Personality

~Laughing in the face of the world’s troubles, he proudly moves onwards…~

If anything, Trystan is a mix of contradicting statements. Having been ingrained with the sayings and philosophies of the Ryoushou-Ryuu since he could remember, he lives by, often quotes, and is truly convinced of their motto.

There is a thing known as Justice;
有一種東西叫正義;
To grasp and protect great Justice, one must possess great Kung Fu!
要高強正義, 就要有高強功夫!

An inherently unclear and paradoxical philosophy, this philosophy intentionally allows their students to follow their own sense of great Justice. Stripped down to its basics, the philosophy states that for better or for worse, only the strong are able to enforce Justice. Thus, one trains in order to allow Justice the freedom to spread throughout the world. This may seem like a form of absolute Darwinism, but this is not the case. Like the free expression within the art itself, all practitioners eventually make their way back out into the world, most of whom never walk the path of the sword again. However, life is a never-ending battle; shore up one’s own defenses with hard work and the torrents will never sweep you away. The sense of Justice is never the same with two different people, nor is the entirety ever forced upon others – it is a way of life. To be able to truly grasp Justice, both physically and spiritually, is to grasp one’s own life within one’s own hands; to be in control of one’s own life is the greatest form of empowerment – the greatest form that Justice could ever take.

As such, he is highly compassionate, and chooses to put hard work, devotion to a cause, honor, relationships (not limited to just romance), and loyalty high up on his priority list. Unless you do something absolutely unforgivable by his books, it is next to impossible for Trystan to truly despise a person; even then, he is quick to forgive if a desire for repentance is shown. With a quirky sense of humor, formed upon years of seclusion, along with a helpful and innocently curious attitude, he remains an easily approachable person despite the brutal ease with which he can take a life. On the other hand, he is commonly seen as the gentle incompetent due to his normally relaxed and unassumingly pleasant expression, as he is still a high school sophomore despite being 23 years of age and counting. However, few know that he had been uneducated by the modern educational institution until he had been 17 years of age. Thus, he just accepts his character tag and moves onwards.

Due to the Heartless incident and his permanent fusing with a multitude of other versions of his Self from alternate dimensions, Trystan has lived, combined, a countless number of lifetimes, giving him mental fortitude, intuition, and experience that far outstrips that of many of his peers. As a result, his former relative innocence has faded into a jaded sort of outlook; one has to really do something extraordinary to surprise him. On the other hand, Trystan has also become much more willing to believe the absurd, leading his jaded outlook to sometimes cause him to believe even the most outrageous of lies.

The result of years of training, his mental fortitude truly shines when put into trying circumstances. When fighting becomes unavoidable, he remains calm and collected, and will become exponentially colder, efficient, and merciless as his opponent(s) become more and more of a threat to both the general public and the people he holds dear to him. With a high, innate level of intuition, a focused mind, a tremendous combined amount of live combat experience, along with his polished skills, there are few who can truly face off with him in serious close to mid-ranged physical combat.

However, in the end, Trystan is still one who prefers harmony over bloodshed, and will favor avoiding combat or merely subduing an opponent, and giving opponents a chance for reconsideration rather than fighting, and perhaps killing, whenever possible.
Equipment

  • Bare Essentials
As a long-time practitioner of Ryoushou-Ryuu Kobudo, Trystan has been trained to be able to use most anything that he can grab from around him as a weapon. However, he is still most proficient, while armed, with typical Chinese double-edged straight swords and Miao Dao, or any type of stick weapons. Thus he carries around a plain, inauspicious reinforced metal pointer rod with a neatly wrapped plastic grip, which really is just a thicker pointer like those used in presentations, with him in his pocket. This pointer can extend to an oblong-tubed rod of roughly 3.6 feet in length, and is completely dull in all respects. However, Trystan prefers to engage with opponents unarmed, as the risk of unnecessarily injuring the opponent is much less.

