Yogen's appearance and personality are often at odds with one another, and take some getting used to. While his bright aqua eyes and light brown hair which fall down past his ears may indicate a quiet and reserved young man, Yogen is a firey and loudmouthed individual. He inherited his father's height, eyes and strong jawline and his mother's hair. His body, lean and muscular, has been shaped by years of training, and you'd be hard pressed to find even the most resilient patch of fat that hasn't been burned away though countless of Master Yoshiro's Daylight Training Sessions. Yogen's skin is naturally fair, but after being exposed to sunlight for a few hours will deeply tan him. Though he is always wearing the Hyakuji uniform during school hours, Yogen always feels more comfortable wearing t-shirts and jeans in his leisure time, and loose-fitting cotton pants and a loose, sleeveless hoodie while training and working.

Occupation: Student
Grade Level: Junior
Powers/ Abilities:
Way of the Iron Dragon: The Way of the Iron Fist, a martial art based on the 9 points of attack and defense of the body, the hands, the elbows, the knees, the feet, and the head. Though no stance is typical or universal, practitioners use short movements to seemlessly transition from parrying a blow to simultaneously countering at one of the body's vulnerable spots (eyes, jaw, cheek, ears, stomach, kidneys, groin, knees, ankles, etc), all without any wasted movement. Every movement is intended to finish a fight in one blow, using any means necessary to do so. No heed is given to ideas of honor or prestige, but all focus is on defending oneself from any conceivable attack.

The primary focus of the Way of the Iron Dragon is placing a block at the point of origin of the attack, regardless of facing an unarmed or armed opponent. The part of the body where the movement for the attack starts is the primary source of strength, and where blocks are directed. For example, a kick is most effectively blocked with a knee, elbow or hands to the thigh, so the kick dies before it gains any momentum. Armed attacks are most effectively blocked where the opponent holds the weapon, so the Way of the Iron Dragon is a martial art that is most effective and dangerous at extreme close quarters. To that end, practitioners drill footwork and movement constantly to close distances with their opponent to put them in striking range, and attacks require very little room to execute.

Ferrumancy: Ferrumancy is the magical ability to manipulate metals. Every metal emits an undetectable frequency which Ferrumancers can sense, hone in on, and synchronize with to shape and manipulate without touching it. More pure metals emit a clearer and more consistent frequency, making them much easier to manipulate, while impure metals (rusted metals, alloys, ores) are "muffled" by their tainted physical composition and require more time and mastery to efficiently manipulate. Additionally, objects made with complex mechanisms (a watch, a gun) are significantly more difficult to manipulate as a whole, while their individual components (a single gear, a bullet) are much easier to.

Yogen is a proficient Ferrumancer, but can only manipulate two objects at a time using his hands. He can control the shape, density, and, over time depending on the purity of the metal, even the state (between solid and liquid). The degree and amount of metal he can control is based solely on the mass of the object, not the size. Using one hand, Yogen can manipulate up to 15 lbs of metal, and if he uses both hands to manipulate one object, he can bend it to his will more masterfully and can shape an object up 60 lbs. This is not how much weight he can carry on this metal, but the actual amount of metal he can control at one time. Using one hand, Yogen has a carrying ability of about 60 lbs, and using both hands, he can lift up to 150 lbs for a maximum of 2 posts before it will simply drop. The object must be within 10 feet of Yogen for him to manipulate it, though he can detect metal within a 30 foot radius of himself assuming no physical barriers between himself and the object. When moving objects, Yogen can move metal at a maximum of 10 MPH with one hand, and with both hands he can reach a top speed of 25 MPH. However, at these speeds, his control is unstable and instant deceleration is impossible, he must have some space to slow an object down and it requires a great deal of focus.

If his hands are immobilized or restrained his ability to move any object is significantly diminished (as your ability to play ping pong would be if you were handcuffed to the table). He does not need to be able to see the object in order to control it, but does need to be able to detect its frequency which can be muffled by physical impediments such as walls, water, earth. Finally, though he hopes to someday learn to, Yogen is completely unable to control any object that is enchanted with any kind of magic.

The way that Yogen has used his Ferrumancy most in his life is in his trade as a weaponsmith. Master Yoshiro taught him both how to manipulate metal in the first place by teaching him forms to shape it into. Since he began training with Master Yoshiro, Yogen has learned his technique of folding metal upon itself more than is physically possible using a blacksmith's hammer. While he is still an apprentice level smith, the weapons that he does successfully create are generally thinner, more well balanced, without compromising durability or strength. All of Yogen's training to date has been with simple bladed weapons (knives and swords), and he can produce these weapons with excellent quality. He is looking for somebody to train with to expand his repertoire. He is comfortable with most common forms of equipment and armor and can use his Ferrumancy to improve equipment brought to him assuming that it is not an overly complex or weapon unique to a specific maker.

