An ambient rain fell from the heavens, accompanied occasionally by the rumble of thunder. The water droplets danced upon the once still surface of the school’s lake, and once again the Lady of the Lake was gazing upon the only thing that remained of her past. Considering the weather no one would be out here, so Alexia had taken shelter inside the lakeside gazebo as she watched the rainfall.

Somehow the sound of rain was soothing to her, and she listened to it with a smile as she laid her head against her arms. She had always been fond of this lake, and had often snuck out of the confines of the church to gaze over it before being put in stasis so long ago. Since then the lake had shrunk to a fraction of its size, but the memories of her time remained and even now she liked the lake, though the reasons have changed.

A sudden change in the air put her on alert and both her wings bristled as Rakanoth and Sariel came to attention as well. Someone was approaching, someone that was vaguely familiar to her. They had only met once, but Lucid had left enough of an impression on Alexia during that time for the winged girl to be cautious of her. Naturally both her guardians were aware of this as well, and Rakanoth hissed out to the girl.

“We sense your presence human, what do you want from us?”

"Something really sharp to cut this cake with!" Lucid smiled as she held up a rather ordinary looking paper box, while she shook her large black umbrella in her other hand. "I hadn't baked seriously in a while, so I went and made a super honey cake. Super plain, super moist and tasty~"

She approached a few more steps, her mary janes splashing some puddles as she walked. She had lacked killing intent, which made her intentions harder to spot. All she did was bring a cake, for whatever reason.

"Come on, let's share and watch the lake. The rain will stop soon, so we should enjoy it while it lasts!" She giggled, then stopped at the bottom of the gazebo's steps. "Does that sound good? I can take the first bite of the cake if you don't trust me."

“A cake?” Even Rakanoth seemed surprised at what Lucid was doing, but that didn’t do anything to lower his guard against her. “If you wanted to eat cake you should have brought your own utensils.” A low growl sounded from behind Alexia as well, as if warning Lucid not to do anything rash.

“Rakanoth… she went through the trouble of making a cake to share, the least we could do is help her with this.” Alexia nudged back Rakanoth and smiled at Lucid. “Umm… I don’t have a knife or anything like that, but I think Sariel can do something.”

The pale woman nodded and held out a finger, which then extended and turned into a sharp thin blade of ice. “I trust this will be sufficient for cutting cake?”

"Haha! Oh, my roommate doesn't let me near knives anymore. She said she got tired of having to reattach her body parts since I'm pretty careless with sharp objects. That's why she practically pushed me out the door after I finished boxing the cake."

Lucid smiled widely. Taking the ice knife, she opened the box and plunged it in!

Well, she wasn't lying about that. Her cake cutting technique was dangerous and dazzling, and it was amazing that she didn't accidentally kill both Alexia and herself with her wild swings.

When she was done, she presented the cake to the blue haired girl. What was once an extremely generic looking golden-brown honey cake was now... a perfectly sliced round? Holy crap.

"Ta-daaa~! Enjoy it while it's still kind of warm!"

She held out the box, tilting her head as she gave a friendly smile to Alexia. Cake now, murder later!

To say that Alexia was disturbed by the fact that Lucid had dismembered her roommate, and more than once at that, was an understatement. But she did her best not to let it show and tried to laugh it off as an awkward joke. The moment the girl started cutting however, she realized that Lucid was dead serious. Even her guardians seemed mildly troubled, and Sariel shielded Alexia with a layer of ice as the blade danced dangerously close.

“U…Umm… thanks for the food…” Alexia took a slice of the cake from Lucid and began nibbling at it, but Rakanoth wasn’t so easily convinced. “What purpose do you have in seeking us out? I doubt that it was just so you could share some cake. And how did you find us so quickly? The cake is still warm so you couldn’t have been looking for long.”

"Oh, it was 'gravity'. The attractive force between people, which influences fate, brought me here today!" Lucid giggled. "Surely, this must be 'gravity'. Two tools meeting to decide their futures? Haha, truly an important moment in our lives!"

She tossed the knife into a wooden support beam, then took some cake and started eating as well.

"So, I know those two must have come to talk to you. So squishy, they are." She licked some crumbs off of her lips. "Sweet as this honey cake, indeed. Rough edged Saint Ryoga and tender hearted Shirena, they couldn't have hid the truth from you."

She tilted her head in silly delight.

"You know, this is the first time in a while that I've found myself in this position. Not eating cake in a gazebo, that happens a lot. I mean the chance for a simple yes or no question deciding how the next few minutes will go." She closed the box. "The cake isn't a weapon. It'll be a farewell gift if you don't answer it right."

