[Finale] Saving the World

Kazuya
Kuze

“Was… was that it?”

Despite the attacks everyone used on the monster, Kazuya still figured it would just continue to tank them all. After Spike basically calls out the monster, it seems to… well, kill itself. After taking a breath to himself, he finally registers what just happened. For whatever reason, rather than fufill his “duty” to his “masters”, he chose to end his own life. Perhaps when it said it felt sympathy, when it said it would spare them all if it could, it spoke the truth. Whatever the reason, it lays dying by its own hand, and their world will continue to live. “If it was your own choice or if your duty changed, I can’t say. But if you made the decision to sacrifice your life so that we may live, I’d like to personally thank you…”

After offering his silent thanks to a MONSTER, a monster who may not have even allowed them to live of their own will (as well as making sure it isn’t just playing possum and going to kill anyone who gets too close), Kazuya turns around, and flies off to someplace secluded where he can get back into some casual clothes, and find a way back to the city.

As soon as he remembers how exactly he even got HERE, to begin with.

Fun times...

The explosion of a roof in front of her got Natsumi's attention. There was some sort of fighting going on there, and she couldn't make heads or tails of it (was that her homeroom teacher?), and in the distance, the monster began tearing itself apart.

Natsumi did the only thing she could think of.

She bent down, picked up a good-sized rock, and chucked it as hard as she could over the heads of the rooftop combatants. Then a second, for good measure.

"Stop fighting!"

Another glance at the monster. Another rock in her hand. She cocked it back, narrowed her eyes, took aim directly at them this time.

It felt a little wrong, a little weird, that the monster had ripped into itself, like she had intruded into something personal by just being there. A suicide - a suicide so that the world could keep living. Nothing like the fight they had had at first; nothing like the fight she had expected.

"Can't you see?" Natsumi swallowed, and she was surprised by how dry her throat was as she echoed Saigyouji's words. "It's over."

"The hell is that?" Away from the Frostfire base camp and having no idea of Shun's intervention the PMC gunship continued to fly circles around the vicinity as it went on the hunt for the student-turned-rogue Lenny Barrons, but other than providing air support for straggling friendly forces by opening fire on the bio-artisan's creations the crew could find no traces of the creatures' master, at least until she appeared.

After having already gone face to face with an eldritch ender of worlds, and themselves being combat-hardened former military regulars the PMC troops fancied themselves to be folks who'd seen it all... until they found themselves face to face with Cariot, the pink blob that looked like a girl (or was it a girl that looked like a pink blob!?) waving at them. "Hellfires armed," the pilot remarked as a holographic display matrix showing a green wireframe model of the Black Hawk popped up, the armed missile flashing in red.

"No, wait! It looks like she's on our side!" the co-pilot retorted, giving his comrade an elbow nudge to stop him from firing. And true enough, the girl that looked like a giant pink blob spoke, trying to draw their attention to the nearby foreman's office. "Talon-1 to Ms. Frostfire. Talon-1 to Ms. Frostfire, do you read me?" the Black Hawk crew radioed in to Selene. "We've gotten a tip-off from an unknown benefactor on the possible location of one Lenny Barrons, we're going in first; over."

"Frostfire to Talon-1, loud and clear," Selene replied to the gunship over her comms earpiece. "I see you," the corporate heiress continued as one of the mercs leaned out of the gunner's door, hanging on to a railing with one hand and waving a lit magnesium flare in the other to signal for the pumpkin-haired magus' attention. "You have the green light, neutralize any hostile creatures you may encounter, but under no circumstances are you to attempt lethal force on Lenny Barrons." The priority would be to detain the rogue student, preferably without physically harming him.

Ignoring the straggling haemonculi unless they tried to impede her progress, the Geisinian War Hulk would continue on its warpath towards the foreman's office - so close, yet so far away. Meanwhile however, the distinctive droning of helicopter rotors would grow louder as the Black Hawk hovered near the building. "Engage thermo-optics," as the gunship scanned the building with advanced thermal imaging systems, the pilots would be able to pick up on the occupants' heat signatures on their display matrices, registering three heat signatures - two human in shape and size, and a larger obviously non-human one.

"Lenny Barrons!" the pilot's voice boomed over a loudspeaker as the gunship slowly circled the building from above. "We have the building surrounded; escape or resistance is futile and we urge you to turn yourself in to school authorities here and now!" the pilot continued, his amplified voice audible over the droning of the rotors. "Failure to comply means we will have no choice but to forcibly detain you, and will no longer be able to guarantee your safety!"

"And so this is how it ends?" Jen wondered as she watched the unthinkable happen - if she thought the assembled defenders' attacks somehow being effective against the apocalypse beast was a sight to behold, what followed next was nothing short of mind-blowing, as the creature - now revealed to be in fact an intelligent being with a capacity for empathy - not only took the attacks leveled against it head-on, it even facilitated the defenders' efforts by making a decision to self-terminate. And speaking of self-termination, from the corner of her eye the purple-haired girl noticed a certain Brazilian reach for a pistol...

