Rice Girl Visits the Arcade; [OPEN]

Jun had visited big cities before. With eight brothers it was a crime to keep them cooped up in a tiny rice village year round and thankfully they let her tag along too. So the initial shock of coming to Hyakuji had been pretty brief but an arcade was a different story. She'd had friends who had game systems and she had a PC with some simple games on it but nothing like this Mecca of lights and noise.

No sense coming all this way and not having a little fun...

Picking out the nearest machine Jun looked it up and down, admiring the multicolored buttons flashing rhythmically to the arrows on the screen. The instructions seemed simple enough, just hit the buttons and keep up with the arrows on the screen. Hmm... "Would it be cheating if I..." Well how could it be? This was Hyakuji, everyone had some kind of advantage, right?

Well, here goes nothing... A familiar tingling shot down her now empowered arms, the vibrations making her tiny hands a blur of motion as her qi channeled itself according to her command. KNM as she called it, her own form of martial magic. Used to cheat at a child's arcade game. The old man would be proud.

"T-that took more energy than I thought..." Jun said, gasping for air. Damn, now she was really hungry...

"That's cheating."

The voice of Weiss, who was dressed in her usual European dress which stuck out like a sore thumb regardless of where she went, stood not too far from Jun. Fortunately, this was a game centre, and it actually didn't stick out as much as it usually would. After all, staff did sometimes cosplay, although she probably still stuck out considering the staff were in regular work clothes... Not to mention Weiss didn't even work at the arcade...

Actually, come to think of it, when did Weiss start visiting game centres...? Then again, Weiss did seem to have a habit of wasting time doing nothing useful.

For example, watching people play games at game centres, and then call them out for cheating... Although, it probably technically wasn't cheating?

Well, it didn't matter, it wasn't going to stop Weiss from saying it!

"For cheating, you now owe me lunch."

The mystery of why Weiss went to the arcade has been solved.

Instead of leeching off Amane's money, Weiss is leeching off someone else's money for lunch today. Well, it has been a while since Weiss had done something odd, so she had to make up for all that time before now by doing something extra special. Why Weiss continually leeches off other peoples' money when she can easily afford lunch will forever remain a mystery.

Sweating profusely she glanced over at the strangely dressed girl who brashly called her out like that. "Oh crap a rich girl!" Jun had heard of these kinds of girls. Western, wealthy; they'd tear you apart with a few well placed insults! What was someone like that doing in an arcade??

"I-It's not really cheating is it? I mean it's like how tall people are better at certain sports, they can't help it right? So I-- eh? L-lunch?" Was she down on her luck or something? Actually, did that mean she didn't work here? "Well..." Jun's empty stomach gurgled on cue and she brought up her arms to hold in the pain. Right... her power needed a lot of fuel for stunts like that and she hadn't eaten since coming to town.

Guess she didn't have a choice.

Interior: mall food court.

Jun had a decent amount of savings for food and other essentials so one extra meal wouldn't hurt too bad. Besides she could hardly eat as much as Jun did... "So which one looks good to you? I don't think I've seen so many choices in one place!" Chances are she'd end up getting a little of everything anyhow...

[It is 7am, and I have been up since 6am so I apologise if my post might be a little bad.]

...Apparently accusing someone of cheating on an arcade game is an effective method of getting a free lunch... It will probably remain a mystery for the rest of time how exactly that worked...

"Being tall is also cheating."

There you have it, being tall is officially cheating in sports. Everyone tall, and plays sports now owe Weiss a free lunch. It's a good thing the girl playing the game wasn't tall, otherwise she would have owed Weiss not one, but two free lunches.

Interior: Mall Food Court

After Weiss's terrible brilliant plan to get a free lunch somehow succeeded thanks to some unknown miracle, Weiss found herself in the food court with a girl she practically just met(?). Of course, that wasn't going to stop Weiss accepting a free lunch!

If it was any consolation to the poor girl that happened to meet Weiss, Weiss wasn't a particularly big eater, although that didn't mean she didn't each much either...

But now the question was what exactly did Weiss want to eat? Well, it wasn't too late into the day, so maybe they could go to a cafe and have something like cakes! With tea to go along with it!

"Let's go to a tea house."

