"Huh, looks like these hinges need some lubrication again," Jen mused as she pushed open the doors to one of the indoor training rooms in the Athletic Field, and as the doors opened the purple-haired girl made out an audible creaking of the hinges. "This ought to take care of it," being her usual crazy-prepared self the girl retrieved a small can of WD-40 from her bag and sprayed a bit of the lubricant on the hinges, swinging the doors back and forth and finding herself satisfied by their silence. The lights flickered to life as Jen stepped in, dressed in a blue track jacket with white accents and a pair of blue gym shorts with white striped highlights, and after some initial stretching exercises to warm herself up the purple-haired girl proceeded to do her usual martial arts practice routine, starting with spending several minutes of practicing various punches and kicks on the sandbag, followed by another several minutes of striking a wooden dummy. "I could sure use a sparring partner though," Jen thought as her blows rained down upon the "arms" and "legs" of the Wing Chun practice dummy from multiple angles. After all, the old saying goes, "Wooden boards don't hit back", and at this point what she was doing felt more like merely a fitness routine rather than helping to keep her combat skills sharpened. But in the meantime, she would continue to practice, the gym echoing with the sounds made by her strikes against the hard wood surface of the dummy. |

Turning misery into meaningfulness!
|
A yawn was heard, as a boy with silver hair and eyes of red (though half-closed) walked into the room, with a small smile. Seemed like he had just woken up for a quick morning session of punching...punching bags. He was still a bit tired, hoping that the activities and pushing of physical bounderies, more or less, would wake him up. He moved the door slightly out of the way, surprised that it stopped creaking. "Huh. They fixed that already?" He said to himself, before a smile came up upon his lips. "Cool." He said, before walking in, noting the girl already doing her own assortment of training. Shirena didn't recognize her, but she did seem somewhat skilled, probably more than himself. Looking at her, he gave a small, cheerful wave. "Hiya." he said, before sitting down, with a small can of soda. "Tell me when you're done. Seems like they removed the other punching bags in the room for now." He said, sitting there. |

"No need. I'm looking at one right now." A sardonic, annoyed voice cut through the air. Kell appeared, crossing her arms as she gave the boy a sour look. It was almost like she was hanging around just so she'd have something to complain about at this point. She stomped over to the side, leaned against the wall and sighed in resignation. "Jen, you have something in mind? Or is it just hittin' the dummy from now to the end of the day?" She called out to the purple haired girl. Her tone was a lot friendlier than when she addressed Shirena, undoubtedly. It seemed like she had some enmity for him after all. "Sparring ain't a one man job, y'know." Given her roughness, she wasn't liable to be called a lady any time soon. |

"I was just about done here, gonna catch a breather for a couple minutes before continuing," Jen replied to the boy with silver hair and red eyes - whom she resisted the temptation to simply nickname as "Chizu's little brother" - now she was certain she hadn't seen him around before though. "Though if you prefer, I could always use a sparring partner instead of simply hitting sandbags and dummies - it's not like you can learn much hitting something that don't strike back; I mean, ever watched Enter The Dragon? That was where Bruce Lee made that famous 'wooden boards don't hit back' quote," the purple-haired girl continued, before her attention was diverted to yet another girl, a familiar face, but not exactly one she'd consider a friend - with a hair color a shade lighter than her own, and an acidic tongue. "Heya Kell, just doing my workout routine... need to stay in shape, and keep my combat skills sharp," the purple-haired girl remarked as she shadow boxed for a few seconds, bobbing and weaving before throwing a rapid series of punches at the air, punctuating each blow with a hissing noise. "All right, so who wants to take a shot at me?" Jen asked as she looked at Kell, then at the stranger. "And seeing how I haven't seen you around these parts before, I suppose a bit of self-introductions might be in order," the purple-haired girl remarked. "Name's Chase, Jennifer Chase," Jen decided to get the ball rolling by making her name known to the boy. "Most people who know me simply call me Jen though; the sharp-tongued one over there, that's Kell, we had some adventures together - but that would be another tale for another time," the purple-haired girl concluded, before waiting for the boy to introduce himself, and perhaps, for Kell to formally introduce herself as well. |

