Character Name: Jin Hayate
Gender: M
Age: 17
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 155 pounds.
Associated Music: For Crimson Air
Voice: Daisuke Ono

Description or Image of Character Appearance:

True appearance unknown. Appearance highly fluid due to mastery of illusions, and dislikes showing himself the same way twice. However, a few common themes and preferences are notable. Jin has a love of formal dress and almost always chooses to show himself as a "gentleman" figure. Accessories such as glasses and hats are common, verging on the flamboyant at times if he feels artistic. Jin also prefers white hair regardless of his apparent age, feeling that it expresses a "blank canvas" motif.

An example appearance:

Occupation: Student
Grade Level: Junior verging on Senior as the season concludes.
Powers/ Abilities:

Illusory Playback:

Anything Jin experiences can be "recorded" by his talent and "played back" at any later time. This does not mean he has a photographic memory, so he must keep an index of all his recordings. Visual information is manifested as illusions, same with sound. His (re)creations are intangible and thus incapable of interacting with anything save for themselves. Yes, he can make himself invisible with this by playing a recording of empty space over his position.

He is capable of turning his illusions to modest defense if necessary. Namely by producing deafening blasts of sound and blinding lights while he slips away. Theoretically he could weaponize the sound and lights into intense vibrations and lasers, but that's the stuff of seasonal upgrades in the future, not the present. And he has little intent to develop his talents that way anyhow, instead preferring to handle things differently.

What he prefers to do if forced into a confrontation is to play merciless mind games. It is extremely difficult to pin him down, as he can play visual recordings of himself all over the place while hiding his actual presence behind an illusion, letting him taunt freely while wandering away. His chosen form of warfare is psychological, but ultimately he cannot do any real physical harm, nor will he probably ever want to.

Vocal Synthesis:

Having heard thousands of voices over the course of his life, Jin is essentially capable of saying anything he wants through illusions in any voice of his choosing, though at times it can sound a little unnatural and off to a perceptive listener.

(Future Upgrade Tinkershop begins here)

Origin of Abilities and their Nature:

Jin is essentially a very weak reality warper, a sentient existential paradox. He is so much of a liar that he can distort perceptions of reality, or even weakly manipulate truth itself. As he increases in skill, he will be able to increasingly manipulate truth and lies themselves, distorting the nature of reality around him. He has no interest in direct combat, and thus will not likely ever develop purely offensive abilities. Jin is a paradox of sorts, in that his power seems to stem from nowhere at all. If one with the power to analyze a person did so to him, they would find that his abilities seem to have no origin whatsoever. They came from nowhere, not even within Jin himself. Jin doesn't know (nor especially care) about the origin of his abilities, and he at least claims that they've always been a part of him. If someone with the power to seal away or nullify abilities attempted to do so to Jin, they would find it impossible to do so, for his paradoxical nature eludes definition.

Jin may not even be human, he may not be named "Jin Hayate". He is uncertainty itself. Oddly, predicting his actions is still possible, contradicting his nature. Otherworldly beings, and even cosmic abominations of varying sorts that view the fabric of reality in a much different way from humans, will be able to perceive that Jin is most certainly probably not a human being, though not an abomination himself. Jin, fundamentally, cannot be defined nor categorized. He is a paradox, and nothing else can be said with certainty of him. Abilities that categorize, define, interpret, or specify the target will flat-out fail on Jin. Jin thinks he's most likely a very weird human, but given his refusal to show his 'true form', this cannot be confirmed.

On the subject of Jin's "true form", those able to perceive through his illusions and possibly see what he truly is are exposed to his true self: No One. Much like the concept of Schrodinger's Cat, merely attempting to identify Jin imposes an interference with his form. What results is that attempting to see the "real Jin" merely shows the image of the viewer, as if they were looking in a mirror. This can also happen if Jin is knocked unconscious and thus unable to sustain his illusions consciously, all those who look at him will see themselves. Ultimately, Jin has a very rare status: He cannot be correctly defined or identified by anything. He's not a Lovecraftian destroyer-of-sanity, but any idea of a "true form" literally does not apply to Jin. Strangely, he has noticed that he no longer remembers what his true identity is. This alarms him significantly.

