“You know you don’t have to come, right Izumi?” Sophia handed the Ordinary Magician a can of chocolate malt and sat down next to him. It had been scarcely a day since she was released from the hospital, but with the Holy Valkyrian airship en-route she didn’t really have much time to waste, so the girl wanted to make sure everyone who had said they were going back with her knew what they were getting into before it was too late.

And such was the reason Sophia had asked to meet Izumi at the park today. Time was tight, so she scheduled for their meeting to be in the morning. She had the feeling that it might end up lasting longer than what she intended, but somehow wasn’t too concerned. It was a bit of a shame that they were meeting under serious circumstances though. She’d never tell him this directly, but she really did have fun during their date so long ago.

“I don’t know what we’ll run into on the way to Iceland, let alone what will happen when we get there…” She sighed and popped open her own can of juice, taking a sip. Besides that there was something else weighing on her mind, and she squeezed the pendant around her neck. “You know I’m basically a ticking time bomb right? Once the effects of this pendant wears off…”

Honestly he prefers tea over chocolate, but this really doesn't seem like a good time to start whining about it.

In fact it doesn't seem like he was even there with her at the park this early morning. His mind had been wandering around somewhere in dreamscape while his hand absent-mindedly accepted the can of chocolate drink from her with an empty little smile and a somewhat dead "Thanks,". He was quite perhaps still in denial from yesterday, out of nowhere finding out Sophia was admitted to the hospital indirectly due to a supernatural ailment that had been troubling her these past few... god, he doesn't even know how long it had been...

Afterwards finding out she would be sent to Iceland to have her 'ailment' treated? By next week, he couldn't find a word to properly describe how much he was actually against her going away. I mean, sure it's supposed to be for her to get better, but... what are the chances that it might be the last time she would be here? What if it doesn't work, and she'll just... well, using her own analogy, blow up like a time bomb before they could defuse it?

...Not a good image to have in mind in hindsight. The Ordinary Magician shook his head to get the mental imagery out of his mind, pulling his mind back to the park only to notice he's got a can of chocolate drink in his hand.

"...But I don't like chocolate..." He said, more to himself and pouting, though popping the lid and took a sip anyway.

The thick sweet taste of it was enough to get his brain working properly again. The young man belched a little at it, holding it away at arms length and staring warily at it before deciding he couldn't be bothered to throw it away when he's got something more important to be wary about. "...It's really stupid," He said with a small, weak chuckle, his hand raised to pluck on the hem of his pointed hat- oh. ...He actually forgot to bring it today, huh. "Remember back then when you collapsed at the forest and me and Alice got you back home?" ...Come to think of it, he actually did knew something is up with her since way back then, didn't he...? "I promised I'd help you with your problem anytime and anywhere,"

Curses, why didn't he bring his hat. It usually works very well to hide his dejected expression whenever he's disappointed at himself. Hopefully the little grin could fool her into thinking he's just taking it lightly. "...I can't compete with him at all, can I? I mean... he only just found out and he's willing to risk losing trusts and lives to help you..."

He wished his hair was long enough to hide his eyes at least. Tugging on it doesn't help.

A small frown creased Sophia’s features and she reached over to tap Izumi’s head lightly. “Of course I remember, how could I forget? You saw how bad it was, if it weren’t for you I’d probably be dead already.” She sighed again. Come to think of it that was the beginning of the whole mess for him, wasn’t it? The mere memory of that day caused her to grimace, but how it ended was really reassuring, especially the Ordinary Magician’s promise to her.

“Your promise means a lot to me Izumi.” The girl traced her hand down to his chin and gently raised his head so that his eyes met hers. “Don’t try to compare yourself to Seth, he’s he and you’re you. There’s no shame in that. Besides, you did come flying as soon as you heard I was hospitalized didn’t you? You were so focused on me that you didn’t even notice the window was open.” She giggled a bit and pulled Izumi’s cheek playfully in an attempt to cheer him up.

