"Oh Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Not one of my favourites, but a decent read none the less. It's considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. It's is comparable to Shakespeare on English literature." Shin decided to speak up from the back of the class.

He shrugged tryong to remember as much as he could about the book. "If I remember correctly, it follows hundreds of characters. Mostly feudal lords and their retainers, who tried to replace the dwindling Han dynasty or restore it"

Spike didn't really know anything about 'books' but he had ended up in this class anyways. It was clearly something he could just casually sleep through. And hearing about it it seemed even worse. The most he would read was a shounen manga, and even then he expected most of it to be about brawls.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms was some story about Chinese Lords and stuff. It was probably some boring story with lots of intrigue and that sort of thing. How Spike's knowledge of such things was so vague and wrong was hard to say. Perhaps the class would guide his mind to a brighter place. At least that was what his mom had suggested.

"Isn't it just some boring old book?" That was Spike's definition of literature so he said it aloud.

Meiakki looked at the book she didn't know much about the book itself what she did know came from her favorite anime Ikki Tousen.

"Mew" she gasps every character in Ikki Tousen had a counter part from the Romance of the Three Kingdom Book.

She turned from her cat form into her human form and took a seat in her desk. "That's a good choice Sensei" she said with a smile.

"Ah, someof you are familiar enough," Hiro replied to Dawn, Shin and several others comments before moving on to Spike's disappointment, "Though I'd say it's far from boring. We won't be delving too deep into this one, but I wanted it for our first class to help set the tone." As he continued explaining, Hiro grasped up the book from his desk.

"Spike's feelings are pretty common though, I wouldn't say to feel bad," he continued, "Books come off boring to the average person. Why read when you could watch the story unfold? Why read when you could play a game?" I want to push past that and spark your interest.

"This book, it's attributed to Luo Guanzhong and has an unusual quality about it," Hiro added excitedly, "Its story can be considered equal parts an accurate historical account while also myth and legend. It charts the turbulent years at the end of the Han Dynasty. It does follow many characters, but ultimately they relegate around three banners... the three kingdoms of the title... Wei, Shu and Wu."

"There's one particular scene I want to focus on for our class today," Hiro smirked as he began moving towards the point of the lecture while flipping open the book, "Early into the epic tale, the warlord Dong Zhuo seizes control of the imperial capital Luoyang under the pretext of protecting the emperor and abuses this position to great extent. His actions force about attempts on his life and eventually incite the infamous Cao Cao to ally many across the region to build up towards a major conflict to dispose of the tyrant that gathers together many of the major players for the rest of story. The ultimate plan, having gathered many under a united coalition through an imperial edict, was to enact a massive strike at Hu Lao Pass overrunning Dong Zhuo's forces and capturing him."

And thus, Hiro began to read aloud setting the scene:

Li Ru summed up the situation, saying, "We have lost our best leader, and the rebel power has thereby become very great. Yuan Shao is at the head of this confederacy, and his uncle, Yuan Wei, is holder of the office of Imperial Guardianship. If those in the capital combine with those in the country, we may suffer. Therefore we must remove them. So I request you, Sir Prime Minister, to place yourself at the head of your army and break this confederation."

Dong Zhuo agreed and at once ordered his two generals, Li Jue and Guo Si, to take five hundred troops and surround the residence of Imperial Guardian Yuan Wei, slay every soul regardless of age, and hang the head of Yuan Wei outside the gate as trophy. And Dong Zhuo commanded two hundred thousand troops to advance in two armies. The first fifty thousand were under Li Jue and Guo Si, and they were to hold River Si Pass. They should not necessarily fight. The other one hundred fifty thousand under Dong Zhuo himself went to Hu Lao Pass. His counselors and commanders---Li Ru, Lu Bu, Fan Chou, Zhang Ji, and others---marched with the main army.

Hu Lao Pass is fifteen miles from Capital Luoyang. As soon as they arrived, Dong Zhuo bade Lu Bu take thirty thousand soldiers and make a strong stockade on the outside of the Pass. The main body with Dong Zhuo would occupy the Pass.

News of this movement reaching the confederate lords. Yuan Shao summoned a council.

Said Cao Cao, "The occupation of the Pass would cut our armies in two; therefore, we must oppose Dong Zhuo's army on the way."

So eight of the commanders---Wang Kuang, Qiao Mao, Bao Xin, Yuan Yi, Kong Rong, Zhang Yang, Tao Qian, and Gongsun Zan---were ordered to go in the direction of the Hu Lao Pass to oppose their enemy. Cao Cao and his troops moved among them as reserve to render help where needed...

