How long had it been, exactly? It was hard to keep track of the time, but the yellow lightning bolt had returned to the city of Hyakuji.. Another mission had swayed her away from, well, finishing up the education she needed. The Colonel's mind worked in mysterious ways, and was impossible to sway by mere words. While it would be better and more efficient to send others on that mission, he had taken great interest in Fate's potential... As a result, whenever the Colonel had an excuse to send her face-first into some military shenanigans, she would get forced into them. Face first. It was... troublesome, to say the least. Fate was standing at the edge of a building with her eyes closed. A few minutes ago, she had moved herself there using her extreme speed. Seeing a person stand on the edge of a building like this was enough to generally inspire fear and worry into bystanders. But, she had chosen an large apartment building. With it being multiple stories high, it was hard for anyone to see her even as she was tethering off the edge like this. Spreading her arms like a crucified saint, she stepped forward and let her body tumble off the building. Her body was completely still and motionless, her eyes remained closed. This is probably the point where people would be able to see her fall. but, by now, it would be too late, wouldn't it? No matter what, in this situation, fear and panic will run through someone's mind. However, the longer the fall went on, the less and less these negatives clouded Fate's mind. Instead, a beautiful, unmatched clarity flashed through her mind. As she fell faster, her thoughts seemed to accelerate. The fear of impending death was the only thing that could truly detach a person from bothersome thoughts and worries. Only in this situation, one humans normally only get once in their life, can an ordinary person reach complete clarity. It is said that when faced directly with death, only regrets remain. When faced with death, you meet your true self. Isn't that a little late, though? Time had seemingly slowed to a crawl inside of the young girl's mind. Everything withered away. Above all, she wanted to become someone that could protect, right? That is what she always told herself. But was it real? With the Colonel on a different continent, she knew that she could finally leap off the edge of madness and into reality itself. He was a crazy man, but he wouldn't let her in any actual danger. After all, losing a potential hero in this state was a bit early... But now? He had no way to affect her. And the longer she fell, the more doubt creeped into her heart. Why? She wasn't selfish, right? She wanted to know more about herself. Ever since she met the Colonel, she felt like she just... lost sight of it all. Slowly, her blood-red eyes opened. The ground was inches away from her face. Ah, I see... The final shock of looking death in the eye was the final push she needed. Just before her body would be reduced to a bloody paste, she seemed to disappear. All any onlookers would see was a bright flash of yellow before the falling figure was reduced to nothing. Colonel was right... this feeling is different from anything I've ever felt. As if swept away at the last moment by some heavenly presence, Fate had simply become someone within the crowd. Even though she managed to avoid pain, her body wasn't happy by the stunt she just pulled. An extreme dizziness and nausea hit her, something that had left her mind completely untouched as she was falling. It seemed like now that she was truly certain of her survival, she was finally hit by the fear of what happened. After all, if she opened her eyes just a little bit later... Unable to hold her footing, Fate fell over, onto her backside. "O-oww..." It didn't actually hurt, it was nothing more than a desperate cry of attention. |

"Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider caaan~" A giggly, low voice could be heard from behind Fate. Next came the visage of Lucid as she stood on her tip-toes and bent over to look the blonde soldier in the eyes. She tilted her head slightly as she observed the lightning wielded lady, then smiled widely. "Quick reflexes there. I was wondering how long it'd take for you to go splat, but then you got out just fine!" Ten out of ten, said the fool's outstretched fingers. "Then again, you did have a good bit of ground left considering your power. Perhaps you weren't trying to kill yourself?" Only Lucid could say such morbid things with such a meaningless smile. Any other smile by any other person in that situation would've been full of dark amusement. But she lacked even that. Maybe it would've been luckier if that Fate had met one of those sadists or grave chasers. The fool crouched, moving to put her hands underneath Fate's armpits and lift her up as if she was a cat. "How about I help you get up? And in return, let's hear why you jumped, huuuh?" Jumpers had good stories, Lucid found. They were usually filled with despair. And despair was borderless and equal. More than that, even. Despair was normality, and it was always interesting. So, what worries did this lady carry in her heart? That would be nice to hear about, she thought. Lucid didn't do morbid curiousity, because she didn't really understand morbidity. All that she could do was wonder, in her own pure way. There was nothing more pure than emptiness, after all. |

