The air was cold. Aya could feel it freezing her neck as she was trotting uphill on the side of the road. With rather light clothes on, the girl was keeping herself warm by jogging in the cold morning air. Puffy clouds came out of her mouth as she arrived at the base of the long stairway that led to Hyakuji Shrine. The blue eyed girl stopped at the base and looked up. 'Rather Steep' she thought, exactly like the first time she went there. Quite a bit of time since her last visit, and the discovery of the eudaemons. Excluding the recent events in the Netherworld, Aya's life assumed a more normal pace. It was a while since she could spend days to store away her energies without using them. Her reserves were almost full. Maybe it was almost time to spend a full day with her metabolism accellerated... The girl was there, looking at the stairs and deciding what to do. Walking to the top might take a while, yet jogging upstairs was going to be exausting without cheating a bit. But, after all, she just concluded she had stored energies to waste, right? Speaking to oneself is one of the strangest things a person can do. That was what she thought as she raised her eyebrows. Aya's eyes reddened, and the girl began running upstairs with little effort. Someone took the time to keep the stairs clean from any snow, so there was no ice on them. Aya wondered if it was the work of Amane, the president of the student council who also worked as a shrine maiden up there. She briefly stopped, on the point she heard the sound of the explosion caused by the first plant monster she faced. Aya slowed down her metabolism and took a deep breath. She looked downstairs. No monsters down there. The whole area was quiet and calm, the snow enveloping the woods seemed to absorb every other noise. The sound of a distant horn of a car kinda ruined the moment, bringing back Aya to reality. The girl accellerated herself and trotted upstairs. With Aya reaching the top, her now blue eyes stared at the empty clearing separating her from the shrine. Nobody was around so early. The stone bench she uncerimoniously threw to squash the eudaemon was back in its place. Aya calmy walked toward its entrance with a satisfied smile. She could really appreciate calm days, without eudaemons or demons to stir up troubles. And, with a bit of luck, that was going to just a normal day. Edited by Sota, Feb 17 2014, 07:00 AM.

"Oh, my. How fortunate we are to meet here!" A cheerful voice called out to Aya, followed by a slight squelching sound as the jelly-like figure of John walked over with a wave. What had he been planning on doing here today, in this cold weather? His gelatinous body probably did not handle low temperatures well, so there had to have been a good reason for him to come here by himself. Swathed in a heavy jacket, a rather goofy looking knitted hat, and multiple waterproof scarves, the swordsman was cheerfully carrying what appeared to be a package. He chuckled at her attire, clearly amused at the idea. "Oh, dear. I can see you are feeling the cold." He teased, pointing at her shirt as if to make her look. "If you wish, I can give you my jacket. I have no need of clothes as I am now, really." He blinked a few times, his one eye focused on his good friend. Would she accept his offer? |

Reckognizing John's familiar voice, Aya stopped, and calmly turned in its direction. The blue eyes focused on the gelatinous figure that, wrapped in heavy clothes, with multiple scarves, was advancing toward her. "J-John!?" she asked, clearly confused at the sight of the boy in a condition she never saw before. The tone of confusion was audible, yet, her face was leaning more toward blank, with a slight shadow of the satisfied smile she had a moment earlier. What happened to her friend? Her eyes slowly moved down to her legs when the boy told her about feeling cold. No. She didn't even have goosebumps yet. But that condition wouldn't probably last much longer. With her metabolism slowed down, she was bound to cool down faster from her jog, so John's offer was something she could consider. Yet, that gelatinous body John had was bound to contain lots of water. "Seems like you need it more than me." she observed as her brain came to the conclusion that he was probably going to solidify in that cold temperature. "I can always alter my metabolism if needed. What happened to you?" Eerily calm. Just your typical slowed down Aya. |

"Yes?" John smiled at Aya's confusion. This was hardly the most baffling thing she had ever seen in regards to him. But it was good to receive her concern, really. His rather unfortunate accident had made him rather odd-looking, and seeing that Aya did not simply shrug it off mattered a lot to him. His gelatinous form creaked forward a few times, more than a little stiff from his continued exposure to the cold. Crystals would probably form soon, but at least she would be warmer than him. "Mistakes were made, and I was transformed into such a being." He waved his hand over himself, grinning self-depreciatingly as he did. "I don't think that I can stay out much longer. Come, how about we talk about this inside before I become a statue?" He gestured stiffly, turning to look at his slowly hardening arm with his single eye. Apparently, his disability carried over to his new form. "I suppose that I may need something to warm me up later. Perhaps some body heat would be nice." Surprisingly, his tone and expression were normal. He wasn't engaging in his usual perversity, at least this time. |

John's answer felt kinda evasive. Obviously that was not the kind of answer Aya could consider a satisfactory one. "Let's go inside. I don't like the idea of you breaking into thousands of crystal shards." With that, Aya put her hands in her pockets, and calmly began to walk toward the entrance of the Shrine "I have to admit I don't think it's going to be much warmer in there. Maybe we should go down to a bar, don't you think?" The white haired girl stopped as to wait for his answer, but spoke a little more "Anyway, what brings you here with a package? Is it related to your...uhm...new form?" Aya did not hide her interest for John's mutation into a giant jelly-thing, and was clearly intentioned to know more. How could he treat that condition so casually? Would her powers on metabolism work if she were a giant jelly-thing as well? Oh god, why did she have to put a stupid question in the middle of serious ones in her thoughts, almost every time? The girl discarded the question on herself and focused on John. "Really, John, what happened?" she asked. |