With a very deliberate movement, Lucid stared right into Alexia's eyes and smiled. For the girl with the angel and demon wings, it must have been like gazing into the void.

"Were you created to be a weapon?"

“You sure have an interesting way of looking at things… But I guess that’s one way to putting it…?” It was as if the tension levels raised two fold, but yet all they were doing was eating cake. Of course, Lucid mentioning her real purpose in coming here didn’t help, and both Rakanoth and Sariel bristled with energy.

“Yes, we are aware that you have been hired to kill us. Both Seth and Shirena have warned us to beware of you, Lucid Talleyrand."

“Is that the value of a life nowadays? A single yen? If it weren’t for Alexia’s nativity I would have struck you down the moment I sensed you human.”

Alexia quietly finished her cake as her guardians spoke, and now stood away from Lucid. “…I’ll tell you what I told the others, I was made to protect my creators… So yes, I am a weapon, but I have no wish to remain one.” The winged girl met Lucid’s gaze with great difficulty. “Must I die because of the circumstances that I was born under?”

"Oh, you could say that about 'gravity'. But today might be a good day for you." Lucid laughed, nearly dropping her cake as she did. "I'm the only assassin you need to fear, after all~"

The fool set the cake down by the side, right next to her umbrella.

"Life doesn't have a value on its own, demon guy. What matters is what you feel towards others. And while I like Alexia, I like money more. Are you really fine with the fact that I'm more courteous than you, huuuh~?" She teased, wagging her finger at the grim reaper-like wing.

"Honesty is strong in you, Alexia. That's a nice virtue, but let's not sugarcoat it. I'm not going to acknowledge arguments of right and wrong. The only thing that matters is who I agreed to kill. 'Alexia, secret weapon of the Christians'. Very exacting description, there. If even one of those terms was wrong, it would follow that you're not my target. And if that's the case, a certain hooded lady agreed to a faulty contract. Veeeery harsh punishments for abusing my services would follow~"

She grinned as she put her hands to her hips and stood firm.

"You called yourself a weapon, plain and simple~" She said lightheartedly. "I'm not exactly like you, but similar. I was raised to be a vessel for something far greater than me, and I've gone on to be an assassin. But that doesn't mean I've stopped being a vessel. You haven't even changed, not yet. No masters left to protect, but you still function like a lost relic."

She held out two fingers.

"Since you insist on calling yourself a weapon, there's two other things you can argue about. 'Secret' and 'Christians'. Well, unless you want to argue that you're a shield instead of a weapon...."

“I…I will not hide from what I am… I owe Father Antonio too much to do that. He may be long dead… But he was my father in a way!” Alexia stood her ground, as foolish as it was. “I could tell you that I wasn’t created by the Christians of my time, and I could tell you that I wasn’t confined to the church most of the time because Father Antonio said the people aren’t ready yet, but I won’t.” She stood a little taller and more confident than she was before. “I won’t deny their life’s work!”

That was it. The girl basically outright told Lucid that she was indeed the one that the assassin had been hired to kill. Rakanoth and Sariel tensed, as if expecting Lucid to attack as soon as she got confirmation, but on the contrary Alexia relaxed her stance and sighed. “Lucid… if at all possible I really don’t want to fight you… okay? I know you’ve been hired to kill me, but it doesn’t seem like you have any loyalty to the Asahi no Tsuya. You said you liked money more… is it possible for me to hire you to protect me instead or something?”

"Oh, you want to honour them? What a good weapon you are~" Lucid twirled one of her long twintails. "But their intentions aren't so easily fulfilled, I'd think. Times really have changed."

She giggled when Alexia offered to hire her as protection. In her mind, she imagined the consequences. Lucid spread her hands out, her messy thoughts arranging themselves into one clear line. Yes, she could see what this meant for Alexia.

A speck of dark in the light, huh?

"Well, that's an option." She lowered her hands. "Since you are nice to me, I'll give you a discount. Instead of money, I'll be observing you. You want to move on from being a weapon? Fine by me, hehehe!"

She took a few steps forward, giggling as she did.

"What is it that you plan to do with your life from here on out? I want to know! Unveiling the mystery's my first payment, and then seeing if you can accomplish it will cover the rest of it. Struggles and suffering and love and happiness, I like to see things like that~!"

A sigh of relief came from Alexia and she smiled warmly at Lucid. “Thank you Lucid. It really means a lot to me that you’re giving me a chance.” That was a bit of an understatement, considering how Lucid basically agreed to spare her life. Sariel and Rakanoth backed down as well, but they remained on guard just in case Lucid suddenly decided to change her mind. The assassin seemed like a wild one after all, you can never be too safe.

