Downtown Hyakuji - Gust Family Restaurant 11:30 (AM) - Saturday The Gust Family Restaurant, a family restaurant franchise across Japan that you would see in a lot of places. It was a reasonably spacious restaurant, with quite a handful of staff to attend it. Given how busy it was, it was quite surprisingly that a restaurant like this would have trouble catching people who tried to runaway without paying. It was just before noon, and the restaurant was quite busy with families stopping to have lunch with their children. At the area where customers would wait to be seated, there was a relatively easy to spot frustrated man in a uniform. He had a small name plate that had "Manager" written on, and below that, the name "Taro Yamada" written on it. Needless to say he was waiting for the Bracers who had accepted the request to arrive, while at the same time, was on the watch for a certain Dine and Dasher... The Bracers who had taken the request would have been told to see the manager at the Gust Family Restaurant, while the new member, Youhei, would have been informed he would need to take a test, and would have been given the date and location. Ryou, on the other hand, would be the one in charge of assessing Youhei, and leading the group of three which included himself, Youhei, and Izumi. Whether they met at a pre-decided location, or at the Gust Family Restaurant was up to them. Edited by Mayu Akabane, Jan 20 2014, 09:11 PM.

There are no miracles.
|
Bowls upon bowls of indeterminable scraps and bones flew into the air of the relatively clustered restaurant, conveniently, if not deliberately, piling upon a stack of their used and recently deceased fallen brethren. Near a particular table on the far side of the wall, innocent bystanders watched in complete awe as what could only be described as a beast of men continued onwards with the genocide of various curries, rice and other miscellaneous foods. The cluttering of cutlery meeting the ceramic surfaces served as the battle cries and screams of warfare in the ensuing endless struggle between mouth and food; the audio manifestation of pure destruction, desolation and gluttony. "Coo ay gert anudder one of theshhe?" The voice between the mountain of bowls and valleys of dishes called outwards, it's passage of sound almost garbled beneath all the incoming food, water and condiments. There was no virtual end in sight. At least, not until all the gourmet items met their fated ends, wiped from the very existence of the world. After a brief moment, a pair of feet met the face of the now-crowded table, causing the empty dishes to clang in response. "That was the best meal I had in weeks!" Letting out a sigh of resignation, the face of an adolescent peeked from under the garbage, giving into the euphoria, elation and gut feeling of all the food sitting inside his now stomach. He rubbed it's surface for a moment, looking as if there were no such thing as poverty, illness and world hunger. Who in their right mind would go to a restaurant without eating anyways? "This Hyakuji place is definitely not too bad," Speaking from a person who hadn't seen civilization in quite some time, this was actually frighteningly the case. To be honest, he still had yet to actually arrive at school the entire semester - but there were far too many places to go, and far too many things to see. "That adds another detour," The boy smiled confidently with pride, especially after he just decided not to go to school today. He looked over to the man on the table beside him, staring as the hands of his watch ticked ever so slowly. Clearly, he wasn't one to exactly carry a watch with him. Clicking his tongue slightly, Youhei leaned back on his chair, causing it to teeter upon it's hind legs, balancing with the forces of gravity and his own. Was he early? Was that even possible? "...Those guys aren't here yet, huh?" Youhei cupped the back of his head between two palms, before throwing his gaze upwards to the ceiling complacently. Unlike the other Bracers, he was merely told that he was to take some kind of test, though it was not mentioned what that particularly pertained to. Although he could stay like this for awhile, it definitely wasn't the most enjoyable thing ever. Edited by MegaBreak, Jan 20 2014, 11:19 PM.

"Holy crap, that guy can really eat..." A certain Ordinary Magician came from right besides the manager's ear. Spooky. Or he just appeared from right out of nowhere like a ghost. Which is actually surprising considering his usually over-the-top and flamboyant behavior, not to mention with this many people in the restaurant it's a surprise he haven't gotten attentions directed towards him yet. He's also on his flying broom. ...That dirty broom really shouldn't be allowed in the restaurant. "Oh, hello by the way!" He said, only just greeting the manager as though he did not scare anyone by just appearing out of nowhere at all. "Kirisame Izumi, the Ordinary Magician of the Bracer Guild at your service!" His introduction had sparkles in it. |