Jin can be thought of as the ideological opposite of a concept or deity. There is no certainty about what he actually is, to the point where Jin himself doesn't have the slightest idea. This situation makes him unable to receive a Persona, incidentally, as that would require defining him. On the flip side, it also means he has no Shadow, as something that cannot be defined cannot have a denied aspect. Jin's un-identifiable nature cannot be separated into definable parts, essentially. The nature of Jin's existence is so bizarre and uncertain that it can't be said if he actually properly exists at all, at least in the same sense as anything else. He can be affected by conventional things, and is affected by them as a normal human would be, but conceptualization or definition remains impossible.

Suffice to say, those with advanced perceptions of reality may tend to view Jin as immensely disturbing. Or as simply amusing, an odd quirk that cannot be identified, but obviously isn't a threat to them. Jin is unknown even to higher consciousness.

False Reality:

Jin dictates a "persistent' illusion that functions without being fully specified by Jin, or even in his absence. It is actually adaptive, though not sentient, in that it preys on the deepest thoughts and emotions of those who experience the illusion. Thus, it can appear differently to other people viewing it at the same time. It also adapts itself to the preconceptions and beliefs of those experiencing it, deliberately preying on psychological instabilities, insecurities, and one's weakest mental points. Jin can control the False Reality to his liking, of course, but prefers to let it run its own course. What typically ensues is a traumatic Silent Hill-esque "Otherworld", if the local cult worshiped Nyarlathotep. Jin can merely make it a teasing environment, but if roused to full hostility, can literally create someone's personal hell, one that need not obey physics or limitations of human understanding.

Forbidden Truth:

Acting as a sort of "psychic curse" on the target, Jin forbids them from revealing specified information to another person. The curse consists of Jin's illusory magic lingering in the mind of the target, so it can be dispelled or removed as any other curse could be. It can be resisted, however, and with significant mental strain, the Forbidden Truth can be revealed. Revealing a Forbidden Truth requires that the information be of significant importance to reveal; the subject's mind will refuse itself if it deems the information not important enough to be worth the effort. For example, if Jin forbade the revealing of a personal secret, most people would be unable to divulge the secret even if they wanted to, because deep down they knew it wasn't worth the effort. If Jin forbade crucial information, however, and someone needed to convey that information in an emergency, they could, with some focus and a temporary headache, break the curse and reveal the information.

Stygian Oath:

A promise one is forced to keep. Jin's manipulation of truth "strengthens" particular truths, meaning that one is kept to their word like it or not. A Stygian Oath must be willingly taken, however, Jin's magic will fail if the target is under any sort of duress or threat. The Oath essentially acts as a 'contract' between someone else and Jin, or between two or more parties Jin is mediating between. Exact words are very important here, so Jin typically prefers to set an Oath in writing, or at least illusory text as opposed to spoken words. Simply put, one must abide to their word, and by "signing" the contract or accepting the Oath, one is bound to it. One is under no compulsion to follow through with their agreement. If, however, they fail to abide by the terms or carry out their Oath, a horrific punishment is triggered.

Jin eats a substantial portion of knowledge from the failure's mind, equivalent to the amount of memories accrued since the Oath was taken, though Jin may choose to eat knowledge in bits and pieces from all across the victim's mind rather than a single large block of time. This is extremely traumatic, to say the least, though Jin finds it exhilarating to feel the rush of information flood his mind. Jin can, however, offer a "double or nothing" on Stygian Oaths: Should one fail an Oath, they may be offered a second Oath. Fulfilling the second Oath will grant them all their stolen memories and knowledge back. Failing it will trigger the punishment a second time, and Jin will offer them yet another Oath. This can lead to the total destruction of a mind through repeat failure, thus one is advised not to accept a Stygian Oath lightly.

