Dungeon Crawl Round Robin

Now, let's play together...under the clearest of blue skies.
So, there's this roguelike named Dungeon Crawl that I've been getting back into recently. On another forum I went to previously, we did this pretty fun thing called round robin.

Basically, Dungeon Crawl is a roguelike (think Diablo I), so normally, when you die it deletes your save file for that character. Characters are generally short-lived, and you have to know a lot about the game (and also be pretty lucky) in order to survive for any length of time. There are wide, varied, and occasionally hilarious ways to die.

Even though it deletes your save file when you die, it's pretty easy to just copy and paste it somewhere else and put it back in (I use a folder named 'cheating' in the saves folder) as the save files are just .cs files that you can move freely.

To see an example of what the game looks like, this is a screenshot of me fighting some orcs: http://i50.tinypic.com/2zthn5f.jpg

Note that this is a shitton of orcs that no one would be expected to go toe to toe with, and I teleported away shortly after this. But I left some confusion clouds behind so they would kill each other after I left, which was both hilarious and lucrative.

So basically, this is how round robin works - I'll start off a character, and play for, let's say 5000 turns (you can see turn count in the top right), and then save and stop. Then, I'll drop the save file here, someone else picks it up and plays for another 5000 turns, and does the same.

While we're playing, we take screenshots of noteworthy moments and post them with captions and descriptions, sort of like a lets play, so everyone can see what happened when they pick up the save file.

Now, dying happens pretty often in this game, since its a roguelike (you should probably expect to die most of the time). On the other forum I did it on, we'd just back up to the previous save file, but since this is Hyakuji, making a new character whenever someone died would let us all make our own characters in the game (which offers some pretty expansive character creation options), which might make it more fun even if we never make it past D:3. If you try to create a new character but don't make it to 5000 turns, just scrap it and start over.

Save files are generated and stored in the saves folder in the game directory. Drop the file there, then when you start the game up, there will be an option to continue from that save file.

I've started us off with an initial save file - Cassandra Flores, the Human Skald.

Cassandra's Run

FOR PEOPLE NEW TO THE GAME
Press 'z' to use magic
Press 'm' to manage skills
Click inventory items to use them
Click squares or monsters to move or attack.
Press 'o' to autoexplore. For new players, you may want to stick to manual movement until you get used to things.
If the text display at the bottom left says --More--, that means you have to hit Enter before doing anything else.
Use the '<' or '>' keys to go up or down stairs, respectively.
If you're injured, rest after a battle. You can use the '.' key to skip turns, or click one of the command buttons in the middle right to rest until full (or until an enemy shows up).
When standing on a square, items on the ground will be shown in the bottom right, under your inventory. Shift-Click corpses to chop them up into chunks of meat, of variable edibleness. You always want to do this whenever possible, as food items like meat rations and fruit will last forever, and should be saved for when temporary food is not available.
Feel free to do a private game on your own to get used to the game before continuing the run.
Don't horde items too much. This game is brutal, and you will die if you don't use every tool available.
Run away from Sigmund.

If the person who continues this run dies they should still post screenshots detailing the events leading up to their death. Then the person after them will pick up with a new character of their creation, and play to 5000 turns as I did just now.

Attached is the save file. Drop it in the saves folder to continue the run. Don't forget to take screenshots!

EDIT: You should probably post when you start continuing a run, so that two people don't end up playing at the same time.

NICE DRIVE!
Not sure about the point of passing a Roguelike save, seems against the spirit of those games ^^;

BUT MORE TO THE POINT, Dungeon Crawl is a great game. Very good Roguelike. My favorite would probably have to be Legends of Yore, however: http://www.legendsofyore.com/

Well, the point is to make it more of a community thing.

Also Fin, it would be cool if you could post the morgue files and the bones file for the floor you died on, if you still have them. Putting those in along with the save file will add the record of Cassandra's death to future games. It might be too much trouble though.

I'm tempted to set up a git repository so everyone can just pull and push from the same dungeon crawl folder and everyone's morgue files are always there, but that would probably be even MORE trouble for people to set up...

i dunno, cant you just zip the whole save folder then upload it? like... for windows 7 the folders should be under C:/users/username/appdata/roaming/crawl... zip up the whole crawl folder and put it up : x

of course, put away your own crawl folder somewhere safe so you don't overwrite your own saves and morgue

that being said: http://www.mediafire.com/?3bv8t61w5idnrn8

Between issues with taking screenshots and schoolwork, I'm withdrawing my attempt at this.
