It was a cold, dark morning in Hyakuji. Dispite spring not being far off, the sun was nowhere to be seen, and would remain hidden for another few hours, before gently peaking over the surrounding landscape. November took a deep breath, exhaling, the moistened air condensed and turned to an icy mist. She was hunched over, sitting next to the fence that surrounded the roof. More accurately, she was on the side that faced the main gate of the school. Her eyes gazing out over the school grounds still clad in dark... not seeing a single soul. November took another breath tugging slightly on the blazer that she wore, hoping it would help fend of the cold. She was in one sense lucky however, as there was practically no wind to carry the cold air.

Now.. A sane person might ask oneself.. What would a girl like November be doing on top of the school building, long before the school bells even threatened to ring?

November moved both hands to her ears and removed her earrings gently, before putting them into the pockets of her skirt and making sure they wouldn't fall out easily. She scanned the school grounds once more, and listened. Albeit... Not with her ears... but with her mind... Not reaching out to anyone in particular... simply... feeling with her mind... was anyone else nearby? Was there a teacher that had arrived early? A janitor perhaps? Or were there students that arrived early, or perhaps... never left to begin with...? And as time passed.. how long would she last until the pain overwhelmed her, and she had to resort to suppressing her powers, rather than controlling them...

What the hell am I doing here?

This was the thought running all too clearly through Renji Kuzunoha's mind at the moment. He knew the answer, of course, was to continue his training and try to help people. Hyakuji was a city that seemed to constantly generate its own problems. Still, he couldn't help but feel a bit of emptiness given his current situation after acclimating to the new school.

November surprisingly wasn't the only one on the rooftop at this rather odd time. Renji would've been pretty hard to spot for the girl upon arriving, however. He was currently laying on top of the small access area that housed the doorway that opened into the stairs that descended back down inside the school building; eyes locked onto the sky. He had spent the night skulking the city training and fulfilling his calling as an Onmoyji. It was equally no surprise that Hyakuji was a hotbed of supernatural activity. By the time he was finished it was so early that Renji didn't feel too confident about his ability to slip back into his dorm room without awakening his roommates; and there was no need to trouble them.

The solution was simple. He'd just wait out the morning on the roof of the school then go right to class. He had already been up all night, there was nothing an hour of sleep would do for him as far as staving off falling asleep in class. It was a sacrifice he'd have to make. The chilled air kept him alert and with little else to occupy his mind, Renji couldn't help but think over the events that brought him to this point in his life. The loss of his parents was not something he focused on too often. Still, there was so much he didn't understand about what had happened.

Renji had heard the door open, but it didn't matter. It was likely one of the school janitors checking up on things before classes formally began. The most common turn of events is that they'd just leave having never noticed his presence, so it wasn't something worth him placing any focus on. He supposed he should feel some sense of satisfaction about his exploits during the night. Yet, he was not the city's defender. Hyakuji's troubles numbered too numerous and encompassed too many situations for any one person to hold responsibility for relieving its problems. Here, he was just another student in the end.

So why did I come to this city?

So why did I come to this city?
From her hunched over position, she suddenly sprang up onto her legs, pushing herself up against the Fence with the obligatory clattering of metal that produced. Her heart went from calm to frantic in about a tenth of a second, as the thought echoed in her head. It was the only thinking being nearby... and how close it was... How had it gotten here? When? Why hadn't she heard the door open? Why was it contemplating it's own decisions?!

The cold air stung in her throat and lunges, she was practically panting at this point, in a state of panic, fear, and outright surprise... November tried to come up with the best course of action.... What should she do?!

"S-show yourself!"

She shouted, but not too loudly, in a shrilled, panicked voice. Her cheeks flustered the moment she closed her mouth, dreading how weak and panicked she sounded... she should've remained calm.. and waited.. and found whom it was.. but instead.. she decided to announce to the world that she knew someone was there... And.. She had no idea if that someone.. was friendly.. Hostile... Or a pervert in a trenchcoat...

