It was the dead of night. The park and trails around the mountain's base had long since closed, left in the care of one man. Jordan Hariyama, age 35, security guard, university dropout. On the cusp of middle age he found himself in an easy, simple (if not very prestigious) job here with the park service. Most nights it was quiet with the occasional young couple trying to sneak in and treat it like their own personal make out park.

He stepped out of his office and looked up at the night sky. The stars were vivid tonight, lit up like distant lamps. Contemplating his life's choices, he stared into one particularly bright celestial body which seemed especially near tonight. He'd never studied astronomy or anything. Maybe it was the north star? Or Sirius? Who knew...

The wind picked up. Jordan shivered, diverting his gaze back to the warm light of his station. Suddenly, fire in the sky. The blackness of the dead of night was drawn away like approaching headlights. He stared upwards in disbelief as the nearby star was growing even larger, brighter, wider? The realization dawned on him even as he thought it. Something was falling to earth.

Dumbfounded, Jordan rushed inside to his radio, fiddling with the dial even as he pulled out his cell phone. To his confusion, neither seemed to be working. Someone had to know about this! As he hopelessly tapped his cell the light outside began to resemble daylight. A thick, loud thud echoed through the park, shaking the ranger station.

All at once the light faded, the stillness returned and outside smoke plumes spiraled silently upwards from the crater outside. He set down his phone, mouth agape as he wandered outside barely registering the heat warming the grounds around the cabin. The grass was scorched and the dirt heavily displaced by the cavernous impact in front of him. Five, maybe six feet wide and just as deep.

Jordan broached the edge of the crater with slow, easy steps suddenly finding himself worrying about things like space radiation or cosmic diseases. Those were things right? His thoughts were interrupted by something he couldn't quite see and he squinted his eyes trying to make out the source. Movement of some kind. He leaned forward, closer, closer...

A deep-throated roar exploded the night's uneasy peace. A man screamed, crunching, guttural grumbling and then silence again.

From the crater a human-shaped creature emerged. Naked, but featureless it stood on the edge of the crater, staring upwards. "Earth..." The stars told her where she'd landed. She was here.

"Whoa." Lucid poked her head out of a nearby bush. "Looks like 'gravity' strikes again!"

In this case, somebody got eaten by a space alien. So clearly, this meant that things were going to go smoothly, just like that park ranger dude down the extraterrestrial's gullet. Or space gullet, if she wanted to be more accurate. Actually, that made her wonder. Would this alien digest people with a space stomach, or was there some other fancy method that it would use?

She'd have to ask later.

"Alien! How do you do?" She stepped out, waving cheerily as she did. Now, she did hear the creature speak a language she could understand. So clearly, it meant the whatever could understand what she said. Logic!

She stuck her hands back into the pockets of her hoodie, tilting her head as she looked the alien over. What an odd specimen. It was human minus certain bits, like a face. Faces were necessary, right? Well, strictly speaking, it needed a face if it wanted to blend in. It could just go blank headed otherwise.

"Why are you here, alien? Is your ship broken? Are you going to send more of your people here to eat us all?" She continued to look the figure over, eagerly asking about its purpose here as she did.

"OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!" "That reaction is how I KNOW I did a good job!"
Hyakuji's students had dorms, and were supposed to...well, sleep in them at night. Ian Vaner's 'dorm' was actually an unused janitor's closet on the first floor of Yuki building, and he actually used it to store biomass and genetic 'backups' of what he'd eaten, basically being an infested blob of fats, meat, and neural tissue. He preferred sleeping outside and prowling the night. It wasn't uncommon for him to prey upon some ne'er-do-well, and he relished a chance to be a sort of hyperviolent vigilante. Between that and outright hunting for food like a nocturnal predator, nights at Hyakuji could bring him all over the city.