  • Apparel
Aside from the pointer, Trystan only has a pair of heavy duty, heat resistant, and anti-conductive gloves and boots to protect his hands and feet when needed, a battered but reliable rucksack, and a plain white headband. Apart from his school uniform and some casual wear Nina bought for him from a nearby store, his clothes all consist of typical dress from where he trained with his Laoshi. He also carries a small, almost uselessly blunt Swiss Army knife. The knife itself is barely able to cut through vegetables, and is mostly used for the fork and spoon hidden ingeniously into the design.

  • Vigilante Garb: Rift Fuse
Having no abilities whatsoever, the Rift Fuse alone is the only remaining physical concrete evidence that Trystan has which proves that the Heartless had invaded this dimension before. It serves as a mere regenerating costume, allowing Trystan to change his appearance. It now serves mostly to intimidate his opponents, and occasionally as Trystan’s vigilante armor. When put away, the Fuse recedes into six dot-shaped tattoos on the small of his back. As a note, the “tail” on the Fuse retains its prehensile abilities, and sometimes reflects Trsystan's current state of mind.
Powers / Abilities

  • Ryoushou-Ryuu Kobudo (Pure Mist Style 凌霄流古武道)
A martial art that was first developed in China before being brought over to Japan by visiting monks, Ryoushou-Ryuu kobujutsu is a highly adaptive and customizable form of self-defense that is best characterized as a harmonized mixture of external and internal. A critical part in mastering this martial art is not to memorize forms and placement of body and limbs, but to understand the purpose behind each and every movement. As such, there will always be variations in how a practitioner goes about using this style due to interpretative expression, but will always have methods that accomplish the same goals. Ryoushou-Ryuu kobujutsu encompasses many different aspects of self-defense, as martial arts were indeed meant for, and only meant for, self defense at the time Ryoushou-Ryuu kobujutsu was developed. These disciplines include ground work, standing grappling and joint manipulation, open and closed hand striking, kicking, weapons training, and etc.

Separating Ryoushou-Ryuu combat from pure fist-fighting is their ability to project one’s Qi. This allows one to use their Qi as a direct weapon to either attack meridian crossroads via “tapping” (點穴 / dian xue) to cause temporary paralysis and numbness through nervous overloads and energy flow disruption. Qi can also be used as an extension of the body to cause both long distance cutting/piercing (無形劍氣 / wu xing jian qi) damage and/or blunt physical trauma (掌氣 / zhang qi) at a closer distance from the hands while unarmed. Additionally, Qi can be channeled into objects to make them and/or parts of the user’s body into enhanced and formidable makeshift weapons/armor, while still connected to the body, in their own right (运氣 / yun qi). Qi enhanced attacks are the result of Qi being channeled and held within an object (运氣), as opposed to 劍氣 and/or 掌氣, which are considered Qi projectile attacks.
((Details and mechanics of both Qi and Tapping are described in the spoiler tag at the bottom of this section.)) As a side note, Ryoushou-Ryuu’s channeling techniques sometimes causes temporary physical alterations to one’s appearance, among them, rapid growth and melanin degeneration of the practioner’s hair.

However, these offensive applications of Qi are really all secondary effects that were originally not meant to be the main application. This style, as most Asian martial arts do, also trains the practitioner in vital, multi-purpose breathing techniques (呼吸吐納 / hu xi tu na) and health instruction. The breathing techniques not only help promote growth as well as maintain and balance the reservoirs of Qi within the body, it also allows the practitioner to learn how to channel this Qi to various other areas within their body in particular sequences to achieve a desired effect (內氣導引 / nei qi dao ying). Eventually, the practitioner begins to utilize these exercises to guide their Qi automatically, as all these exercises are doing is adjusting one’s own breathing pattern to achieve a maximal benefit. As the body itself finds this a desirable result, it “learns” the exercises and runs through them out of habit, like a second nature. As a result, one’s meridian paths and reservoirs of Qi are constantly open and ready to be used and expelled or channeled, thus allowing one the ability to achieve the desired effects nearly instantaneously. The results of these exercises range from trivial and mundane, such as warming and calming the body in order to sleep through cold weather with minimal protection from the elements, to the more commonly showcased feats of amplified strength, physical fortitude – all marks of a healthy individual. These exercises also eventually allow the user to perform “lightness” techniques (輕功 / qing gong), which “lightens” one’s body, allowing one to run far faster as well as jump higher and further than normal people, with speeds rivaling that of magic-assisted travel, and, eventually, allowing nigh-instantaneous movements over short distances.