"Hrm?" Renji Kuzunoha questioned groggily as he sat up and peered over the side of his perch in response to the sudden and shrill shout that had been given. He was wearing a trench coat alright, but looked more like a student than a random pervert. Maybe he had just assumed the janitors were super-powered too. But Renji could envision a scenario where his random presence on the rooftop, if sighted by sheer chance, might freak out the average person or something. However, this did not prove to be the case. As his gaze cast over the rooftop, he saw the source clearly: another student, a girl. It didn't look like she had been poking around to the point of finding out his hiding place; so just how did she know he was there?

Huh, lucky guess or what?

"Oh, didn't think anyone else would come up here this early," Renji spoke up slowly as he let out a loud yawn and then flopped back down onto his back seeing no reason to give up his spot, "Don't mind me. You can just pretend that I'm not here." He supposed he could have been a bit more kind about it. It was weird. At his other schools, he had been the only type to be up on the rooftop like this. Maybe that was par for the course in Hyakuji. Still, he was there to get a little peace before going to class so he intended to do so.

Wonder why she's up here this early...

It wasn't really in Renji's nature to take a particular interest in the business of others. If somebody was in danger, he snapped into action quick enough. However, something about the night had left him feeling particularly pensive; enough to spare a passing consideration to the girl as he resumed his view of the sky.

Her chest continued to heave back and forth.. Her eyes still struggling to see him.. There! She spotted him as he sat up, Illuminated by the same moonlight that made her, standing upright, easy to spot... She took another deep breath, which condensed again... She forced herself to calm down, straightening up, releasing the fence she had clutched with her hands.. She kept her eyes on him.. as her hands moved to brush off her skirt and blazer, as well as straighten them out. Though, she had no idea whom he was... and.. why he was wearing a trench-coat... She felt that she wasn't in any immediate danger... At least, His thoughts didn't seem to suggest it...

"Why are you here?"

She spoke out with a much more controlled pitch, although not hostile.. she was.. very wary of his actions... What was a man in a trench-coat doing ontop of a school building this early...? As he lay back down, she more or less lost sight of him.. and assuming he did too, she slowly began to inch her way along the fence.. away from him.. creating more of a distance... giving herself more time to react, should he suddenly spring up and decide to attack her.. or worse...

November glanced about quickly, scanning the surrounding area for any objects.. rocks, a branch blown down by the wind.. a left behind lunchbox... anything she could use as a weapon...

Wonder why she's up here this early...

"What does it matter?" Renji questioned back coldly as the girl asked what he was doing there. He had been there first, right? It's not like his presence was really meant to interrupt or bother anything. Ultimately, he was just killing time till home room started. To be fair, though, he could see how he might have startled her and thus sparked the response he got. He let out a frustrated sigh and was about to be a bit more kind on the matter, but then that was when she said something else that surprised him.

Wait a minute...

He was groggy, sure enough. But Renji was pretty positive that he hadn't actually asked the girl any questions. Nothing to call for him to be told it was none of his business. He patted the fur that lined the collar of his red coat pondering for a moment before forcing himself to sit back up and look in her direction suspiciously wondering what was up.

"Maybe it's just me," he spoke with an inquisitive tone, "But what do you mean it's none of my business? I didn't ask you anything..." What was going on? Was it just some offhanded comment? If he had thought about it a little more, he could have realized just exactly what she was replying to. However, it had been a long night and the determined Onmyoji was far from focused at this point.

She stopped where she stood.. a few.. small rocks.. Hardly the size of a thumb lay by her feet, she didn't know how they'd gotten there, but that was the least of her concerns... She tensed slightly. Pondering her next words carefully... the unclear thoughts that trickled into her head seemed.. hazy and slow.. he didn't seem alert at all.... Nor.. was he attempting to hide his thoughts very well, he was telegraphing most of it straight to her... and for once, it was quiet enough in her head for her to carefully listen... without having to strain herself...

Wait a minute...

Her heart almost stopped as she heard this thought... what was wrong.. what had she done..? Why would he... She stopped breathing for a few seconds as she realized that he hadn't spoken all of it... he'd thought loud enough for her to think she heard it... his thoughts seemed to come quicker.. he was moving.. he was suspicious!