...A tea house...?

Even for cafe standards, those places were awfully expensive... It wasn't even a Japanese one Weiss wanted to go to. Nope, it was that expensive looking place over in the distance which clearly specialised in western tea.

Well, at least it was a normal suggestion for once... It was just that the situation she was in wasn't remotely normal.

This girl was pretty ballsy just asking for stuff like that... Still, Jun was just trying to be neighborly. It was just how she was brought up. She was clearly used to something a little above typical mall fare so... "...A tea house, huh? That's uh... I mean is there even one nearby? I don't know the city that well and I don't want to wander too far..." It was a good attempt but really she was too hungry to go very far anyhow.

Interior: mall tea house

"C-City malls really have everything these days, don't they?" She said, cautiously admiring the very traditional designs on the walls. She felt a little out of place here, more so than anywhere else since getting here. Her eyes settled on a stylized menu hung daintily above the front counter where the prices stared boldly back at her. How do normal people eat at places like this?! "Are you sure this is what you want? We could always--" her stomach growled angrily in protest. They weren't going anywhere, she needed to eat now.

"N-never mind this is fine..." She said, doubled over. A man in a cheap kimono ushered the two inside, showing them to a fancy wood table. Jun folded her skirt carefully as she knelt almost scared of touching anything. "Is it weird I've never been to a place like this? I'm not even sure what kind of food they have..." Her eyes had been afraid to wander past the appetizers after seeing the prices...

Fortunately (unfortunately), Weiss knew where exactly a Tea House was! As a person who specialised in leeching off other people's money for lunch, she knew exactly where the overpriced and obscure places were! Plus, Weiss also liked tea, so of course she knew where the tea house was, and Hyakuji wasn't exactly a huge place, so most of the shops were focused in one place.

Well... The prices weren't so ridiculous that a normal person could eat here, but it was probably twice as expensive as somewhere like Starbucks... And Starbucks was already a rip off... That was not to mention how small the cups looked in the picture... Although, the food was the worst. A tiny piece of cake, yet for the price you could probably buy two or three pieces of a cake from a proper cake shop...

When even the orange juice costs 500 yen, you know the prices are overpriced.

The funny thing was, Weiss didn't even like the food here. She only came for the tea. Well, she liked some of the cakes, but the actual food menu wasn't particularly to Weiss's taste, even if it was all European (or at least, looked European...?).

"Chiffon cake and rose blossom tea."

...Weiss certainly ordered fast...

"If it's your first time here, I recommend the Pretzel. It is a very rare and filling food. I hear that a single pretzel is enough for breakfast, lunch and dinner."

...Weiss, everyone in the world knows what a pretzel is, and that certainly isn't an accurate description of one... Also, Weiss was very much the opposite of how her new friend was reacting... Then again, Weiss did go to Tea Houses quite often. Plus, the cheap kimono certainly didn't help give the impression of a fancy Tea House...

The rice girl flinched at her guest's swift, simple order. "Sophisticated!" Jun cried in broken english. This girl was totally used to a different type of living than she was. It was hard not to feel a little intimidated, but she was taught proud of where she came from and wasn't going to feel jealous or anything! Really this was the kind of thing her parents warned her about. Besides, this stuff looked so tiny! She was going to need to spend an awful lot just to get her hunger pangs under control. If she could figure out what anything was. This was the kind of place her family used to make fun of....

Thankfully there were at least a few things on there that weren't totally bizzare and western. She just needed to think on her feet a little. Okay, strategy! Pick simple carbs, load up on those! Also desserts! They're all so weird, but it might be cheaper just to get a tray... "I can do this!" Her eyes flashed, her stern gaze swinging towards the waiter. Do it! "T-T-Two grilled salmon toast, two smoked salmon toast, two read bean butter toast, two raspberry butter toast, o-o-one dessert assortment, two fifteen grain rice, two fifteen grain rice porridge, gyokuro tea and a pretzel!" Wait, did she say gyokuro?

Geeze, so pricey...

Jun took a deep breath, gently setting her head on the table face down. She was supposed to have enough money for three months while she looked for a job. At this rate she'd need a job within the week... Assuming she didn't use her abilities at all... "H-Hey, rich girl... what's your name anyway?" She said through a muffled face-full of napkin. It felt a bit like asking the name of your executioner right before he pulled the switch...