He smiled slightly at the girls response, with a nod. "Thank you." He said, with a happy tone. Of course, he hadn't kept up with his training, though he had been through more...practical battles in the recent days. That certainly made up for the lack of practice...doesn't mean he should slack just yet! "I've seen that movie before...though it was a long time ago, so I don't remember too well. Good movie, though." He said, in response to the quote from the aforementioned movie. "And the line makes plenty of sense. Punching a punching bag is one thing, but to practically fight, you need to learn to move in tune with your opponent, predict their attacks, and move in to strike efficiently!" He said with enthusiasm, and a sense of understanding. And then a recognizable voice appeared, reaching his ears, he felt a wave of small nostalgia wave over him. Back when he was....far too shy. He looked at the new arrival, who had taken on a harsh tone. He replied sarcastically, "Nice to see you, too." He said, with a joking smile, and a soft sigh. He noted her friendlier tone with the girl that had been here, they were probably friends, or at least, tolerant of each other. Of course, the introductions proved him correct, and he nodded. "Shirena Nikushima, first year." He said. "Doubt Kell remembers me, but I am fairly sure we've met in the past." He said with a small nod. "As for taking a shot at a quick fight, I'll take you up on that offer." He said, with a grin. "I'll not use my powers though. I don't want to blow a hole in the wall or anything." He said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously, with a more sheepish grin before standing up and walking onto the large mat that Jen stood on, and a majority of the equipment sat/was hung over. "You got any powers?" He asked, before taking on a small, sloppy, but seemingly defensive stance. |

"Would being a living Wikipedia and MacGyver Expy count as a power?" Jen wondered as the boy who introduced himself as Shirena asked her what her powers were, and promising not to use his powers during their spar so as to not blow a hole in the wall. "Otherwise, no... I don't really have anything in the way of impressive attack powers like you do," the purple-haired girl mused. ![]() "So, before we get started, any other conditions you might want to put forth? Like say, limiting ourselves to stand up strikes only? Or perhaps would you prefer grappling with no punch-kick allowed?" Jen asked as she unzipped her track jacket and slipped it off, revealing a blue sports bra. Taking out a fuzzy hair tie from the pocket of her shorts, the purple-haired girl tied up her hair in a high ponytail, while waiting for Shirena's response. |

He shook his head. "I think I'm good, though I'd prefer not using weapons or anything...enhancing of the sorta. Last time I went up against a sword, I was cut down pretty quickly." He said, with a chuckle. He seemed to take the more revealing outfit underneath with little more than a blush, and a glance away. "Anyway..." "I don't think I have anything more to put down, rules-wise." He said, removing his hoodie to reveal a somewhat built body, despite being under a red t-shirt, though still seemingly a tad weak in stature. Still, it certainly looked like he could take a few punches. "How about you?" He said, listening intently. |

"Yes. It's not like you're wearing gym clothes and working up a sweat or anything." Her tone was sarcastic, but she was smiling in a surprisingly friendly way. They might not have been friends, but Kell liked Jen. The same couldn't be said of the white haired boy, though. "Let's be real, Shirena. I remember what you did. You think I'd hate you on sight if I didn't?" Kell asked dryly, her smile replaced with a look of mildly annoyed indifference. "I know you're a good person. You still mean jack shit to me in the end." And it wasn't just because John liked him, although it was a major factor. She just had it in for the poor guy. She gave him another withering glare, then yawned when they decided to have a spar. She'd just watch them for now. Might as well watch Shirena get embarassed, right? That was the danger of fighting Jen. Kell didn't know the limits of that adaptive ability, but she generally took it to mean that each move would work only once barring some inventive setups. Hell, she'd probably have to switch between all sorts of approaches just to try and delay Jen from analyzing her style fully. Unfortunately for Shirena, he looked like he wanted to try and take Jen barehanded. What a guffaw, really. He wouldn't learn anything by being beaten so quickly. "No weapons, of course, that's because bokkens can be rather indiscriminating compared to one's fists and feet," Jen replied, and seeing how there were no other special conditions that the boy would like to put forth in their spar, decided that now was as good a time as any to begin. "Alright, are you ready to Tango then? Let's make this a best out of three shall we? Score one whenever one of us either lands on our back on the mat, or taps out to a submission maneuver," the girl remarked as she removed her shoes and socks and stepped over to the center of the room covered with padded blue mats and assumed a fighting stance, a classic kickboxing stance with her fists raised, and her body weight resting on her right foot. While waiting for Shirena to approach, Jen would shift her stance constantly, going from weight on right foot to weight on left foot and back - given her knowledge of martial arts, she knew that an important part of a good defense is being able to read an opponent's moves, predicting where their next attack may come from following subtle movements of their bodies, such as the angle of their gaze, position of the head and limbs, and on which foot they are resting their body weight. And by constantly shifting her stance the girl intended to keep Shirena guessing where her offense might come from, and what move she might use. |

He nodded. "Best out of three is juuuust fine." He said, with a cheerful smile, understanding the stipulation she laid down with a clear nod, keeping an eye on her movements for a time. She seemed to have a more...eccentric stance. Not a bad one, but much more unpredictable than anything he's seen in any sort of kung fu movie. Quickly he began taking on his own, more offensive stance, clearly much cleaner, and more...refined than his defensive one. Perhaps he has had more training with the latter? None the less, Shirena slowly began moving closer, his eyes locking to hers, with a smile, always with a smile. He didn't seem scared, or worried, or even a bit nervous. He was having fun, it was clear upon his features. He moved just a mere step closer, and quickly came a flurry of kicks out of nowhere, with a surprising amount of force. The kid didn't have experience, but had quite a bit of skill. |