Oh, bother. It really would've been a better idea to do this at night. That way, there was a practical guarantee of no one seeing her performing this rather... ludicrous act. Even Fate realized this. While the Colonel had managed to ram some changes into her young mind, she couldn't simply break away from how much of an airhead she was. But, even after giving it quite a bit of thought, she still decided to pull this stunt off in broad daylight. The reason eluded Fate, even after that insane jump. "I wouldn't go splat. I can fly, you know!" Fate said, crossing her arms in response to the comment. She wasn't all too bothered by the girl's comments, being used to a level beyond mere grimdark in everything the Colonel said. When Lucid decided to help her up, Fate simply accepted her help, climbing back onto her own two feet. In the few moments since Lucid appeared, she had already shaken off the near-death experience. Her shaking had stopped and her colour had returned to her skin. Fate's response would probably disappoint Lucid, however, as it was probably not what she was expecting. "Well, I just wanted to think." And it worked. For a moment, just as her eyes opened, she felt like she understood everything. But, when she decided to escape death, her clutch on all of it seemed to disappear. The closeness of the ground was, indeed, the final push she needed to get her answer. But then the answer ran away. Gah, annoying. Maybe if Lucid hadn't interrupted her train of thought... ...Well, maybe, this thrill wasn't enough? While she reached momentary enlightenment, it slipped away the instant she stopped grasping it. The Colonel's leash on her was tight, indeed. "My Lord told me that you think the clearest when you're in danger." he had even trained Fate to refer to him as Lord. It wasn't that she minded, of course, because she truly developed some respect and loyalty towards him. He was a crazy, sadistic man, but he was a genius. Even though some things he did had damaged her mind... Ehh, she couldn't hate him for it. For some reason, she felt the need to thank him for it. Even though she felt so disjointed from her own self, especially her past-self... it felt like he knew what he was doing, and did it for the good of her. Even though every bit of common sense in her mind told her she should hate him... At this point, she did her best to stop thinking about him. She was silent for a full five seconds before she continued talking. Thinking about her emotions regarding him always left her in a strange loop. "And, well, jumping with my eyes closed is the biggest danger I could think of?" |

"Oh sure, fly how?" Lucid giggled. "Like Superman? Then splat, you go extra hard into the pavement, headfirst!" She mimed a meat explosion with her hands, while making the stock sound associated with a bomb going off. "Sploosh. Body parts everywhere. Italian restaurants get their daily supply of meat sauce." Her giggling turned into loud, really discomforting laughter. "That's the price of overthinking things, right? You get to be served up with noodles on a plate." She tilted her head at the idea of this lady serving a lord, though. Wooow, was she from one of those weird civilizations where military people were the top of the food chain? It'd sure explain a few things. Like, wow. She was real curious about those types of people because she never met anybody straight from the carton, so to say. They always got processed by her superiors first. "Well, if you need danger, I can provide some right now!" She put her hands into the kancho position, waggling her arms while Fate looked at her. "The fear of getting butt poked is super strong in some people, right? So if you're super scared of it, I can clear your brain right out with the poking." |

Okay, it wasn't exactly flying, but... This girl seemed quite energetic. And eccentric. And... There was a word to better describe this girl, but Fate couldn't think of it at the moment. At the very least, she was certainly unique! The morbidity isn't what got her, as she was quite used to it by now, but it was how excited she was while talking about these things. Fate tilted her head ever so slightly, giving her a slightly questioning and confused look. It wasn't that she was shocked or disturbed, not at all. It was simply... unique. As a result, Fate's response was "I don't think they would serve sauce made out of people in an Italian restaurant... and I don't think they serve noodles at Italian restaurants, either!" However, Fate's attitude seemed to completely switch when she made the kancho pose and threatened to butt-poke her. She had heard legends of this... um, indecent act. Apparently, it was something like a game or a fad where Japanese children tried to innocently poke each other up their butts. Not just against their butts or something that would be remotely not-terrifying! Fate let out a slight yelp, before lightning carried her as she moved. Using her regular, abnormal speed, she would reflexively step forward and... well, not really attack Lucid, but disarm the situation. It was an instinctive situation, rather than something she actually thought would be a good idea. Hey, this is sexual harassment! That's a serious thing! There's no such thing as overreaction. ..Although, what Fate would try would probably come pretty close. Using that speed, she would try to grab onto Lucid's right arm, pull it lose from the other one, sweep her leg and throw her over her shoulder in one swift movement, her left foot would move to hold Lucid down, as if that throw would connect, it would knock her straight on her belly. In one swift movement, her right hand would also grab onto her extending staff, smashing it into the ground right next to Lucid's face. "E-eh? Oh, sorry." only now she would notice what she was doing. Her brain was on full autopilot when it came to dealing with any sort of outside threats. |