Jun reminded herself to lay off the detective shows a little...

Sophisticated...?

Weiss...?

One word that shouldn't ever be used with Weiss.

"Sophisticated? I just order quickly so that the person I am with cannot order for me."

See, no sophistication. Just a determination to get the lunch she wants for free. Well, if it makes Weiss look sophisticated at the same time, it was practically two birds with one stone, right? At least the rice girl now has it confirmed that she isn't the only victim of Weiss's leeching habits.

Although, Weiss certainly wasn't expecting the girl to order so much food...

Then again, given the size of the dishes, it was actually probably not going to be much. The only thing big about the food in this Tea House was their prices. Well, if she ever needed a job, Weiss was more than happy to pay people to do stuff she couldn't be bothered to do, which was practically everything. Oh, maybe she could hire her to annoy people Weiss liked to annoy. It truly was a genius idea, even Weiss was proud of herself for thinking of it.

"Are you sure you will be able to eat the pretzel? If you can't, I will finish it for you."

...The person who really wanted the pretzel was Weiss, wasn't it?

"My name is Frederica Weiss. I am a student at Hyakuji High. My hobbies are doing stuff I like, and not doing stuff I don't like. How about you? And why do you have so many napkins?"

What an odd pair. One girl was wearing a European dress from what looked like medieval nobility, and the other just ordered tonnes of overpriced food. God only knows what the staff of this place must have thought.

"They say western women are really independent, you really do seem sure of yourself..." Jun said, turning her head to the side to face her lunch guest. She smirked a bit. For a rich, western moocher Jun kind of liked this girl. She plain talkin', like this old lady she knew growing up who always told her brothers off when they would act too wild.

...Wait were those things really hobbies? Nevermind, this person was just weird...

"F-Fredoooorukia...Eheh...Weiss?" Was that French or something? Jun wondered if it was okay to ask. "Well, my name's Daiko Jun and-- oh hey I just started attending that school too! I guess I destroyed one-too-many rice fields and I guess my parents thought I needed to get my abilities under control cause y'see I learnedtodomartialartsfromthishomelessguy" inhale onlyhewasn'tsomebumhewaslikeaguruorsomethingidon'tknow gasp butthenhedisappearedandilostcontrolof--" Jun sucked her lips into her mouth, suddenly realizing how fast she was talking. "W-Well anyway I guess you can see why I need to go to a school like this..." That kind of stuff was always happening when she wasn't paying attention. It was like she needed to monitor herself 24/7 just to make sure she didn't accidentally slip out of normal time.

What kind of martial art does that to a person? Stupid old man...why did he have to go an urinate on that pub? "I guess...I don't really have any hobbies. I like games and books and music and stuff. I mean normal stuff everyone likes, right?" Truth was she liked a lot of girly things, but she always felt weird saying it out loud to people. Maybe because she grew up with so many boys in the house and got teased for it a lot but no one else ever really seemed to mind outside her family. Either way, maybe she just felt opening up to this person... If you didn't include blurting out your life story.

Her stomach grumbled painfully and Jun realized she still hadn't eaten yet. "H-How long does food take to prepare in places like this?" She said, sorely tempted to start chewing on the napkins. One thing was for sure she was never going to use her powers for games like that again. Thirty minutes of it nearly had her keeling over as it was.

...Weiss was actually remarkably independent despite how odd her personality was... Although, she was independent in that odd way in that she could find people who looked out for her so that she didn't need to in the first place. Like Daiko, who is covering Weiss's lunch cost today!

Although, judging from the way Daiko spoke, it didn't seem as if she was from a city... They didn't have rice fields in cities. Well, they did around cities, but that still wasn't in the cities!

"Did you know for every rice field destroyed, Nikkei falls 0.05 of a point."

Thank you Weiss, your insight into the effects of destroyed rice fields on the economy will surely be of great use.

As for the rest of Daiko's story, Weiss couldn't quite make out what half of it was, but from what it sounded like she learned how to disappear from a homeless guy, or something like that. It sounded like a legit story, even if that was nowhere near what Daiko actually said. It would make a good story for the newspaper, right? Weiss will definitely publish it. Daiko! The girl who learned how to become invisible from a homeless man!