"Me neither." John laughed, haltingly walking towards the Shrine. "I suppose that going to a bar would be better, but it would seem rather odd if we were seen like that. I can handle rumours about my conduct, but it would make me furious if gossipers started speaking about you, too." He gave a small little chuckle at that, turning to his good friend as he did. His face was a little crystallized right now, but he was capable of expression, still. He patted the package, his grin becoming a little teasing. "No, this package is for a certain thing I must do. Not related to my problems, memory or otherwise. Just... Call it matters of love." From his current expression, it seemed like it was something that would make even him blush. He ran a hand through his long, gelatinous hair as if it he was playing with it. What could it be? "Well, anyways, it was an accident!" He said hastily, trying to change the subject. "I was doused with rather odd chemicals, out of the blue. I passed out right after, and woke up like this." A yellow jelly monster. Truly, those must have been some weird mutagens. "But that's all in the past. I'm not all that bothered by it anymore." He waved it off, as if it was not his business. "Were you just here for your daily jog, Aya? I would much rather talk about that than me right now." |

Aya raised an eyebrow hearing John's answer. She heard a lot of things through Hyakuji and she knew by experience how flirty he was. Not that she really cared much about gossipers. Matter of love, really? Was that a present for some lover, then? Who was he waiting then, up there in the Shrine? Was she hitting the student council president, that Amane that worked at the shrine? That flow of thoughts was interrupted when he gave a second too-vague-for-Aya-to-accept explaination. He didn't turn like that by some kind of magic or curse then...he mutated. 'I am bothered' she wanted to answer, but it remained a simple thought when he expressed his preference to a change of subject. Aya archived her worries as requested and proceeded to answer her friend. "Yes, I want to keep my body in tip-top shape and jogging is a simple way to do it." She turned toward the stairs. "It's the second time I jog here" she observed. "This city is big and I vary my paths a lot. It helps me know more about it. Last time I went here I met Masaru, and I just moved from Italy at the time. It was quite a shock to see an alien plant assailing people at the shrine. My life wasn't filled with oddities back there, you know: I used to be an anomaly surrounded by normal people. Hyakuji changed my perspective." |

"Ah. I never did ask about your past." John noted with some embarassment. Dear Aya had helped him so much, and yet he had never bothered to even reciprocate by getting to know her better! My, that had to be an unfortunate thing that had to be remedied. "I do not believe that I ever did have a normal life. But if I can spend my time here with good friends like you, I do not believe that I will mind the oddities here." He laughed, his mouth freezing open for a bit. "Ah. Perhaps jogging around the exterior of the Shrine would be good. I wouldn't want to keep on delaying your daily exercise, and I need to try and keep warm somehow." He rubbed his head, as if that would warm him up. Chances are it'd just lead to his hand briefly sticking to his hair. "Come on. We can talk and run at the same time, can't we?" |

"Good idea" she agreed, beginning to move slowly to pay attention to John's pace and try to keep it as well. The Shrine was still deserted. Apparently nobody had interest in reaching that location. That was good, in a certain sense: the whole place felt even more mystical. Just like it was an hidden place out of time and space. "So, John, what do you want to know about my uninteresting past?" she asked. |

John might have been a slowly hardening slime monster, but he was also able to keep up with Aya. Surprisingly, the heat from the friction was helping against the freezing, allowing him to talk a bit more. He didn't need to fear others overhearing their conversation, anyways. "Your life in Italy, of course!" He laughed. "Was it all just the day to day normalcy that an ordinary high school girl would experience?" Freedom from being mired in the supernatural was something enviable, almost. Not having to deal with big problems such as flaming horses or insane cultists was a blessed thing, even if it meant one would have to be ordinary in return. The two of them knew he never had the chance to experience that mundane state of affairs. Just a little bit of sanity would help, really. |