Ryou walked into the restaurant, immediately looking around for the manager and the new person he was supposed to evaluate. The kitsune had signed up for this task as soon as it came to the board, needing something to do and wanting a little bit of extra money to go along with it. Of course, it helped that the request was from a restaurant looking to track down a dine and dasher, a phrase that Ryou quickly learned meant 'someone who buys food and doesn't pay for it'. Considering Ryou worked part-time for a family-owned restaurant himself, the idea that someone might try that at the ramen house was enough for him to spend his day off out here, tracking the thief down. Being named leader of the team by Valestin wasn't something he'd expected, but as he thought about it, it was only right that she made it that way. He was, after all, the oldest out of all of them. He had the most experience out of any of them, and had restaurant experience to boot. So to that end, the fox was feeling particularly smug as he walked into the Gust Family Restaurant. Until he saw Izumi hovering in the air just over the manager's ear. "What are you doing--get down from there! People are eating!" said Ryou, stepping forward and trying to grab Izumi from his perch. Really, who flew around a restaurant? The ceilings weren't even that high! And--was that that new member Youhei over there stuffing his face? Ryou sincerely hoped that he was going to pay for that. He waved Youhei over, and turned towards the manager, frowning slightly as he read the name card. Taro Yamada. The guy they were supposed to meet. "Sorry about him," said Ryou, jerking a thumb at Izumi. "I'm Katou Ryou, team leader for today." Of course Ryou was going to introduce himself as that. "You needed help catching a food thief?" That was what this was all about in the end, right? Making money and making a food thief pay. Not that he wasn't a food thief himself some of the time. No, of course not. The look of despair that crossed the manager's face when he saw who had been sent to deal with the problem was probably a priceless moment. Sadly, he was desperate, and as this questionable group was better than nothing. His expectations weren't high, but at least if they failed, he wouldn't need to give them any reward... Although, hopefully they would catch the thief... Expectations are low, however. I mean, that one guy was sparkling. He was also on a broom. Then there was that guy who ate too much. Finally, a fox... man...? Well... Here goes nothing... "...Thank you for taking my request..." He wasn't thankful at all. He was just being polite. "For the past six months, we have had someone come in everyday, and leave without paying! We have done everything in our power to keep an eye on every customer, but it is as if nobody notices nobody notices when he leaves... He also leaves a notice behind with nonsense written on it. He owes our restaurant over 750,000 yen already!" No wonder they are so desperate to catch the thief... That is a lot of money to lose to one person. Clearly this person comes to eat an entire day worth of food. But wait a second, doesn't that mean the Bracers will have to spend the entire day waiting for this person to show up...? "He comes in around noon everyday... The problem is, a lot of people do for lunch. We have tried checking to see if the same person comes everyday, but there is nobody who has come for six straight months everyday... We would say it was different people doing it, but how they leave the restaurant without anyone noticing makes us think it is the same person with different disguises." This sounds very complicated. So what does he want the Bracers to do? "I want you three to guard all the exits out of this restaurant. The front entrance that customers use is by the till, so you will be able to see who pays, and who doesn't. There are two other entrances, a staff entrance, and one we use for deliveries. The deliveries one is usually locked when not in use, but we can't be too careful." With that, the Bracers would be expected to work out which door to guard themselves. Whether the Bracers left it down to their leader to decide which door to guard, or whether each member would just go to whatever door they felt like guarding was down to them. "SEVEN HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND?!" Of all the things that he could be paying attention to, that was the only thing that got through his head, and he could pay no more attention to anything else after that as he was more absorbed in imagining what could be spent with that much money. "Are you serious, seven hundred and fifty... oh god I could actually buy a shop with that... or maybe I could renovate the lab... or or I could get some of those books Alice sold to the museum or..." Let's just say that he didn't even notice that Ryou had pulled him off his broom to the floor. Duhuhu. Okay, it's decided, he's going to give this mission his fullest and undivided attention and responsibility! The thief will not escape this time, even if he has to watch over the restaurant from up above like a hawk for the entire day! "Not to worry Mister Restaurant Owner, you can be sure to trust us!" He said excitedly, patting the guy's shoulder and sparkling with charisma. "Now, all we need to do is discuss our payment..." YOU DON'T GET PAID FOR A BRACER MISSION DAMMIT! |

