"OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!" "That reaction is how I KNOW I did a good job!"

Updated 6/30/2014 Due to personal relative inactivity, which was due to health reasons and such rather than choice, I've designed these changes to be relatively minor with a stipulated point at which they expand later on as I "catch up". This is marked as "Flavor" and "Future" respectively. Hyakuji "2.5" Template Character Name: Dr. Alexander Siegfried Vaner Gender: M Species: Human Age: 76 Height: 5 feet, 8 inches. (172.72 cm) Weight: 158 pounds, (71.6 kg) Music: Dear Falling Angel Voice: Cam Clark Description or Image of Character Appearance: Character Image Occupation: Retired. Former soldier, medic, weapons scientist, and cross-disciplinary researcher. Receives a military pension. Personality Description: Harshly lawful, with a laser focus on justice and righteousness. Alexander is pleasant to good people, an utter nightmare to those not so much. A quintessentially jaded, cynical, and bitter old man, he's very much someone who has been consistently disappointed and horrified by the world, its events, and its people. In his old age, he's as pessimistic as possible, and tends to assume the worst of people until proven otherwise. After all, if he's right he won't be disappointed, and if he's wrong, he'll get a pleasant surprise. In spite of his extremely bitter views, Alex is deeply committed to doing the right thing no matter how much it may hurt to do so. In his own words: "Do the right thing not because it's easy, not because it's glorious, not because it feels good, and definitely not because you'll be better off for it. You won't. Do the right thing because it's the right thing." With an analytic mind and an at times detached air about him, Alex seems to be observing everything around him at all times, seeming a bit anxious as a result. He's an honest man, and very straightforward whenever able. When confronted with someone he views as evil, his severe nature comes to light, lecturing in a tranquil, quiet rage. Personal History: DOB: March 25th, 1938. Alexander Siegfried Vaner was born in Germany shortly after World War 2 into a poor family in West Berlin. His father had been killed in the war prior to his birth, and his mother was forced to bring him and his two older siblings up alone. In early childhood, he displayed significant intelligence, his calculation ability making him a child prodigy. Catching the interest of weapons researchers and military officials alike after an incident in which he pointed out a possible improvement in the firing mechanism of the standard-issue rifles of the time, Alex was taken into government custody at age 7. He agreed to cooperate fully on the condition that his family be given support. It was the last time he'd see any of them. By age 12, Alex had been trained in how to handle a handgun to protect himself. It was worried that Soviets would express interest in capturing anyone with special abilities like his. By that point, the depths of his Calculation knack became apparent in full. The computer systems the facility had access to particularly interested him, though he found them woefully inefficient. And indeed, his mind was a much more powerful computer, so scientists and researchers often gave him numbers to crunch rather than the computer itself. Researchers and soldiers alike were interested in him, though regarded him more as a curious asset than a child. Lacking much company, Alex spent many hours each day reading and thinking. He was molded by the army's ways and beliefs, values of efficiency, foresight, justice, and fighting against evil imprinting him. At age 18, 1956, Alex was conscripted. His extreme accuracy with firearms, due to his uncanny mental calculations, led him to becoming a sniper. The facility he called home was transferred to America before this point, as tensions of the Cold War were rising rapidly. With reluctance, he was dispatched in the Vietnam War (Which had just broken out) to serve as a sentry. Exposed to war, Alex was horrified by the unspeakable violence that surrounded him for years. In spite of this, he had a task, and that task was to kill. Fellow soldiers were simultaneously grateful for his presence, and more than a bit disturbed by his impersonal demeanor. He was nicknamed 1-5, simplified to Mr. 15, by the group after one incident where he killed 5 enemy soldiers with a single shot. He'd done so by noticing a jammed magazine in an enemy's rifle, which he fired upon with exact precision to rupture in a way that shot the entire enemy group of 5. He was not pleased to be recognized for his killing talents, and very angry when "Mr. 15" spread as a nickname and urban legend in the forces, eventually distorted into Alex being a supersoldier mythical figure with various mistaken interpretations. One of which was that he'd shot 15 men, another was that he'd fought 15 men hand-to-hand, and so on. The stories really did enrage him, which seemed to encourage their spread and further exaggeration. After the US Withdrawal in 1973, 17 years later, Age 35, Alex found himself in the awkward position of having to adapt to life outside the military