Hugh Carter sat on-top of a large rooftop somewhere in Downtown Hyakuji. He had just committed a jewelry store robbery hours earlier in a different part of Downtown, and as he left the store and went back to school to drop his haul off, something had popped into his head: why was he still alive? really, what was his reason to continue existing? he had tried to rationalize it in the beginning. Treasure, that was an easy one, even if he had never knew it a year ago, it was going to be his first and central reason to continue living on. There was no denying it, stealing actually made him happy. It was one of his pride and joys, to get away with a bunch of jewelry or priceless artifacts and have the cops come around minutes later, with him already gone. It was a good feeling, a feeling that made him feel like he had power. That power was his third reason for living, the DiEnd Driver, a Kamen Rider Gear. Given to him by his father, he was given the simple reason to "use it to survive" and then, after a send-off, his entire life, finally after many years..came crashing down. Literally, in a spaceship he came crashing down to a parallel Earth. He had used it to survive, and with it survive he did. But now he had place to live, and food. So what exactly did he need the DiEnd Driver for, other then the occasional close getaway? his father had used it to protect him and himself, so that they could etch out an existence that was livable, viable. And he was using it for petty thievery. When you matched them up, his reason to live was far less important than the life his dad had been trying to give them both. And then, in no real chronological order was his second reason to live: Adventure. What adventure? he'd been stranded on a fucking parallel Earth for over a year, living a fake life with no friends or anything from his old life that could support him, nothing. He couldn't be a hero, either. A Kamen Rider, most of them, were "Heroes of Justice" but not him. He'd given the sliver of a chance that he ever had to do that, the moment he started leaving his calling card at the crime scene "Phantom Thief DiEnd" so if he ever had to transform in front of a bunch of people, the police could just cross-reference the name with his calling card and..boom. An instant reveal of his location. That was why he had never participated in the large battles Hyakuji always had. If BOARD had ever, ever found out about Diend's existence as a Kamen Rider and a thief, he'd be in an even worse world of pain and endless headaches. Hugh Carter was a ghost. He wasn't a hero, he wasn't a thief, he wasn't anyone's friend, he wasn't a real Kamen Rider, he wasn't even something that even existed in this world, at least to his knowledge. So, what did you do in this type of situation? what did a ghost, a being without any real reason to keep going...do to keep on going? he had no permanent attachments, he knew no one. If he just..ended, no one would care. There was always those stupid suicide hotline mottos "we do care, people care about you". No, no one did. Those people didn't give a damn about him or his life, they didn't know him. They were just trained, paid cold hard cash money. Money made the world go round, and people would do anything for a piece of paper that had any value to it. Even listen to his problems. While seriously considering the prospect of a simple end, he couldn't even do it. He tossed the idea aside without a thought more. He took out his phone, checking the time on a whim. It was 9:18 PM, as if it really mattered. He shut his phone, putting it back into the messenger bag on his back. He watched the streets below, many people were out tonight in this part of town. Entering houses, stores, talking with each other, driving by or whatever. All of them were people with a real life, unlike him, who was just a ghost, a mere non-existant. But in a few hours, whether or not he had an existence, he needed to get some sleep and go to High School, where his facade would keep up for another day. But at the moment without much to do, and too much in a bad mood to do anything else with his time, he just sat there brooding and watching people go about their night. |