Ryou's eyes widened at the amount of money the manager gave, his hand loosening around Izumi's collar from his shock. Seven hundred fifty thousand?! Even with his limited understanding of human money, he could tell that that was a lot. With that much money--well, he wasn't sure what he would do, but it would involve food! And probably some form of fried tofu... He shook his head, putting the thought out of his mind. He couldn't get distracted now. He was team leader after all, and there was a job to be done. Ryou frowned, lightly cuffing Izumi across the back of the head when he mentioned money. "We don't get paid for individual missions," he said, which was his way of telling Izumi to shut up and stop embarrassing "We'll take care of it," he told the manager, already thinking of ways to track the thief. Scent would be the best way for him to track them, but if this restaurant really did have that many people at once, then it would be hard to isolate a single scent. It would be different if he had multiple days with which to stake out the restaurant--he could even wear a different disguise each time--but they were doing all of this in one day. "Do you know what the thief likes to order?" he asked. If there was 750,000 yen missing, there was a good chance that they at least knew what the thief was ordering. Maybe he had a favorite dish or something like that. Yeah, like they would be so lucky. But it was worth a shot anyway. He turned towards Izumi, thinking over the three entrances. "Alright," he said, "This is what we'll do. Izumi, you go guard the staff entrance. Newbie," he glanced at Youhei. "You take the deliveries one." From the sound of it, the delivery entrance wasn't that used, so Ryou didn't really think the thief would come through there, but you never knew. "I'll stay up here and keep watch." As he spoke, his fox ears and tail faded, shrinking back into his body, his appearance changing so he looked like a normal, human version of himself. It made sense for Ryou to take the front entrance. After all, he could pick out the thief by scent. It wasn't like he was trying to take the glory for himself. No, it wasn't that at all. |

As Youhei spent time virtually lazing around in his seat, the sound of something interesting finally reached his ears. Averting his gaze to the entrance, the boy couldn't help but let a smile escape his lips. Those were definitely the guys he was waiting for. A boy riding on a broomstick and another one. At first, they seemed like your typical ordinary folk, but even he could see something was quite different about them, setting them apart from the rest of the people. Of course, that was obviously besides the floating broomstick. Somewhat half inspecting them from afar, Youhei let a wooden toothpick rest between the lapses of his lips, twiddling up and down in a methodical manner. Although he was kind of expecting masked heroes, enormous weaponry and huge biceps, he supposed this wasn't half bad either. Well, at the very least, they looked like fun to hang around. "Finally!" The boy shouted outwards to them with a smile, cupping the sound of his voice with a hand. Despite being on the other side of the noisy restaurant room, the words spoken by Ryou, Izumi and the manager reached him without fail. Not without fail even, but easily. "Took you guys long enough," Youhei smiled to himself in complete bliss, once again arranging his hands behind his head and tipping on the very edge of the chair's leg. Hearing the game plan was already causing him to become more and more restless. "And I'm Hayakawa Youhei," With a strong thumb digging into his chest, the boy introduced himself with gusto and heart. Although his voice was clouded by the ocean of voices and clattering of a bustling, crowded eatery, Youhei's words were generally hard to miss. "So this is our crew, huh?" Yes, he was definitely getting pumped. That was until the latter part of the plan. "T-the delivery entrance?!" Youhei almost jumped out his seat, nearly flipping the stacks of empty dishes standing tall on his table. "Come on, not even cockroaches use that exit!" The boy could only imagine himself in a tiny room talking to a bunch of dust bunnies and a wall. From his previous experiences, they weren't exactly the best conversationalists. A look of horror came over him as his face seemed to warp and melt similar to the man depicted in The Scream. As Ryou stole a glance towards him, Youhei returned it with a fiery stare of determination. He couldn't help but think he was being belittled, or at the very least, judged in some form or another. "Just you wait," Stepping on the edge of his skateboard, Youhei flipped it upwards, causing it to perform a couple somersaults in the air before catching it in the palm of his right hand. With a resolve as firm as steel and determination as sharp as a razor's edge, the boy stood from his seat, a finger pointing towards Ryou. There was no way he was going to fail this test. "I'll catch this guy for sure!" |

