THE DRAGON YOUKAI Character Name: Shun Gender: Male Age: 335 years old Height: 181cm Weight: 76kg Description or Image of Character Appearance: Don't be fooled, he sleeps on the park bench. :x Occupation: Hyakuji High's Supernatural Studies Teacher / ex-Youkai Exterminator / Hobo Powers/ Abilities: The Odd Eastern Dragon ~ An Old Legend In Time He is an odd Youkai hailing from a particularly powerful and ancient dragon clan in China. He is odd in particular because despite the rest of his clan being affiliated as the guardian of wind and rain, he instead has an affinity towards fire. Being the black sheep of the group he was constantly treated as an outcast before he moved on, seeking refuge in the human world instead. And from there on, he had been living as a human being, almost completely forgetting his root as a dragon youkai. Let it be known however, that deep down he is still that of a monster. An old, ferocious dragon that sleeps in the confines of his soft and amiable human heart. He had long since suppressed his old draconic self, but he could just as easily release them whenever he wants. Though considering it has been so long since he had been in touch with his dragonic self, it oftentimes manifests itself in the form of a massive ethereal scarlet dragon made by his own ki reserve. This form is capable of incredible amount of destruction without discrimination, but more often than not a single manifestation of this form would completely drain him of life energy and knock him out of commission. Though on a much smaller scale, for whenever he feels like it he could still actually manifest his true dragon self. Like, turning himself to look like a humanoid dragon in flesh and blood, be it partially or completely. Most of the time it's just for cosmetic purpose or to prove that he really is of a dragon youkai descent. Be Swift as a Coursing River ~ With The Force of a Great Typhoon While at most a normal human only has as much as their lifetime to perfect their martial arts, Shun, being a Dragon Youkai with a MUCH greater lifespan, has had approximately three hundred years worth of martial arts knowledge and experience ingrained into every part of his body. Fighting has practically become second nature to him, capable of reacting to attacks even in his sleep. You will be hard pressed trying to take him down. He is very much a one man army, with all the strength and ferocity of a dragon to boot. Breathing and Blood ~ River of Life An extra something he learned a while back to supplement his combat ability. Qi manipulation encompasses an extremely wide scope of how someone can utilize their life energy. What you can do is basically up to your imagination when you can freely utilize energy and transform it in however way you want it by simply focusing on it. ...Well, okay, it's not actually that simple, but you get the idea. While Shun had learned how to manipulate his qi to use them in various situation for various task, in combat however, he believes that offense is the best defense, and would focus mainly on augmenting his body to achieve an even greater physical capability, such as creating a massive explosion of qi following a punch or kick for maximum damage, shooting small shards of qi like knives, forming shields to block certain energy based attacks and to create platforms under his feet in midair so that he can do a double jump Or triple. Or... you get the idea. Be warned, usage of qi may result in an extremely flashy rainbow-ish light show and must be avoided at all cost when you're aiming to be stealthy. On a lesser note, in combat he tends to use up his qi reserve at a very fast rate no thanks to his ferocious nature when fighting. Running out of qi would usually result in extreme exhaustion and fatigue, a black out if he pushes it too far, that would take a good night sleep at least for him to fully recover from it. In addition to manipulating his own qi, he also has the ability to sense the life force of another living entity. It's his one ability he is really proud about, with his detection ability being so accurate, he can detect the position of a small mouse to a single centimeter within a hundred meters diameter of area, and trace the residual qi left behind to about a hundred meters. His detection ability would, of course, become less accurate at a greater distance, and residual qi tracing isn't exactly reliable over long period of time. Equipment You Have: The clothes on his back: That never seems to break down despite how worn down they looked. Residency Request: Anywhere really, as long as he can sleep and nothing or no one disturbs him. Personality Description: Despite the fact that he is a youkai, he is in actuality very calm, gentle and amiable. Very easy-going and carefree and very approachable, he could easily be the best friend of everyone and anyone, no matter who they are or what they are. And this strangely enough, includes other youkai, considering the fact that he used to be a youkai exterminator. Well, to justify though, seeing as he's new in Japan, he only had hostile relationship with the youkai back in China. He's on fairly good terms with everyone in Japan though, especially Hyakuji. This does make him look like a pushover though, at first glance. But don't be fooled by the weak front he wears, because there is a reason why he was often called a dragon back in the days. If he is ever agitated the kind mask he often wears in front of everyone will fall off, releasing the pent-up ferociousness and ruthlessness of the youkai inside him, and will not hesitate to, sometimes literally, rip apart anything that dares to harm himself or anyone around him. Putting that aside though, people will find one thing about him that's really annoying. He will almost always ask for money from anyone he could lay his eyes on. He's just... that lazy, to earn them by himself. Not from lack of trying, the only thing he's actually good at is exterminating monsters for money. And since people don't pay others to defeat monsters anymore... he's just desperate for money, alright? If you want to find him, chances are you can find him either sleeping on the bench at noon, or with the kids at the playground, or at vending machines, crouching on all four trying to reach under it for a change someone dropped earlier. Personal History: ~~This is a story about a single, unnamed Youkai.