As one must be fully willing, and not coerced or threatened, to subject themselves to such extreme danger, it begs the question what one gets out of it: certainty. Jin prefers to mediate between parties and give them Oaths to agree to, as this functions as essentially guaranteeing that all parties involved will try their hardest to stay by their word. Jin is not merciless with this, and will almost always include an escape clause or two. Again, exact words are important, and one must agree to the Oath they take. If Jin is in a position where his services or loyalty is necessary, he will demand an Oath be taken to guarantee he is not backstabbed.

A sample Oath towards just Jin:

"I vow that neither my actions or my inactions will lead to the harm of Jin Hayate, the executor of this contract. Should I harm him in any such way, encourage others to harm him, fail to assist him when able, or engineer a situation in which he would come to harm, I will have violated this Stygian Oath and accept the consequences of doing so."

Sample Oath between parties:

"I vow that I will provide financial resources necessary for the bare minimum function of Hyakuji High School, so long as the school continues to operate as an institution of learning and development. I will not provide finances at the expense of my own well-being, and it is acceptable for me to prioritize my own necessities for survival over Hyakuji High School. If, however, I am at fault for being in such a financial situation, I will be expected to contribute whatever finances I am able to. Should I fail to support Hyakuji High School in such a way, I will have violated this Stygian Oath and accept the consequences of doing so."

Equipment You Have:

Nothing exceptional. Smartphone, wallet. Keys. Nicotine gum, as he got himself addicted to nicotine but has no desire to actually smoke. Given that he can record IDs and even appearances/voices very easily, obtaining age-restricted products is trivial.

Residency Request: Yuki dorm, but actually sleeps in Fudo occasionally, having created a female alter-ego based on compiled recordings of girls being layered together. Mostly just to show that he can get away with it if he feels like it.

Schedule:
Homeroom Teacher: Mare
1)History
2)The Arts
3)Cooking

Personality Description:

Jin calls himself The Liar and with very good reason. He's delusional to the point of paranoia that nobody would like his real self, so he shrouds himself in lies constantly. Being able to record anything he wanted over the course of his life led to a scholarly approach to the world, as he seeks to accumulate knowledge and ever-more recordings. He's only honest about being a liar in the first place, as he enjoys watching people struggle to figure out what's real and what's invented by his talent.

With a thirst for learning and a playful disposition, Jin verges on the ethically questionable at times. He is a womanizer, and desires female company regularly, becoming irate if denied it. He has spied on people, loves manipulating people for manipulation's sake as it gives him a sense of control, and is not shy about abusing his talent to the fullest to get what he wants or drive someone insane.

Despite that, he has a firm belief in ironclad rules of law, appreciating moral strictures and codes. His morality is Kantian, believing that what is good is what makes logical sense to be good. Given his manipulation of what looks to be real, he strongly values reliability and truth. Knowledge leads to goodness, in his mind. The underlying truths of reality are ultimately what he wants people to believe in and hold dear, including perhaps someday his real self. If such a thing really exists.

Personal History:

He lies about it constantly to the point where it's mostly irrelevant to other characters. Jin flat-out enjoys lying to people, so it is very unlikely another character would find out anything truthful about his background.

The truth? Jin...had a perfectly happy childhood. His parents cared for him, nobody died tragically save for old age, and there was no extensive web of intrigue. When he arrived at Hyakuji in his Freshman year, he found it a laugh riot how complicated some of his peers were. That didn't stop him from inventing all sorts of crazy stories for giggles, as well as to blend in. Frankly, being normal wasn't normal at Hyakuji, and Jin picked up on that quickly.

The chaotic past few years saw him in action from the sidelines, naturally, but he was obviously never very prominent. As his Hyakuji career winds down, Jin has taken a more active role for the sake of his own amusement, mostly.

Mashed Potatoes?

I'd better not be the first person to make this joke, or I'll be very disappointed in Hyakuji's collective 90's referential humor.