“I guess I’ll try to live in today’s world… Well, I’ll have to get used to seeing so many people first. There were only about a hundred people back then, and now there are thousands… It’s a little scary really.” Alexia giggled slightly, a way to hide her nervousness perhaps. “And maybe I’ll enrol at the school. I see lots of interesting people passing by when I’m at the lake, so maybe it’d be fun too…”

Her voice trailed off, picturing the future. For the first time since being awakened in this time the girl has hopes for what her life might be like. A thought occurred to her and she looked sheepishly at Lucid. “U…Umm… how will you be observing me…? It’s a bit… unnerving to have someone watching you all the time you know…”

"Oh, think nothing of it. Just remember to stay gold." Lucid laughed, a warmth equal to Alexia's seeping through her voice. "I've observed all sorts of people considered by society to be irredeemable. Keeping my eye on somebody people would call good is a welcome break!"

She opened the box again, presenting the cake once more to her blue haired friend. Not a trace of tension had ever appeared in the fool's body, and she wasn't going to start second guessing things. Now was time for more eating.

"From what I've heard, it's okay to be scared. But it's also okay to take comfort in being with friends! Seth, Shirena, and me can be the first three. And more will come, they sure will~" She giggled. "Light is drawn to light, and dark is drawn to dark. So I guess by that, I mean we can be roommates!"

What a terrible metaphor, Lucid.

Alexia smiled and took another slice of cake. It was funny how a few minutes ago she was facing death and now here she was casually eating cake with the person that had been hired to kill her. “U…Umm… I don’t know how I can turn myself into gold… but I’ll try my best!” Looks like she’ll have to take a while to get acquainted with modern sayings and customs, but at least it’s something she can pick up fairly easily.

“But… what are you going to do about the Asahi no Tsuya?” The winged girl piped up between bites of cake. “I don’t know how they’ll take you backing out of your contract with them, and I don’t want anything to happen to my friend…” Based on what she heard in the recording Seth gave her, the Asahi no Tsuya wouldn't hurt bystanders, so Seth and Shirena should be safe. But Lucid had agreed to work for them, albeit for a single yen, so her case might be different from the others.

"Oh, huh. I thought you've read the Outsiders. Or that one Robert Blake poem." Lucid tilted her head, then laughed. "Okay, I guess I can give you my copies. They should be fine reads."

As someone who never took things personally, she liked to see that Alexia was fine with this state of affairs as well. She was right to trust in the blue haired girl, haha! Of course, that did leave one thing out of order. Her friend brought the matter up before she could begin blabbing about it, though.

"Oh, them. Well, I can tell the truth. You're a Hyakuji student, or will be soon. And Saint Ryoga's got you under his protection. I can point out that he might not be willing to play detective for me, but he would use it to track them and theirs if somebody happened to you." She mimed punching somebody right into the stratosphere. "Wham! Violence may breed violence, but he's the 2nd strongest and friends with other contenders for top ten in the school. Quelling the Asahi no Tsuya's no big deal if their head and body get thoroughly trashed in one night."

She giggled, pulling another slice out with great happiness.

"So, delivering news about the super stacked odds, they'd believe that I was simply way in over my head. And then I'd tell them that it's better in the long run to try not to do anything, because Seth would know it was them. You're not the only one they have to watch out for. Letting bigger fish swim free because they got too focused on you would be far worse of a failure than failing to kill you."

Lucid practically inhaled that piece of cake, grinning in triumph.

"Of course, when they eventually disregard my advice, they'll all burn and then you'll be fine. So don't worry, things will turn out great for you! And by extension, me."

“You know it’s not very nice of you to just go and assume we’ll all die so easily.”

The sentence had barely finished when two kunais came out of nowhere and flew directly at Alexia. Luckily Sariel was quick to respond and quickly threw up a shield of ice to deflect the attack. The two blades clinked to the ground harmlessly, but a moment later they glowed brightly before exploding in a flash of light. Alexia leapt out of the gazebo and onto the lake, kneeling on a patch of ice created by Sariel as she recovered from the flash bang while Rakanoth drew his bow and began searching for the source of the attack.

“I had a feeling it was too good to be true when you agreed to kill Alexia for only a yen, but I thought you’d be more professional than that, Ms. Talleyrand.” The hooded woman from the night before stepped out onto the shore flanked on either side by similarly dressed people who were holding katanas and other bladed weapons. “Well no matter, if you don’t feel up to the task we’ll take it from here.”