Ah. So that was how things would go, huh? Kell didn't have much of a chance to see Jen fight, previously. Kickboxing was not her thing, but this was already something that she got concerned about. In a strict no-power match, Kell didn't have the option of blocking any right kicks Jen did. Her weak left arm would get pushed aside easily, after all. That, and she couldn't really read the purple haired fighter. It was a stupid idea for anybody who wasn't incredibly skilled in martial arts, and Kell was nowhere near that level. Essentially, she was stuck jumping at any ghosts that would come her way. She could handle the mental strain, but it essentially meant she'd be dancing to Jen's rhythm. Another point against her, it seemed. The only bright side was that her left arm was essentially impossible to grapple. It was harder than steel, and the elbow joint couldn't be damaged by Jen, unless she had some weakpoint affecting power or something. As for her wooden left shoulder... Well, she wasn't sure if it actually conformed to human anatomy. She knew that it had a normal range of movement, but maybe it wasn't a ball joint any more. Huh. Maybe if she let Jen slap on a kimura.... That thought was interrupted, though. Shirena was kicking. A lot. Oh dear god, he really was trying to lose, wasn't he? "Go ahead and phone every attack you would make, why don't you?" She muttered. Of course, Cariot was much more enthusiastic than her. Even though only Kell and Jen could hear her, she insisted on cheering for both sides. "Goooo Jen! Goooo Shirena! Have a good fight!" The pink blob smiled and waved her overly long sleeves about. |

"Interesting..." Jen thought as Shirena went on the offensive, just as she hoped he would. If there was one thing about the purple-haired girl, it was her preference for defensive strategies, allowing her opponents to attack first so that she may study their moves for any possible openings, countering them by punishing them for their mistakes. It was pretty clear at this point that Shirena was putting in a lot of force behind those kicks as they came in hard and fast - presumably self-taught, as from the get-go his offensive reminded Jen of the rapid kicks used by Tae Kwon Do practicioners, but with far less polish compared to a formally-trained TKD master. Jen jumped back as Shirena launched his first kick, swiftly backpedalling to keep herself just out of kicking distance, before raising an arm to catch the boy's next kick in mid-swing by seizing his ankle, before attempting a takedown by performing a ground sweep with her right leg, looking to trip him up and cause him to land on his back should the move succeed. |

Shirena gasped as she caught his leg, but kept his smile slightly, he was still having fun, before he glanced down, noting her more defensive state. Of course, it seemed like this was gonna be a tough one. But that made it all the more fun, all the more so he could keep improving! Noticing the sweep coming, he took the opportunity with stride, letting her sweep him, but using the force of his own power, along with the sweep, to attempt to make a swift roundhouse kick to the head. If he were to fail, he'd fall flat on the ground, but if he succeeded in his attack, he'd have the same amount of force as the last two attacks. WHile the force wouldn't make someones head cave in or anything extreme, it would be powerful enough to at the least, daze, at most, take her down. |

"Oh god damn it." Kell facepalmed. Was he really trying that? She supposed that he didn't exactly understand who he was dealing with. If he did, he wouldn't have made such a silly mistake. "Whoooa, what a kick!" Cariot commented, waving her sleeves about in excitement. "Try not to play around on the ground, Jen's like a super-robot in grappling! Isn't that right?" Too bad that only Kell and Jen could hear the pink blob right now. If Shirena knew, he would've been sweating bullets at this point. |

For a moment Jen smirked triumphantly as she blocked Shirena's kick, although that didn't last long as her successful defense and counter was met with a counter from the boy himself as he spun about to deliver a roundhouse kick to the girl's head - a move commonly referred to in professional wrestling circles as an enzuigiri; either Jen was half-expecting such a counter from her opponent, or she'd been lucky, but as the blow connected it was clear that Jen hadn't taken the full force of the blow as the impact sent her reeling, only to have her tumble backwards into a roll and recovering in a three-point landing stance. "What a kick indeed!" Jen added to Cariot's remark, the purple-haired girl pausing momentarily to rub the back of her head. "If I hadn't rolled with that one I'd be taking the full force of your kick to my Medulla Oblongata, or lower brain stem. That'd be a fight-ender," the girl continued, before rising to her feet, and this time going into a different stance, with her hands open and raised in front of her, and feet spaced apart at roughly shoulder width - and if her opponent had at least a rudimentary knowledge of Chinese martial arts, he might be able to recognize Jen's stance as a ready stance from the Wing Chun boxing style. With a slight nod of her head, Jen beckoned slightly while maintaining her stance, practically inviting Shirena to once move move in for the attack. |