"Imagine it," Hiro said with a hint of wonder, "These two titanic forces gathering up and moving... almost hurtling towards a conflict on such a massive scale. Can you picture the scene?"

Dawn smiled as she was proven right. She wasn't entirely sure on whether or not the information was true but it seemed like her guess in the dark had paid off and she had managed to correctly state the information that she had presented whilst being accurate at the same time.

Listening intently to Hiro's reading the scene began to set in Dawn's mind. Rows and rows of soldiers numbering easily in the hundreds if not in the thousands. Moving across the land like a swarm but still managing to regain organization and elegance to a degree.

The more she thought about it the more suprising that armies managed to maintain formations in the days before easy communication was used. It would be difficult to move such a large number of people by voice alone, she couldn't help but be impressed by the generals of old.

Meiakki was doodling in her notebook as she listened to her teacher reading when asked to picture the scene she held up her notebook page

it had poorly dawn stick figures and it wasn't every artistic but the drawings she drew had key points of what Hiro said

  • the doodle on top left corner of the page was a picture of a stickman with a cap and a helmet with horns on it that was suppose to the warlord Doug Zhuo standing on top of a large building the building labeled "imperial capital" in sloppy handwriting the stickman had a little stick sword in his hand as he was rising it up above him to show him conquering it.

  • the doodle in the top right corner of the page was a picture was the same stick figure from before but behind bars now showing his capture

  • below the doodle on the left middle of the page was a figure of Li Ru giving a speech with a speech bubble saying what Hiro said he summed up the situation as "We have lost our best leader, and the rebel power has thereby become very great. Yuan Shao is at the head of this confederacy, and his uncle, Yuan Wei, is holder of the office of Imperial Guardianship. If those in the capital combine with those in the country, we may suffer. Therefore we must remove them. So I request you, Sir Prime Minister, to place yourself at the head of your army and break this confederation." in the same sloppy handwriting.

  • below the doodle on the right middle of the page was a figure of the two generals Li Jue and Guo Si standing before a bunch of circles that were suppose be the heads of theirs soldiers as they gave orders

  • covering the entire bottom of the page was a picture of stick figures invading a city from the left and the right including some badly drawn horse and swords and bows and arrows as they attacked the city that was just some rectangular shape buildings label "capital luoyang"

"Like this sensei?" she asked looking up at Hiro.

Jaret could picture the scene very well. He had seen some rather large battles during his life in Hell. All he had to do with what Hiro described was increase the numbers.

He could imagine it vividly. A swarm of human warriors, clad in armour. Marching towards certain death for many of them. All at the behest of lords who should solve their problems by fighting each other one on one.

.....Let it be known that Jaret prefers to do things in a simple manner. Using armies when something could be solved more easily with one on one combat baffled the demon.

Yuki listened and yawned.

"Armies and war are interesting stop yawning" said Shimei in her head.

"But it's just a book" said Kaboto in her head.

Yuki yawns again and Yurei got mad at Yuki for her disrespect to the story.

"Yurei Chop!" She said bringing down her book of Green Mile hard on Yuki's head.

"Oww!" Yuki cried in pain rubbing her head as her hoodie covering her long white hair fell off.

"What was that for you ditz!" she yelled as she glared at Yurei with her one good eye.

"Pay attention Yuki" said Yurei she was a ditz but she was serious about books and stories and she hated people finding them boring.

Lilica would begin to recede behind her desk as Hiro read from the sheaf of contracts. She could recognize that it was supposed to be Storytelling, but... Doing it from a bundle of contracts like that, without the guidance of a true Storyteller was just dangerous as far as Lilica was concerned. You could get caught up in someone else's story far too easily in such a way!

And, of course, she could already see others showing the telltale signs of getting lost in the story. One was even making visual representations of the plot! Did these characters truly think that such an action could be safe?! There was no way this could end well, no way at all!

Of course, while Lilica looked actually scared, the Toadies seemed to be rather happy with this turn of events. They were all sitting at the edge of their seats, gleeful looks in their eyes as Hiro read. They were even beginning to draw pictures of their own when Hiro asked his question.

Emmet tried his best to take the teacher's request seriously, he really did. It just seemed like his attention was always drawn away by something. He would begin to picture a sweeping grandiose battle, a fight against a tyrant....and then someone would shimmy in their seat and it was just gone. Every little sound and movement seemed amplified, he couldn't focus! This had happened before, he knew. It was just nerves getting to him.

