Ah spring, isn't it nice to go back to school for the first time in the snowless day after months long of clammy cold that made everyone so grumbly and annoyed? Especially for a certain Supernatural Studies class where the teacher, as should be expected by everyone taking the class right now, likes to bring the class outside for his lessons instead of staying in the classroom.

And sure enough, today was no different at all. Upon entering the classroom where, mostly newer, students would probably expect to find the teacher, they would instead find the teacher to be absent, replaced by a note on the blackboard scribbled with blue chalk because he ran out of white ones...

Notice

Look out the window,

Shun

Surprisingly brief. And apparently this time their class wouldn't be postponed to after school, as would be apparent when arriving students would look out the window, they would find Shun the Dragon Youkai teacher in his green Chinese garb and beret himself was at the school ground, waving up with a grin at anyone looking down.

Natsumi waved back.

And maybe that was kind of a stupid thing to do? Like, too enthusiastic for a class where sometimes, they were sent on weird endeavors out of the classroom that probably weren't worth the grade?

She didn't mind much, actually. She was still riding the, um, freshman high. Everything was still new and exciting.

Throwing open the window, she caught a gust of wind to the face almost immediately. That hardly dampened her spirit, although it became apparent to her a few moments afterwards that the best way to get to the school grounds was not, in fact, through the window. She eased it shut again, and made her way out of the classroom.

A few minutes later, she was making her way towards Shun, breathing only a little heavier than usual from the walk down.

"Good day, sensei." Natsumi fidgeted slightly as her usual reserve returned to her. "What, um, are we doing today?"

Second to enter the classroom would be Eva, who was once again taking the class in Sophia’s stead since the latter was away on personal business. She wasn’t the least surprised to see Shun missing, seeing how the dragon youkai isn’t exactly known for being responsible, but the sight of a note left on the chalkboard changed her mind.

So this was to be another outdoor class huh? The gynoid made her way to the window next to her classmate, wondering just what Shun had planned for them this time, and looked outside to see… well, nothing out of the ordinary. It was just the teacher dressed in his usual wear, not even anything that looked supernatural.

Eva briefly wondered if there was more than meets the eye but came up with nothing. Instead she decided that it was best to just to ask him and to… jump out the window. Unlike Natsumi the gynoid found the open window to be the perfect way to get to the school grounds, but this was the third floor for crying out loud… She didn’t seem to care about that at all though, and merely landed a short distance away from Shun with a small thump. “Good day to you Shun-sensei. What will be the subject of today’s lesson?”

Turning misery into meaningfulness!
Shirena was third to walk into the classroom, and look at the blackboard. He sighed softly, and nodded to himself, looking out the window, and to no surprise, instead, looking up. "Um....what am I supposed to b-OH!" He looked down, and finally saw something, his teacher, and waved, with a usual apology for not noticing him. He jumped down, using softer explosions to soften the landing a tad.

"Good morning, sensei." He said. "Outdoor class today?" He asked. It was fairly obvious, but Shirena felt it was a sort of thing he felt obligated to ask. Maybe it just kinda....drew him to an obvious answer. He didn't recognize the other two stu-...wait, isn't that the one girl from Tokyo? He glanced over Eva's body, and, despite knowing about her, decided it was probably best not to note it. He took a look back at Shun, with a soft yawn.

Ethan tended to be suspicious of everything. That mysterious bowl of soup, suspicious. The strange man walking strangely, suspicious. The shady looking letters of the alphabet (like the letter z), suspicious.

So, for a teacher to be writing such a note in such an apparent rush raised several alarms in his head. After all, this could just be an elaborate trick so that everyone goes outside while the goal was supposed to be inside the class. SUSPICIOUS!

The boy quickly got out a whiteboard and wrote a few words on it before holding it up out the window:

[Should we be outside?]

...Wait, wait wait WAIT!!! "No, get away from the window that's dangerous- abuu!" In a panicked attempt to run towards them he tripped and fell flat face first on the ground.

They already jumped.

And landed quite safely at that.

...Somewhat disgruntled at making a complete fool out of himself at the same time getting up and wiping the dirt off his face, "...Alright, I know you guys are all proud of your superpowers and want to show them off at all times, and I guess this is a very efficient way in getting down to class..." He said with a huff of annoyance, crossing his arms and staring at both Eva and Shirena in stern disapproval. "I do NOT approve of anyone purposely performing dangerous tricks that could get you into some serious hurting! What if your powers failed and you broke your legs or something?!"

In the meantime, back in the classroom, someone else had a completely different idea of what's appropriate and what's not.

