It was dark; the cold green glow of his wristwatch read 1 o’clock. He stood in the street, outside the border of police caution tape with a police toyota nearby, across the street two officers were watching the site on the graveyard shift. Due to the discrepancy in rank they wouldn’t really interfere in what was about to occur.

The place had been indicated in his messenger’s charges. It was one of the less prosperous areas of Hyakuji, pot hills dotted the road and a few weeds stuck out defiantly between the cracks of the uneven sidewalk. He ducked under the yellow caution tape, lighting a thin cigarette as he looked at the scene of the first murder.

Killed the old bum outside, no one even saw a thing The flat brick wall had a number of small flags placed next to it, each one meticulously numbered and recorded, the place where the body was found, a space five feet to the side where a chunk of skull had been picked up, near his foot was the spot where they had found the loose cement brick, the murder weapon in this spot. When he had come up on the corpse the brick wall had been more pink than anything. Whoever was doing this wasn’t an assassin, there was no guile in this, a loose brick and a strong arm spraying pink all over the walls. The cleaners had gotten rid of most of the mess though.

He looked back, half expecting someone to show up, half expecting to see the murder there in front of him. He shivered in his black jacket and stroked the few stray whiskers on his face. He stamped his boots, the gleam of his belt buckle reflecting off the moon.

When he came it would be simple, he would introduce himself as a member of the investigation, though not his rank and tell them that nothing here would be recorded, but that was more for his own sake then their’s. He would show them this first site, where the assailant had wounded a vagrant using a brick and then proceed to slam his head into the pavement until a third of the victim’s skull was shattered and removed from his skull. Apparently the victim had been tossed against the wall after that. Any who could handle that could handle the murder sites on the inside of the complex and continue helping with the investigation. He would answer any questions about motive, technique, evidence and other signs at the crime scene. he was familiar with it, he was the lead investigator after all.

I hope to god something happens here

An astute observer would notice a shifting shadow dancing in the darkness of the street, flitting between objects like a bird dashing between tree branches.

In an almost theatrical unveil a silhouette appeared from behind the parked Toyota. The figure was looked human in form, two legs, two arms, a head. But something was off about it, just a little bit too slender and tall.

Just enough for something to be wrong.

however this is what the man wanted to look like. The aesthetic was what he decided to go with today, tall, dark, and unsettling, much like the case of the crime.

The figure was adorned in a long flaring coat which hid much of his body's shape. The coat's collar was pulled around his face, leaving only a mess of black hair pouring over the side, revealing a pair a black beady eyes.

"I'm here to help"
A voice spoke from the figure.

Goddamnit, only one person?! The shadows did him well and hid his disappointment. This would have to do though, an oddly thin man and a desperate investigator.

“Good, we need all the help we can get” He turned and indicated the shadow should follow him to the first murder site; the brick wall. As described before the only things marking the murder site were the flags indicating points of interest and where evidence had been.

“This is where the first murder was, or at least where we think the first murder was. The victim was a vagrant known as Hideki, a former real estate agent. The weapon we believe” he knocked on the wall of red brick. “Was a brick from the very same wall. He took it from over there we believe, on the corner of the building over there by the alley. The mortar showed no sign of age. The first blow was to the side of the head and the back of the victim’s skull was smashed against the wall until it fractured. The face was then mutilated using the brick” he looked towards the shadow man, trying to gauge his reaction. He was stating the brutality in a matter of fact fashion, as he would on any other case, but he was unsure how this student, if the person was a student, would react.

He walked towards the taped off entrance of the apartment block. “He then dropped the brick here and kept moving into the apartment if our timeline is right” He turned towards his guest. “Anything stand out to you yet” he asked in a flat but slightly interested tone.

The figure glided over to the wall, running it's long gloved fingers across the surface. It hummed to itself as it felt the surface. "Are you sure it was a brick?" It asked, leaning towards the mortar and sniffing intensely.

"Do you have the brick itself? Why would the murderer use the brick." It had doubts that the weapon was a brick. But that was only a start. "Do we have a motive. Do you have any forensics? Where are the experts?" The creature asked with increasing curiosity, moving towards the detective with a jerky twitch.

The figure stopped without listening for the answers. It thrust it's hand into the wall it's hand briefly convulsing in a sickening motion before ripping a brick out of the mortar, chunks of the substance coming off with the brick. "The question is" The figure mused "If it pulled a brick off the wall, how did it come off so cleanly?"