"Senhor Abilio, não!" Jen shouted as she attempted to tackle the hacker, but skidded to a halt as soon as Abilio had the gun to his head before the girl could move a muscle. "And you seriously think your death is going to fix anything?" she retorted as Abilio made another bitter diatribe about all the lives he'd taken in the name of his revolution, and the recent chaos he'd created in Tokyo that'd undoubtedly screwed many innocents over.

"One man dying isn't going to bring back the dead, or undo the previous damages caused," Jen continued, trying to empathize with the hacker as she slowly moved closer towards him, being very wary to not make any sudden moves lest Abilio might go ahead with his suicide attempt out of shock, or worse, turn his weapon against her instead. "But one man can set right what he did wrong by working to prevent himself from making that same mistake, and preventing others from following in his footsteps, I mean, I don't know about you, but I think if killing ourselves is the only way to make up for a past mistake then by this logic then should we all just kill ourselves then?"

"Because unless one is God or Buddha, whether knowingly or unknowingly we have ALL screwed someone over at some point or another in our lives. And even Buddha himself was human once, as Prince Siddartha," the purple-haired girl continued, shrugging slightly. She was hardly the religious type, but often found religious texts to be an interesting read due to the philosophical aspects, and whether she admitted it or not certainly played a role in shaping her view of the world. "You may not be able to change the past, but you can still shape the road ahead of you, if you wished." Though the irony of it all was that if the Apocalypse Beast had its way, to destroy the world and rebuild it would effectively have allowed Abilio to change the past by ensuring that his earlier mistakes never existed.

It...it was over? It was dead? Suicide?

She did hit that...green thing. With a pen. And then jumped off it. It's heart? Soul? What was it? An obvious core, yes, but of what? Questions upon questions. Why? Why did it do that? Why commit suicide? It said it had a duty to remake the world. No quarter, it said. No inch given. And after that entire spiel, it offers itself up to death just a bit later?

That groan. Yes, it was dying. It's final moments. Certainly dissolving. End of World Scenario cleared. World was safe. But...what was it, in the end? A tool? It had masters. Where were these Masters?

Ami landed on the coast, staring on as she staggered and supported herself by leaning on a natural rock formation on the cape. The adrenaline from the preceding minutes were leaving her system, ragged breath coming from a body screaming in pain, filled with lactic acid. Aching. Lots of sleep once she got back to her room.

"That's...it....?"

Really, was that it? Commit suicide, world is safe, everyone go back to your usual unusual lives? It can't be that simple. And yet...it seemed to be. That simple, huh. What next, was a ranking system going to appear out of thin air? Possibly. But yet...

"Still stuff going on..."

Yes, there was that...Problem was, did she care enough? The threat was dead. Everything else was appearing to just be side-problems that were being dealt with individually. Not much reason to interfere.

Eh, there's got to be some way back within a couple of hours, right?

ZEHAHAHA!!
The end of the fight came so very suddenly. The tanned girl's concrete slab was pushed away lightly by Nieves. Impact redirection was just one of many skills she practiced, as she would soon show. One palm came down like a meteor, the sheer power evident to all as it was about to crush Aya's head like a grape. At the last moment, a rescue courtesy of the teacher was all that saved her from the Ascetic's strength.

Lavender's surprise attack quite nearly got Nieves, though. With the explosion obscuring her vision, only a split second dodge spared her from severe injury as she slid closer to the aeromancer. The right straight barely missed her as she moved to deliver an upwards palm thrust to Lavender's chin.

Back in her initial foray at the Fairy Tail Guild Hall, Nieves had displayed an instantaneous acceleration technique. Using it meant she could immediately move at maximum speed from a still position. Right now, she had come up with a new way of using it. Had her palm made contact with the soldier's chin, she would've used the technique with her arm.

Zero distance, full power. There would not have been any chance of escape.

But it was not to be. She halted just before contact, withdrawing her attack and retreating a few steps. She raised her chin and looked to Saigyouji.

"It is. You have won."

With that, Nieves pressed her hands together and bowed to them. Her defeat had come out of the blue, but she would accept it. As the one who had lost the struggle for the next era, she would accede.

"The Beast made its choice. Its sacrifice will not be made light of." She said quietly. "This new dawn will belong to you and yours, o denizens of Hyakuji."

For better or for worse, the struggle for the world had ended. All that was left to do was clean up the mess that had been caused.

-------

"Hey, we're alive! Things turned out better than we expected, and I'm not even sure why!" Lucid raised her arms to the air, grinning super cheerfully as Misogi circled around before landing. "USA! US- I mean, HYA-KU-JI! HYA-KU-JI!"

She hopped off her friend, patting the miko on the shoulder and thanking her for her assistance. Wow, they had somehow saved the world, and they didn't even have to blow up a country doing it. This was pretty cool!

"Ara, ara. I see that the people of Hyakuji are possessed of great mettle. My brothers and sisters will adore your city, Lucid-san."

The white haired fool agreed vigorously. Seriously, things had gone great! Oh, boy. These next few years would totally be fun. For now? Well, Fate was kind of going nuts. She needed some calming down, yep.

