Ivo Rock breathed in and out as he ran along the track. He had already ran at least two laps so far, but unfortunately for him, he needed to run a certain amount each day to keep up on his exercise. As much as he wasn't really interested, and although it wasn't like he would grow fat or anything, being out of shape was not something he needed to be in a place like Hyakuji.

He had his Ipod in his left pocket and a pair of earphones in his ears, listening to his favorite music tracks as he ran, and in his right pocket was a small flask that held his water. Unfortunately, he couldn't really use his goggles at the same time as he ran. Doing a task like running was actually quite hard to do at the same time as browsing the Internet without using any hands on a pair of next-gen goggles.

Perhaps I should find a way to program one part of my brain to move my muscles automatically when I have to run track. That way, I can task other parts of my brain towards browsing the Internet. Maybe a text file or something I can just drop in? Ivo pondered to himself as he ran.

"Most likely not that easy. I'll probably have to create a whole new program myself." He concluded aloud to no one in particular. "Ah, well. At least it'll be fun, unlike this." He said with a sour face. He was halfway around the track now at this point.

Dirtman absolutely didn't need to exercise to keep himself in shape. In fact that may have been a negative for him. Never the less he was methodically circling the track. Normally he would have picked a direction and went. That was how he generally traveled the city. Still, other students didn't do things like that.

He decided to do this today though. It was what everyone else seemed to do when they decided to go walk. He could do the same. It wasn't a real problem. And so a man made entirely of dirt went past Ivo without a second thought. Like a boulder rolling around a mountain he picked up speed as he went.

Ivo kept running, then he noticed something odd. What seemed to be a man..covered in dirt? no, not covered in dirt. Made of dirt, just running down the track. Was this person..or thing, staff or student? it had the body of an adult human but he couldn't be sure unless he found out.

"Heeey! wait a minute!" Ivo paused his Ipod with his mind, using his abilities to pause it without actually touching it. With his curiosity peaked, he then picked up speed. "Hey, uh..buddy. Can we stop and talk for a second? I have a few questions to ask you." Ivo asked, running alongside the Dirtman. He had so many questions to ask.

He'd seen pretty amazing things at Hyakuji so far. Robot dogs, an Android that he got to hang out with. Giant robots. But this? a man made of dirt, or some dirt shaped like a man running down the track with him was just..odd. He needed to know how his, or it's body worked. It was too amazing to pass off as just "one of those things" at Hyakuji.

Dirtman nodded and started to slow down. He couldn't stop immediately. It took him a bit to get back to a stop, though a hundred yards from where he had nodded he came to a complete stop. "Hello." The monotone voice left his lips as it always did. Well, that was a bit of a lie. It had slipped his mind to actually move his lips on this occasion. The sound did come from him mouth though.

Strangely it didn't occur to him that he might be the subject of the conversation, but that was more or less irrelevant. If this guy wanted to talk then he didn't mind. He was somewhat curious what it was about though.

Ivo stopped running also. He caught his breath, then looked up at him. Yeah, hi..there." Ivo slowly rose an eyebrow. "Alright, then. So, I was just wondering what exactly what you were. But..huh." Ivo circled the Dirtman, getting a good look at him, then stopped right in front of him. "I've seen some stuff at Hyakuji, but this is incredible. You are sentient dirt, I cannot believe how amazing this is right now." Ivo said in sheer amazement.

"So, what is like being dirt, exactly? hold on, let me just get out my smartphone first." Ivo said, pulling out his smart phone. The device's screen automatically flickered on, then it went to the Notes application, almost by itself.

"Okay, right. So you're dirt. What was it like, being dirt before you came fully aware of yourself? tell me all about your evolution into a full sentient being, and I'll just have it written down in my Notes here for later." Ivo said, looking up at the Dirtman. He had two full feet on him, It was almost intimidating, scary even, looking into the face of a man made of Dirt.

Dirtman thought. His thoughts took a bit to gather. He didn't answer immediately. Perhaps he seemed offended, but that wasn't at all the case. Still Dirtman didn't answer as soon as he probably should. He didn't even offer any sort of acknowledgement.

"There were many things I was before I attained my individuality." All of them were dirt of course, but he had been farmland, the ground of a forest, thrown aside by machinery, pierced by shovels. He had done many things in the past. Still there was a very exciting bit so he shared that. "Once there was a bulldozer. It pressed us tight together, but we were always together so it wasn't too much of a change. It crushed us down over and over. It was hot and we became stiff under the pressure." That was his best story so he went with it.

He thought, "One day I got up, left the forest and followed some people here." The truth was Dirtman had no idea how that had happened. "It was a few weeks before any teacher asked who I was." Dirtman looked at Ivo, wondering what else he wanted to know.

Ivo silently listened to the Dirtman, waiting politely to take any notes before he was finished speaking. After he looked at Ivo expectantly, he spoke up.

"Mm, interesting. Very interesting how your physiology just changed like that over time. You must be some pretty special dirt there, guy." Ivo said, half-jokingly and half-serious.

"So would you say, in your opinion that becoming sentient is far more interesting than just being regular, run-of-the-mill dirt?" Ivo asked, having his smartphone type out things Ivo noted through his manipulation of electronics.

"Not that there's fundamentally anything wrong with being dirt, it's a sentient being's choice, however..just now that you have the opportunity, I wanna know how you feel about the human race, and life in general." Ivo explained.

"It is more exciting." Dirtman admitted. He had enjoyed his life since he became a singular thing. "Ah, I decided that people are more valuable than animals and monsters." That had been a serious moral dilemma for him so he thought he would mention it. Most humans, he assumed didn't need to decide that. They probably all just felt that was without thinking about it.

"I'll..." He paused, looking for the right words "protect people, even if I need to end something else." He still spoke of death as ending. It wasn't some sort of dramatic word, but life and death were still foreign concepts to him. Things started and ended and that was how he viewed the living things around him.

"That's very noble of you." Ivo said. He was quite astonished at the level of empathy this being had, only coming into existence not very long ago but probably longer then Ivo had been at school. He decided that this was enough, and finished writing his notes, putting away his phone.

"I think I have everything I need to know, sir. It's been quite an experience talking to you." Ivo said with a smile. "By the way, I don't think I ever told you my name, did I?" Ivo said with a chuckle.

"Sorry about that, it's Ivo. Ivo Rock VII. Seventh male in my family to be given that exact name. And I admire your empathy. I would like to say, you are just as human as anyone else, you've evolved far beyond being a pile of dirt. Thanks for letting me talk to you." he held out his hand, intending to shake.

Dirtman's firm stone-like hand grasped Ivo's. "You can call me Dirtman. We will speak again Ivo." That was how he ended their conversation. It was how he'd seen other people end conversations so this was a good opportunity to try it out. He had come a long way from directly repeating phrases back to people. He used other peoples' phrases nowadays.

He wasn't entirely sure Ivo was right about his Empathy. It was something he made a conscious decision to maintain so that didn't quite seem like the right word for it.

"We certainly will, Dirtman." Ivo smiled. And with that, he started back up his jogging. That was certainly an interesting conversation, wasn't it? it had put him in a good mood, good enough to get him to want to jog again.

Ivo wondered what types of other undiscovered sentient things were out there, just waiting to be discovered. He was sure, Hyakuji would be joined by many, many more wonderful things for him to interact with.

He smiled, picking up his pace a bit. Exercising wasn't all that bad after all.