"My life was pretty much as ordinary as it could possibly be. As you know, my father Isao is Japanese, so we used to spend summers here in Japan. It was a good thing, because I could pick up the language as I grew up." She took a glance to the path they were running. "My dad is a Karate instructor, as such I picked it up as well. It was, well...normal, until I turned 12." She made a small pause. It was the day her life changed. "That was when my mother revealed to me she was a metabolist, and when she began teaching it to me. Metabolic Alteration is a rare art, developed during the middle ages. I know not the full story, but it seems it involved tests on corpses and such, so metabolism researchers were persecuted by the inquisition, tortured and killed. My mother descended from a family that managed to maintain that knowledge secret and preserved it until now." They reached the end of the courtyard, as such, Aya changed her direction, waiting for John to do the same. "Metabolic Alteration is complex and versatile, but requires lots of years to practice and learn. In my case, I mainly learned its application in energy storing and physical augmentation, but it has many other uses. My mother can heal others, for example." "Anyway, storing energy takes it away from my everyday available energy. As a side effect my reactions are slowed down, and I lost my hair color. It wasn't a big deal at first, but it soon became a problem. I could no longer compete in Karate tournaments, as my reflexes were too slow. I learned to store energy, but I couldn't accumulate it indefinitely. And during my everyday life I never had chances to use this stored energy." She stopped as a pebble entered her shoe. "Once per month...I used to spend a whole day with my heightened metabolism, with all the side effects I now manage to keep somewhat under control." The girl calmly removed her shoe and turned it upside down. "I became short tempered, and very easy to irritate. Couple that with my increased strength, and you have a recipe for disaster. My mother knew that, and always kept me home during those days." She had half a laugh "Remember how I destroyed a volleyball back in Shirahama? That was the ordinary when I was discharging my stored powers. Mom had a lot of patience, and gradually teached me to be less influenced by my altered metabolism. I still have a long way to go. I hope to be able to fully control myself like she does." After fiddling a little with her shoe, Aya was ready to resume her jog. "I love my powers, but I always suffered for not being able to practice Karate properly anymore. I'm either weaker and slow, or dangerously strong to fight in regular competitions with a normal human." She stared at John with her usually calm and placid expression. "Since my arrival here, I never had to discharge my stored energy, as I had lots of chances to use it. It's been a long while, but now I'm close to reach the maximum energy I can store." |

Oh my. That was a lot to digest. But finding out so much about Aya in one sitting was quite satisfying. In the absence of food, building friendships was more filling. "I knew you were half-Japanese, but you never did mention your father taught karate." John smiled. "I'd always be up for some lessons from him, unless you think that teaching me directly is a better idea. I would love to practice with you every day, after all~" She then proceeded to explain the origins of metabolist powers to him. Ah, so that was a long, storied history that her family possessed. To think that they would preserve such a secret so well over the years... Why, it was practically mindboggling! The idea of his friend being a bundle of angry energy was surprising, too. Those occasions where she had gone into violent tantrums were few and far in between, enough that he never considered that it had been a phase in her life. "Ah. That explains it all." He chuckled, keeping pace with less and less difficulty as the icy portions of his body became more fluid. "And here I was, thinking it was just the moodiness of a fine young woman growing up." He did feel a pang when she mentioned being unable to practice karate like she wished. But, the next part caught his interest. So, she had nearly maximum reserves, eh? Perhaps.... "Aya, might you be interested in some sparring?" He asked, his bokken slowly shifting upwards until it was visible in his jelly body. "Trust me, this unique constitution of mine can handle it." He stopped jogging for a while, delicately setting the package on a bench. "You can go all out, and practice karate to your heart's content. I do believe it would be a welcome change from being unable to do what you want, hmm?" |

"Speeding up interferes with self control" she said after John joked on moodiness. "Well" she said as she came to a halt, reflecting on John's proposal. The white haired girl pondered a little, her calm face looking at John fro head to toe, and from toe to head again. She then stared at the whole area around her. The clearing before the shrine was wide enough. "This reminds me I played a round in the last Hyakuji tournament here. And I lost." She smiled a little. "I was against Jennifer Chase. She had no real superpowers, so I pretty much lost because I had to hold back. And I wasn't as sturdy as I am now" "So, should I really try to go all out? Won't you feel pain anyway?" She asked. |

"Yes, I figured that out earlier." John laughed, reaching into his body to pull his bokken out. "And I remember the tournament as well." He tapped his face. One eye was missing, even in his new jelly form. The scars he sustained were permanent, it seemed. But he was fine with that, as much as it inconvenienced him sometimes. Sometimes, making a new friend was a painful thing. But surely it would also bring great happiness that would allow him to ignore the consequences. "Yes, it would hurt a bit. But don't hold anything back. I'm not going to be permanently harmed, so it's okay to do everything you can against me." He readied his bokken, slipping back into his smooth stance as the fight began. |

Yuck...John did take advantage of his jelatinous body, didn't he? Walking with a full wooden sword inside the body was an horrible though, but he seemed to no longer have organs to hinder such a thing. His friend suffered a puzzling mutation. How could he still be there, with no organs to sustain him? Aya slightly slapped both of her cheeks to free her mind from that stream of thoughts. If he could walk with a bokken in him, could he engulf her arms as well? This was a more useful thought for the task at hand. She probably had to use her strength and speed to prevent something like that to happen. Aya took a deep breath. She could feel her blood pressure increase, her heartbeat pumping through her neck, and power flowing through her whole body. With her eyes reddening, the girl hopped a few times on her place. "I always feel so light!" she observed "I can't hide I love this feeling!". Three quick punches through the air, and the girl raised her guard. That was it, tapping in her stored power was always great. "Here I come!" she said, lowering her head and dashing forward, quickly closing the gap separating her from John. Her white hair was a silver tail following her movements. She sidestepped as soon as she entered the range of his weapon, stepping in with a punch aimed at his torso, and a second one quickly following to where his stomach was supposed to be. She still held back a little. Despite John's claims, she still held back. What if he could not handle it? |