"Haha! I guess you don't really know Italian restaurants, do you?" It seemed like a silly joke, but the fool's earnestness was actually getting creepy. As she moved in, she began blabbing again without any regard for the atmosphere. Had she paid attention, maybe she would've been able to break her fall properly. "So- Huuuh?" Lucid was summarily manhandled and slammed down, making a sound from her mouth much like a squeaky toy being stepped on as she hit the ground. She looked at that staff that cracked the concrete, then back at Fate. "You shouldn't put your foot there. I can see up your skirt." Lucid commented idly, then shrugged. Partner would love to be in this position, that he would. She did hit on an idea, though. If the soldier needed more mental pressure to figure out something, Lucid could help. But first.... "What was it that you had to figure out in the first place? Some complicated life problem?" She asked, still staring up Fate's skirt like it was no big deal. |

Maybe it was a reflex, or maybe it was just some sort of sadism the colonel had awoken in her. But when Lucid mentioned being able to look up Fate's skirt, she would twist her arm a bit, and quite hard too. Arm-twisting was something that Fate had refined to an art. She would bring that arm only inches away from the part where her bones and muscles would be in danger from being in damage from the twisting. But then she'd suddenly let go and step away, letting out an awkward laugh as if this were all an accident as simple as bumping into someone. However, she already gave her one apology for this situation, so she didn't really really see the need to fire off another one. It's still the same situation, after all! When Lucid asked what she wanted to figure out, Fate raised her left index finger to her chin, looking upwards to the sky and letting out a rather exaggerated "Hmm~" It was something hard to explain, and she didn't feel like telling Lucid about her full life-story. Hell, she didn't even have the authority to speak about any of those things! "Well~ I forgot something important! I thought doing this would help me remember it. I kinda remembered it, somewhat, but then it all slipped away again..." Fate said, releasing a soft sigh. It was accurate enough, without breaching any protocols, so she figured this would be satisfactory enough. After saying that, though, Fate crossed her arms again and started to think. Maybe, just maybe, if she focused all of her mind on remembering... Gaah, stupid mind! Work, damn you! She had that answer so clearly only a few moments ago, no way it could've totally slipped already! Edited by Hayate, May 4 2014, 01:16 PM.

"Huummmm~" Lucid looked at her arm. Yep, that sure did hurt. Best not move, or else she'd break it. Was the blonde an S a- "Are you an S at heart?" She blurted out, a second too late as the soldier had already stepped away. Hmm. Oh well. She sat up easily, then dusted herself off. She laughed again, readjusting her bike shorts as she tilted her head. "You know, if you don't remember, why don't you just reenact it?" Lucid asked curiously. "Is it because you know you'll survive?" If that was the case, then the assassin had something else in mind to help the blonde remember what she needed. "I could set up a deathtrap for you, then! Don't worry, you might probably realize the stuff before it actually kills you~!" |