Beware The Penguin Emperor
|
It had been a while since he had strolled around the bustling city at night for a reason other than introspection. Kaizo had managed to accept his past faults as part of who he was, and largely overcame what had caused him to act in such a manner. He knew that he had to understand the consequences of what he had done, but he also found that he had been lucky enough to be in a space of no consequence, he had been given a lesson, a lesson that if he allowed himself to be weak, many people could die. Alleviation filled him, the streets were, after all, a place to enjoy, not a random piece of terrain to be used to wallow in self pity. Looking around, he noticed details that he had missed before, places and buildings, the true identity of the city in which he lived when he was actually paying attention to his surroundings, rather than limiting himself to his own mind, and enclosing a space within it. Skyscrapers and small shops alike seemed to smile at the sight of him, at the sight of the people that had built them. Each of them housed a story of its own, as well as the stories of hundreds, perhaps thousands of people that had been affected by their existence. For a second, he pondered what kind of butterfly effect a single place could have, perhaps the difference between it existing and not doing so could mark the difference between someone's grandson being rich beyond comprehension, and completely poor. Yet as he looked around, he ended up staring at a person that stood out from the crowd. The person he wound up staring at was someone who had been looking down on the whole of Hyakuji, as if he was a foreign existence, not only to the city, but to the crowd as a whole. A being that could not comprehend the rest try as he might. Finding himself empathizing with the person, thinking back to how similar he had felt before, Kaizo went into an alleyway besides the building where said person, a boy his age, sat. After reaching the place, remaining hidden from the sight of the general public, he created 20 pixels, on top of which he climbed. Afterwards he created 20 more, forming another step, he vanished the previous twenty, and made another twenty, stepping up a tad more. The process had been quick, he had ended up recahing the top of the building without much ado, and sure enough, he found the person he was looking for sitting there. "It's a nice view from here isn't it?" He spoke while standing on top of a pixel, without having made a single step to the top of the rooftop. |

Hugh simply turned his head. At first, he was a bit off-put by what he saw. A boy, about his age..flying? no, not flying, idiot. Standing on a platform of some sort. It was probably a good bet that he went to Hyakuji. He considered his question for a moment. If it ever had a name of one of the most common things to happen, he'd call it "rooftop banter". Chuckling a bit to himself at the idea of people just commonly meeting up after work on a rooftop, his mood had been lifted a bit. "Yeah, I guess it is a pretty good view. It kind of gives you a different perspective on the world, y'know? honestly, I often find myself just jumping from rooftops and I know that sounds kinda weird, but I don't really stop much to take in the sights. It feels kinda nice. Slow down every once in awhile. Just..take everything in. Reflect on life." Hugh said. A brief moment, he said nothing, just watching people from below. "...You can sit next to me, if you want. I'm not like, possessed by a demon, or like..have some secret evil split personality that comes out at random. I'm pretty normal, honestly. Hugh chuckled a bit once again. "But uh, I do attend Hyakuji High. I assume you do as well because..well, y'know." Hugh said, offering a seat next to him. He wondered about the boy. What were his thoughts on the world? what hardships had he gone through? he hadn't really thought about other people in such a way very often, but it had occurred to him that this boy stopped whatever he was doing to come and comment on the view with him. It wasn't really something you just..did. You had to have been a little bit extraordinary to pause and consider another individual, and then go out of your way to go talk to them in the middle of the night on a rooftop. Ironically he had told the boy that he was pretty normal, but that was for his own well-being more than anything. He hadn't considered himself a "normal" person in a long, long time. |

It did not take long for the person sitting in front of him to make note of the bluenette's appearance, and the fact that Kaizo was speaking at him. Listening to the explanations of jumping from rooftop to rooftop, of not sitting down to actually observe what stood nearby, the gamer reminded himself of the fact that he had been doing just the same thing, perhaps it had been good luck that they had both decided to take it calmly for a day, on the same day. Closing the space between them until they were around a meter and a half apart, he managed to hear the last part about the fellow student being normal. "No one at Hyakuji is normal" Kaizo took a seat besides the other boy at the rooftop. "If you are not strange by now, you'll soon be" It was an odd sensation, to know that once he had protected his identity as a normal human as if his life depended on it, and that by then, he had learned to accept that he was an oddity, something that could be repeated, but was uncommon nonetheless. Knowing that, being aware that describing him as a full human was simply not accurate felt liberating in a sense, it allowed him to feel at home in a city whose very foundations were based on the existence of people such as him. In a way, they were all cogs in a machine, and sometimes, a single cog would push the machine to the limit, it only needed the right push. "But then again, wouldn't someone perfectly normal be more of an oddity around here?" Following on the sense of kinship that he had felt earlier, he figured that it would be a good idea to let the other know that he was not alone. His own guilt, as well as the sense that accompanied it, had only vanished once he faced a true issue alongside the people he cared about. The people he had been lucky enough to call friends. |

