POWERS & ABILI-TIES

Knowledge of Truth
Saki's powers are based on the concept of truth. She can somewhat detect 'lies' in her surroundings, both illusions and actual lies. However, Saki can only know that there is a lie or that there is an illusion, nothing more.

There are a few exceptions to this. While her sense of truth is very absolute, it fails if the person talking doesn't know it's not the truth, although even the slightest subconscious doubts can set her off. Furthermore, the ability is drastically enhanced when it comes to games because there's no 'inner aura' of a person protecting a game board. Say, if someone moves a piece in chess, she can 'sense' the intentions behind the moves very accurately. The same theoretically counts for anything else that has emotions imposed on it that isn't directly under influence of someone's power. This makes her an incredible force when it comes to games or anything that resort to any sort of trickery.

Absolution of Truth
Saki can manifest her own truth in two different manners. The first of them is the absolute truth, signified by her lips glowing red as she speaks or attacks. If using this, she cannot speak any lies. All of her words must be individually true. This doesn't mean she can't be extremely misleading with her words, it is just that the most literal meaning of it must not be a lie. If she tries to lie with it active, she starts losing her ability to breathe and starts choking. Doing this repeatedly can cause her tongue to rip itself open on the force of truth meeting lies.

This can be used both offensively and normally. Normally, using it just makes her words carry a bit more weight and makes her unable to lie. While it obviously isn't absolute, listening to her words gives the impression that she definitely isn't lying. Saki can also grant other people the ability to 'speak in red' temporarily.

If used offensively, the truth turns into a blade itself. Well, it doesn't really turn into a blade, but figuratively speaking. If the opponent hears Saki speak or watches her lips move, a wave of red energy will manifest near her opponents. It will appear in a direction relative to Saki's voice- but it will never appear in a blind spot. You will always see a red 'blade' form before it suddenly angles down like the after-image of a sword cut. Even if you are blind or have your eyes closed, it will appear in front of you, as it's not really a thing that is truly 'visible' and completely based on sound creating a visual experience through synesthesia.

After that, the blade swings down. The slash is very fast, but the preparation itself is relatively quite slow- imagine a swordsman staggering an instant before slashing down at something. If it catches you off guard, the chances are high that you will get hit, but how often will a trick like this work?

The blade's sharpness isn't all that high, and it's more based on causing pain than dealing absolute damage. The red wave itself is about as sharp as a thin iron wire- it'll cause a very thin cut on it's actual impact, but it lingering around can slowly saw through you. However, the actual touch of the slash causes synesthesia to kick in once again. Truth is said to cut through everything, and while this technique doesn't physically cut that deep, the cutting feeling will run down your entire affected area. It won't truly feel like your arm got cut off- it would merely cause the entire feeling of a very painful but superficial cut spread down from the impact point to the other side of your arm.

This attack is completely and utterly negated if you cannot hear Saki's voice. When using it offensively, she doesn't really 'speak' like a normal human would, she uses her voice to create special 'waves'. Shutting your ears off normally means that some of the force will still come through, but it'll feel like a bokken thwacking you rather than a piece of iron wire cutting you, and the feeling won't traverse from one side to the other. If you use something perfectly noise canceling, you don't even see the sword form as, to you, it doesn't exist.

This red blade also functions kind of like a saw, slicing back and forth as long as she keeps 'speak-ing', meaning that theoretically it could probably cut through anything given a long period of time. However, she can only conjure one blade at a time and if it is dodged, she needs to stop talking for a moment to form another one. Furthermore, it only functions if she's speaking without taking even the slightest of breaks. So, she'll run out of breath if she keeps it up for too long.

People that don't hear her are completely incapable of seeing the slashes. And while some forms of long ranged communication will be able to pass on Saki's voice properly- anything that digitalizes her voice, like a phone or online call, can not. Something like a string-telephone children sometimes use would work, however! Someone that has extremely sharp hearing will also be more affected by this. Basically, if the original sound waves are transferred and not 'digitalized and recreated', it'll work.

The Force of Truth
There's one other type of truth, although it'd be far fetched to actually call it 'truth'. Unlike the Absolute Truth, there is nothing really 'true' about it.