To forge a new weapon, Yogen needs the requisite materials and at least a week of time (at least two well developed threads). Since he doesn't use weapons beyond his gauntlets and his hands, Yogen never forges weapons for himself but on commission. Repairing a piece of equipment takes less time, but is no less complicated. It takes at least one well-developed thread to synchronize with the weapon and repair it like new. Simple improvements to a piece of equipment (fine blade sharpening, wear and tear repair, cracks or chips) can be done very quickly and take only a post or two. These weapons only last for one complete thread after they are forged, unless the person they are forged for requests the weapon as a power upgrade.

Tengu Gauntlets: Said to be forged by the mysterious creatures of the forest, the tengu, these gauntlets allow the user to interact with magical energy directly. The gauntlets release a repellent force which deflects energy across the entirety of their surface. However, to do so, Yogen must at least match the energy of the attack in order to redirect or overcome it, the laws of physics still apply even with magic. Like with martial arts, the block or deflection must have enough strength to overcome and redirect the oncoming energy, or the attack will connect. With these gauntlets, the difference in power is translated into the physical pressure Yogen experiences. Regardless of how much he exerts himself physically, Yogen will not be able to overwhelm the attack unless he pours enough energy into the gauntlets.

The gauntlets protect his hands from harm from any direct magical source, but hold no sway over non-magical forces. For example, using these gauntlets and the appropriate amount of energy, Yogen could catch a fireball thrown at him by an opponent, but would still experience the heat generated by the energy, and the gauntlets would not protect him from the smoke. These gauntlets simply shield him from the energy at the source of the attack. Additionally, non-magical energy (lasers, bullets, non-magical, force fields) are not affected by the energy of the gauntlets and cannot be deflected with them. While channeling his energy through these gauntlets, Yogen cannot simultaneously manipulate metal using his Ferrumancer abilities, though he can still detect the frequencies of metals around him.

These gauntlets, made from a steel alloy, are enchanted with the ability to allow the physical world to interact directly with the magical and supernatural world. The back of the hands and forearms are completely covered by plates of metal that fit closely together like scales which allow unhindered movement of the wrist. The final plate protrudes from the back of Yogen's elbow by an inch and a half providing complete protection of his forearms. The fingers are covered with jointed plates that fit together in a scale-like fashion as well, allowing for complete range of motion in the fingers. The palm is covered by a single piece of metal, as is the underside of the forearm. In order to fit to the arm of the user, the piece of the gauntlets covering the underside of the forearm is opened and shut by clasps which allow the wearer any degree of a tight fit they would like. Running beneath the gauntlet's metal are gloves made of thick leather, which protect the skin of the arms from the shifting metal plates of the gauntlets.

Personality Description: Yogen is a fiery individual, more likely to act on impulse as opposed to any form of plan or rational foresight. In any case, he means well, and acts with the best intentions, and follows through on anything that he starts. Though as a child this lead to a streak of impish behavior and countless fistfights, he has learned to rein himself in to a point. He is spontaneous and is not one to get caught up in over-thinking a situation (whether this is a good or a bad thing is yet to be seen). His straight-forward nature makes him very competitive, though he's not the kind of person to have excessive pride or a bad attitude about winning or losing. He simply loves the thrill of competing with other people to test his own abilities and the abilities of others.. Despite this, he is willing to admit it when he is at fault, and always willing to accept the consequences of his actions. His best coping mechanisms for dealing with complex, complicated and dire situations, is to make light of them. "If you can't laugh about it, you have to cry about it," he read in a book once, and has subscribed the the philosophy himself. Even in the darkest of situations, Yogen will usually be wearing a grin.

While fighting an opponent he considers to be his equal or better and when he is forging are the only times that people see a different side to Yogen. He becomes calm and sharply focused on the task at hand, and only after he's finished will he start to grin again. After years of exposure to combat and steel, his mind and soul are most at rest when he is shaping metal or having his face and body pummeled. Psychologists might call it conditioning, but he chooses to believe that it's because fighting and forging are the two things he was born to do.

Personal History:
The Parents
Very average upper middle-class parents who had a child when they couldn't take the pestering of their families to have one. Once Yogen was born, they weren't exactly sure what to do. They showered the boy with things to keep him amused and loved him as best they could, but anybody could see that "their heart wasn't in it." Craving attention and recgonition, Yogen began to act out at home, and when he saw that his parents were rarely home to see that kind of behavior, he spent most of the time prowling the streets.