To counter the risks one undertakes as a martial art practitioner, one must be able to take care of the body needs in order to keep oneself, as well as others, in optimal condition. As such, Ryoushou-Ryuu kobujutsu also actively instructs the practitioner in massaging and relaxation techniques (擒/推拿 / qin/tui na), forcible poison excretion from the bloodstream using Qi (逼毒 / bi du), acupuncture, methods of mixing and obtaining traditional herbal medicines, as well as the other healing aspects and applications of Qi alongside the martial aspects. As a side note, Ryoushou-Ryuu kobujutsu is also perhaps one of the few, if not only, martial arts that teaches culinary skills that any normal restaurant would be grateful to have in their kitchen. This has been attributed to a popular story that says that the reason why the monks were “visiting” in the first place was because they had been excommunicated from their order for their sinful love of the pleasures of the flesh.

    ~.Details and Mechanics.~
    無性氣功 (Qi Applications) Mechanics Explained
Spoiler: click to toggle

  • ”Sakki” Perception
As a prerequisite to becoming a successful practitioner of Ryoushou-Ryu Kobujutsu, one must first be able to naturally tell when someone in your surroundings is focusing upon you with malicious intent (Sakki, 殺氣 / sha qi). This perception is an innate sort of sixth sense – something that one is born with, but can be learned with enough effort. When this perception skill is fine-tuned, not only can one identify from which direction and at what distance the source of malice is from you, but can also identify other emotions as well. In short, it is a primal, but highly accurate form of emotion reading and short-term action prediction based upon not only the slightest details in body positioning, but also on a highly attuned gut instinct.

However, this seemingly miraculous homing system is not without its drawbacks; upon noticing the Sakki, Trystan starts to feel nauseous, and will eventually have a hard time breathing and pass out from the mixed feelings of fear and disgust if the killing intent becomes strong enough. Since this is not a skill that can be activated and deactivated at will, the potential hazards of this ability are great as well. When polished, this skill allows not only one to tolerate higher levels of Sakki, but also emit, suppress, and/or direct great amounts of focused hostility towards multiple specific targets within a certain range. After countless encounters with the Heartless and fusing with multiple selves, Trystan’s tolerance of the side effects of and mastery of this skill has grown tremendously, to the point that he can perceive and target any being or beings within a 10 km radius, with diminishing results over longer distances.

After having spent the year after the Heartless incident wandering, attempting to keep his own personality intact with the various personalities from alternate dimensions rapidly leaving his body, the mental focus gained from the near constant meditation has unlocked a new, but dangerous side of this skill – the ability to sense the lack of directed malice. By forcing malice outwards towards the world, the world itself reacts by sending malice back towards the user. However, with this sort of feedback, one is able to sense those locations and/or sources which/who conversely defy the natural order by not reacting with malice. However, this skill is a double edged sword, as the constant exposure to this redirected and overwhelming malice of the world causes high strain to the user, and if the user does not exercise strict control, could cause him to enter a state immense mental and physical injury, entering the state known and warned only against with the fearsome description of “walking within the fire and becoming a demon” (走火入魔).

Those who cannot sense Sakki, who are, naturally, mostly civilians raised in peace throughout their entire lives, perceive being targeted as only somewhat discomforting; the more sensitive ones may perceive that the area has suddenly appeared to have decreased in size or has suddenly become much colder due to their own subconscious reactions to the malicious intent.

Now, let's play together...under the clearest of blue skies.
It's a good profile, I really liked it, but there are a few things that I should point out.

The biggest thing is that the in-depth explanation on 'Tapping' is an empty quote block - there's nothing there. So that needs to be put in before it can be approved. I had some questions on that - in particular, Chapter 3 of your story implies that he can go Kenshiro on people with pressure points, which is a little much - but I'll wait until that's in the profile before critiquing it.