When active, her lips glow blue. This technique manifests 'theories' as blue bolts that form around her, flying at the opponent like a quick jab after five seconds... and dealing about as much physical pain as a full on punch. Dodging them isn't really possible, as the 'jab' isn't actual real, it's simply a manifestation of her words, think of it as an illusion.

These are all 'accusations' of things, formed by audibly speaking a theory about something a target is lying about, or simply to force truth out where there isn't one. Say, a criminal gets arrested for murder but claims to not be in the area. Saki can say things like 'You killed them', 'You know who killed them', 'You helped them kill them', 'You killed them with a sniper rifle', 'You killed them with a trap', 'You killed them with a remote bomb'. The theories don't have to be sane, they just have to be denied.

Because of Saki's other ability, she can sense when someone lies, so trying to lie only makes the truth more obvious to her. Say, it's true you didn't kill them, but you knew who killed them. She can zoom in on that and keep on zooming until she finds the truth.

All theories must be individually answered. If they are answered, the blue bolts fade away, if they are not, they strike and hurt. A lot. If the opponent refuses to deny it multiple times, they will start to feel as if it is true. Of course, they'll still actually 'know' if it's true or not, but if you're accused of murder and refuse to respond, you'll start feeling as if you actually did murder them for just a while.

When this ability is activated, if Saki is within range of the opponent and they aren't completely covering their ears, they will hear her words with complete clarity. This means she can't simply snipe them with this. Furthermore, being targeted by this explanation gives you the feeling of understanding it. You don't actually know all the rules of this 'game', but her words give the feeling of 'urgency', as if something is to be gained or something is to be lost by responding or not responding.

This ability does have drawbacks, however. For one, it doesn't actually damage anything bar an opponent's psyche. Second, closing off your ears is an absolute defense. Third, the instant Saki loses her grip on firing constant theories for longer than ten seconds, she feels a large amount of pain relative to the amount of theories she fired, but only if they're all denied without uncovering a hidden lie. Fourth, as a result of the previous weakness, she can actually pass out from oxygen deprivation if she keeps ranting on and on and on...

When she has hit a 'truth', however, she can declare it in a more absolute version of her ordinary red. While it's the exact same truth in purpose, it just sounds much more... convincing. It pretty much means their sins are bared completely. However, she must be sure beyond a reasonable doubt and if she tries to say something incorrect, she still chokes as always.

This is not really a combat technique. This is nothing more than a tool to hurt people mentally.

PERSONALITY
Saki is... a mess of contradictions, personality-wise. Her attitude as Saki and 'his' behavior as Minori are complete opposites.

Whenever at school or with family, 'he' is the silent and withdrawn boy Minori. A bit of a jerk that seems to enjoy stepping on other's feelings, but always a bit of a 'cool guy' regardless of his feminine physique.

When she gets to be herself, however, and gets to run around as 'Saki', she's an energetic and happy young female that doesn't seem to want to hurt anything. While, occasionally, she might get carried away, she isn't too much of an angry person at all.

The Minori personality is 99% an act and 1% accumulated frustration over the years she was bullied for her androgynous appearance, her shyness, and her general femininity. While she mostly just acts 'cool' to not be bothered by the people around her, sometimes she slips into an angry mode where she just wants to be a hypocrite and spread the suffering she remembers.

Saki is almost completely secretive about being trans-gendered and has currently told no one in her direct realm of friends about how she feels about how she was born, with the exception of one girl in her circle of friends. With a nice amount of make-up, cuter dressing and a change of hairstyle and a general happier composure, it's almost impossible to tell that they're the same person. She has even trained her voice to be very feminine in casual conversation, although a burst of emotion might cause her to crack. Luckily, her natural voice is rather effeminate as well... so it often sounds more like a natural crack of her voice than like it's an actual boy talking.

There's a few factors consistent with both 'personalities', however. Saki and Minori both hate chronic liars because of how much of her 'senses' they draw. She has a disturbing... need to destroy lies around them, either with or without use of her abilities. On the other hand, considering how much of a complete lie her personality as Minori is, and how she really just... wants to be a proper girl, it could be considered mildly hypocritical to act this way.

For obvious reasons, she hates discrimination and bigotry. While she hasn't been harassed too much over her identity, she has heard... well, the common insults thrown towards it, and she has been bullied for her femininity.