"JUST GO OUTSIDE ALREADY!!!"

Ethan would no sooner than later after showing off his writing on the board to those down below (even though it was clearly actually a blackboard that's drilled and screwed onto the wall with no whiteboards around whatsoever) feel a strong kick to his butt that would throw him off the floor and out the window. Whether he gets saved or not, the grumpy Seth Ryouga doesn't care because he's not one to really sympathize with the others lack of durability compared to his own, and would just poke his head out the window afterwards and yell out "What's the point of doors if you guys are just going to use the windows?! Idiots!"

...Not sure if he should be one to say that, since he kind of walked out of the room to meet up with the rest of the class by kicking the door open anyway.

At least one student who is probably a new one would be spared from any kind of yelling today. Thanks for being the only sane one around. "Ah- yeah, we're doing our class outside, um," The Dragon Youkai pondered a bit, noticing the new face out of the usual roster of students and said "...You look new, go ahead and introduce yourself," He said with a dismissive wave of his hand and continued with a grin, clapping his hands together. "Now, which one of you are familiar with the story The Honest Woodman?"

Seth the grumpy and angry looking fellow arrived soon enough.

... Was he talking to her?

Natsumi could feel the blood rising in her cheeks as embarrassment began to sink in.

Sure, she didn't stand out in the class - look at all her classmates that could just jump out a window like it was nothing - but it wasn't like she had just turned up today. Like, wouldn't it be pretty lame to start attending a class in the middle of the school year?

She just liked to take the backseat most times and not make a fuss. Maybe that didn't lend itself to being recognized.

"I'm Natsumi," she mumbled, but she forced herself to enunciate. "Natsumi Ito." Not related to that Spike guy, she added silently in her head. The kanji was completely different.

As for the story question, the only thing she could remember about it other than the obvious moral of honesty was that it involved a lake. That didn't seem like quite enough to be a valid response.

Caught up in her thinking, Natsumi failed to notice Ethan flying out the window.

“Even if I were to lose power mid fall I would not be damaged from the impact.” Eva tilted her head as Shun scolded her, as if she didn’t understand why he was angry. “So there is no cause for concern.” Unexpectedly she then turned to Shirena. “The same cannot be said for you however. I detect that you are 100% human flesh and blood, so I would be more cautious in the future.”

A sudden shout from the class room caught her attention and Eva looked up to see Ethan flying out the window. Seeing that this was not a voluntary act like with Shirena and herself, the gynoid quickly calculated his landing position and caught him in her arms. “You are Script Jones, are you not?” She nonchalantly set the boy back on his feet. “Sophia Antistita asked me to ensure your safety while she is away.” Despite saying that she seemed to take up a more passive approach than Sophia did and instead returned her attention to the class at hand.

“The Honest Woodcutter, also called ‘Mercury and the Woodman’ or ‘The Golden Axe’, is the story of how…” Eva started her explanation but stopped when she remembered that Shun said he didn’t allow her ability to look up anything on the go. Seeing how that’s exactly what she did… “…That is a story unfamiliar to me.” Which was technically a lie… until she deleted everything she found on the subject from her memory.

Lella was in class, but he had almost missed it by a few seconds. He skidded in with a halt and looked around. There was what appeared to be a comotion near the window which could mean quite a few things. It wasn't that he had missed the whole 'jump out the window ' thing, oh no. Anyone in the hallway could hear that little debate. It was when people started jumping out the window that he scratched his head.

He had seen some pretty strange things in his life but this was a turn for something else. People jumping out the window just to prove what they could do? That wasn't what he signed up for. Instead he chose the easy method of just exhausting himself by running all the way, back again, outside.

The photomancer had made it outside just in time to see Ethan fly out the window. Rubbing his forehead he kind of had to hold back the laughter that was building in him. That kid was wild and always seemed to be on something. Lella wondered if that would be him after a few more years here. He had that wild streak of jumping into things without really thinking it through too. Shaking his head he sort of just mingled into the rest of the class.

Today was going to be a day where he was actually quiet and didn't stand out. Though standing out was difficult so far as someone already jumped out a window. He had just recovered from a confrontation with a crazy nomad forest man and wasn't really up to thinking just yet. So when the class was asked about The Honest Woodsman he gave up. He put his hands in his pockets as they kind of wanted to shoot up in the air and have him shout that he had no idea but would love to hear it. It was true, he loved stories in this class. Instead he waited for someone else to answer while his brain woke up.