Thankfully for everyone, Ryou pulled Izumi away from the Manager as he tried to talk about payment. He also did what any good leader would do, and assign everyone their roles. Of course, the Manager didn't hold any high expectations for the Bracer Guild, especially after seeing who had been sent to deal with the problem, but alas, anything is better than nothing... Once each of the Bracers arrived at their post, they would be there for at least an hour until they would suddenly hear a shout from one of the waiters as a group of restaurant staff gathered around an empty table. "He's been here again... He's even left that ridiculous note that he always leaves." In other words, the thief had already left the building, and despite how alert the Bracers may have been, none of them would have noticed anything unusual at any of the exits. The staff and delivery exits were completely silent for the entire duration, and from what Ryou would be able to recall, everyone had paid before leaving. "Hey, there are two notes this time... This one is for those guys you hired." The waiter handed a letter to the Manager, who read the front, before approaching Ryou, who appeared to be the leader of the group. "It looks like the thief addressed a letter especially to you guys." As the Manager said, Ryou would find that the letter had "To the Bracer Guild" written on the front of it, and was clearly addressed to them. Somehow or another, the thief was aware that the restaurant requested assistance from the Bracer Guild. Once Ryou opened the envelope, he would find a strange card with a B on along with a handwritten letter. ![]()

Well I suppose he's saved since he kinda slept thirty minutes into the watch. I mean come on, keeping watch is just so boring. Though at the very least he didn't get the delivery entrance which is far more boring than the staff entrance. Plus he got to play with the waitresses (all the while making the customers mad at him for keeping their orders on hold). Well, never mind that, it appears that their prey for today has slipped from under their grasp! "This little bastard is as slippery as a snake apparently!" Why the hell does he sound so proud and excited about a thief they were supposed to capture escaping their watch, shouldn't he be disappointed or angry? Then again he is kind of a thief himself, so I guess... mutual thievery understanding and feelings? He is so weird. Then again he could probably just see this as a challenge! Which it is, so it's even better! "Gimme that!" The Ordinary Magician said as he snatched the fancy looking card from Ryou and began inspecting it himself. ... "It looks fancy! It also has a B on it!" Brilliant observation Detective Kirisame, you are truly a genius! "It's also probably telling us to go to a fountain at Izanagi Garden!" Hah, not only did he deduce what this card is, he also figured out where they could catch the thief! "Well, what are we waiting for, let's go then!" Without further ado he bolted off, throwing his broom into the air before leaping onto it, and in one brilliant sparkling swoop he zoomed out of the restaurant through the front door and disappeared from view! While leaving everyone behind in comet dust. ... And then he came back. "...So where is this Izanagi Garden...?" It sounds like something you could find at some rich people's place, I dunno... |

"You've got to be kidding me," said Ryou, when it became clear that the thief had struck again. How could that happen? He'd been watching so closely! The thief had to have gotten through one of the others! Izumi? Yes. That would work. He blamed Izumi. After all, it wasn't as though the thief had slipped his grasp. After all, it wasn't as though he had been standing guard in the same room as the thief the entire time... Nope. Clearly Izumi's fault. Or Youhei's. Or both. Whatever. They were both incompetent. Everyone was incompetent except for him! Ryou ran a hand through his hair, shooting the ordinary magician a glare as he picked up the note from the waiter. Before opening it, he raised it to his nose, trying to catch any remaining traces of the thief's scent. That damned thief wasn't getting past him a second time. If there was even a trace of scent left, Ryou would be able to track him, if he had to go full fox and sniff around in the streets for the scent. Forget dignity, this had become a battle of pride! Inspection done, he opened the letter, giving it a quick angry read. Then, he read it a second time, because he really hadn't been paying attention the first time. His frown deepened as he read the note. What was this, a riddle? Did the phantom thief think this was a game? His hands tightened around the letter. The thief clearly didn't know who he was dealing with. He was a kitsune, a master of games, pranks, and riddles! He almost laughed at the simplicity of the riddle. The thief's days were numbered! Of course, all of that was going on behind the scenes, and on the outside, Ryou stared at the letter with a deadpan expression for a few moments, before looking up, folding it, and turning towards Izumi. "He's obviously talking about the fountain in Izanai Park," he said. Okay, so maybe not obviously, but it wasn't as though Ryou had a better idea. "I say we go down there, find this key, and hunt him down." Only the ferocity of that last statement would hint at just how angry and embarrassed Ryou was underneath. |

