There are a lot of good ways to meet new people. Chatting up your classmates is always a safe go-to, and getting involved in some extra-curriculars is an easy way to invest in new friendships. Falling on top of someone, though? Not the best idea... Ralius stepped out into the second floor hallway, finished with his day's classes. He hadn't been at Hyakuji long and still felt a bit awkward adjusting to life in a new school -- not to mention life on a planet as opposed to a ship -- but he was feeling pretty optimistic today and felt like things were going, more or less, pretty well. And now that he was free from the burden of classes, he could continue the process of learning the surrounding area. A trip to the mall maybe, or exploring the suburbs, or even just wandering the campus and checking out the impressive school facilities. All of these options played through his head as he headed for the stairway. He could see the front doors, and he casually hopped up onto the railing of the stairway and pushed off, ready to glide swiftly down toward the doorway and make a gentle landing on the floor below. At least, that's what he would have done back home in space, where the gravity-less interior of a starship made it easy to move in any direction. In yet another of his embarrassing "you're on a planet now, genius" moments, Ralius pushed off the stair rail toward the door, and proceeded to plummet down to the first floor, landing rather ungracefully on some unfortunate passing student. ... did this ever get easy? |

"Mrh... what happened?" A girl with short copper-colored hair drawled in a deadpan voice as she lay face-down underneath Ralius, incongruously-dressed in the uniform of a different school. A perennial outsider, Misora has always felt like she was a normal girl with abnormal powers surrounded by extraordinary individuals. "You just saved a boy's life, Misora-chan," Jen replied plainly, the purple-haired girl standing over both the redheaded teen and the half-zombie underneath him. "Hey, are you alright? You able to stand?" the purple-haired girl asked as she reached out a hand to try and help the boy onto his feet, assuming he had difficulties getting up under his own power. "Nothing broken I hope?" Jen asked as she waited for the boy's response, whether he would accept or decline her help, while in the meantime giving him a cursory glance to see if he'd sustained any injuries in the fall. |

Oh great, Ralius, now you've gone and done it... Not only did you manage to look like an idiot -again-, but now you went and fell on top of some poor... GIRL?! Oh God... Well, this couldn't have possibly gone worse, could it? He'd gone flying down into the middle of the first floor, and now humiliated himself in one of not one -- but apparently two-- girls. He looked down at the brown-haired girl laying face-down on the tile, eyes falling shut as he sighed. Then, before long, another girl -- a cuter, purple-haired girl -- was offering him a hand to get up. He took it and pulled himself to his feet, barely even pulling the girl enough to upset her balance, being a bit on the frail side from so many years spent in a zero-gravity environment. "I'm ah, really sorry about this..." he said sheepishly with a nervous chuckle. He reached a hand down to Misora, offering her his help just as Jen had offered hers to him. "You see, I grew up on a starship so, I'm kind of used to zero-gravity and, well... As you can see, my brain tends to forget about that whole... Gravity thing. Doesn't feel like I hurt anything too badly though!" Falling off the stairs? Check. Stammering like an embarrassed idiot in front of two girls? Check. Could this get any worse? Probably, but he didn't want to test that theory. "This is a terrible way to be introduced to someone, but I'm Ralius Lorraine, a first-year transfer student. Nice to meet you.. Given the circumstances, at least." |

"No harm done... and no offense taken..." Misora replied in her monotone, acknowledging the boy with an appreciative smile as she accepted his offer to help her back onto her feet just as Jen had earlier helped him up. "And thank you..." the half-zombie remarked as she bowed to show her gratitude, before brushing at her skirt and blazer and adjusting her disheveled outfit. "Grew up on a starship? Wow, I guess that means you're either from the distant future, or from an advanced extraterrestrial civilization," Jen remarked as the boy confessed how his fall was neither an accident nor a suicide attempt, but rather just a lapse of memory thinking things on Earth worked the same way on board a starship. "Though that's a little strange to think about it... because if you're from a civilization that's advanced enough to build spacecraft capable of crossing interstellar distances, shouldn't such vessels have the means to generate simulated gravity or something?" the purple-haired girl wondered. "Nice to meet you, Ralius-san, even if the fall wasn't that nice," Jen replied to the redhead's greeting. "Name's Jennifer Chase, third year student. My friends call me Jen," the purple-haired girl continued, giving Ralius a smile and a nod, before gesturing towards her shorter, copper-haired counterpart, eliciting a confused look from the other girl. "Oh... right... introductions..." the half-zombie nodded before bowing again. "I am Fujioka Misora... second-year transfer student... well-met... Ralius-san..." Misora droned as she straightened up from her bow, pausing for a few seconds before remembering to work her facial muscles and give a smile. |

Ralius wasn't entirely sure what to make of Misora's response to his apology. Based on her words and actions, it seemed all was well, but there was something about her deadpan delivery that left him wondering if she was secretly fuming at him on the inside. It made him feel a little uneasy, but he'd already done enough to make this situation awkward already and he didn't need to add any more fuel to that fire. He brushed off his own clothing, seeing that he wasn't terribly banged up, and then turned to Jen as she started addressing him again after making sure his uniform was back in order. "Yeah, well..." he stammered at first, before he realized that in a school like this one, being from a space fleet was probably pretty darn normal next to some of his classmates. "We can produce artificial gravity actually, but it generally takes a lot of power and equipment to make it work. So to keep things simple, we only actually maintained gravity on space stations... Traveling starships did without it to keep down on size and energy costs. So I'm a little used to just sort of gliding around wherever I needed to go. I'd like to say this was the first time I've done something like this, but that would be a lie..." Unlike Misora's eerie, emotionless voice, Jen's friendly demeanor put him at ease, and has she went about her own introduction Ralius became visibly more relaxed in their conversation. They were both older than him, it seemed -- so he'd successfully worked himself into the "humorously awkward first-year" stereotype. Chalk up another win for the day. "Jen, and Misora," he echoed the girls' introduction and offered his own bow, "This isn't exactly how I planned to make friends, but I'm glad to meet you both. As I'm sure you can imagine, I'm adjusting to my new surroundings in more ways than one. Edited by Ralius Lorraine, Jul 9 2014, 03:32 PM.