She pressed herself slightly against the fence, regretting having come up onto the roof this day... What should she say? How should she respond!?

He spoke, and she listened.. not only to his words.. but his thoughts... he was defiantly more alarmed.. and he seemed as if he'd almost caught on to what she could.. but.. he was still confused... November had to diffuse any suspicion and quickly!

"Y-you.. told me to not mind you at all.. but it's.. n-none of your business what I do.. N-now is it?"

Her voice was slightly shaky.. It had sounded so much better in her head than it had coming out between her lips...

"But I never said that," Renji replied without thinking too much as his mind began to race following this statement along to its logical conclusion. She said he had. But he hadn't. It had just been an idle consideration in his mind. He was a little out of it, but it definitely wasn't a dream. He knew what he had said and reassured himself in his mind.

I only thought it...

Shifting, Renji sat on the edge of the area above the doorway folding his legs as taking up some meditative pose. Either she could read his thoughts or it had just been a lucky guess based on overreaction. In any case, she looked a little spooked as well. That was also weird. Why was Hyakuji such a weird place? Renji assumed he dealt with weird enough it should be normal, but still here he was thinking the city was weird.

"I suppose you're right," he laughed softly finally answering the girl's stammering response, "I guess we're both just here because we're here. We'll have to be adults about it and share." This was the reality. Though Renji couldn't help but wonder on the exact nature of what was going on. An experiment seemed to be the best course.

She had reacted pretty fast to his original thought. Pausing for a moment to ponder, he concluded that a targeted thought meant to illicit a response should suffice well enough. Letting his mind calm down from the cluttering of thoughts, he put forth just a single thing as a final statement onto what he had spoken to see what would happen:

Though I don't mind sharing the space with a cute girl.

"Y-you d-did! You did tell me to ignore you!..."

She was grasping for straws, and he knew it... he thought it... and as he thought.. she knew... Seeing him shift onto the edge, folding his legs up into a pose... a pose she'd never seen before... Was he going to flash her!?

She took a step back at the thought, yet immediately repulsed the idea. She'd been watching the news too often lately.. Particularly the one about Flashers... Her skin had crawled throughout the entire thing, as she imagined how she'd hear the flashers vile, dirty thoughts!...

But this man wasn't... one... Was he a student? A hobo?... Through the dim moonlight he seemed too well.. dressed..? He was wearing something under the trench-coat but she couldn't quite make out what it was...

.....

Well.. Yeah.. I guess we're both.. wait.. Is he really a student..?

She tilted her head and focused her sight... trying to make out more of his facial features... Was he in his early or late teens..? Was he older...? Subconsciously, she began to stand up onto her toes, trying to get a better look..

Share..? Oh.. I guess the roof... W-well.. There's not much more of a....

She blinked... It was as if he suddenly... shut up... In her head that was... It became mere background noise... and she wondered what....

Though I don't mind sharing the space with a cute girl.

"W-Who a-are y-you C-calling C-cute!?"

His thought had been so clear, so uncluttered, that she couldn't in her nervous state, tell the difference... Her cheeks flushed red at his compliment... Taking a step back and hitting against the fence again with the clattering of metal once more...

"Hah," Renji mused feeling quite pleased that his hunch had paid off, "So you are reading my thoughts." It was really the only logical conclusion. Still, it felt good to be sure about the situation rather than wondering if he was half-dreaming or imagining things. Mystery solved. Though it was still a little odd how cautious the girl seemed to be acting.

"You could have just said so," he added plainly as he flopped back once more onto his back this time letting his legs partially hang over the edge, "It's not like it is something to hide around here, I guess." Hyakuji High. A school for those with super-normal abilities of all types. Here, no matter their origin, it was a place where they had peers and could be accepted. Not that it mattered to Renji, he kept his own burdens shouldered carefully out of normal sight anyways.

"And there's no need to freak out," Renji tacked on suddenly with another lazy yawn, "I didn't mean it. I was just thinking that to see if you were reading my thoughts." Of course, with all the thinking he had been doing, Renji didn't really think too much about this new comment. In a way, it came off like an insult even though that wasn't his intention at all. It wouldn't have been too surprising for anyone that knew the boy. He tended to come off pretty poor in most social situations.