An 's'? After letting Lucid go from the grip, Fate would tilt her head. It wasn't that she was innocent or naive, no... well, whenever she got back from a mission or a training session, those urges were wiped off her mind for a few weeks, but she wasn't actually an innocent person! It was just that, well, she hadn't heard this specific terminology be used. Fate tilted her head in a slight bit of confusion. "An S?" Fate asked, shrugging for a moment as Lucid climbed back to her feet and shrugged off the throw. Well, at least she was sturdy! The last time her reflexes took over... That poor intern. However, Lucid's succeeding comment was probably right. No matter how close she was to the ground, until she actually hit it, there was no chance of her dying. That made jumping off a building kind of worthless in inspiring the primal fear she was pretty sure she needed. Gah, the most absolute, paralysing fear she had ever felt was always when she was around the Colonel, but something about him made thinking hard. While he clouded the unimportant stuff in her mind enough that they wouldn't interfere with her thought process, he clouded the important things, too! And everything in the middle. He kinda just made everything hazy bar the actual feeling of fear. Fate would remain deep in thought with her arms crossed, her expression constantly darkening and increasing in frustration. If she focused, if she focused... The feeling of knowing you forgot something important was the worst! Argh. How could you forget it, when you just knew it, and... A death trap? "Wait, what?" Fate was instantly snapped out of her concentration when she heard that. It finally started to sink into Fate's mind that this girl was maybe a little crazy, with the morbidity finally completely getting through to her because of that little half-threat. The first half of this conversation could just be written off as someone being energetic and strange, but this? "Are you sure you should be outside? Is no one looking for you...?" Fate instantly shifted the subject. It might seem like a bit of a random question, but... Well, she had met people this insane before. They belonged in either asylums or prisons. "Oh, yeah. S is for sadist! I know plenty of those, although they hide it pretty well in public." Lucid laughed, miming the cracking of a whip. "You're a really pretty lady, but your looks give an S feeling." Her idle comments had to have been very embarassing, but the fool didn't notice. She just kept on pointing things out. "Also, it kind of works. If you really want to dig that realization out of your memory, then you have to go farther than that." She tapped her own head. "Apparently, somebody that you think is crazy would help you go so far." Lucid was dumb. She wasn't deaf. "Call it my kindness~!" She held out her arms, almost as if she wanted to hug the blonde. "I don't usually do this to help people, but I'm feeling more fine than usual. Why not help you along your way to a better yourself?" It was the 'Perfecting' instinct that the artisans of L'Atelier were driven by. She might have only been their product, but she was also raised by them. And in the presence of another product, even if it was manufactured by another group.... "You can't be that scared, can you? Or was it only because you knew you wouldn't die? Oh, so maybe you'd be scared if you had no idea if you could escape! The uncertainty of a fate controlled by another brings fear that most people can't shake off~" |

A sadist? Fate, nope, totally not. That's an outrageous statement. The outrageousness of that statement was reflected on Fate's face, which was temporarily caught with a red tint because of the heinous implications the usage of this word implied. Nope, Fate didn't like hurting people (that much!), and she especially didn't get any sort of gratification from it (when they aren't ridiculously annoying)! Truly, there was (generally) no actual intent to hurt someone behind Fate's actions! The inconsiderateness of that word offended (well, it was more like embarrassed) Fate. While she wasn't the type to start flailing or screaming in denial, she did tilt her head away and let out a slight scoff of embarrassment. She did like being called pretty, though, that was sort of a band-aid to this horrible situation! "Uhh, thanks..." But her little thanks was cut off by Lucid catching onto Fate's implications. Okay, she definitely was crazy, but she seemed to be keen enough to catch Fate's mild snark. Which is kind of a problem, since Fate didn't want the crazy one to go even crazier. While she didn't doubt her ability to handle Lucid, considering how she had already easily grappled her moments ago, the young blonde would rather have a day less chaotic than one more. Fate did not respond, she considered the idea of 'dropping this subject' a bit more safe than going on about it or even denying it. Considering how eager the girl was to make a death-trap, Fate would rather not set her off completely. After all, Fate was dense and a bit of an airhead, but not dumb. Not that dumb. "I don't know, I don't think constructing a death-trap is a good idea..." But, her little brand of insanity did make her take Lucid seriously the entire way through! While someone else might be prone to thinking that Lucid is a crazy kid that was just saying the first thing to come to mind, Fate was taking every little thing she said seriously... Considering the people she had met, she saw no reason to see these silly statements as anything less than actual suggestions! Being around lunatics had started to dull Fate's sense of jokes and sarcasm. And while Lucid, maybe, had not been joking... "Err... I think this is something I have to figure out on my own, that other people can't help me with! Or something..." In a quick application of self-defence that surprisingly didn't consist throwing Lucid across town, Fate quoted a random shounen manga, hoping that those words could at least somewhat defuse the situation and stop it from becoming more awkward! After all, while Fate might maybe be a bit of a sadist, even sadists show restraint in public! Sometimes. When they aren't guided by their reflexes. |