SLAM. In the back corner of the restaurant, a frightening sound erupted from the delivery entrance's door as Youhei stumbled out from the tiny nook. "I could only count 493 cockroaches back there!" Behind him, several little specks of black and brown scurried along the walls as if on perfect cue, accompanying him on his not-so dynamic entrance. He approached nonchalantly towards the two, seemingly unaware of his dirtied, ragged clothing and the several insects making a playground of his slightly dusty bandana. "You know, they're actually pretty funny little guys," Instead of needlessly fretting over not be able to catch the thief, Youhei smiled broadly, letting a certain insect run in repetitive circles upon his fingers. He had just tamed a circus of cockroaches. And after saying that, he still looked ready and fully primed for action. Unlike the other two, it didn't seem like he was too bummed out about not being able to find this "thief", surprisingly. Or maybe he just forgot. The boy had already heard roughly what all the hub-bub was about, and only sat up upon one of the empty tables, slamming his skateboard's wheels on top of it casually. As Ryou and Izumi were all exhibiting their surprise and perhaps rage, Youhei only listened in half-heartedly. "Still, shouldn't we cut him some slack?" Youhei sighed with a carefree air about him, looking at both Ryou and Izumi. He started doing several leg stretches on the table. "Able to pull something off like that...this guy clearly isn't some third-rate punk," With a complicated look on his face, Youhei seemed to wonder, think, and imagine what kind of person would be capable of such a feat. A ninja? Magician? Ghost? Or maybe a master of disguise? ...He couldn't really come up with anything useful at this point. The more he thought about it, the dizzier it made him. He should've known this was going to be more complicated than a simple hunt, after all. But that was what made it exciting. "I'm not saying I'm going to give up though!" He clarified, already re-emerging with an intense look on his face. "This sounds like it's going to be fun," As he said that, the boy jumped off the table, skateboard clenched to his side. Giving both Ryou and Izumi an amiable and energetic smile, Youhei dropped the skateboard onto the ground with a clatter, before looking back towards them. "So I guess this is the real mission start." |

The Manager really had no words for this group. They were like something out of a manga. The one serious guy who was angry. The happy-go-lucky kid who liked to play with cockroaches. Finally, the carefree magician who was more likely to be a thief than stop a thief. It was a terrible idea hiring them, wasn't it...? At least the thief gave the group a reason to leave the restaurant... The next he would see of them was probably when they failed to catch the thief, or at least, that is what the manager expected at this point. He had already given up all hope of any success at this point... "I guess now that he has been, we don't need to be as alert... I will leave the letter to your group. If you have any success, I will be working all day today, so you may return whenever the restaurant is open." Not that he expected the group to have any success... So now the group of three were left to their own devices. They were free to split up, or work together to solve the riddle left behind by the man who claimed to be the thief. Clearly, their goals were to go to certain locations and collect keys. Edited by Mayu Akabane, Feb 3 2014, 09:50 PM.

Let's assume they have actually already started, and since Ryou was the leader here Izumi had no choice but to follow him to Izanai Park. That and he himself has no idea where to go. Of course, his first main idea is to just fly around the area above the skyscrapers on his broom, kind of acting like a birds eye view for the whole group. However one thing he didn't quite anticipate here is... well. IT'S KINDA HARD TO SEE WHAT'S GOING ON DOWN THERE FROM WAY UP HERE. "Well, that was kinda pointless..." The Ordinary Magician sighed in dejection as he hovered back down to ground level to join the other two back at the park. "You two found anything?" |

While Izumi was flying around, trying to see what he could spot from the air, Ryou was pacing around Kyougen Fountain, trying to pick up the phantom thief's scent while simultaneously looking for anything that could be a clue. It was only now that he was on the ground that he allowed himself to feel doubt for his decision to bring them out here. Alright, sure, the last few lines of the clue sounded like they referred to a fountain, but they could have been something else, maybe. And Izanagi sounded a lot like Izanai and a park was kind of like a garden, but it was also possible that this was some obscure reference to Japanese mythology, which he really ought to know, being a kitsune and all, but he'd never really listened to the shrine foxes when they tried to lecture him anyway, and it wasn't like he was around for that time, and-- Well, the point of the matter was, he wasn't entirely sure. But he had dragged Youhei and Izumi all the way out here, and he was the leader, so he couldn't allow himself to show them that he was actually uncertain that he was right. So when Izumi came flying back down asking if he had spotted anything, Ryou drew himself up to his full height, shaking his head and trying to look authoritative. "Nothing yet," he said, frowning. He glanced at Youhei. "What about you?" he asked. He hadn't forgotten that he was supposed to be observing Youhei, after all. Just because Ryou was uncertain, he wasn't going to make it easy for Youhei to get into the Bracers. |