"Yo, Faaate! You going nuts up there? Listen, the Beast is totally dead and I'm pretty sure butchering the dead is really not heroic! So settle down, you're still young and there'll always be more chances to be a hero!" Lucid called out.

-------

Kell howled in agony as she was slammed into the concrete, though it wasn't an unfamiliar situation. Between the brutal training of her youth and the exterminations she had participated in since that time, she was used to being introduced to such surfaces with tremendous force. Still, she wasn't in any condition to run, at least for the time being.

Meanwhile, John had no choice but to use himself as a cushion for the wrestler. As he was bowled over, he called after Lenny, who was running away like he tried to earlier.

"Curse you, dastardly traitor! You'll not elude justice today!"

He scrabbled to his feet, chasing after the escaping artisan while Kell was left to stagger after them. She grumbled and raged, murder clearly evident in her eyes.

"Fucker, I'm gonn- HUH?!" While the jelly swordsman was too focused on stopping Lenny, the wrestler saw the monster kill itself. Holy shit. She didn't- FUCK, YEAH! One done like a turkey, one to go! Reinvigorated by the sight, she renewed the chase with the scent of blood on her nose. Of course, that was neatly interrupted by the arrival of Frostfire PMCs. Both the wrestler and the jello swordsman tensed up, but decided to halt.

Moving into the line of fire was not a good idea, and she was most definitely not bullet-proof. That said....

"Cariot, it's your time to shine!"

With a nervous laugh, the pink blob dropped down from 60 feet above the artisan. Even if she didn't have her safety at sake, she was in her little spotlight now. That in itself was unnerving to her.

"BUDDHA FORGIVES YOOOOU!" Cariot cried out before she tried to slam into Lenny and knock him off of the Phylactery. She might have been rubbery, but she had the weight of a teenager and the aid of gravity.

As the large, armored spider beast retreated, both Kell and John would see something unusual happen. It’s back split open a bit like a beetle and Lenny, seemingly synchronized with the creature, slid into the orifice opened before the creature’s armored back slid closed again. It was at this point that the Phylactery plowed through the wooden front of the office, and directly into Frostfire’s position.

The beast looked left and right with its rows of eyes, wary of the blaring warning that it, nor its master could understand, the Hive Mind had no comprehension of language. Lenny and the Phylactery were largely on their own, all haemonculi had been disposed of except for three Dart haemonculi on the other side of the battlefield. The Phylactery opened its toothy maw and let out a low, hissing gurgle, swinging its myriad of tentacles like an agitated cat.

Cariot struck the beast on its left shoulder, her mass and speed due to the fall caused it to lose its footing on its left side and fall on its three left legs. The creature was stunned for a few moments, and immediately began running North, away from the hulking form of the war golem, and towards a doubtful escape. The beast began moving, slowly at first until its own mass let it move in larger strides. The Hive Mind’s main goal was to escape with the Bio-Artisan.

"...You talk a lot, don't you?" Abilio remarked, not without some irony, as he turned to look at Jen.
"Because let me ask you this then. What the hell am I meant to, eh? What makes up for almost destroying the world? For causing the deaths of at least dozens, probably hundreds, and maybe thousands? Some people can shrug that kind of thing off their conscience, with just a 'well what's done is done', or maybe 'well it's all in the past'. But you know what? They shouldn't. Not that easy. Because its not just 'the past'. Its not just what I 'did'. Its who I did it to. I never killed some raging maniac with no living relatives, or monsters born of apocalyptic flame." He looked to Jen, his expression on the verge of a strange laughter, cocking his head with a self-scorning grin.

"I don't know about 'God' or 'Buddha' - kinda hard where I came from - but I know there are things in this world that some might call higher powers. One of them just waltzed its way out of the pacific a couple years after the last one. And neither they, or anything else I bet you could name, are worthy are worship. So there's only us then. Only people. And I killed some of those people, with friends, family, dreams and ambitions. Just as was done to my wife and child." In a brief moment of anger, Abe had almost turned the weapon in his hands on Jen herself, but had restrained as the memories and self-loathing kicked in once more. He looked down at it, the small and yet somehow potently heavy weapon, waiting to do the one thing for which it existed.

He turned away, walking down the hill, and towards the coast. The handgun twirled in his hands, with final considerations to be made...

But should Jen try and follow, all she would find is that, after briefly making a quick turn around some debris flung up in the whole mess, he was gone. And though the storm had largely cleared, it managed one last loud clap of thunder...

As the heroes celebrated, grimaced, and various other forms of victory celebration, the beast finished it's last breaths. It seemed...both at peace but somewhat resentful of the situation. It began to shudder as it continued to seemingly evaporate into nothingness. A low grumbling noise could be heard from it's center, before it began to grow into something that seemed to shake reality. And then...the beast shattered. And the shaking stopped.

Black particles that made up the beast dispersed into nothingness for the most part, but some of the particles flew into the remaining two kings, while the rest flew off into the distance. Lady Sai and Nieves would find the aspects taken from them returning, the memories and experiences, those parts of themselves returning.

Indeed, it was official. The beast was dead. Completely and utterly. But had something happened with it's dying actions?

Only time would tell.