The Childhood
Yogen spent most of his childhood playing with other boys in the neighborhood. A strong kid, he assumed the role of leader usually by default or after a fist fight and a bloody nose. Prowling the streets as a pack, Yogen and his gang would often pick on smaller children, demanding money from them and humiliating them in normal ways that children are cruel. For Yogen, the acts were hollow, and behaving this way was the only real way he could see himself fitting in with other people.

The Master
One particular day while stealing money from a group of younger boys, Yogen and his gang were interrupted by a man with salt and pepper grey and black hair who stepped between them and their victims. Yogen, to show his friends that he wasn't afraid of this stranger, remembers running at the man and swinging his fist before a single punch knocked him out cold and he woke up hours later on the floor of the man's house. The man, who had put a cold rag over the boy's swollen eye, was busy preparing tea and turned in time to see Yogen running from the house, refusing to let the old man see him crying. He vowed that he would restore his honor by beating the man's face in. Week after week he returned with his gang and waited outside the house, which doubled as the man's metalworks shop, screaming curses and challenges for the man to face him. As time went on, his friends abandoned him, until he was the only one waiting in the street until nightfall.

One night, Yogen tried the handle of the door to the shop and found it open. Wandering in, he skulked about, looking curiously at the elaborate and beautiful pieces of metal the man sold. They were fantastic, and likely worth quite a bit of money. When he heard somebody returning from the shop at the back, he stole an elaborate pair of metal gauntlets, planning on claiming to his friends that he had won them in a duel. He never had a chance to make the claim though.

Indentured Servitude
The next morning, Yogen walked downstairs to find the man sitting at his dining room table with his parents and a police officer. He learned that the man, Mr. Yoshiro, had followed him home, noted his address, and was threatening to have the boy arrested unless he paid off the debt incurred by the theft by working in his shop. Despite the fact that Yogen was 9, the police were willing to press charges and remove him from his home if he didn't assent. Even at 9, Yogen was stubborn and full of himself, but he wasn't stupid. He agreed solemnly, returned the gauntlets, and showed up the next day at dawn to work at Mr. Yoshiro's shop.

Every day he had to sweep the floors, cut wood, fuel the fires that heated metal in the forge behind the shop, and any other backbreaking task that Mr. Yoshiro could think of for the boy. Muttering curses under his breath, Yogen decided that he hated the man who tortured him every day from sun up to sun down, but for some reason, he felt a contentment at the end of every day before he collapsed into bed. After 6 months of working, Mr. Yoshiro informed Yogen that his body was too weak to keep up this kind of work, and from then on, he would be learning discipline through martial arts. "I won't have a thug working under my roof," he informed the young boy. Every morning Yogen worked, and every evening, he trained. During school, he would come by to find most of his chores done, meaning that all that was left was training until his body could no longer stand. He decided that eventually, he'd beat Master Yoshiro (as he now called his slaver) at his own game to win his freedom.

The End?
Yogen is not sure when it happened, but after some time, he stopped resenting Master Yoshiro and began revering him. Yoshiro was strict and harsh, but never gave the boy more than he could bear. He spoke to him plainly and honestly, and when Yogen started to slack off, would slap him so hard that Yogen's head would ring. After two years, their arrangement had come to a close and Master Yoshiro thanked him and told Yogen that the boy never had to return. The next morning, he opened the shop to find Yogen already polishing the set of swords diligently. The forge was already prepped and the floors were swept. Master Yoshiro smiled and brought Yogen into the forge and began to teach him how to sculp metal.

Apprenticeship
By the time Yogen was 16, he had been working for Master Yoshiro for 8 years. He had been training constantly with the old man for almost the whole time, and had been learning Ferrumancy for almost 6. He no longer thought of Master Yoshiro as his enemy, but more as a surrogate father. Somebody who held him accountable for his actions, and advised him on how to live an honest life. Though Yoshiro never managed to silence Yogen's sarcastic tongue, he had learned to trust the boy, and for his 17th birthday, gave him the same gauntlets that Yogen had stolen 8 years ago. He taught Yogen the power that rested in the flawless steel and bade him farewell. It was up to Yogen to move forward now, to take what Master Yoshiro had taught him and find meaning in the lessons (and the beatings). To that end, Yogen began searching for places to hone his abilities and came across Shin Hyakuji. Using the money he had saved working for Master Yoshiro, he enrolled hoping to find ways to further the skills he'd been learning for years.