~~ He ran through the thick brambles of the forest, ignoring the stabbing pain on his legs and torso. His clothes were torn and tattered, his long hair was completely dyed with the red of his own blood. His vision was clouded, one of his eye was obscured by thick red liquid seeping down his face. It was a really close call just now, he had managed to escape being killed by his own species out of luck. He couldn't blame anyone, it was in the nature of Youkai to be violent. But still... Possibly because he couldn't exactly focus on where he was going, he barely noticed he had already reached the edge of the forest, unknowingly entering a small human village. It was only after a while did he notice where he was, and subsequently tried to rush back towards the forest as quickly as possible. No way, there is no way he can bring himself to meet humans in his current state... the humans and Youkai can never get along... they will incinerate him the moment they found him... He never got far. He took one step, and his consciousness left him completely. ~~~~~ He wasn't sure how long he had fallen asleep, nor was he sure when he had fallen asleep. Or heck... where was he? The moment he opened his eyes, awakened by the stabbing pain on his chest he found himself in a room of some sort... The place was otherwise completely empty except for the straw mat underneath him, a small wooden bucket of water and a piece of cloth. The Youkai raised his hand, expecting to feel the bloody injuries around his body, though was surprised to find that he was instead wrapped in bandages. There was no sense of urgency or danger as he was so used to. He didn't feel any sense of anxiety, or nervousness. The whole place just somehow felt... serene and peaceful. He couldn't remember ever feeling this way before... He got up to his feet, walked over to the door and slid it open, only to be immediately bathed in the morning shine. It took him a while to get used to the glare but when he did... ...He was in a small wooden building on a floating platform, surrounded by a body of water that extended across the Chinese garden, with stone walkway connecting the deck to the main building a fair distance away. Decorative plants were planted all over the place, carefully arranged in such a manner, complimented by the soft glare of the morning sun, it perfectly replicated the scenery of a natural riverside. However his attention was being diverted away from all of these to focus on one particular scene on the veranda... A woman in a navy blue dress and long black ponytail tied with a black ribbon, doing a strange yet seemingly soothing slow dance. Her movements were smooth and graceful, flowing like an unimpeded river going down a mountain. She seemed to capture the life around her, manipulating it accordingly to how she moves. The Youkai watched her for a few moment, before suddenly realizing his current predicament. He is in the middle of a human settlement! He could care less about why he was still alive now, he feared more about what would happen if he were to be found! Well, technically he had been found, but there is no way he can risk that happening more! He decided to leave. Immediately- "GAH!" A sudden jolt of pain surged through his body and he crashed to the floor on all four, his gasp of pain alerted the woman from her training and prompted her to rush towards him with concern etched on her face. "H-hey! What are you doing walking around?! You're still not in a good condition!" She fussed worriedly, helping him get back up to his feet. It was... an act that the Youkai did not expect at all to receive from a human. What is she on about? He couldn't help but feel suspicious. But he need to play this smartly... he can't risk letting her know he is a Youkai... there is no way a human like her would help a demon. "Don't... don't worry about me..." The Youkai said weakly, trying to push her away. "I really can't stay here for long... I uh... have work to do. Yes," It's a half-assed excuse, but he couldn't think of what else he could say. He didn't think it would work, but it annoyed him though, knowing that it didn't work. "Don't be ridiculous, you can't go to work like this!" The woman said sternly yet again, quite literally dragging him back to his bed and forcing him to lie down with a surprising amount of strength. Just... what in the name of... what is up with this woman? Why the hell is she fussing over him like someone's mother?! "And don't try to lie to me, you don't have work. You don't even have anywhere to go," It was a surprising statement coming from the woman. A strange one at that, because it actually made it sound like she knew him so well despite having never met him before. Something he didn't expect and admittedly it was something he quite dreaded. What she said next just confirmed his fear. "You're a Youkai, aren't you?" He stayed silent, neither confirming nor denying her question. He suspected that it was a rhetorical question though. She didn't need any answer. She already knew. How did she knew he had no idea, but one thing's for sure. She's not normal. Dangerous, even. His