed, right?

"...This'll be enough."

This coffin was filled to it's brim. A tiny trickle of the black liquid even overflowed from its very edges. Hayate's entire body was covered in that black immaterium, leaving her visage completely hidden.

Crack

The glass cracked from top to bottom.

Crack

The glass cracked from side to side.

Crunch

And finally, the coffin broke. 'Hayate' pulled her arm out of Seth's now-drained body, and the real Hayate fell forward, free of her coffin.

...Her body looked no different than it did earlier. It was still decayed. It was still sick and warped beyond that of a human.

Did it... really work?

The only semblance of 'life' she could gave was a faint twitch of her body.

Did it... really, really work?

The Profound Darkness smiled.

It better have worked.

The Golden Land started to fade. The endless expanse was quickly replaced by the city street they just departed. Nothing had changed...

...Bar the small girl that had been brought back from the dead.