"....Of course I'm not normal. Not by choice, mind you. It was just a matter of the circumstances that brought me to Hyakuji. Sometimes, you don't really get to pick and choose how your life plays out." Hugh admitted. "Name's Hugh Carter, I'm an American." Hugh explained. "Of course, it's not just as simple as admitting you're odd to any old person. Especially when some people have a good reason to keep why they are odd or out-of-the-ordinary to themselves." Hugh said. "I have secrets. Things that I know if I tell anyone important, I won't be able to live any type of life. You don't choose how things play out, not always. Some factors are random. Take it as playing cards, I guess. I just play the hand I'm dealt, but in the end I dig myself into a hole." Hugh's eyes followed the passerby's below. "I feel like I'm at the end of my road here. I'm tired and just ready to give up on this whole thing. It's not worth it at this point." Hugh said with a very weary look on his face. "And, even though I'm not lucky enough to have anyone..there was this girl I met, awhile ago. I tried to romance her, but in the end I just ended up telling her my entire back story. I just ended up making myself feel better for just..telling someone. She told me she wouldn't tell..I needed to get it off my chest, y'know? I..even though I'm alone, I needed to tell someone. I hate this feeling of isolation, like I'm just in a place where I don't belong, no matter how I look at it. I put on a smug and cocky facade, and I talk big..but it isn't who I am!! I just lie to myself and others, because if I don't lie, it's the end for me..that's why..I'm just a ghost." Hugh had no idea why he was pouring his heart out to this person all of a sudden, a sudden mood whiplash perhaps. Even though he hadn't told him his back story, there was no reason to tell him his true feelings. Then, he realized. He didn't really care anymore about hiding it. Just for this one night, he didn't care. "I'll tell you. You came to me, saw me up here. You cared enough to come talk to me. Just for this one night, one more time I'll tell someone. I'll tell you my whole back story, who I am and what I'm about. But only if you feel up to it, friend. Just for this one night, when I really don't care anymore, I'll tell you all of my secrets, regardless of who you are. You don't look like a psychiatrist, but..I really, really need someone to just lend an ear." |

"Yeah, it seems like sometimes what we have consumes who we are, doesn't it?" Chances were high that their circumstances were completely different, perhaps it would be hard to trace a single similarity between them if they were to make a line that followed them since their birth up until the moment that they found each other on the rooftop. BUt at the very least, Kaizo could say that he understood the basic emotions that encompassed their anger at the world, or the attempts to fit in, or the feeling of not being able to turn back. Regardless of their situations, at the core they were capable of the same feelings, and in the end, it was impossible to tally up a problem to another, they could just create empathy by relating the good times and bad times they had had with one another. The bluenette chuckled, it hadn't been long since he had needed to recover from his own weakness, and it was already time for him to help someone else move forward, even if it was just a bit, just a few millimetres. "Go ahead, if you need it I am here to listen." Intending to pay the proper attention to the person that was confiding in him without a second thought he turned to face the other boy, motioning for him to start telling his story. Perhaps speaking would be the way to find how to proceed. |

