Rubbing his eyes the young boy with a long pale blue scarf yawned. He had followed the note and finally made it to the waterfall they were supposed to have met the teacher at. All they had to see though was a turtle man and a robot girl. It wasn't his most ideal evening but it was his most entertaining. He didn't say anything throughout the entire conversation. There wasn't a need for it. In fact, he wasn't too sure why he was taking this class. His whole purpose at this school was to find a way to prove to his parents that he wasn't their trophy child anymore and that he wasn't ruined. Bringing a gloved hand up into the air he cleared his throat to finally speak. "Hey everyone I think there's a simple thing that we can do here. Just shut up and let the turtle man and his daughter speak. Its best to know before we leap into shadows." Lowering his hand and coughing, it sure was really cold out here today. "Oh, and if the ice needs melted, it's safer to use the power of the sun. And if anyone knew me they'd know that was easy peasy, so let the strange people speak yes?" Lella stuck his hands in his pockets and put on his biggest smile. He was hoping that no one was in too much of a rush to have forgotten that this was still a lesson. Or that's what the boy assumed, it was an after school lesson, right? |

'...She's still not here.' That has been the only thought in the boy's head for the past five minutes. His eyes wandered along with his mind, darting about every time a noise was heard. He had hoped that she was just somewhat late, but after a while it was obvious something was happening that led to her being preoccupied. Ethan honestly felt like running away at that point. After all, his sole friend and safety net was gone and he was currently facing a...strange occurrence with the kappa and his daughter. '...no, can't think like that. Can't just do nothing.' The boy shook his head and tried to fill it with positive thoughts. After coming up with zero positive thoughts, he tried to fill it with somewhat neutral ones instead. One such thought held a rather strong persistence. 'I wonder what they want? The general assumption seems to be melting the ice...but they have yet to actually confirm that. Mother always said to always double check everything with everyone.' The boy quickly walked up to the father-daughter pair and held up a little note he wrote: [Excuse me, but what do you two need help with exactly?] Edited by JSQ, Jan 7 2014, 11:02 PM.

"Ah, wait, actually-" CRACK!! The two kappas unwittingly flinched as Eva's hydraulic fist drove through the ice and... well, she punched into the ice. Though aside from the small cracks that resulted from the impact and pieces of ice scattered everywhere just as Xie had predicted... nothing else happened. "Er... yeah, right, see... Shun kind of tried that already..." Oh. ...Well why couldn't they have said so earlier?! "Well you guys started acting before we could say anything!" Okay, fair point I guess. But never mind the student's rashness, continue explaining. In the meantime the man-Kappa would like to stay very close to Ryou since he's got fire and it is warm and really comfortable. Though he is being very uncomfortably close to the kitsune. But in any case, "Right, see, Shun himself already tried everything. He tried burning it..." The kappa girl gave a cursory glance to Ryou, "Breaking it..." And another to Eva herself, "He even tried talking to it but, well..." Putting aside the last part, she turned to point at the spot where Eva had decided to punch right through the ice. But there is something odd about that. Namely... there wasn't any crack anywhere on the frozen river at all. The whole river surface was as smooth as a mirror as though not a single person had even stepped on it at all... "Yeah, that's definitely not natural, is it?" The kappa girl said with a sigh, the robot arms doing complementary gestures just to emphasize her exasperation. Though one of them took the note from Ethan for her to read, which only doubled her annoyance. "It's really troublesome since I have all my work in there... I really have to finish that Noble Prize project by this week!" "And my dinner is down there too," Man-kappa decided to randomly give his own reason, while still comfortably getting warm and uncomfortably close to Ryou. I guess that answers the question whether or not they actually live down there despite looking, ...well, not-kappa at all. "What's worse is we don't even know what's going on to cause this, so we don't know what to actually do..." She said, the robot hand handing back the note to Ethan. "Well, one thing's for sure, no one will have to sell any soul for this lesson~" ...Well for crying out loud, why the hell are you late?! "Hey, come on, don't get mad! I'm doing my part of the research too you know!" Oh is he now? It doesn't seem like it considering he's yawning really widely the moment he came out of the snowy bush in his usual green garb and beret with snow everywhere on him. "Oh god that was a good nap- Wait Eva, you don't take this class, do you? ...Anyway, I've figured it out! Though I've decided to make today's work as a lesson so instead I'll be asking you guys instead. Bonus mark for those who can answer!" ...Wait, so you mean you don't actually have anything figured out and decided to leave the thinking to the students?! "What do you guys know about Yuki-Onna, Snow Woman?" ...His expression does seem to be quite serious. And... oddly enough, if anyone bothered to pay attention, that seemed to catch the man-kappa's attention as well. |

