It should have been a familiar place. 'Should have' being the operative part.

She'd seen a few pictures in her youth, but to see it now was still different. It was nothing like what it had been when she'd come here, at a time that felt so long ago. Just more rubble amidst a sea of more rubble, once consumed in nuclear fire under a pitch black sky.

No, in this world, she saw the sky her parents had said was worth protecting, and the peaceful days gone by that were otherwise only a dim memory.

It should have been a familiar place.

But still, Sayaka couldn't bring herself to enter or approach.

Merely to stand some short distance away, and watch through the glass doors and walls as peacefully went about their business, and occassionally, were helped by the cheerful proprietor.

It should have been a familiar place.

Why should she hesitate or be afraid? She'd heard stories, seen videos and photos, and genuinely wished she could perhaps meet with that person one day. And yet she was afraid to see them. It wasn't the same kind of fear she was used to. The trepidation and uncertainty were different from the fear of one's life you felt in combat.

To her, a battle was a simple thing for which she had prodigious talent and the knowledge and experience to adjust to. To face death by laser blasts or missiles or bombardment magical or mundane were things that were common place in her life. This was not.

It should have been a familiar place.

Sighing, the girl leaned back against a tree, staring up at the clear blue summer sky, quietly cursing herself for her cowardice

It was just another day, really. Kouta had been largely recovering from another round of tests that needed to be performed due to his unstable body. He had been slowly trying to get back onto a normal schedule and interacting with people, now that he was less worried about going on a rampage and other such problems that were tied to the Arcle or his fractured psyche.

Which first meant getting back to working at his "main" job that wasn't being a Rider. Despite being the owner, he was always up in front and quite often looked like a Part-Timer. It was why he could easily weave in and out of the shop during busy hours...

And show up in front of Sayake with a plate with a slice of cake on it. He had seen her multiple times standing outside for quite some time, and figured "why the hell not, I'm in a good mood" and she did seem to be antsy about something.

"You lost? Or are you waiting for someone?"

"Hwa-"

How did she not notice?

Had he been that quick? That quiet?

From the start, this had not gone according to plan. What was happening now was somehow even less according to plan than she had started with. She hadn't intended on meeting him - or anyone else for that matter - here. Not yet at least.

How was such a thing so difficult?

It should have been a simple matter for someone who'd experienced countless battlefields in their lifetime, but courage was a fickle thing that took many forms in many situations. Fear of one's life was not the same as the trepidation she'd felt, though she'd felt as if she wanted to melt away at that moment. Being shot at by air combat mages was alot easier than this.

The cake was the final straw in that overheated mind. He was just as nice as she remembered. Just as cheerful. Just the same sort who seemed to be drawn to random kindness.

"Hwa-hwa hwa-" she shook her head hard as if to force her system to reboot and process the situation before here "Ah, well... that is..."

Her cheeks went flush from embarassment. Focus.

"W-well there's someone I really wanted to see again..." she said, looking down in embarrassment, unable to face Kouta or his cake "I-I just... well, it's that it's something I want to go well, b-but I don't think he remembers me and..."

Kouta did have the knack for appearing out of no where like this. There was still one person who couldn't pull it off with, but not for the lack of trying. Regardless, true to his cafe-owner persona, he simply nodded and listened though didn't seem to try and overtly press the flustered girl. He always had that effect people when he acted as an "urban legend" as some put it.

"Well the first step is to stop stuttering and relax."

He was making a light-hearted jab now that he got the gist of it. Ultimately though, his friendly smile and snack-offer remained, as he simply offered his two-cents to the situation at hand.

"Wanting meetings to go well is nice, but generally you shouldn't plan them out else you'll end up tripping over everything...of course, I guess mishaps would make things more memorable."

Of course, his advice was...questionable at best.

"W-Well... I suppose so..." she conceded. It certainly already did, though not in the way he might have expected

To Sayaka, this was probably the most flustered she had ever been. There had been awkward times with others, and of course times when she was uncertain what to say, but none of those times involved quite the embarrassment or surprise she was feeling at the moment.

What made it worse was she wasn't even sure why she was embarrassed. Being surprised was a common thing.

Sometimes, it really was easier just letting guns do the talking. This was however, a time and place where they would be completely inappropriate and even worse than pointless. Thus, all she had to field was a limited arsenal of words, and gut feeling to get her through the awkward moment.

"But, that person is really important to me, even if he doesn't realise it, so I was hoping to plan at least something to give him to remember at first... ah..." she gave off a nervous laugh "Though I also hoped noone would notice me until I was ready you see..."

"When you keep standing in the same spot fidgeting, it's kind of hard not to notice someone here."

For some reason, Kouta was having fun teasing the poor girl. It was just...second nature he felt when dealing with people who normally had no weaknesses like this. That, and it also broke the monotony of the day. He needed some human interaction that wasn't a doctor telling him that his body may give up on him some day.

"If it helps, I won't be able to forget there was an awkward, stuttering person pacing outside my shop?"

Yep. Totally Kouta.

"W-well..." she looked down, and away, arms held behind her back as she tried not to look too flustered "...Yes."

Though it wasn't quite what she expected, in retrospect, she honestly didn't know what she really expected. This sort of result was fine too, she thought, thinking warmly about it. Even if it wasn't what she planned, it was still a nice feeling.

It was probably the happiest she'd felt in awhile. Certainly she hadn't felt like this since her final operation.

But there was still one more matter...

"Uhm... about that cake..."

"I could give you this slice, but since we took a while here, it's not really warm anymore."

Well, not that it couldn't be enjoyed either way but Kouta did have something in mind. "Since you're waiting for someone...I could give you something more suited to your tastes inside, and maybe one for your friend?" it was a simple enough offer, really. Plus, since she was outside the shop, it wouldn't be hard to look for the person she was waiting for when the time came.

Besides, standing out here was getting kind of awkward...