Though… the mention of Seth did remind Sophia of something, namely how he said that she was Izumi’s favourite person. Her smile faded as a blush crept onto her cheeks, and she turned away in an attempt to hide it. The awkward silence lingered for a moment before she spoke up again, but she didn’t face the Ordinary Magician. “Umm… Sorry if I’m being rude by asking this but… why are you so concerned about him…?”

"...I-I was... ...it was really uncool though..." Is what he says, though he really can't hide the embarrassed grin he has on his face even when he's turning away. Even though it was more than obvious he never did anything really worthwhile, so it was... well, he's more than happy just to hear her appreciation.

At least, until she mentioned Seth again, the gleeful expression quickly faded away from him to be replaced by one of morose uncertainty. "...Well he-" The Ordinary Magician stopped himself, reconsidering what's in his mind and took a deep breath. He then continued, as though carefully picking his words, making sure they're coming from the deep honesty inside him. "...Well he's a really big meanie..." ...Okay, that much everyone already knows about, "...But you really trust him, right? ...Everyone does. He's really violent and mean but he's also really reliable and is always there whenever people need him for anything..."

More silence. A little gulp as he decided to take a sip from the chocolate forgetting it was chocolate and retching at it. At least it was enough to keep his head together to keep talking. "W-well I mean like... I know you said not to compare myself with him, but..." The young man fidgeted slightly, a bit at loss on how to actually word whatever is floating around in his mind. Before soon though, he blurted out, "D-do you like him?!"

At first he thought he'd gone mad, staring at her somewhat horrified and really not sure if he wanted to hear her answer or not. "I-I mean like...! He... he is really cool! A-and he has that... that mysterious bad guy aura around him and stuff! And he's... he's reliable and... and smart, and... strong too... and stuff..."

Compared to the lying thieving hoarding weak and cowardly wannabe magician? He couldn't bring himself to even mention that last sentence, resorting to just hunching up and drawing a circle on the ground with his finger wishing he could just slip into the earth and never come back out ever again.

It took a moment for Sophia to process what Izumi had said, and when she did she whirled around to stare at the young man with a bit of a shocked look on her face. “I…I…I… W…Wait what brought this up?” Just because she figured out what he was saying doesn’t mean she understood it. “E…Even if he’s all those things it doesn’t mean I like him! I see him as a good reliable friend, besides, I think there’s someone else in his mind…”

Her voice trailed off, Seth was someone she could never fully understand. Their last meeting ended with her getting stabbed as he was trying to help her, which implied he did care about her somewhat, even if it’s in a… violent way. But the previous encounter ended with him completely brushing her off when another girl showed up, so that gave her the impression that said girl was someone really special to him. So in the end the hierarchy that was Seth’s relationships with other people, in Sophia’s mind at least, went something like this: That special girl > Some people she didn’t know about > Sophia > Some more people.

But more importantly, Izumi saying something like this had implications of its own. The girl may be inexperienced in such matters, but she wasn’t completely oblivious. Izumi’s favourite person, according to Seth anyways, was her. Izumi was really concerned about Seth despite clearly not liking him. Izumi was really flustered and scared after asking about her feelings about Seth. Which means…

“Izumi… could it be that you…” The girl left her sentence unfinished, half because she didn’t want to make assumptions and half because she was probably more nervous than he was right now. Instead she did her best to look the Ordinary Magician in the eye, but couldn’t really maintain eye contact and wound up looking away as the blush grew a deeper shade of red.

Well, she figured it out by herself. Could he really be any more obvious though? Aside from him always being cheerful whenever she's around, or him being envious of a certain Ryouga whom she apparently trusts very much, and now this.

"...W-well... It's not like... I mean, ...yeah..." For once the always so talkative young fellow, always so confident and charismatic, never missing a chance to show off to anyone who would bother to listen to his proud ramblings, was at loss for words. A part of him was glad to hear that she considered the certain Ryouga to be no more than a friend. That in turn left him with a certain kind of hope. A hope for something that he had always been so proudly boastful about, yet it left him in a terrible mess of emotional turmoil when encountering it right now. "S-so...? What... what say you...?"