With reflexes quicker than he imagined a girl had attemtped to punch the ice. He braced for the shattering explosion that might result or the shards that could fly around anywhere but nothing. There was no reaction at all. Opening his squinted eyes and lowering his arms Lella gasped. Instead of something happening at all nothing happened at all. Wasn't ice supposed to crack when hit? Or did the rules of physics no longer apply here. There was something odd and also something vaguely familiar about this so called 'ice' that didn't react. Hadn't he heard about some woman in the ice before? It didn't matter because finally the kappa and the girl began to speak. It had first appeared to Lella that the two beings weren't really here because they requested help but instead just saw a group of children and wanted some fun and laughs. At least the photomancer could calm down now, he wasn't being played a fool. Taking a breath he at least relaxed when the teacher finally showed his face. He knew all along that the teacher would appear. 'Right, just act cool and collected and people will accept you right? Heh heh, i'm a horrible lier!' was all he could think about though. Lella's eyes widened at the name though. The snow woman, was she the same rumored lady? Was she behind the rumor he had wanted to figure out? No, it couldn't be the same connection. "I can't say I know anything about her, is she famous?" Of course she was you idiot! Lella almost slammed himself into a tree or rock for that question. The boy decided it was probably better to keep his ideas to himself for this lesson thing. Maybe then they could get some answers instead of more questions. |

"Congratulations," said Ryou in retort to Heleth. "Now all the students know you're a bitch." His pyromancy wasn't a secret. He didn't understand why she needed to be so testy about it, demon from the netherworld that she was. He was a fox, of course he should have foxfire. And he wasn't trying to show off--he was trying to help a fellow youkai, if that was what they were, out. Underworld denizens had nothing to do with youkai affairs. They ought to stay out of it. The thought occurred to him that thinking that way meant that he had unconsciously decided to side with Shun on this, and that made him slightly uncomfortable. And speaking of uncomfortable, that kappa was really uncomfortably close. ...Like really close. Ryou took a step back from the man, although he did give Heleth a triumphant look and a smirk when the man mentioned that breaking the ice was what he wanted and that, yes, they did live behind the waterfall. Youkai knew youkai--and the more the man talked, the more Ryou was certain that they were at least some part kappa--normal humans, as far as he knew, did not decide to live underwater. Unfortunately, she did say that fire wouldn't work. Ryou closed his hand, extinguishing the fireball. Sorry, kappa man. And speaking of youkai... He turned towards Shun as the dragon youkai approached, listening to the question. He folded his arms. "They're youkai," he said. "Ice women. They dress all in white and walk around when it snows. And they trap travelers in snowstorms and freeze them solid sometimes. I met one, maybe fifty...sixty years ago." It all made sense now. Ryou's eyes moved towards the waterfall. "Did one of them do this?" he asked. He didn't mention that the yuki-onna he'd met half a century ago had been one that he and Kuro were harassing, with Kuro distracting her while he melted her snow house, and that she had been really pissed off. They'd been frozen for days after that. He really hoped this wasn't the same one. Edited by Chizu, Jan 1 2014, 11:33 PM.