In terms of power slots, I'm looking at it like this:
1) Paralysis
2) Reinforcement/Enhancement
3) Projection
4) (pseudo)Healing
5) Perception
6) Armor
Which I think checks out, as you've been around for a few seasons (or the character has, anyway - it's stated that he was spending the time training, even if he wasn't being roleplayed during that time ICly), but someone else may jump in and say it's too much.

Just to confirm - he doesn't carry swords on him, correct? Only the metal rod?

A few clarifications:

1) Qi projection states that it "can easily pulverize rocks and concrete even when not used at full-power." What can it do when it is used at full power? Although it's stated that Trystan would be more likely to restrict himself and not fire a killing blow, that sounds pretty fearsome, so I'd like an upper bound of some sort placed on it somewhere.

2) How strong is the physical defense granted by the Rift armor? It appears to be made of metal, so I'd assume it's equivalent to a set of full plate armor?

3) It says that when his body is enhanced with Qi, he can run faster and jump higher than normal humans - how much faster/higher, exactly? Can he run faster than a speeding bullet? Leap tall buildings in a single bound?

And a few things that need fixing:

1) In one section, it states that Qi projections take picoseconds to reach the target, being nigh-instantaneous. But in the section describing catching and re-routing Qi projections, it says that "it is also usually simply easier to leave the attack path" - something that was earlier implied to be nigh-impossible. Would it be possible to fix the contradiction by having the Qi projections be a bit slower? Enough that someone with super reflexes and/or capable of Shunpo would be able to dodge it if they saw it coming.

2) Relatively minor thing, but the Wikipedia link to the Jian page needs fixing, you seem to have copypasted the URL twice, so that the link leads to "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jianhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jian".

EDIT: Also, one question, as it isn't really explained I think but seems pretty important. Does he have a limited pool of Qi that he can use for his abilities (assuming that the Qi is drawn from within himself, as implied)?

sorry about the tapping thing disappearing. i didn't notice that it had; i'll put it here so you can see without waiting for me to edit

Spoiler: click to toggle

while you might say that those are too much, i'd like to offer my POV first.

From my perspective, those things that you have listed are coming from the ability to do one thing: master level ability of qi manipulation. as i have based my character off of the chinese wuxia concept of qi in "fantasy" martial arts, these things are pretty much accepted as part of a package as a whole. E.G., once you learn how to manipulate, "tapping", reinforce/enhance/armor, perception and hearing are all commonly used applications of knowing how to manipulate qi, though admittedly with varying effectiveness. Pretty much, after learning manipulation, all these other things branch off from there naturally. The only one that i can concur with you is the projection, ability, as within the context projection is limited to advanced to master class practitioners. However, given that, despite his status as a student, the character himself is the head of and has been practicing and utilizing this one holistic art for the majority of his life in various and frequent combat situations due to his previous lifestyle, i think that this is a reasonable assumption to make.

regarding the weaponry - he does not carry any weapons on him. just the dull knife and the pointer.

  • full power for the projections would be like artillery or tank rounds. however, the gathering of the qi required is not instantaneous, and would take longer and be more telegraphed the higher the power of the projection is.
  • the physical defense is just like you said - it's basically just a suit of retractable armor.
  • he won't be running faster than a bullet, but he would be able to dodge one, most likely. tall buildings might take an effort, but it'd really depend on the distance between the two. it's pretty much just accelerated movement. i won't be faster or as fast as those who's powers focus solely on speed, but i wouldn't be a snail compared to them either.

now onto the other list XD
  • i probably didn't make it clear enough in the section describing the qi projections, but all of those projecting attacks have a "wind-up"motion, kinda like how punches and kicks have slight telegraphs. the longer the wind-up motion is, the heavier the blow, but also the easier to tell where it will be going and/or launch a preemptive strike (since the projections travel in exact linear paths). clearly, one could make an argument about "non-telegraphed" attacks, but the windup motion would be much smaller than that of a more powerful move, so essentially it would only be a low-power non-telgraphed projection. high risk high rewards kinda thing :P
  • i'll fix the link thing in a bit XD
  • yes, he has a pool to draw from within himself. as of yet, he does not have any way of increasing the recharging rate beyond what he can gain from silent and still meditation. during normal waking and activities, as well as during combat, he will still regenerate, but not enough to make it so that he would never need to worry about his pool running out. it's basically like a mana bar with a regen that varies depending on what he's doing, and without the ability to pot it back.