While she tries to act up really strong as Minori and she tries to hide her feelings behind genkiness as Saki, she's a pretty depressive person deep down and is prone to sudden mood swings. While not visible when she's acting as Minori, as she just gets a bit viler and more insulting, her genkiness pretty much bottoms out.

HISTORY
Born as Minori Tatsukawa, and staying that until his thirteenth birthday, the start of his life wasn't very eventful. He went to a regular school... and, well, had a regular life.

Even as a child, he had feminine hobbies. He drew closer to girls then to boys, and often played along with whatever they did. At an early age, it just seemed like he simply got along better with girls and just played along with them because he wanted to be friends, but over the course of time, it became obvious that it was more than just him playing along. To his classmates, at the very least.

The older he got, the less accepted this became. He was one of the girls, yet he was a boy. He acted like the girls, he only talked with the girls. To young children, everything is the same and childish innocence prevents you from seeing anything more than someone you liked or someone you didn't like.

But, as he and his friends became older, their prejudices started to form. Minori was a weird thing, he shouldn't be around girls that much. He felt the same emotions towards boys that girls did, and that was wrong. Disgusting. Disturbing. To his face, they acted the same, but behind his back, they all discussed how much of a creepy thing he was.

With one exception. A young girl, Hana, always stayed by his side.

No matter how much his classmates spoke about him, this best friend simply wouldn't let his hand go. She slowly helped him realise his own emotions, she helped him whenever he got depressed. Slowly, she became his pillar. He had forgotten how to stand on two feet, and became completely reliant on her to stand on his own two feet, to tell truth from fiction.

And then she left.

Without a word, the day after his thirteenth birthday, she disappeared. She had moved away without telling anyone. She had broken all forms of contact.

It was heartbreaking, and he fell into despair once again. The one person he could be himself around...

Thinking about it like that made him realise something important. This person. 'Minori', it wasn't what he wanted to be. It was never what he wanted to be. It simply wasn't what he was. Even if he wasn't born that way, he was just like the girls around him.

He wasn't the young boy 'Minori'. Even if he wasn't physically one yet, he was a girl. The name came to him naturally. If her best friend was a full flower, she would bloom up into one.

Saki (咲)

She couldn't show her true self around her family, her friends... her anything. She switched schools a number of times- first, going from middle to high school. She kept her feminine qualities hidden deep within her heart. She simply projected the most 'simple' popular guy personality she could think of. Silent, snarky, tough.

It worked.

Instead of being disliked for her feminine attitude, she was praised for simply being the cool kid in class. And this time, it was all real. She knew it. Her ability to detect 'lies' had started to surface, and her ability to speak the absolute truth followed her, as long as the ability to grant people the ability to speak in it at least for a short while.

It felt kinda nice.

Until, at the end of his first year, she noticed something. There was a boy in the next class over. Being harassed for similar reasons and in similar ways Saki was harassed in the past.

Well, she kinda snapped, and her third ability surfaced.

Every person has their dark secrets. Every person has their things they don't want to admit.

'You pick on insecure people because you're a closet homosexual'. 'You're a sad child that bullies because you got bullied in elementary school'. 'You have no confidence of your own to speak of and you just go along with whatever because you want to be popular'. 'You had a crush on your sister'. 'You caused someone to die in an accident'. 'You don't even like these people, you hate how they pretend they're your friends'.

The painful blue truth shifted into an absolute red. While, after a while, their hatred scattered among one another, at first...

Well, Saki became their prime target. And, as a fragile, young, effeminate boy, it wasn't too hard to beat her into the ground. For a very short while, she became their prime target...

Until the truths that were spread between them shifted their focus to each other.

The power of truth over lies. It's a powerful thing. One she would use as much as possible. She would start testing her limits, starting to play various sorts of games that involve bluffing and lies. Chess, poker, mahjong- everything. It's hard not to win if you can simply 'feel' the intention of any simple move.

Midway through the second year, she transferred to a different school. There was a small accident revolving the offensive use of her absolute truth, but it luckily didn't end up with anyone getting hurt. Or dead, for that matters.

Now, this is her second year at Hyakuji and her third year in high school. What does the future have in store for the confused girl...?