"Tch" Heleth clearly didn't like the direct insult she received. In the end she was wrong, they really needed to remove the ice from the waterfall and the river, but it was twice more obvious fire wasn't the right way. "It doesn't change the fact that your fire is useless in this situation. Your boast was as useless as your power in this situation." Aya looked as another student with super-strenght began stomping the ice to no avail. The white haired girl wondered what could turn the river and the waterfall into indestructable crystals. Her mental question found an answer when their teacher finally decided to show up. His question about what they know about Yuki-Onna gave her the answer she needed. Aya wasn't very practical of japanese folklore, but those were a rather common occurrence in anime and videogame for her to at least know they were female youkai related to winter, cold and ice. She didn't know much more than that though, so she remained silent, waiting for further explainations. Beside them, Heleth was simply silently staring to the new 'mortal enemy' she just gained, her dual layered eyes studying him. |

“… I see.” Eva didn’t even bat an eye at the reactions her classmates gave her, but was mildly surprised when her super powered punch had little effect on the ice. She was even more surprised when the ice started to mend itself, and soon it appeared as if she hadn’t done anything at all. Nope, not natural at all. Maybe she should change classes and join Supernatural Studies more, everlasting and self-repairing ice does seem more interesting. The gynoid’s sensors picked up Shun’s approach and returned to the shore to meet the dragon youkai, and to deliver a message. “Sophia Antistita regrets that she cannot attend today’s lesson due to personal reasons and asked me to attend in her stead. I trust that is acceptable sensei?” Ah so that’s why she was here instead of Sophia. This shouldn’t cause any problems, right? Now that the message was delivered Eva turned her focus to Shun’s question, which she easily found the answer to online. “The Yuki Onna, or snow woman, is said to be the spirit of someone who perished in the snow. They often appear as pale beautiful women with long black hair and blue lips, though they are known to transform into a cloud of snow. Traditionally they are malicious beings, and tend to kill travelers lost in snowstorms. Sometimes they are more vampiric in nature, and will drain her victim’s life force through a kiss or even sexual acts.” Her gaze fell upon Shun. “Did you have a vision of the Yuki Onna whilst you slept Shun-sensei?” Even if the others didn’t hear him say anything about napping, there was no escaping the gynoid’s sensors. His expression didn’t escape her either, perhaps there was more to this after all. |

"Yuki...Onna..." Evray repeated the foreign name to himself, a ponderous air filling his eyes breifly. "No, I can't say I had." Unsurprisingly, the boy didn't seem like the type to have an especially broad knowledge about things; particularly Japanese folklore. How about Xie? "Don't bother me with something like that," the Alchemist shot at the nonexistent query. "I have more worthwhile projects than chasing frozen ghosts or snow spirits." Well, that was understandable too, Xie's expertise lie within magic and alchemy. He wouldn't know a thing about, as he so eloquently put it, frozen ghosts or snow spirits either. "So, I'm guessing we find this woman and make her melt this river, right?' "How about we ask her nicely?' |

[Yuki-Onna: Literal translation "snow woman." Alternate Names: Yuki-musume, Yuki-joro, Yuki-onba. Yuki-onna appear as beautiful women in snowy, cold, or mountainous regions, with black hair, near translucent skin, and blue lips. Their powers typically revolve around cold and snow, ranging from stealing body warmth in a near vampiric or succubus fashion, freezing a person with a single glance, to spontaneous generation of ice or snow. There are several different tales and legends attributed to them. Some incarnations sleep with lone travelers to steal valuable body warmth. Others will simply make them get lost during their travels to freeze to death or even just push them off cliffs. It is also said that they will kill travelers by tricking them into touching them or a baby they hold in their hands. Some have been known to target young children in order to eat their livers. More benevolent Yuki-onna will either lead the victims to safety, possibly even sleep with them, or simply leave them alone; the more wicked ones will lead them astray to begin with, kill them with the methods described above, or use them. A particularly well known tale by Lafcadio Hearn involved her killing a man but sparing the life of his young apprentice due to his youth and beauty, on the condition he never says what has happened. Later on the boy married a woman who bore him many children, approximately 10. After several years, the boy recounted his tale to his wife. However, the wife turned out to be the Yuki-Onna and would have killed him for breaking the promise, but she does not due to several factors, probably involving the fact that they had children, and instead leaves him forever.] When Ethan was done writing and handed the rather lengthy page of exposition to his teacher, he immediately ran behind a tree in the futile hope that it would protect him. 'A yuki-onna is very dangerous! And Sophia is not here! This is really bad! I could be frozen to death!' |