A meteor impact was hard to miss. Dark nights, a bit distant from the city's light pollution, and a flaming dunk from the cosmos? He wasn't exactly expecting an alien, and his only experience with an extra-terrestrial, Valentine, was abysmal and extremely hostile anyway. Really, he'd just hoped for a souvenir, or maybe he could sell off the space rock to a research agency. The local museum was out of the question, being more like a Take-A-Penny Leave-A-Penny tray for criminals needing some random whatsit.

He'd been decently nearby, he'd heard the roar, followed by a yell and the distinctive crunchy sounds of a human skeleton being chewed up. That was a sound he was familiar with, alright. Ian wasn't sure what to expect now, his fingers sharpening and elongating, ready to spring into full-blown claws in a moment if needed. Hearing Lucid's voice, he arrived a bit after she finished speaking, and to his credit vaguely attempted to be amiable:

"Howdy."

First contact with an alien life form, and this was the solemnity of the affair. Not the best representative of humanity, was he? Then again it really could be argued that Ian was only visibly and formerly human. Ian, coming from America and raised by an adoptive father from Berlin, knew Japanese, English, and German. On the off chance it mattered, he could have cycled through greetings in all three languages and possibly offer a sort of Rosetta Stone, but he wasn't thoughtful enough to come up with that.

Faces, voices rising above the hunger. The being 'observed' the two approaching figures. Foolishly, their expressions appeared friendly. Ah, faces. Here Soren had gone and forgotten such an important trait of lesser species. They needed to look at one another to communicate and take in the world around them. So ridiculous. A pair of dead yellow orbs would slowly emerge from the flesh around where the sockets would ordinarily be. Lights slowly formed inside indicating life. An upturned nose followed with a pair of red, clover-shaped lips.

Garments. As it blinked its newly-formed eyelids 'clothing' began to emerge from its body as well. Based in part on what it was observing, with a few minor adjustments. All-in-all, a foolproof disguise. Now she had to consider just what to do with these two individuals. It had already been observed devouring one human and yet it was addressed without caution so why not two or three? At the same time, this species was prone to panic and mayhem, inferior as it was. Deception was the safer route. With one outstretched hand, it imitated the Earth symbol of peace, the human heart.

Vocal cords pulsed into being from inside its throat making it cough up a strange, grey phlegm. "I..." It said in whispered Japanese. "Not alien. I am a human. Became lost." Its voice was raspy and weak, but mostly human sounding. Somewhere on the edge between feminine and masculine but definitely neither. "I am...Soren." A name based on a species of their kind found on Earth. It was both deceptive and appropriately respectful of its advanced nature beyond that of human comprehension. The Halian were not above the use of clever irony. It was their plaything. "You will help me not to be lost." It asked, almost more matter-of-factly than as a question. It blinked a few times, an unnatural-looking imitation. Expressionless, it looked back from one of their faces to the other as if to say 'see I have eyes that I use too'.

Deception now seemed the best course of action more than before. Already it was beginning to feel Earth's bacteria attempting to invade its unadjusted immunities. Fighting off multiple million varieties of microbes was going to take time and energy. It would require more feedings and less conflict. First, it must get away from the crash site to avoid suspicion, but it would return later for the 'ship'.

Now, to say Lucid was not taken in was an understatement. She was dumb, but even she could see that the alien was an alien. It was pretty hard to convince even the least capable of people otherwise when they saw and heard that much. That said....

"Yes, human person. Soren. You are lost... FROM YOUR HOME PLANET." She waved her arms around in clear disbelief and amusement. "If you are really a human, then what is in your chest?"

She pointed at the girlish figure before her, assuming that it was a killer question that could not be beaten. Maybe. She was pretty sure that nobody past elementary school age would be ignorant of the names of their organs. The fool even turned to Ian and jabbed a finger at Soren.

"You see that, red haired guy? Back me up on this one, it's totally an alien."

She then turned back, putting her hands to her hips.

"Well, even if you answered right, you did come down and make a big crater. I think I actually see your ship." She stood on her tip-toes. "Wait for it. Waaaait. No, not really. But if I looked around, it'd be there."