I'm way too easy to read...

She let out a sigh as he figured it out... She was in-fact here partially for that exact reason. She still, even after trying to for years at home, still not fully grasped the difference between a thought heard and a voice heard.

Wait.. Did he mean...?

He seemed smug with himself, his thoughts revealed as such... Yet had he... simply thought so to trip her up..? Was that really the way it worked... Was that right..? Whilst she didn't exactly believe herself to be sex idol material, she did think of herself as well.. decent... She had no flab, although not very strong, strong enough to triumph over those whom instead spent their time rotting in front of televisions... Did he really just think so to...? Well it was a smart way to do so she guessed, a strong thought, and a surprising one at that...

Wait... Why was that surprising...?

Did she not even think of herself as possibly being cute..? No.. that wasn't it... it was more that... she never really thought about how beautiful she actually was, and instead, about how she simply felt about herself... and yet.... it was... seldom.. she'd been called... cute....

She pushed that thought aside, easing up slightly and regaining her balance, her fingers releasing their panicked, surprised grip of the fence, and she somewhat regained her normal posture.

As he spoke again, she seemed to sour... her expression turned from startled and flustered to... Distant... and cold... She suddenly took on a completely different vibe, and as she thought.. he spoke again... and this... ticked her off...

Just how insensitive is this....

Her thought stopped... Whom was she to call him insensitive? She had the choice to restrain her powers, to make it so that she didn't have to listen to his thoughts, she didn't HAVE to know what happened in his head. And yet.. she chose to be able to listen, to try to control when she listened, and whom she listened to...

That naturally didn't excuse him from being insensitive and well, he was toying with her emotions and self esteem but... what right did she have to judge him, when she was quite practically, reading his every thought like an open book. She was stealing away his privacy, simply by standing there. Not to mention, this wasn't just any kind of privacy, It was the privacy of the mind, the one place, you could simply... Think of how big of an ass someone was, whilst smiling politely and apologizing. When a person couldn't do that in secret without November knowing it, then what right did she then have to call this... Trench-coat wearing possibly a student but also a creepy flasher, insensitive or mean, when he at the very least, honestly expressed what he had actually meant by it..?

Once again, she had to stop herself, and settle it the way she always had, although it was her choice to invade the privacy of others against their will, it was her gift, and she intended to use it for Good, her version of right, regardless of the fact that she would rarely receive permission to use it. And that in time, she would learn to avoid using it when it wasn't needed, without relying on artificial limiters. She wanted to be in control of her gift, and not let her life be dictated by it, as it had been...

"The thing is though... My... Power... Is still not something that is.. ordinary... Although you carefully hide your burdens as you so put it yourself... I cannot say how your powers work... as I haven't... read... that from you yet.. Are those with similar powers to yourself, treated differently from those with mine..? Do you simply not use them and that's that..? Don't you find it... Offensive... That I can read your thoughts without even trying..? That I have to work to NOT hear them..? That... Instead, your thoughts flow into My head..? Every time you think about something, that you don't want others to know, a thought, remember a secret... I'll know it.. Do you want to be near me..?"

She spoke her mind... In a controlled, if cold and slightly sad tone... She did fumble with words a bit, but this was her reality. She simply didn't fit in, she hadn't really found anyone that shared her abilities, because in a way, she'd been too afraid to try... She'd used her earrings both to protect herself from others learning her thoughts but also... to avoid learning the thoughts of others... She didn't want to know that the person that greeted her in the morning with a smile, also thought that she was a annoying waste of time. She didn't want to know, that the teacher that seemed to care about her, cared about her breasts, and not her as a person. People wore masks. Politeness and common courtesy demanded that they do this, lest they be considered rude... Her powers took these things, and hurled them into the sun.

All people were mean, people said one thing and thought another, that was reality to her. She had yet to meet a single person, that was simply honest...