Lucid knew she hit the mark. Bingo, somebody who was ashamed of being an S! That worked. The reluctance? Not so much. She could understand, but she didn't care. She had gone through similar experiences, and she didn't complain about it. Reaching who you were supposed to be was a super happy occasion! "Oh, everybody says it's a bad idea until they go through the crucible. I found great joy in surviving. That's near death happiness for you!" She shrugged. Well, some people got their happiness in other ways. The blonde was an S, after all. So, if she insisted on going at it alone.... "Hey, you. What's your name?" She tilted her head, a more subdued smile appearing on her face as she reached out to shake the soldier's hand. "Call me Lucid. Nice to meet you!" |

Lucid really hit right on the mark there. Fate didn't like the thought of being sadistic, she really didn't want to become one of those people that tended to their own wounds by hurting others. While at first, it just struck her with embarrassment because of how her mind couldn't help but instantly dip on the sexual variety, the more she thought about it, the more she feared becoming a regular sadist. Just going out of the way to hurt someone for the sake of hurting someone... yuck. Fate did not want to be like that. She wasn't, right? She was just being easily deluded into thinking that she was something she might not be, considering her current turmoil... right? Whatever the actual answer was, that was the one Fate stuck to. It kept her distracted from the fear of becoming like some of her seniors. Mentally, the girl whispered to herself. Trying to convince herself to not do anything that might be seen as sadistic. However, Fate did quite obviously ignore Lucid's insistence on that little deahttrap. She completely refused to answer her comment, and instead remained silent until Lucid asked for her name. "Fate..." she mumbled softly. While her voice was definitely unhampered by things like shyness or embarrassment, she did sound a little awkward talking at this point. On one hand, Fate wanted out. On the other hand, having to deal with Lucid was the perfect way to prove that she wasn't a sadist! |

"Fate, huh? What a conincidence! I was just thinking about 'gravity'." Lucid kept her hand out, not paying attention to how awkward it was her to keep on holding it for a shake. "Just so you know, I'm not unused to getting hurt." With her other hand, she tugged down the collar of her hoodie, revealing some chemical burns. "Voodoo doll, indeed I am. I wouldn't mind if you beat me up a little, if it helped you learn more about yourself." The Perfecting instinct pulsed within her again. A product who she could help, in the easiest way possible? Surely, this was 'gravity'. The attractive force that bound people together had struck again! "Come on, there's an alley. Don't be shy, Fate~" She started skipping into the darkness, waving the blonde to come over and join her. |

W-was she mocking her name? W-why did people do that? It wasn't her fault her name was maybe, just ever-so-slightly corny! Plus, it wasn't that bad... other people have way worse names. Fate crossed her arms and looked away, pouting for a moment. Making jokes about names was SO uncool... Like, Fate wasn't saying that Lucid was a dream or anything! ...Wait, that would be more of a compliment, wouldn't it? D-dammit, Fate, you're bad at the insulting-people gig! If Lucid was going to go that route, you have to think of a proper comeback! The instant Lucid mentioned how she was used to pain and said that this was okay, Fate turned back around. The marks on her neck... Scars? Burns? Fate stepped forward, using her speed to close the distance at a rather-creepy pace. ...Those were chemical in nature, weren't they? "...What happened to you?" For the first time since this conversation started, Fate thought that she might not've been born crazy. That, or she was into hurting herself with dangerous chemicals. Which was... well, still worrying. Fate's heroic urges had kicked in once again. She felt a need boil inside of her to help the girl in front of her, whether she needed it or not. Hell, whether there was even something that needed to be helped! "Did someone else burn you, or did you hurt yourself? Who hurt you?" Fate's said, her tone switching to a rather insistent one. She wasn't intending on letting Lucid move around without learning some answers! |