So nobody would need to exchange their soul in return to make the water flow again? Well, it meant less work for Weiss anyway. Plus, Nietzsche probably wouldn't be that generous. So Weiss went back to reading manga while sitting by the tree. Ironically, nobody seemed to care, and the only person who would have cared already left to file another complaint about Shun. Hurray freedom. Although, perhaps shockingly, Weiss did know some things about Yuki-onna, and she was about to shock the entire class with her precise, and detailed knowledge of Yuki-onna. Honestly, it would have been a surprise if the occult research department desired to recruit Weiss. "That girl who likes girls in Inu x Boku SS is a Yuki-onna." ...Or maybe not... |

"That girl who likes girls in Inu x Boku SS is a Yuki-onna." Weiss offered without batting a lash. "Oh god you're right." Yang followed with her lips creased into a frown. "Shun-sensei, are all Yuki-onna perverts like Nobara Yukinokouji?" Yang added with her arms crossed. "I mean what? Jen watches that show. I'm no otaku.. Geeze." Maybe they could tempt the Snow fairy into melting all this ice..... HAH forget that. Yang zipped her spray jacket up higher and dipped her chin into the collar, watching the class with a furrow in her well-groomed brows. |

"Good answer you three. Ryou and Ethan, remind me to add a mark to your finals. ...Actually none for you Ryou, don't talk like that in my class. None for you too Eva, I don't count looking things up on that Internet thing," See, he can be a responsible teacher too for making sure everyone gets graded fairly. ...Then again it was probably as payback for saying that he slept. Which he did, but hush, no one should know that even though they probably already did. "...Erm. Actually some of them might be perverts..." ...He actually gave a serious answer to Yang's question. But it's for a good reason, see. "Well, it's not like there's only one of them around," After all, people hear a lot of different version of the Yuki-Onna stories, who's to say those aren't just different Snow Women? What's probably worrying though, all of them seem to share the same trait of making the Snow Woman to be a dangerous youkai. "But not to worry!" He spoke out with a reassuring laugh at the hiding Ethan. "I'm a youkai, and so is Ryou here. A lot of youkai usually aren't tolerant of humans, but you can be assured she won't attack as long as we're with you. Probably," Is that supposed to be reassuring...? "Oh, yeah, we're gonna make her thaw the river. Preferably by negotiation, we don't want anyone to freeze until next week if we can help it," Well, looks like they've got their task for the day. And to those who knew nothing about Yuki-Onna, count this as your practical lesson and field trip to meet one in person. Since they're usually pretty elusive from humans like most youkai would be, don't go missing this rare chance! Oh, by the way, "Ryou, you've got good nose. Mind tracking down where she could probably be?" |

Lella took in all the answers and made a mental note to remember them all. He was here to learn and finding something he didn't know was something he wanted. Crossing his arms around his body he rubbed his sides to produce some warmth. If they were going to be out here he wanted to be ready for anything. He looked at the teacher and Ryou with suspicion. A creature of rare power and harsh behavior working with humans. Hadn't it just been said they don't like working with humans? Yet here two were teaching them and being in the mix with them. Lella's head was swimming with questions just building. The young boy was comforted though that they had some on their side. He wondered if this female Youkai would have a different appearance. He didn't even know what it looked like. "Hey, do all youkai look a like or can they take different forms?" Lella asked loudly so someone who knew more than him could answer. It was better to know than to just jump into something dangerous. Even his favorite video game character Link knew that. The young photomancer took a few steps closer to the frozen water. Crouching down to it he just stared at it. He was wondering if there was any chance that one of them could 'woo' the beast. A lot of the boys were very cute and even he had to admit he'd do anything for one of them. Shaking his head he looked over at the others. "And what does a Youka smell like if not like you two?" |