"It...started a long time ago. The truth is, the reason I feel so out of place is..because I wasn't born here. Hugh Carter, does not exist on this Earth. Like I said, I'm an American. But I didn't grow up watching the same cartoons, or buying the same trading cards, or getting into the same trends as Americans here. The truth is, it started long ago..on a parallel Earth. It's where I was born and raised." Hugh went silent for a moment, to give Kaizo time to let such a revelation sink in. Then, he continued speaking. "My Earth is similar to yours, as are probably many parallel worlds, but it's obviously different. We have one key thing in common, however. Kamen Riders exist in our world too. I don't know if you're familiar with them, but they are basically masked heroes who use Transformation Belts or other things to transform. The Kamen Riders, protected us from..many things, things that the police or our soldiers couldn't match up to. Some fought primarily in Japan, others fought evil all around the world." Hugh explained. "Each Rider had some sort of secret foundation, society or foundation gunning for them. But there was one that rose up above them all. Shocker, a terrorist organization who was mainly involved with Kamen Rider Ichigo and Nigo and some of the older Riders, got together all of the evil groups, and formed Dai-Shocker. They launched a full scale invasion against Earth, and since the dimensions were open or something, after they conquered Earth they were going to try for the Multiverse next. We fought a long hard battle, for many years. But we ultimately failed, even with the many Riders they were too much for us. We lost, we had great numbers but so did they, no matter we we threw at them, they had something horrifying to send right back at us. My..mother died during one of the attacks." Hugh said with a sad look on his face, going silent for a few moments. "...They had mostly taken over. Some Riders died, some still lived on. There was your resistances, the hell-bent hold-outs who wouldn't give up. On our side of things, we were allowed to live under there oppressive rule. That's when Dai-Shocker developed..here, I'll just show it to you." Hugh took his messenger bag off his back, then took out two things. ![]() "It's called the DiEnd Driver. It was a mass produced Anti-Rider Gear developed to weed out the Riders. It's powerful, believe me I saw it used first-hand often." ![]() "By inserting this particular Kamen Ride card into the card slot, and pulling the trigger, usually holding it towards the sky or using the opportunity to get an extra shot off at an enemy, it transforms the user into Kamen Rider DiEnd, who is on the card right there." "Any questions before I go on?" Hugh asked. |

I apologize for the delay, and honestly have no excuses to give that explain it. ---- Kaizo pictured the scene that had started Hugh's sorrows. Man facing against man, and rider against rider, with one side having an unequivocal advantage due to being created specifically to face the other. He tapped his fingers on his knees, letting the intensity of the scenario sink in. He had been through a few end of the world scenarios himself, Hyakuji was the ideal place for that. What differentiated him from the other boy was the fact that in his case they hadn't actually gone through, and they had remained as simple "what ifs?| for things that could have happened, but in the end did not. "None so far" Figuring that the fact that the other boy was a Diend rider was meant as some form of a countermeasure against proper Diend riders, he did not ask anything regarding the family situation, understanding that it could have been a touchy subject. |