despite having spent his entire life in it, nearly half of it in Vietnam. Isolated and socially inept, he was soon drawn back to the military, this time as an assistant in weapons development due to his gift. He worked across many fields: Computer development: Though he was not directly involved, he did meet often with those responsible for the ARPANet of 1969. Alex focused more on hardware at the time, and speculated that there had to be a more efficient way to transmit and store information rather than the ineeficient electrical circuits of the time, but was unsure of what such could be. He did lay out a hypothetical groundwork design, indulging in some "creative exercises", where if futuristic materials and manufacturing procedures advanced, it would be possible to design some sort of adaptive mechanical soldier, which could be deployed in severe situations that would be hopelessly suicidal for humans. Hypothetical schematics (that relied on components not remotely available at the time) were of interest, and archived, though not taken seriously as anything but food for thought. Arcane Research: A bizarre thing to contrast with his other disciplines, but given the notability and utility of it, it seemed logical for Alex to delve into a difficult-to-understand subject given he was gifted with analytic understanding. He determined that "mass producing" anything magical was unfeasible, at least not using the magics he researched, but proposed that mages and "elemental-specialists" could be instrumental in factories, enabling chemical processes that would be prohibitive or even impossible otherwise. He himself delved into a magic to specialize in a particular element pair, Iron and Aluminum, and demonstrated the feasibility of having someone with such magic present in arms manufacturing facilities capable of quickly tempering firearms or identifying unseen defects. Nuclear Reactor Safety: Alex, after touring an atomic power facility, found himself a civilian cryomancer, and pitched the idea to have said cryomancer present near the reactor as a fail-safe, capable of cooling the reactor in an emergency. This was an acceptable idea, and one that was popularized after a control rod jammed and was unable to fully regulate the reactor at a later date, Alex's cryomancer easily preventing the situation from becoming hazardous. Age 38, Many other insightful accomplishments piled up over time, and was rewarded with honorary degrees from various institutions across NATO, though he (correctly) suspected that this was a "follow-the-leader to show everybody how united we are" sort of thing. He received a Doctors of Science from Cambridge, amusingly right around the time he was completing his Master's thesis at Cornell University, thus receiving his degrees technically out of order, though by that point they were mostly formalities due to his existing contributions. His home country of (West) Germany followed suit, proudly declaring him one of their own via the (recently established) Free University of Berlin awarding him a Doctors of Science as well. This was part of overall increasing ties between the academic institutions, and in Berlin's case, what Alex jokingly referred to as "a middle finger to the Soviets." Thus, by age 41, Alex held 2 Doctoral degrees and one Master's, though he would later complete Cornell's Doctorate program, albeit at a disruptive pace due to having many commitments to work on at a time. By age 44, Alex, working at a synthesis laboratory for developing new chemical procedures, had formulated a means to produce rocket fuel more efficiently for missiles. While doing so, he experimented with combat performance enhancing supplements to be added to rations, though discontinued the idea due to inefficiency. He was also conscripted to design a "humane" chemical weapon that would kill rapidly and painlessly, and despite efforts, was unsuccessful at developing an efficient production method. His successes at the time included: -Developing an epoxy that was radiation-resistant that could be mixed into cement. The formula was stolen by a Soviet spy, though the spy was caught after transmitting it. It would, years later, be used in sealing Chernobyl. -Adapting many of Nicola Tesla's hypothetical works into functional designs, such as a very strange-looking "liquid lightning" fluid battery, an "Aurora Scrambler" that was able to use the Earth's own magnetic field to jam radio frequency broadcasts. -An air-pressure resonance device that saw no practical use but was easily manufactured, so later found market application in a particular type of massage chair. It was originally designed as a means to equalize gas pressures in chemical reactions. Alex received a royalty fee for these yearly due to his ownership of the patent, though sold the patent later. This earned him some suspicion, as he'd calculated stock market trends and predicted (exactly) that the company would go out of business 5 years later. The legal scrutiny his analytic prowess earned caused him to sign a secret legal agreement that he not participate in the stock market at all, as being able to predict stocks would cause utter economic pandemonium if