The expectation he has in his eyes when looking at her was painful.

“W…what say I…? I… I…I… Sophia’s voice trailed off and faltered. What could she say to him? It wasn’t that she disliked him, far from it. They been through quite a bit together and even went on a date, something she would have never agreed to if she didn’t like him. But was it enough for them to become an actual couple? Ultimately the answer was…

“I…I’m sorry…” As soon as the words left her mouth her hands shot out to grab Izumi’s to keep him from running away. “D…Don’t misunderstand! I…I do l…like you Izumi… B…but… you know what we’re about to get into right? There’s no telling if I’ll come out of this as myself, or even alive…” She had said earlier that she was in a very dangerous state right now, and it was true. Sure it’s possible that everything will go smoothly and things will go back to how they were, but considering what’s at play here, chances are that’s not going to happen. “I couldn’t promise you happiness only to take it away from you later if something were to happen Izumi. I couldn’t do that to you.”

There was definitely a sense of disconnection from her first few words. It was like it came from another world, and he couldn't quite... hear, what she's saying. "...Eh...?" The Ordinary Magician said blankly, staring at her and being a bit too stunned to really even think of walking away. Of course, just seconds later, the pieces all snapped into place bringing him back to reality, starting with "...STUPID, DON'T SAY THAT!!!"

...That's also probably the first time he's actually called her something, well, not nice. For a good reason, not only was he angry, but you could tell how much fear he's actually trying to suppress behind the hard look in his eyes and the trembling hand clenching tightly on her own. "Don't give up so quickly! You've got a lot of people waiting for you to come back!"

He is known to be a coward, but he sure is quite optimistic. Mainly because the alternative would be too terrifying for him to really think about, and... he doesn't want to dwell on that thought, ever. "P-please, even if you..." He paused and gulped, letting go of her hand and stepped back, though keeping his hard gaze on her. "...It's not just me, the others would be sad too if you're gone..." For a moment he paused, standing there as his eyes drifted to the ground. Then as though startled by something, the Ordinary Magician hastily wiped his eyes on his sleeve before raising a fist and a big grin. "S-so...! C-cheer up, okay! Everything will be alright!"

Sophia turned bright red at Izumi’s words, not because he called her stupid, but because she had never seen him angry at her before so she was worried that she had offended him somehow. “D…don’t be silly! Of course I intend on coming back!” His grip on her hand was starting to hurt a bit, but given the circumstances that was hardly important and she squeezed back as reassuringly as she could.

“I have a life here, friends, and a home, there’s no way I’m going to give that up so easily.” The girl smiled gently at him as he let go of her hand. “Thank you for understanding Izumi, and for cheering me up. Honestly I had been pretty nervous you know? Talking to you really helped.”

She fell silent and looked as if she was pondering something. "U…Umm… I…I know this is sudden… but… Do you… want to spend the rest of the day together or something…?” It was really bold of her to suddenly ask something like that, but despite her flustered look and earnest eyes there was a deeper reason behind her doing so. Should the worst happen… She wanted to at least give him some happy memories to look back on.

A very short look of surprise, followed by a meek, big grin in a mild attempt to hide the happy embarrassment on his face. "...E-heheh, you know I can't say no to that..."

Not that there is much he could really say anyway. From here on out it's going to be a trial for Sophia Antistita, with an outcome that is still fogged by uncertainty of the future. It really doesn't matter whether the future is bleak or full of hope, because for all the Ordinary Magician cared today will hopefully stick around as one of his happy memories, spending his time with her.

Hopefully.

Sophia smiled happily as Izumi accepted her offer. Tomorrow may be a day of sorrows, and the weeks thereafter might be filled with hardships, but today would be a happy day where she gets to spend time with a boy that she liked. “Great! I picked the amusement park last time, so you get to pick where we go this time!” The girl squeezed his hand tightly. As much as this day was for him, it was for her as well.

She knew life can be short, having ended several herself, but never before did she worry so much about her own. Sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest difference...