"...It isn't mine though, it's my dad's. Like I said, we were allowed to live under there rule. After mom, well..I was the only thing he had. So he joined up, willingly. Not many people were brave enough or had the heart to do such a thing, but my dad did it for me. The only thing he had in the world. Our life, as a result got a bit more..sanitary and manageable. And Luckily, Dad barely saw any action. He took potshots, but no one got seriously injured in the occasional skirmish. Whatever happened, he said no one got hurt. I don't think the poor man would have it in him, honestly. Not seriously, that's why he did the potshots. "Missed on purpose," he would say." Hugh explained. "He would..come home, at random. Give this..same..weak..and weary..smile..like everything was okay..every night..and just..crash out on the couch.." Hugh's voice got shaky, and he choked up a bit. He settled down a bit, then continued. "Not sure if I was happy..maybe when I got to see that smile, no matter how put on it was..I..was at least glad to see him. My dad..was so strong for me, I don't think I would be who I am without his..spirit, his fire. He was merciful to people, civilians. To the resistance, holding back to give them time to escape, all while still doing his job, and taking care of me. He was a true hero. Something I can't possibly be. All I can do is honor his memory, and never let anyone else get there hands on this thing. Never." Hugh said. "One day, other Earth's appeared in the sky. The gateway to other worlds, to freedom was open. A beautiful sight to behold. So, while Dai-Shocker was still busy weeding out the prevalent resistances, he formulated a plan. He got a ahold of one of there small, transport ships. He had used one once or twice before, they were small and could only hold a single person. He gave me the Driver and his cards. I only had the clothes on my back, and a single family photo. he set the ship on auto-pilot towards a random planet. And off I went. I don't know what happened to Dad, but he was a true hero. 110% a true hero." Hugh said proudly. "Miraculously, I made it all the way, out of my universe and into yours and onto this Earth. Despite all the odds, too. I crashed landed five miles outside the city. Covered it up nicely, did the whole five mile walk. I stole to live at first, that's how it started, really. Wasn't proud of it, but I found out about Hyakuji as a result. However, I made it a rule never to steal from other people. Everything I stole was from stores, snatched cleverly. Built up a knack for it. I got around a bit, and was able to..worm my way into Hyakuji High. I tried to remake myself, so I gave myself three reasons to live. Treasure, Adventure, and Power. Thought about it earlier, I was only able to truly fulfill the one. Not gonna go into details, but let's say just I'm "Phantom Thief DiEnd" now. Watch some local cable, maybe you'll catch the name. That's about it. I've been here for a year now."" Hugh said. "Can't help in the world-ending fights, because It'd blow my cover. If I ever transformed, It'd be a nightmare. BOARD is not a happy and nice Rider Organization, trust me on this. They would not accept me, especially after some of my recent choices. I may regret some life choices and feel alone, but whatever move I make would screw me over. But yet..I needed to vent, needed someone, to listen to me. But..you can't tell anyone, not anyone. Understand? no matter what I said, anything could just..destroy what's left of my life." Hugh said, making it clear what would happen if Kaizo leaked out anything. He then let out a heavy sigh, putting away the Diend Driver and Transformation Card before putting his face in his hands. |

"Choices don't close our lives, no matter how terrible they may be. They just make the road ahead that much harder." For once, he was actually speaking from experience. The moment when he was ab le to start contributing to the world, the moment when he became strong, only came after he decided to overcome his weakness and guilt. He knew that he couldn't have saved the lives of Kazuki and Matt from the monstrous attack had he just given up right there, and he was happy to have contributed something, however small. "If you can't help publicly, don't. Vigilante types that constantly sidestep the law are not uncommon here. Besides, there's more than one way to atone for what one does. He looked at Hugh, the at the skies above, thinking deeply about how to best word what he could say, what he should say, to help out the person in need. "Just like you, like us, there's a ton of people out there that need to find a way to keep going. Whether it is to atone, or to overcome a tragedy. And in the end, the way I see it, our gifts are no more than that, presents given to act as tools for any purpose we need them to. If I may ask, do you intend to go to university here?" |

Hugh silently listened to Kaizo's words. Then, when he asked him a question he spoke up. "University? aw, hell..I dunno man. I'm already on my own. If my dad was here, at least I'd be able to have my own place. You know, I was lucky to sneak my application past the school, I'm surprised it even worked in the first place. I'm a second year, so by the time I graduate, I'll be 19. A fully grown adult." For the moment, it seemed like Hugh had forgotten his plight. "I imagine the monthly fees are high, right? usually in the 2000-3000 range is how much you gotta pay. I can't imagine a free university. I'd have to take out a loan. Or, get three jobs and work long hours right after school. Not saying I have to get into university right when I turn 19, but I'm gonna need a place. Either way, I'd have to start working." Hugh figured. "I guess if I stash away the Diend Driver, and leave all of the stuff I "took" on the local police's doorstep one night, that would solve that problem. I dunno about education or a living situation though. Only way I'd be able to afford university in any immediate way is if I worked for someone rich who paid high." Hugh said, not even having a clear plan for what he'd do when he graduated high school. |