He took a deep breath. Maybe if he went a little closer in to the action? For want of a better idea, he imagined what it might be like to be a grunt on the battlefield. He pictured the feeling of marching towards the enemy. Would he have been scared? Probably. What would it have been like to fight, to know you probably weren't going to make it home. What if he had friends, family? What if he knew the enemy felt the same...

If nothing else, Emmet had succeeded in ruining his mood.

"Ah well," Hiro was taken by surprise from the sudden doodle sketch from Meiakki, "I suppose it's a start..." A look of concern on his face, Hiro began to pace the room a bit as he thought things over in his head. Was he losing them already? Drawings. Somebody was already yawning. Several faces about the room looked hardly engaged let alone enthused.

"I imagine some of you are following me," Hiro finally spoke up slamming the book closed in his grasp to draw everyone's attention, "But I'm greedy and I want all of you to pay attention in my class. I was prepared for this. Yes, it took half the night but after combing through an extensive library of magical tomes and research, I crafted the perfect spell for this class to help illustrate my point!"

"Remember the passage I just read!" Hiro shouted triumphantly as the room began to shake slightly, "Just imagine it!" Suddenly, the book lifted from Hiro's grasp and flung itself open to the page he had been reading on. Magical energy began to swirl about the room and into the book itself as a large translucent sphere began to form just above the pages and start expanding.

Hiro Tsukasa, meanwhile, was mumbling every so softly the proper incantation he had devised. "You see," Hiro began to explain as he allowed the process to gather more energy, "This spell will take the word on the page and the power of all your imagination to show us the story as it is envisioned!" A book isn't as exciting as watching a movie. It was a common complaint these days. Maybe it was cheating that debate, but Hiro was going to MAKE it just as exciting.

Or so he had planned.

Mumbling on the final few verses of the spell, Hiro stumbled over the last two lines. In Magic, not unlike literature, words are everything. Words are power. And thus, using them improperly usually brings bad results. Bad results, in this instance, like the sphere that had been forming suddenly exploding and engulfing the room. Faster than one could blink, everybody present had vanished. Hiro. The Class. The giant book that held the Romance of the Three Kingdoms slammed onto the ground page open where they had been reading from.

Everything was silent. Minutes passed.

And then the door flung open triumphantly. "WAHOOO~" Yuki Unsere announced her entrance flailing her arms into the air, "Your adorable servant has arrived to help with class~"

Posted Image

"Err," tiling her head, Yuki glanced around the room quickly, "Isn't this the room..." Rushing about she saw most of the desks had objects on or around them. Hiro's desk had his notes. There was an open book on the floor. The class was all here except for, well, the people. Puzzled, Yuki approached the open book on the floor and picked it up. Letting out a puzzled sigh, she began to read from it:

Tiger Trap Pass is fifteen miles from Capital Luoyang.

So nine of the commanders---Wang Kuang, Qiao Mao, Bao Xin, Yuan Yi, Kong Rong, Zhang Yang, Tao Qian, Hiro Tsukasa and Gongsun Zan---were ordered to go in the direction of the Tiger Trap Pass to oppose their enemy. Cao Cao and his troops moved among them as reserve to render help where needed.

Of the nine, Wang Kuang, the Governor of Henei, supported by Hiro Tsukasa's force was the first to arrive, and Lu Bu went to give battle with three thousand armored horsemen. When Wang Kuang had ordered his army, horse and foot, in battle array, he took his station under the great banner and looked over at his foe....

====

[Somewhere Else]

They had been marching for some time. But they had finally arrived at their goal: Hu Lao Pass. Before them stood a massive gate with battlements built between the hills rising throughout the area. If they had any hope of pressing the attack upon Dong Zhuo, then they needed to break through the gate stationed here.

And, rather unfortunately, Hiro Tsukasa and his class now found themselves placed within these tumultuous times. Their clothing and objects they owned changed befitting of the era. Hiro himself was garbed in flowing black robes and where the book had rested in his grasp earlier at the start of class, he now seemed to be holding some sort of iron-fan. Glancing around puzzled, he noted the rest of his students were in a similar state. It was then that their awareness of the situation would expand. They were marching with a literal army. To make matters worse, riding up was a rather surly armored fellow that was quite clearly of some importance. Whispers erupted in the ranks of soldiers and one name kept coming up: Wang Kuang.

"The path is almost cleared for our cause!" Wang Kuang shouted bravely, "And yet one final hurdle remains. Our foe is powerful! Lu Bu leads the forces defending the gate. Who dares to go out to fight him!?"

"Wait," Hiro spoke softly so only the students arranged around him as if some private military unit could hear, "What?"