Shirena shrunk under the yelling of their teacher, and nodded slightly, before noticing... well, there really was a new face in the small crowd. "Nice to meet you, Natsumi." He said, with a calming smile. Her last name reminded him of Spike, somewhat. He'd certainly have to ask if they were related. "Welcome!" He said cheerfully.

The Honest Woodman? He had read it before in a book he sto- ahem, borrowed from the ruined library, which had become his main source of interesting reading material. "I have, though it was a while since I've read about it, so I may be a bit rusty." He said, before blushing in embarrassment. "So... sorry if I'm a bit wrong on some details."

"...Well then," The Dragon Youkai blinked as every one of them admitted to either haven't read it or doesn't know it very well. Admittedly he had been relying Eva to give a summary about the book considering her access to a vast library of knowledge known as the internet before remembering he told her not to actually use it in class. ...A bit of an inconvenience for him in hindsight, even more so when the others doesn't know it as well, but never mind that. "Alright, I guess I'll actually go ahead and tell the story, should I?"

He gave a cough, preparing for a long story telling time.

Once upon a time, there was a woodcutter who lived in a forest. He lived in an old, small wooden house, made from the logs he cut down himself. It wasn't luxurious, but he lived there very comfortably.

Every morning he would go out to the forest, bringing his trusty old axe with him. It was old and worn down, the wooden handle was dry and slightly cracked, the iron head had a little chip on the edge. It was the axe that the woodcutter had been using for as long as he could remember. With it, he would cut down trees into logs and would then sell the logs as firewood or construction materials for the townsfolk living far away from the forest. He would work hard from day to night, stopping only for a short moment for lunch and a little break. Though he never stopped for long, for he is eager to get back to work. The more wood he could cut, the more he could sell, and the better his life would be.

One day when he was working, he was feeling quite thirsty. So he thought he could drink some water from the nearby river. On the way to the river however, he was careless and tripped on the root of a tree. With a yelp of surprise the woodman tripped and stumbled, and his axe slipped out of his hand and fell into the river. He was horrified about it, and went quickly to the edge of the river to look for his axe. But the river was deep, and the water was moving so fast it would be dangerous to jump in. As much as he's hoping against it, his axe is probably lost for good. Which is a disaster for him, how would be cut woods? That was his only axe, how would he be able to sell woods and sustain himself from now on?!

It was then something incredible happened. From the river arose a wise looking old man with long white beard, clad in a clean and regal looking Chinese garb. The old man introduced himself to the surprised woodman as the mountain god. An axe hit him on the head when he was down there in the river, and the mountain god wanted to see who is the owner of it. The woodman was excited, hoping he would be reunited with his old axe again.

The mountain god then pulled out an axe made entirely out of steel. It was glimmering in the sunlight, it's handle and head free of stain. The axe was certainly of very quality, so much the woodman was struck in awe at the sight of the axe. The woodman thought that whoever owns this axe would definitely be able to cut a lot of wood with little effort or at all.

But it was not his axe. As useful as he thought it would be, he couldn't take something that is not his. Perhaps it belonged to someone else instead who also dropped their axe. The woodman declined, saying it doesn't belong to him. The mountain god was surprised at his refusal, went back into the river, then came back out with a different axe.

This time, it was a silver axe. A beautiful looking axe adorned with beautiful decorations along the handle. It was so beautiful the woodman's mouth fell open as he stared at the axe in disbelief. He thought, whoever owns this axe must be very rich. With this silver axe he would be able to move to the town and support himself his whole life and never have to cut wood for a living again.

But it was also not his axe. As much as he wanted to have the axe, he couldn't take something that is not his. Once again the woodman, hesitantly, denied the mountain god, saying the silver axe was not his axe. The mountain god was yet again surprised at his refusal, then immediately went back into the river to take yet another axe.

It was a brilliant golden axe with expensive precious stones and gems embedded into it. The edge was so sharp it could cut down trees in one swing. Let alone the fact that it is clearly extremely valuable, the woodman could not take his eyes away from it, as though hypnotized by the golden axe. He thought, with this axe, not only would he be able to move to the city and never have to live cutting trees ever again, he could get married and have children with the money he could get by selling the axe, even buy a house much, much larger than the largest house in town. The woodman was very tempted to take the axe, figuring that nothing wrong could come if the mountain god was offering it to him in the first place.

But he couldn't. It was not his axe, and thus he shouldn't take it. It was hard to fight the temptation, but the woodman stood strong, pushing the golden axe back to the mountain god with all his bravado, claiming that it is not his axe. He then began describing his axe, which was an old axe with worn down wooden handle, a rusted head with chipped edge. It was an old axe that he had used since the first time he could remember, cutting trees to make logs and woods to sell for his livelihood. There is no other axe that would be his axe, but the old, rusted, worn down axe of his.

