Character Name: Katou Ryou (Ryou Katou in Western format)
Gender: Male
Age: 141 (appears to be in his mid-late teens)
Height: 5’9”
Weight: 150 lbs.
Description or Image of Character Appearance:

The form above is a product of his shapeshifting magic. In his true form, Ryou looks more or less the same, but has a pair of fox ears on his head, the same red as his hair, and a single red tail. In his true form, Ryou also has slitted pupils, pointier canines, and clawed hands. His eyes glow faintly green. Under extremely stressful or terrifying situations, or when he’s tired, Ryou loses control of the illusion and reverts to his true form.

Occupation: Student
Grade Level: 1st Year

Powers/ Abilities:

Fox Form

As a kitsune, Ryou’s body is a little different from that of normal humans. His nails are sharp, like claws, and he can use them as weapons. The same is true of his teeth, although he generally doesn’t like to bite his opponents. His hearing and night vision are better than that of normal humans, and his sense of smell is markedly better, to the point that Ryou can distinguish people by scent.

He has enhanced reflexes and endurance, but not to an extreme. His reflexes are on par with a trained human martial artist, and his endurance allows him to take a beating, but only to a certain extent. He’s faster and stronger than an average human, but again, on par with a trained human fighter.

Illusion Magic--Shapeshifting

Like all kitsune, Ryou possesses the ability to create illusions. However, because of his youth and inexperience, at the moment he can only use this power to change his own form through shapeshifting. He normally uses it to hide his kitsune attributes from view or to revert back to a full fox form, which doesn't take much effort under normal circumstances, however, he can also use it to change his form to something other than his range of ‘natural’ appearances.

There are some limits to Ryou’s shapeshifting ability. He can only shapeshift into other humanoid beings, and he can’t copy attributes foreign to him such as wings. He cannot copy powers, only appearances. He can however, copy voices, at least in the beginning. Ryou can technically hold another person’s form for up to 10 posts (13 for people he knows well), however due to his inexperience, after a certain amount of time, the following things start happening:

(Note: The following is a guide. Ryou will not go above these limits until his next upgrade, but depending on the situation, he may actually go below them.)

  • 1-2 Posts (3 if familiar): The illusion is more or less perfect.

  • 3-5 Posts (7 if familiar): Ryou starts to lose control on some of the finer points of his illusion. While he can still hold up the form, it requires a lot of concentration, and if he lets up his concentration for a minute, his ears and tail start beginning to show. His fangs begin to elongate, and his more vulpine characteristics (slitted pupils, glowing eyes, claws) start to begin trying to appear. Holding the illusion consistently becomes more and more difficult.

  • 6-8 Posts (11 if familiar): More basic characteristics of the form start becoming more difficult to hold. Ryou might find himself reverting to his natural height or build. Eye color, hair length, and hair color all become more difficult to maintain and may shift periodically. The voice also begins to change. Maintaining the form at this time is still possible, but it becomes a little like playing ‘whack-a-mole’, trying to make corrections quickly enough before his actual form shows through. If the form is female, this is where things really start to fall apart.

*8 posts is the maximum amount of time that Ryou can wear a female form he is not familiar with.

  • 9-10 Posts (13 if familiar): Maintaining the form at this time requires absolute concentration, and because of this while Ryou will still hold on to some characteristics of the form he’s taken, by this point, he will normally have mostly reverted to his own form.

*12 posts is the longest time Ryou can wear a female form if he’s familiar with it.

Kitsunebi (Foxfire)

Like most kitsune, Ryou has the ability to use foxfire. At the moment, this manifests as a weak level of pyromancy. He has trouble manipulating existing flames, and can only create his own flames in the form of fireballs. He is immune to his own fire, although not to other people's flames, and can use those fireballs either as a weapon or make them hover over his shoulder as a light.

He can throw a fireball about the same range as someone might throw a projectile, meaning he can only throw at things that he can actually see. He has decent aim. He can create up to two fireballs at a time, one in each hand.

Equipment You Have:

  • Hoshi-no-tama (lit. 'star jewel'): A white pearl-like jewel that holds a portion of Ryou's power when he transforms. It's usually only visible when he's in his fox form, where it hangs around his neck like on a collar. In his human and kitsune forms, the jewel is incorporated into his body. In some traditions, kitsune are rendered powerless when their Hoshi no Tama are taken from them. Ryou refuses to confirm whether or not this is true.