i think that's everything~

As for the Tapping, I think the "Instantaneous movement techniques of any type are blocked from being activated due to an extremely disrupted flow of energy within the target." thing should be removed. I kind of don't like the fact that the power imposes a debuff, and then simultaneously blocks any counters to getting around that debuff. It's enough that he has full-body paralysis - if someone has a power that lets them get around full body paralysis somehow, they should be able to use it, I think. It's only fair.

The artillery tank Qi shells might be a little much, but I'll let Cap handle that one.

Talked it over with Hiro. You're not getting power ups. You're allowed to go with what you were approved with through S3, but even then, I want clarifications. I want to know how strong the Qi blasts are at maximum.

modifications to be made to what is currently in topic:

  • changing numbers previously included in S3 profile back to what they were

  • source of energy for all qi-based attacks by character will be clarified to be from a collected, slowly regenerating, self generated pool of qi within the Trystan. maximum regeneration is achieved through silent still meditation. qi will passively regenerate throughout the day regardless of actions, but will never be enough to allow infinite pool within the same combat thread.

  • qi projections will be clarified to be malleable in shape prior to shooting. only simple shapes with a diameter of up to the size of Trystan's outstretched hands from fingertip to fingertip can be made. form shaping is instantaneous at its smallest, and only takes a few milliseconds to reach max size.

  • qi projections will be clarified to have a windup motion, where the longer the windup is, the more powerful the attack. windups take a maximum of 1 post, with the attack happening at the end of the same post. if an attack is used at max, or relatively close to max power, said attack is the only action that the character will be able to perform, and be unable to dodge or defend in any manner. at most, 3 qi projections can be used in any single post. each qi projection can be divided up to 5 times, but each part of the same projection can only be aimed at the same part.

  • kenki projections will be clarified to be a cutting/stabbing projection with a range of 5 arm lengths, starting from the base of the shoulder. has no explosive and/or crushing power, but can cut through pretty much any non-plot priority objects (aka, can not cut through player characters without prior agreement, character's weapons, etc). may pierce through armor to deal damage though

  • shouki projections will be clarified to be a crushing/exploding projection with a range of 3.5 arm lengths, starting from the base of the shoulder. can be visualized as a "beam" instead of a "fireball". aka, will travel to it's intended destination before exploding/crushing, instead of say, hitting a random stone in the air and exploding there. will push back any physical projectiles caught in path. small-caliber bullets will be stopped, but anything higher will only be slightly slowed. upon impact, at max, the explosive abilities of several pounds of c4, enough to destroy a semi-armored truck, but nothing more than that.

  • Qi enhanced abilities will be clarified to have an operation time of anywhere between 30 minutes to a Day, depending on the amount of extra functionality generated. Qi enhanced attacks have no range bonus other than what was prior stated and accepted in the S3 profile. At maximum raw power, a few punches would be able to completely destroy a heavily armored tank's armor, but not destroy the tank itself.

  • rift fuse will be changed so as to not give any additional defense.

  • tapping mechanics have been clarified and updated. 1 tap is unchanged from s3 except for flavor text. 2 tap cuts movement to 1/10 of original max. 3 taps full body paralysis and no movement based on self-generated energies (eg, magical movement based on energy gathered from outside of the body will still work. telekinesis based on self-generated psychic energy won't, shunpo based on ki collected from the surrounding area will work, etc.). 4 and 5 taps are unchanged from original s3 content. untapping criteria unchanged from s3 content

  • sakki perception skill has added subfunction of being able to sense non-malice. this requires complete unbroken concentration, or the character runs the risk of inflicting grave self injuries.

these are all the changes i believe should be made to the current pending version of the profile in accordance to the verdict given. please tell me if there's anything missing/won't fly~

Alright. I've had a day to think this over. So I'm going to reiterate what was said and do a bit more in terms of clarification.