The old mountain god was very surprised as his statement, then laughed out heartily. The mountain god then explained, that the three valuable axes belonged to him. He only brought them out because he wanted to test the woodman's honesty, and he was pleasantly surprised to find out that the woodman does have a truly honest heart. In the end as a reward, the mountain god gave back the woodman his old axe, as well as all three of the valuable axes. The woodman was very happy about it, and thus-

"...He lived happily ever after, the end," The Dragon Youkai finished his story with a heavy breath of relief, never crossing his mind that telling a story would be such a pain in the butt. "You might think the story's a little different from somewhere else, the Greek had Hermes instead of the mountain god, and then there's the liar following the woodman. Who then you should probably know what happened to him,"

...Alright, so he's told the story. What does that have to do with the lesson for today?

All the time while Shun was telling the story, Natsumi imagined him as each of the characters.

It was pretty easy to place him in the role of the woodsman, especially when the woodsman yelped and tripped. She stifled a smile.

And, come to think of it, he was wearing much the same clothes as the mountain god in the story... Chinese garb, at least. She didn't know exactly what characterized them as regal, and Shun's were a bit dirty from the fall. But it still counted, right?

"The liar, um, got his head cut off?" she ventured. Well, if she was already making half-baked assertions about stories she didn't half-remember, she might as well keep going. "Are you going to be taking us to see a mountain god?"

Was he going to be the mountain god?

So moral of the story is: be honest and you’ll be rewarded, and, if Natsumi is correct, lie and you’ll punished, brutally. It seems a bit black and white though, even for Eva. But that wasn’t the point of today’s lesson, was it? Nonetheless she logged the story, the way Shun told it, into her databanks. In hindsight it was a bit redundant considering how she had just deleted a dozen versions of the story, but at least this time she wasn’t “cheating”.

“An interesting story Shun-sensei, but how does it relate to today’s lesson?” He did bring them to go see a Kappa last time, so it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see him with some mountain god. Then again he was a dragon youkai from ancient China, so it’s also possible that he IS a mountain god, at least that’s how the villagers of old would see him.

Ethan was still stunned after being suddenly thrown from the window. The fact that he was rescued by Eva didn't actually make its way to his head yet. At the moment, he was still in "brace for impact" mode.

'HELP! HELP! HELP! Step 1: Grab something. Step 2: Hit something. Step 3: Relax body. Step 4: Bend knees. Step 5: Land on your feet. Step 6: Fall to the side. Step 7: Guard head. Step 8: Summon a flying demon to help you. HELP! HELP! HELP! Step 1...Step 2....Step 3...Step 4...Step 5...Step 6...Step 7...Step 8... HELP! HELP! HELP! Step 1...Step 2....Step 3...Step 4...Step 5...Step 6...Step 7...Step 8...

'...Wait, am I alive?'

The boy finally snapped out of his panic attack and found himself safely on the ground. He quickly looked around and reviewed what his ears had picked up when he was "preoccupied" with his worries.

'Um...ok... rescued by Eva (need to thank Sophie later). And now the teacher told us the classic gold and silver axe story. So then I guess the first business to address is...'

The boy turned to Eva and handed her a quickly prepared note.

[Thank you for saving me. Do you have any protection against extremely sharp axes?]

"Honestly I have nothing to teach you guys today,"

...You have got to be kidding me, really? What the heck is a teacher if he doesn't have anything to teach their students?! ...Though come to think of it at the very least this time he didn't actually force the kids to trudge through forest and snow and mountains or wake up so late in the middle of the night just to get to a tiny little lesson plan. "But!" He said in a bit of a dramatic reveal with a raised finger and an eager grin. "We do have a special request from the mountain god himself, and it's not from me~"

Huh. Wouldn't that be an honor, though he's actually talking about the mountain god like he's an old friend or something. Which is odd since the Dragon Youkai hardly looked older than two decades old. Regardless, he would then lead however many students who bothered to come to the big lake of the school, the one on school ground with a gazebo next to it that students passing through the school ground to go to class early in the morning or going back home after school would always see but more often than not take for granted.

Once they're there, Shun stopped at the lakeside, bending down to pick a particularly sizable rock. "Right, wait a bit..." He then threw the rock into the lake, making quite a splash.

And then he waited.

...Wait is that really how he just tried to call the mountain god...?