word got out someone could do that. Age 50. A small town had been built over an old, forgotten dump for chemical byproducts, the strong majority of them from Alex's work, long before regulations came into being. Additionally, all records of dump sites were classified, as it was feared that examining waste could lead to reverse-engineering. The town's aquifer and soil were contaminated heavily. When news reports began to circulate about the town's mysterious wave of chronic illness and birth defects, Alex realized with pure horror that the underground containers for the chemicals must have eroded. His work had produced untold suffering, in his mind. Venturing into the town for himself, Alex sank to his knees as he saw crippled families, mental illness, and birth defects hobbling children's bodies and minds. He gazed upon his work, he of mighty mind, and despaired. He would never forgive himself, and the following two years were filled with a downward spiral of depression, self-hatred, and a growing Age 55. Suicide attempt unsuccessful. In a moment of pure irony, Alex failed to shoot himself before being restrained due to his own hesitations at the last minute. He was convinced by a colleague named Dr. Graham Junzt that wasting his gifts like that would do nothing but prevent him from making amends. Alex began to work with Graham, discovering that the fellow researcher was, as he scornfully put it at first, "playing God". Graham refuted this. He was working at creating an anti-supernatural homunculus, yes, made in the image of an angelic man, but it was not to "say he could do better", rather engineer a specialized, sentient entity to deal with threats conventional means couldn't. Graham mentioned that he'd been researching extensively with his peers on old writings regarding the supernatural, such as malevolent spirits, and had indeed captured a fire imp for examination. Alex assisted the Homunculus Project, originally code-named "Adam" before Alex pointed out how that was NOT helping the "playing God" accusation. The name "Apollo" was chosen ultimately, as solar energy was playing a large part in design and development. However, Alex severed ties with the group, warning them that science a means to prosperity's end, NOT an end in and of itself. When he discovered that experiments of "soul dissection" had been proposed, he angrily informed everyone in no uncertain terms he'd see them all flung into a prison if they ever tried it. Age 57. Alex banished himself from research communities, no longer believing in himself or others. For the next year, he would subsist quietly off his pension and patents. During that time, he realized that he still had a debt to the world, and that being inactive and moping all day would do nothing to help anybody. He didn't appreciate the world, but that was no excuse to neglect it. He obtained a teaching degree and taught history rather than science, feeling that he had no right to the discipline he'd caused so much anguish in. (By this point now having a ridiculous four degrees.) Age 58. Visiting an orphanage, Alex had decided that he needed to bring up a child the right way. A young 2 year-old boy known only by the first name Ian caught his attention. Intuition was not something he believed in, but he was seized with the feeling of recognition. Checking the boy's known history, he was haunted by the realization that Ian's parents had grown up in the very chemical dump town he'd poisoned by proxy. Genetic defects were expected to cripple the boy, and already he was reported as displaying odd mental deficiencies, particularly sensitivity to bright lights and sounds. Alex took Ian into his custody. Speaking with the parents, who were already suffering severe mental degradation and barely able to understand that he was going to take care of their son, he promised them Ian would live a good life. Age 70. Despite his best efforts at parenting, Ian grew into a sociopath obsessed with his own ambitions. Alex sent him to Hyakuji, hoping for the best. Within weeks, he'd lost all contact with his adopted son. Ian had become a hateful, ruthless, cruel boy, and Alex couldn't even look at him without feeling the culmination of his failures and broken promise. He was too old to use his magic, so was unable to ever discipline the powerful boy. Fearing the worst, Alex immediately traveled to Hyakuji. Ian had sold his soul, and memories. Alex resigned himself to dying a failure, which did indeed happen when Ian devoured him heartlessly to stay alive when the Machine Empire attacked, the King in particular thrashing Ian around after he attempted to betray Hyakuji. Alex died cursing the boy's monstrous, selfish, heartless nature. Then Alex awoke in front of a remorseful, different Ian. The Machine King had been denied at the end of time, and the events of the attack had never happened, so his death was undone, the 'correction' of time's flow shunting him to the location of the group's return, earning Ian a subsequent day and a half of yelling. Age 76. Exposure to being "outside" of time, he conjectures, has led to his actual age and history being 'out of synch'. Much easier to just act like that hadn't