I can't find the spot where you talk about regeneration and the like, can you please highlight and quote it for me?

I'm willing to let the charging go since it means dropping all dodging capability. Willing to let the 3 attacks per post fly. Not willing to let each one of those 3 be split into 5 sections. Way too much.

What kind of armor can the kenki projections cut through? Just saying armor isn't good enough.

Like I said last night, several pounds of C4 is far too much. I'd at most say 1 pound of C4, and that's being generous. I wouldn't let that fly with just 1 turn of charging, I'd need like 3, or some great cost.

Please avoid minutes and hours when describing powers. Please describe time limits in terms of Posts. ie: Lasts 5 posts, lasts 10 posts, things like that.

Going back over your profile something popped up at me:

Quote:

It only takes several picoseconds for Qi projections to reach their target(s), due to the technique’s own theoretical maximum effective, but not operational, range of just over six arm lengths past the practitioner’s own fingertips

Several Picoseconds? Maybe our math is wrong but according to what Erin and I ran, it looks like you're attacking at well over 100x the speed of light. Not going to allow that.

  • for the power stuff, i'm still going over that with sybilus's help. rest assured that the c4 stuff is going to change. also, as we saw clearly yesterday, my ability to comprehend explosives is pretty much nil lol. basically, please put that thought on hold for now before a finalized version of that comes out XD

  • for regeneration, i mean more of the pool of qi regenerating, not as much my health. passively, i will be regenerating both qi and recovering from physical damage, but it's just a slightly accelerated healing (like a shallow wound clotting a bit faster than normal people). regarding the qi regenerating, as i said in the clarification post, it's just a small thing, and won't be enough to let me run on indefinitely. as for actual quoting, i can't quote it for you yet, since it's not in the profile yet XD. i wanted to get the ok for the clarification before writing anything down.

  • let me try to illustrate the 5 section thing. pretty much, say that i shot three projections, labeled as 1, 2, and 3. projection 1 deals x damage. by splitting it into 5 sections, each section can deal x/5 damage. however, each section that came from the same projection can only be aimed at the same place. basically, it's just for cosmetic effect - i'm not able to aim at 15 different spots at the same time. so if i aim projection 1 at a leg and split it into 5 sections, all 5 sections have to be aimed at the leg. in effect, it will do the same damage and never more, but it's just a cosmetic difference (as an extension of the malleability detail).

  • kenki will cut through anything that is not alive that is not rule-armored (eg, i would be able to cut through a random npc goon's weapon or such easily, but would be unable to deal much damage to a npc major plot boss's weapons) based on the alive and such rules that were already in the profile. to be specific, it will go through any sort of armor/shield/aura/etc. that does not specifically say that it can block qi/chi/ki. it can go through auras/shields made of ki/chi/qi, but will have reduced effectiveness the stronger the shield being put up. details in the spoiler to prevent even more walling ><

Spoiler: click to toggle

  • the several picoseconds thing will be changed back to the milliseconds that was used in the s3 profile. the main thing i was trying to illustrate was that (keeping in mind that i am basing this off wuxia concepts of qi, and not dbz styled kamehameha or SF hadouken ki attacks) these attacks, once the windup motions are finished, pretty much instantaneously reaches the intended location, travelling a perfectly linear trajectory.

please tell me if any further clarification is needed, or if i missed anything you were asking about~

So wait, it went from Immobilization to Mage's Disjunction? >_>;;

I honestly don't think full body paralysis should be allowed at all. Hyakuji isn't a 1-player game, and it's pretty difficult for people to RP if their characters can't move or speak or do anything meaningful. Your power basically boots people out of their own threads by taking away their ability to make a post.

But even though I thought that, I didn't ask you to remove the power completely, just one facet of it. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm trying to be lenient here because you have other mods on you, but you're making it really difficult for me...I've had to ask you to remove this feature three separate times now.

I'll give it a probation stamp. Like Cap said, if anyone complains, we'll bring it back to square one, but a powerful character is fine if you use it responsibly. So we'll just be watching your threads to see how it goes.

Not moving it though until Cap's response.