body was frozen and his mind was working frantically in search of a way out of this situation, but he wasn't sure if he should try anything at all considering his condition and the fact that he was being pinned to the ground with a finger. However, before he could say anything, the pressure on his head was lifted as she drew her hand away with a grin. "Hahah! Look at your face, you were so tense!" ...Okay, now he was honestly confused. What the hell is going on here, was she just playing around with him? "...Mind telling me what this is all about?" He said, lifting himself off the floor slightly to look at her, admittedly with a little bit of annoyance on his face. "Nothing, really. I just like to mess around," ...Huh... He can... kind of accept that? What does she mean messing around? Does this mean she was lying about knowing that he was a Youkai? That can't be, no one jumps to the conclusion about someone being a Youkai on a whim like that, even if it was supposed to be a joke. "Alright... tell me what's up here," The woman stared at him for a moment before cracking a laugh. "Well... alright, I guess. You just woke up after all that, you must still be confused," She got up to her feet, walking out to the veranda with her hands behind her back. "I found you last night. Out there at the middle of the road, all beat up and bloodied like you just got beaten by a monster or something. So I brought you back to my place and tended to your injuries," The woman stopped in her track, turning around to look at her. "Though I have to ask, why would Youkai attack their own kind?" That... pretty much proved it. She knew full well what he really is. However at the same time he wasn't particularly worried. Because. well... if she really wanted to do something to him she would have done it last night. There's still one thing he wanted to know though. "How do you know I am a Youkai...?" It was a valid question, because, as uncommon as it was, his appearance resembles a human more than a Youkai it was very easy to mistake him as a human even after fifty glances at him. "That's easy, really," The woman said as she walked back into the house, crouching down as she approached him. She raised her hand and gently placed a finger on his head. "Your life force... they're not human," It was a strange thing to say, and even stranger for him to hear. Apparently this woman has the ability to sense life force? However the hell that was supposed to work he had no idea whatsoever. But it doesn't seem to be a matter of great importance for her as she immediately changed the subject to something else. "Oh, also! What's your name?" It was a question that totally threw him off his loop. "Uh... wait, what? My name...?" He hesitated slightly, his eyes glancing around the room for an answer seeing as he doesn't have one on person. "I... I don't have a name..." She stared at him, apparently flabbergasted at the fact that he doesn't have a name to be called. "Wait, WHAT?! No way, you have to have a name! What else am I supposed to call you?!" She seemed to be taking this name matter quite seriously, as the woman promptly grabbed his shoulder and started shaking him violently despite her concern about his condition earlier. "Hrm... this is not good... you can't go around without a name..." The woman muttered to herself, walking around in circles as the Youkai watched her with apprehension, before she finally stops and said. "I know! Your name from now on will be Shun!" "Eeh?! What's with that ridiculous name?!" "What? It's cute, isn't it~?" And since, the Youkai who is now known as Shun lived under the same roof as the woman, whom had simply introduced herself as Ai. As he recuperated to his full health he was persuaded by Ai to go around the rest of the village in the meantime. Naturally he was quite hesitant but after days of being forcibly dragged around by the collar he just got used to it. At first barely meeting their eyes but within the first couple of weeks he had already started to become quite friendly with the neighbourhood's children, always being asked to hang out with them whenever possible. And it didn't take long for him to also be the villager's favourite man. To them Shun was a likeable, kind and helpful young man whom they would feel strange not meeting passing the street in the morning. The longer he stayed there in the village with the villagers, the more he were attached to that place and started to call it home. In fact, he felt even homelier staying with Ai and meeting with the rest of the villagers than back then when he was living amongst his own species. Time passed, he was having a happy life as a human being, together with his savior from a long time ago... Until one day. It's always that one life-changing day. Sometimes things change slowly, gradually. Sometimes, things change so damn drastically, you would think the world just likes to troll around with you and make you suffer. It was one evening, having just finished helping out the old fisherman from down the street, he went through his usual road, heading back home. It had been a really long day and he couldn't wait to taste Ai's specialty steamed fish. Oh, he could just smell it from a long way away, his heart fluttering at the mental image of her welcoming him back after a long day of work, eating dinner together, and then just having a good time before going to bed together for the night~ "Honey~ I'm ho-" He faltered. His voice dropped. The atmosphere suddenly turned glacial. His heart had probably stopped at the sight he hadn't seen since a few years ago. In that single second of realization, his life had taken a pitfall to the deepest of the abyss. Ai. Dead. In her own pool of blood at the red-spattered