But first!

"How would you like to be in the school newspaper?"

Of course, getting permission was important! Of course, it was also important to not mention what exactly they were going to be in the paper for!

Quick, move the conversation before she gets the chance to properly think!

"The order should arrive almost straight away. Well, some of it anyway."

Because, you know, the order was sort of not what you would expect from a couple of people... Especially on Daiko's side of things...

Although, as Weiss said, some of the order did arrive. The drinks, Weiss's cake, and a couple of the toasts Daiko had ordered... Which mean there was probably going to be a lot more visits to the table.

"You know, the offer still stands. If you can't eat the pretzel, I will have it."

Jun's ears perked up a bit as Weiss spoke. Agricultural economics? Maybe they had more in common than she thought. "Ah ya I know what you mean, it's a shrinking industry these days and it doesn't help that all these retired people keep buying what little excess farm land is still available thinking they can live off the revenue just farming rice when rice farmers can't even do that. This isn't the 1930's anymore and they think it makes them 'real Japanese men' or something..." Amazing what you pick up at community meetings.

"We're mostly sweet potato and radish folk and you can't imagine the grief I got growing up for our self branded daiko daikon it's bad enough being called rice girl all the time and-- food!" Well no one ever accused her family of not having an opinion but Jun could let it rest for now if it meant getting to eat. The portions really were as meager as she feared, but it'd have to do. She took a careful bite of what she assumed was the smoked salmon toast. It looked... Smokey. With as delightful crunch she sighed deeply setting it down just as carefully.

"To be honest I hadn't really given much thought to clubs, I don't have a lot of skills or hobbies except maybe athletics so I was thinking of signing up for that... What would I do in the newspaper club?" She hasn't realized it till now but Jun was actually having fun, it was like she'd already made her first friend. She smiled and took a sip of her tea, before looking back at Weiss.

"How's your tea? Mine's better than I thought it would be. I haven't has this kind since my parents anniversary." She wasn't ignoring the pretzel thing it just seemed to keep falling by the wayside in her thoughts. Though the way she kept asking... "Y'know you remind me of a cat I once had... Is that a weird thing to say?" She said with a giggle and another bite of salmon toast. Now that she was eating Jun was really starting to perk up again.

Who knew there was someone else who was interested in economics like Weiss. At least Weiss could finally spill out nonsense about economy to someone who will finally listen to her! Although, at the same time, Daiko probably wouldn't listen to Weiss unless it was about agriculture. "Does this mean you're also interested in TPP? When I am not so sleepy, we should discuss it for hours and hours."

My God, please no.

"Those farmers should grow pretzels instead. I hear they are easy to grow, and sell for a high price. You should tell your family to change one of the destroyed rice fields into a pretzel field."

...A pretzel field...? Surely there is nobody on this Earth who would believe such an outrageous tale, right? Has Weiss been telling old people they can grow pretzels in the country side...? The worst part is, that sounds exactly like the type of thing Weiss would spend her time doing. Let's hope that Daiko knows more about pretzels than old people...

"Oh, I mean be in the newspaper. I have a great story. You can also join the club too. I guess you could write about pretzels. Like how people should start growing them in their gardens, and tips on how to nurture their pretzel field."

Weiss is either pushing the pretzel subject, or actually trying to persuade Daiko to grow pretzels in her dorm room...

Of course, by the time Daiko asked Weiss about her tea, she had already eaten her cake, and drank her tea.

"Oh, I forgot to order. I guess I will just have to order again. Rose blossom tea please. "

...If they fact they didn't just talk about how fast Weiss ordered a second ago didn't make it obvious enough, the empty plate and tea cup in front of Weiss made it more than obvious... Well, at least Weiss didn't order another cake if that was any bonus to Daiko.

"I am the cat you had. I have been turned into human form, and now you must feed me everyday. Also, pretzel."

...The worst part about it was, Weiss was actually just sitting there with a dead serious face the entire time, and speaking in her usual monotonic voice. If it wasn't for how ridiculous the things Weiss were saying, people would probably take Weiss seriously... No wonder old people listened to what Weiss said about the pretzel field...