"What does it matter?" Renji questioned as the girl asked about his own abilities, "We're given our lot in life and good or ill it's our burden to carry. Using our abilities or not... they still exist.... it's not something you can run from. I'd rather embrace what I can do and put it to good use." The teen pondered upon his own gift: the Kuzunoha bloodline. It was true that, like many of the students, he had amazing abilities.

It also marked him for death among the creatures of the supernatural world. It was this same mark that killed his parents. It was a pretty direct response. Renji was actually a little surprised with himself that he'd give such a chatty answer. Not only that, he felt obligated to say more.

"And I dunno," he continued addressing the second point of her questioning, "It sounds like that could be pretty handy. Like a secret code when you needed it. And as for the rest of it... I don't really care. I have nothing to hide and I'm not ashamed to own up on my opinions. If you read them then so be it." It was a pretty bold statement, but it held true for Renji. He didn't really care. Unlike the average person, he didn't drop much time on worrying if what he said might upset someone or come across as a bit of a faux pas in whatever social situation he happened to be in.

This was as much for everyone else's good as his own. Renji was the type to keep everyone at arms length. He knew that his world, being an Onmyoji, was not for everyone. A close attachment to him made that person a target. After seeing what had happened to his parents, it wasn't a risk he could take. Renji was good. He had never faced a defeat before. Maybe he was the best? He thought as much. Still, he couldn't accept creating a situation where he might not be able to save the day.

Eh...?

It didn't... Matter...?

Why was... How could he think like that...? She gazed up at him, her cold demeanor slowly fading. Sure... having powers was... not unusual at all... Most people still had to carry the burden of that... That they had the ability to do things others couldn't, and yet live with themselves.... Might she not be that different after all..?

At least not in his eyes...

Her mind was in turmoil... And as he spoke again... She realized that in a way whilst he was right... He didn't understand... It was... A gift... yet a curse and... she knew she should use it for the betterment... but... All it had caused her thus far was Misery...

But... Maybe... This person... This was the first time she'd met someone who spoke his mind so easily... and she, whom heard his thoughts so easily... knew he was being honest... She'd... sought for someone like him her entire life... Someone whom she didn't have to doubt, someone who simply... did.. and was....

"M-my... Name is November Terra... What's yours...?"

"Renji Kuzunoha," he answered plainly. It's not like there was a reason to hide his identity. It could be very likely they might have a class together or even share home room. Of course, even that didn't matter. It stood to reason that if the girl wanted to know his name that bad she could have already plucked the information out of his mind. To the average person, such a fact should have been alarming. However, Renji accepted the reality of the situation with uncaring calmness.

"Class will be starting soon," he added almost as if he were making a general comment to no one in particular. Through the hazy clouds, the first moments of sunlight were finally managing to break through and illuminate the campus grounds. Rolling to his side, Renji flung himself off the edge of his hiding spot landing gracefully on his feet; a loud thud echoing out the impact of his feet upon the rooftop. Now, finally level with the girl, his piercing eyes seemed to cut into her.

"Do you come up here often?" he asked suddenly with a hint of curiosity in his voice, "If so... I'll be sure to hide out elsewhere when I need to in the morning." Once more, it seemed much more rude than Renji intended it to be.

Renji Kuzunoha... A.. Nice.. Name..

As he mentioned that classes were about to start.. she stood still and... listened.. There was a lot more noise than there had been... she hadn't really noticed it until now.. Maybe because he was so close and.. loud..?

She reached into her pocket and gently grabbed her earring. Bringing it to her ear, it gently began to glow when it got close to her head... in the relative darkness of the roof, it was easily noticeable.. and yet only a dozen seconds after it was attached to her ears, the light seemed to fade...

November then looked over to Renji and was surprised to find him now on the roof itself... she had been preoccupied with the noise and hadn't notice him move... nor hear the sound... She really had to work on being more aware of her surroundings...

Her gaze stayed away from his.. at his feet.. as she felt oddly.. shy... The voices had died down, and now.. she heard no thoughts at all...

"I... Do.. I often come up here in the morning.. To train.. and Listen.... and endure....."