foyer. ...That's... ...No. NO! "AI!" With his voice cracking in shock and disbelief he rushed towards the immobile woman on the floor, crashing to his knees in desperation as he grasped her shoulder, trying to shake her back to the land of the living. "AI! AI, WAKE UP! WAKE UP, AI! You're not dead, right... RIGHT?! ANSWER ME, PLEASE!" Dying for an answer he raised his hand, placing it on her forehead. Immediately he regretted doing it. It's just a cold empty shell. Her life force had long since been gone. Her body felt cold, rigid and lifeless like a doll. However he tried talking to her, however he tried waking her up, the woman's body remained... a corpse. There was nothing in her. Nothing. She's dead. She's dead and she will never come back. It was a cold, hard and unpleasant truth that he would incinerate himself if he allowed himself to believe it, and anyone else to believe in it. She can't be dead... she can't be... "Girl was a tough one. T'was fun though, seeing her dance around trying to stay alive~" A low, deep, cold and harsh voice came from behind him. A voice that felt so distant in his memory that he could barely remember it, but so familiar in his heart it felt as though it was inside himself. "...You... no way... you...?" "Nice to see you again, uh... what do they call you now, Shun? Hahah! You sure made quite a name for yourself! Who named you, that human?" It was... no doubt. That voice... he was the very same fellow... the very same Youkai that tried to murder him five years ago... He didn't think he'd seen the last of him, but... but why... why in this situation... why involve Ai...?! Anger started to bubble uncontrollably inside him, his hand clenching into a fist so tightly he's cutting into himself, drawing trickles of blood from his hand. Fury and hatred washing over him like a tidal wave, common sense flickering in and out, his rage in danger of breaking out like a bomb. But no... he needs to keep his cool... Sup...press... his Youkai... instinct... He can't... he can't go back... to being a monster now... Ai wouldn't like that... "Oi, oi. You've gone soft. What's the matter with you? You're weaker than before you disappeared! Where's that Dragon Youkai you used to claim to be? Don't tell me that human made you weak Oh, but then again, you can't blame her," The voice behind him said with a scoff. "Humans are just that low, yes? Your fault for mixing with them in the first place!" That's it. Shun made quick work of the Youkai. In the next five seconds, there were only screams and yells of pain and agony. In the next two seconds, there were plea. Lastly there was silence that lasted through the whole night. Once upon a time, there was a Dragon Youkai named Shun, walking aimlessly under the moonlight without a goal, without a destination, without a hope, without happiness. His long scarlet hair shone dimly under the lunar glow as he made his way to wherever the wind takes him... ~~This is a story about a Youkai named Shun~~ Once upon a time in China there was a traveling Youkai named Shun, whom had dwelt with humans longer than they had known him. He travels around from villages to villages, cities to cities, making himself both famous and infamous by doing the one thing that he does best to support his living. The extermination of his own species that terrorizes the places he stops at, for money. Some had asked, why would he commit such unorthodox act of eliminating his own species? They could never get a straight answer from him and the only answer he would give is, "If you don't work, you don't eat," Now, while this COULD be considered as a legit business and service to offer considering their tight situation of being terrorized all the time, but there's one problem. His price is ridiculously high. So everywhere he goes, whenever there's a chance for him to do the only business he's good at, he would take advantage of it. It was either, stay as you are, or pay him to be free of misery forever. Naturally there had been talks, some suspected HE was the one whom had let the youkai loose on them in the first place. But there's no way to prove it, and they've definitely never caught him redhanded doing it. It's a bitter balance between gratitude and grudge, and every time, he was the one who controls the balance. Although... their suspicions aren't always off the hook. Thanks to Shun hunting down his own species, he had been pegged to be the enemies of youkai as well. So pretty much, everywhere he goes, there are chances that he himself would get attacked, thereby getting the place he was at in trouble as well. Time passes and things changes. As he went wandering around the small part of China, he realized that... he's not getting as much as he used to get. The youkai are appearing less and less frequently as civilization advances. This naturally puts him out of 'work' and he started to become less and less prominent among the citizens that he had turned from The Wandering Youkai to The Wandering Hobo. He tried doing conventional jobs, but more often than not he kept losing it no thanks to his greediness, asking big pays for a part-time factory job, or simply being too lazy for his own good. Old habits die hard. Well, at the very least he never got out of touch of the time, having been there himself to see everything change and evolve. Fed up with his lifestyle he decided to move out of China and to the world beyond. He heard there is a city in Japan called Hyakuji, and it was practically a magnet for toils and troubles. Seeing the place as a great business opportunity he sneaked into a cargo ship and went to Japan, and subsequently Hyakuji. And he found the place to be rather... interesting. To say the least. It's uh... not really his cup of tea though. |