happened. His health was in clear decline, the anxieties and occasional chemical exposures over the years leading Alex to begin having heart and lung trouble. Seeing the trials and troubles of others, he decided to take matters into his own hands, and fabricated himself an iron technique to sustain his heart and blood to enable him to function at acceptable capacity and intervene. Powers/ Abilities: Calculation: Alex's inborn gift is that his mind can process and retrieve information at a computer-like pace. As if he had an encyclopedia in his mind, almost any fact he has ever learned can be recalled at a moment's notice, and it only takes simple observation for him to learn something. This also enables him to make split-second calculations about a situation. For example, he could throw a rubber ball and know exactly what it was going to do because he'd plotted out the trajectory and exact force he applied. He is analytic, and can understand concepts, and permanently retain them, with extreme ease. He is not "almighty smart", as he is limited to his perceptions and at times his own biases. It is entirely capable for Alex to be wrong, but he'll generally recognize when he's making a guess that could be inaccurate. Fatigue or distraction can also give him misled results. Ferrokinetic Magic: This is not an Elemancy-type ability, as Alex is unable to do this inherently. Instead, he has extensive familiarity with magic capable of influencing iron atoms, to the point where he needs no somatic or verbal components. However, he does need to use gestures with his hands. Alex "conducts" metal with his hands and fingers as if he were leading an orchestra, and seeing him use this does look as if he's directing instruments, with flourishes and sweeping motions. This means that he must have at least one hand free to actually use this ability. Alex can affect the structure of any iron-containing object, vibrate iron atoms to superheat a given structure, or even pull up to 50 kg out of his environment to use daily. (Note that he keeps 5 10 kg iron weights hidden in his jacket, so he almost always has this immediately available.) Shaping metal by hand is one thing, but using it is another. Typically, Alex will "alloy" the iron with whatever he can in the vicinity, and his vast knowledge of materials will certainly come into play with that. For example, he can expand vaporized iron particles into the atmosphere, then re-condense it into an object to produce a steel object of varied carbon content. (Notably, he can't make people inhale such particles, as basic exhaling is enough air pressure to prevent it.) Though, rather than rely on this inefficient tactic, Dr. Vaner simply carries a piece of charcoal hidden in a pouch on his person at all times. Iron that Alex controls need not obey gravity, and is capable of moving at up to 1 meter per second, a favorite tactic of his being rapid shield deployment in this way. He does not, however, use a "magic carpet" of iron, he has a car for getting around instead after all. The most obscure use for this ability, which has only come up once ever, is to negate nuclear fusion. Dr. Vaner was once confronted in the Korean War with an enemy soldier who possessed devastating, though small-scale, nuclear fusion techniques. As the fusion of iron atoms yields no net energy for a reaction, he quickly figured out that he could introduce iron atoms into built-up reactions to nullify attempts to blast him with atomic energy. Alex can also weakly magnetize iron, though this ability is typically only used for casual purposes such as sticking things together, with about as much adhesive force as a Post-It note. The total number of applications for the ability is limited only by his imagination, and Dr. Vaner is quite creative: -Iron golems/constructs (albeit tiny ones, given he only has 50 kg at a time) -Iron or steel weapons -Iron dust manipulation -Rusting an iron object -Simple machines, such as an iron pulley with an iron cable. -Iron armor for himself -Scrapping an existing iron object, though interference from bodies prevents him from doing this to anything held or worn. -Traps such as iron tripwires and weights. -Slightly increasing blood iron levels to boost someone's energy by providing them with more oxygen carrying capacity. Note that this can only be done to himself, and he uses this to supplement his weakening heart and lungs. It's the technique he developed with Ian's (guinea pig) assistance to enable him to be active again, as without this he would be too weak to use his magic or other abilities. -Barbed wire -Gears, screw-pumps, wheels, rail track, and other simple iron/steel components -Prefabricated parts for him to make other things out of.
Equipment You Have: 50 kg of distributed iron weights across his body, usually in his jacket's padding, some in his belt and shoes. He walks noticeably slowly and heavily, though the easy assumption to make is that, obviously, he's an old man. A 10 kg iron cane he uses to A tablet computer and smartphone, as well as multiple flash USB drives with sensitive information on them, each of which is capable of being read by the phone and broadcast elsewhere if needed.