Personality Description:
Ryou at first glance appears to be brash, aloof, spiteful, and even a little petty. A lot of that comes from the fact that he hates humans, and thoroughly resents being stuck in Hyakuji. He tends to see himself as part of a superior species, overlooking the fact that he's acting just as immature as the people he hates. That said, Ryou isn't a bad person exactly. He's very selective over who he likes, and likes very few people. He tends to be somewhat apathetic over the fate of people he doesn't like, however, if you earn his friendship or his trust, Ryou can be very loyal.

He's a fierce fighter and doesn't know when to quit, even when he probably should. That said, he does often resort to tricks when he fights (he almost never fights 'clean'). He tends to be brash and headstrong, and doesn't like inaction. While he isn't headstrong to the point where he won't consider strategy, he can be very headstrong about what he considers 'cowardice'. As a kitsune, he's a trickster by nature and while he doesn't often play pranks on people, finding it childish, he will play pranks on people he doesn't like.

He has a fear of dogs. While it isn't strong enough to send him running, Ryou does tend to get nervous or alert if there is a dog in the general vicinity, sometimes even enough to shift form. It's not helped by the fact that most dogs (there are exceptions) don't like him, seeing him as a fox rather than as a person.

Please do not ask him what he says. He doesn't like that.

Personal History:
In 1872, a fox was shot by an archer after breaking into a henhouse. The fox of his wound in the woods after getting away, the sight of the hunter the last thing on its mind. The last thing it felt was hunger, hatred, and a thirst for revenge.

That was how Ryou was born.

He lived nameless on that mountainside for most of his youth, with only a pair of Inari foxes that lived in a nearby shrine and one crow--a tengu--for company. The shrine familiars, a man with four tails and a woman with five--often tried to reach out to him, but Ryou wouldn't do more than accept the food they left out for him, running back into the forest to eat. He lived much like an animal for his first few decades of life, not doing much or speaking to people, until he met the tengu.

The tengu was a young youkai too, around his age. The two of them became friends over the course of a decade, becoming inseparable. It was the tengu, Kuro, who gave Ryou his name, commenting that the kitsune always appeared so distant. While Ryou was at first reluctant to accept the name, it soon grew on him, until he began to think of it as his own. He and Kuro would often go down to the village to play pranks on the humans living there, pranks that grew in malice as the years wore on. While they never actually killed anyone, some of those pranks, such as destroying a farmer's field or using foxfire to lead a young woman into the woods at night, were often devastating and dangerous. Ryou didn't care, seeing it as him getting back on the humans for their arrogance. Kuro thought much the same way, and the two fed off each other. Hikaru and Tsuki, the two kitsune who used to leave food for Ryou in his childhood often tried to get him to stop, but to no avail. This went on for almost a century until the day a human warrior cut Kuro down, killing him.

After his friend's death, Ryou was inconsolable. Try as she might, Tsuki, the female shrine guardian, could not get him to let go of his hatred or his anger, and all her attempts to console him fell on deaf ears for a few years until the day Ryou pushed her away, literally, and ran into the forest. She returned to the shrine, upset, only to notice smoke coming from the village a little while later. Ryou, in his grief and rage, had attacked the village, and was burning it down. She and her partner, Hikaru, managed to get to the village in time to save it, striking Ryou unconscious before he could hurt himself or any more people.

When Ryou next awoke, he found himself in the shrine's audience chamber, being tended to by Tsuki. The rage had faded from him by then, leaving nothing but emptiness in its wake, and when Tsuki told him what he'd done, he was surprised that he actually felt ashamed. He realized then, looking at himself, that he'd been living like an animal for the past few years, hiding in the forest and lashing out at whoever was unlucky to find themselves in his path. That was when he heard a voice from behind the curtain. Tsuki drew it back, and that was the first time Ryou encountered the Nine-tailed fox of the mountain.

He was the largest kitsune Ryou had ever seen, pure white, with a full set of nine tails. As insolent as he was, even Ryou was forced to respect that much power. The Kyuubi revealed himself to be a familiar of the Inari shrine, and told Ryou that the way he had acted wouldn't be tolerated. Ordinarily, because the village was under his protection, Ryou's life should have been forfeit, but because of his youth and because Tsuki had asked it, he would be spared on the condition that he live among humans and learn how to respect them. He could return to the mountain once he had passed that test, and if he hurt any more people out of cruelty, he would be killed.

To that end, Ryou was sent to Hyakuji.

Mashed Potatoes? The proof is in the pudding.
