The soldier saw his plan and raised his swords to block. Gaius' kick connected with the staff and it cracked, but his leg was cut as a result. The shadow writhed and the standard bearer let out a howl.

"OuR BaNnEr! ThIs InSuLt WiLl NoT StAnD!" he exclaimed, rushing Gaius in a fit of rage, his swords poised to attack. He had eschewed defense as well and was going for the kill. It seemed Gaius had struck a nerve when he attacked the banner.

Gaius felt the pain shoot through his leg as the swords managed to cut into his leg, it seemed like his leg was still able to move as he tested the movement with it. The Legionnaire's rage brought him back to the battle, it seemed like if he kept attacking the staff then the legionnaire would fight in a more feral state which would leave more openings for him to take.

Placing a hand on his sheath, Gaius prepared for the oncoming attack. Dodging the brunt of the attacks leaving small scratches on him he drew his blade after he got past the legionnaire's defense.

The blade's strike this time was aimed to sever the staff in two, Gaius wanted to see what would happen if he managed to take it out. If it didn't stop the legionnaire then he could always just proceed to use Terramancy without any problems.

The standard bearer leapt back to avoid the strike but found himself on the edge of the platform again. There was nowhere to go now.

"GrRrRr! ViCtOrY Or DeAtH!" he screamed, leaping forward, intent on finishing Gaius with his last attack. Even though he was rushing Gaius head on, the banner was still held back so as to protect it. The two swords he held came slashing across in an X pattern.

The bearer managed to avoid his strike once more, Gaius was starting to get extremely tired of this fight both physically and mentally. While his opponent had shown that he was a durable opponent, he really did not know when to quit. He sheathed his blade again and prepared for the legionnaire's attack. It seemed like once again he was charging Gaius with little care for defense, it was times like these were Gaius had to slightly envy zombies and the like who didn't care that much for injuries.

It seemed like the creature would guard the banner incredibly effectively, from the looks of it destroying the banner was the first order of business. After that he would be able to effectively finish of the legionnaire with his terramancy, even if it was sheer by overpowering the foe completely

Gaius concentrated for a moment as the legionnaire close the gap between them, at the last second he stepped to the left and circled around the legionnaire, barely dodging the strikes aimed at him. He draw the blade in a striking motion in an attempt to once more sever the staff, this time the legionnaire couldn't jump back otherwise he'd go straight off the platform tumbling into the abyss below.

Gaius' blade struck true, severing the staff cleanly. As his blade passed through it, a shadowy mist began to escape from the staff. the same mist also began issuing from the standard bearer's mouth as well as the mouths of the various zombies that were still in good enough shape to have mouths.

As he watched, they began to crumble away, turning to dust which blew away in the breeze. The standard bearer fell forward, his legs and extra arms slowly crumbling away to nothing. "AhH... At LaSt... PeAcE..." it said as it's body and head began to crumble as well.

When at last the body of the legionnaire had crumbled away, all that remained was a copper ring with a circular bulge on the top like a sealing ring. The indentations indicated something went there... but what?

Gaius frowned as he heard the last words of the legionnaire, it seemed like they had been taken from the rest to participate in this. One of the few things that really pissed him off was disrespect for the dead, if that sort of situation was the case for the rest of whatever this test of strength was then he'd prove himself strong and tear the whole system down. Reanimating people just to serve as playthings did not suit him well.

He reached down and picked up the ring before giving it a look over. He wasn't sure what it was but whatever it was it seemed likely that it would be his only real way out of there. He didn't want to remain any longer then he had to after hearing those words from the legionnaire. He wanted to get out of the area and calm down, currently he was furious that someone had gone and animated people just for that purpose.

A bright light suffused his vision and he found himself back in the same room as before, facing the very man who had recruited him. The man seemed pleased.

"Congratulations. The 4th Legion can be a troublesome first opponent for new gladiators, but I had a feeling you possessed talent." he said to Gaius, "But... I sense you are upset." he noted.

Even when he teleported back to the room he was in initially in Gaius frowned. He was still a bit annoyed and when the man pointed out he was upset he growled. "Of course I'm upset." His eyes stared daggers at the man. "You or whoever you were working for took away the peaceful rest of those soldiers so that they could simply be pieces in this game."

"The dead deserve more respect then that." He placed down his blade on the ground, looking around the room. "Is there anything else you want?" There wasn't much point sticking around in the room when he had completed his challenge.

Crossing his arms he waited for the man's response, he would maintain civility this time but god help them when he came at them in full force. Unfortunately he couldn't do anything about it for now, he had to play along in the game that they had invited him to if he wanted to stop it.

The man steepled his calloused fingers. "I see. You are right to bemoan their fate, but they have long since been released from their curse. What you fought was nothing more than a memory of an event which took place." He closed his eyes and opened them a moment later.

"The 4th Legion was the name of the warriors you fought. They were among the Emperor's finest troops and their standard was their pride. Their victories eventually earned them the title of 'the Immortal Legion' and they often boasted of how even Hades feared their charge." he shook his head, "But such arrogance does not sit well with the gods, and so Hades cursed their standard so that all those who marched under it would never die, though their bodies would rot and decay. What you fought this night was the result of that curse."