"That makes sense, although I take it that means your starships are probably capable of crossing interstellar distances in the same amount of time ocean liners on Earth can cross continental distances, ne?" Jen wondered as Ralius explained how only space stations from his civilization produced artificial gravity - while possible for starships as well, they were purposefully excluded to cut down on size and energy requirements. "Because unless your species has evolved to live in microgravity conditions, living for long-term in a zero-G environment tends to have adverse effects on the muscles of creatures that evolved under Earth gravity... oh, sorry, I get a little carried away at times," the purple-haired girl chuckled. "So... Ralius-san is an alien...?" Misora asked, putting on a quizzical expression at the end of her question, in what felt like an offline reenactment of an IM conversation by putting an emoticon at the end of a string of text. "To us anyway, it's really a matter of perspective," Jen chimed in. "Since from his perspective, we're the aliens," the purple-haired girl continued, before putting an arm around Misora's shoulder. "And oh, don't worry too much about Misora-chan over here, she may sound strange but she's a really nice and gentle girl! Don't let the expressionless façade fool you; it's just that zombies aren't exactly the best at showing emotion." "Only half-zombie... Jen-chan..." Misora added, "I theorized that reanimated human cadavers lacked fine control over their motor functions... retaining only their most basic ones such as walking and crawling... so it's like I have to learn something that normal humans take for granted... it feels like a bird learning how to fly or something..." the half-zombie nodded slowly, before pumping a fist somewhat lazily as a bodily gesture to demonstrate her determination. "You'll get used to it, Ralius-san, just like how Misora-chan is learning how to get adjusted to her human side," Jen remarked in a cheery tone as she took her arm off Misora's shoulder to give the half-zombie an encouraging pat on the back. "So, seeing how classes are done for the day... got any plans? Or are you just thinking of heading back to the dorms to chill?" the purple-haired girl asked, clearly not minding setting aside some time to get to know this new acquaintance better. |

Ralius was actually taken aback by Jen's sudden tangent -- pointing out zero-g's effects on the body and using that to speculate about the nature of the Arcelians' starships was pretty impressive, especially coming from a high school-aged girl he'd just met. Obviously Jen knew a thing or two about science, and he actually smirked a little as she threw out her theory. "Good observations," he said grinning, "Arcelian starships do move fairly quickly, and our fleet's purpose was to conduct surveys and reconnaissance of foreign planets, so we did get to spend some at least some time in planetary environments.. But you're right, it does take a toll on the muscles, which I guess is why I'm not all that strong, physically. I might need to spend some time in the gym.." He trailed off at that thought, not wanting to be too self-depreciating. He barely took notice of Misora calling him an alien, beings that was technically correct and all, but.. the brown-haired girl was a what?? Ralius' eyes widened noticeably as Jen introduced Misora as a zombie -- or a half-zombie, as she corrected her -- and he tried to calm his facial expression quickly so as not to seem rude. "A half-zombie, you say? I can't say I've ever heard of a thing like that..." What else could he say? The wrong observation would probably come off as an insult... But then again, given Misora's expressionless demeanor, she might not even care. This school was certainly going to be a bizarre learning experience. "Well ah, good luck with that, Misora... I suppose we both have a lot to learn." He then turned back to Jen. "I didn't really have anything specific planned," he continued, "I've just been sort of winging things after classes, kind of wandering around and ending up places and trying to familiarize myself with the area. Of course, if you have a suggestion, I'd be happy to go for it!" |

"It's complicated... that's all I have to say..." Misora droned in response to Ralius showing fascination over the girl's semi-undead nature, the copper-haired girl's eyes averting the gaze of the redheaded boy as she shuffled backwards a little with an uneasy gait. "It's alright, Misora-chan tends to get a little touchy talking about her background around strangers or fresh acquaintances," Jen added as she gave the other girl a reassuring pat on the back. "And thanks, Hyakuji's got its fair share of extraterrestrial residents, so you're not alone really. Met quite a few of them, though I could only wish I got a chance to hitch a ride on one of them starships!" the purple-haired girl commented in a wistful tone of voice as she spaced out for a short moment, a faraway look in her eyes. "Anyway, you look like you could use a guided tour of the campus... or if you're looking to do some working out you could always try to look for me at gym or dojo during weekday evenings if you feel like you need to keep your martial arts skills sharp, or if you just plain want to chat with someone," Jen remarked after snapping back to reality. "But for now, Misora-chan and I have some quiet reading to do over at the library, hope to see you again, Ralius-san!" the purple-haired girl smiled as she waved goodbye to the boy, with Misora giving a quiet, polite bow before turning around to join Jen, as the girls proceeded with their plans to head to the library. |