Ryou rolled his eyes at Shun's decision to not give him any points based on his reply to Heleth. Whatever. It was worth it. Besides, it wasn't like he actually cared about his grades. Unlike the other human students of this school, he wasn't going to graduate and then try to go to law school or medical school or something. And if he wanted to do something like that, well, he had several human lifetimes with which to go back to school and make a good impression. He was also a little bit annoyed at being so directly outed as a youkai. Alright, so maybe it wasn't a secret, and maybe he had been very obvious about it in earlier answers, but it was just the nature of the kitsune to want to be hidden around people, something a dragon obviously couldn't understand. Or maybe he was just looking for an excuse to be mad at Shun. Probably the latter. He frowned at Shun's assertion that the Yuki-Onna wouldn't attack them if there were youkai with them. He wasn't sure about that--youkai attacked each other all the time, probably even more than they attacked humans. There really wasn't much else to do when you lived for centuries but wage war every now and then. But Yuki-Onna were made of ice as a whole, so Ryou thought he was fine. Unless they were immune to fox fire. There were some that actually were. And this ice could resist flames which meant that that was probably the case here. Which meant if this Yuki-Onna wasn't the reasoning type, they would be in trouble. Probably best not to worry about that now though. He turned towards Shun, raising an eyebrow as the other youkai asked him to search for the Yuki-Onna's scent. Tentatively, he sniffed the air, and was suddenly overwhelmed by the powerful scent of ice and snow. Most of it was stuff he had already noticed earlier, the cold scent coming from the wall of ice, for example, but now that he knew what he was looking for, he thought he detected a faint scent beneath all of that, a distinct feminine undertone that he remembered from his youth. A Yuki-Onna had been here. Ryou focused on the scent, trying to track it into the forest, and there he stopped. It was too faint--in this form, his vulpine senses were impeded by the physical structure of a human nose. He could detect it, but not as well as he would like. In fox form, however... Ryou's frown deepened. If he transformed here, he would be able to track the Yuki-Onna, but he would also be vulnerable. In a large group, though, the others might be able to act before he was in danger. It was a gamble. Was he willing to take it? Oh, hell. Might as well. Ryou stepped forward, moving past Shun and towards the direction where he thought he smelled the scent. As he walked, he glanced at Lella, taking in his questions. "I'll let you answer this," he told Shun, speaking to the dragon as though they were equals, because he sure as hell wasn't going to call Shun 'sensei'. He faced the woods, and then, before the eyes of the group, began to transform, a light shimmering around him and obscuring his form as the general shape of him began to change. The light moved, concentrating on a point just over his neck, as he changed from his relatively human-like form to something else. Spoiler: click to toggle An adolescent male red fox, with a large pearl-like gem attached to a strip of cloth around his neck. Ryou pawed at the ground, testing out a form he hadn't used in a while, before looking back at Shun. He opened his mouth, letting out what sounded like a loud, high-pitched bark. Or at least that was what everyone else would hear. Shun would hear something different. "You better not let anything happen to this gem!" he told the youkai, fully aware that Shun would be able to understand him. He lifted his head, showing Shun the jewel around his neck. It galled him that he had to rely on a dragon for his own personal safety, but the hoshi-no-tama was not something he was willing to risk for the sake of his own personal pride. That done, Ryou turned away, sniffing the air and starting to walk in the direction of the scent. |

Ethan was, to put it mildly, extremely concerned with the overly calm demeanor of his teacher. After all they were facing an entity that could create ice and snow with a mere thought, freeze a man alive just to keep him, and give everyone a very bad case of hypothermia. However, he swallowed his fear and crept from out of the tree. He had to be brave, or at least not shaking in his boots behind some frozen flora. Furthermore, facing a person prone to fighting might not make for the best diplomatic approach. If there was one person standing nearby who looked weak and pitiful, maybe there might be enough of a pause to actually have a negotiation. So, the boy walked as confidently as he could, following his transformed classmate. Well, rather than walking confidently it was more like tiptoeing fearfully. |