Well this was quite interesting. It seems That Hiro had gone and transported the whole class into the book itself. Shin found himslef clad in light, flexible, leather armour surrounded by his classmates who were in similarly different attire. Shin couldn't help but find the situation rather absurd.

He let this be known by laughing out loud. There he was, alongside an army preparing for an epic battle, giggling like a loon. "I must say sensei." He gasped out, after he managed to stop laughing. "You've certainly made literature much more interesting."

And it seems that they were expected to lay siege to the gate in front of them. And none other than the legendary Lu Bu was leading the opposing forces. This interested Shin. He wanted to test his skills against trained soldiers and legendary warriors. And since they were only characters from a story and not the real thing, he didn't have to worry about that pesky guilt of his.

He piped up, aiming his voice at Wang Kuang. "Sounds interesting." He grinned, eyes flashing dangerously. "If you'll let me. I shall pursue Lu Bu." He looked once at Hiro. "We're not in any real danger here are we sensei?" He made an attempt at the puppy dog eyes. "Even if we are. Can I please go test my skills against a legendary warrior?"

Jaret blinked as he found himself transported to the world of the book. He had shifted back to his demonic form, but he was not bare-chested this time. He had an ornate breastplate covering his chest.

This was certainly a new experience for the demon. He had never encountered magic like this before. It was interesting to see. For a moment Jaret wondered if this spell would work with others= forms of stories such as movies, comics or video games.

Not really sure what to do at the moment, Jaret remained silent. Content to wait for his teacher to tell the class what to do next.

Although he was starting to become much more interested in the idea of future classes if they were all going to be as interesting and immerse as this one.

Lilica's eyes would widen as Hiro began his spell. Was this character stupid?! Didn't he know that pouring your own magic into someone else's contracts was one of the most dangerous things any Storyteller, Fae or not, could do?! At this rate, they were going to-

*pop*

... Wind up in the story. Lilica would blink a few times at her surroundings, hesitance on her face. She, being a woman, was of course not dressed in soldier regalia. No, instead of looking like a perfectly respectable soldier, the Courtless Fae was dressed as a perfectly respectable concubine. Not that she objected to the outfit, mind. No, what she objected to was not being the one choosing her role. To someone like her, such a affront could not go unanswered! This novice who had gotten her into this mess would answer for this insult!

The Fae would walk right up Hiro, begin to raise her hand to slap him... And then promptly double over, gasping. Large red welts began to form across her face, and if the others were paying attention, they would notice that her hands seemed to have an ugly rash upon them. W-w-what?! the Fae thought to herself through the sudden pain clouding her thoughts. I shouldn't be feeling like this... Unless... Oh noooooooooo....

Unfortunately for Lilica, the most commonly used material for Han-era armor and weapons wasn't steel or bronze, or some other metal she could tolerate. No, the metal that was nearly everywhere around the Fae right now was the one material that she couldn't tolerate. "I-iron..." she would wheeze pathetically before tightening more in pain.

It was at this point that a sudden blue light would flash, likely surprising everyone in the area. And then, towering over every other soldier on the battlefield, was a seven and a half foot, one-eyed, leather armored humanoid toad. He was smoking a pipe, and seemed to be shoving his way through the other students from about the same place as Lilica's starting position. Then, seemingly unconcerned with everyone else, it would bend down, heave Lilica over its shoulder... And then jump away from Hiro and the others, and towards the city. During it's leap, it would utter a mighty bass call as it sailed through the air.

"DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!"

"Wha-?" Dawn spoke quietly in amazement as she found herself, along with the others inside the book. She wasn't sure if this was all in Hiro's plan or if there was a mess up on his part or the mess up on someone else's part. It was all extremely confusing at the very least, Dawn found herself in long robes that were surprisingly alright to wear. She was expecting them to be a lot less comfortable but apparently that wasn't the case.

She watched as the situation set itself in. It seemed like they were to be in the middle of the battle that Hiro was reading out. Dawn felt a pang of fear, she wasn't sure whether or not they could actually be harmed. "Tsukasa-sensi, what should we do?" Dawn quietly asked the teacher, it seemed like they were being a bit subtle about the whole situation for now at least. They were definetly in a bad position at the moment if they were capable of being harmed in the story.

Listening as the man looked for volunteers to fight Lu Bu, Dawn couldn't help but pity whoever would be sent to fight him. Lu Bu was a dangerous man, his strength was known far and wide and he had turned into legend at points. When one of her class mates volunteered her mouth opened in shock. It was the other person who had displayed knowledge of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, how could he willingly want to fight such a beast of a man. Dawn stood in silence waiting to follow whatever Hiro's instructions were, they were the best way to stand a chance of getting out of the situation alive.
