Just An Ordinary Magician~ Character Name: Kirisame Izumi Gender: Male Age: 18 Height: 172cm Weight: 52kg Description or Image of Character Appearance: Just an Ordinary Magician~ Occupation: Student / Pseudo-Ordinary Magician / Magic Store Owner / Collector (Burglar) Grade Level: 3nd Grade Powers/Abilities: Talent and Training ~ The Faux Magician Magic, the art of creating miracles out of nothingness. Someone who is trained in magic is capable of bending the natural laws of the world to their will. Supposedly those that can use magic are only those who are naturally born with the ability to perceive mana, the 'fuel' required for any magic to be actualized. Those can be obtained from the world around them, or they are born with a finite amount of it within them. For many, they are simply not born with the capability to use magic, lacking any capability to sense mana or even have a pool of them within them. Not a big deal, because they usually would not even bother with magic in the first place. What's unfortunate is when someone who actually wants to bother with it is just not given the chance to. This young mage is simply handicapped. It's hard to determine whether Izumi is a worthless, talentless magician who has no business trying to do what he does, or a prodigious genius of a regular person capable of grasping concepts and knowledges what many others like him could not. He has trained under his adoptive family for years and he has and will never be able to perform the magical miracles that he had always been dreaming of. At the same time, with how he naturally is, it's a wonder that he could even reach up to his level in the first place. Regardless of which end of the scale he is, it doesn't change the fact that he is not, and will never be a true magician. While not entirely lacking in it, the level of which he could perceive flows and concentration of mana in the world is... abysmal, at best. Think of someone with dulled senses, it's hard for them be able to properly perceive the world around them unless given sufficient stimuli. Look on the bright side though, at least he is not completely incapable of actually using magic, unlike those who are literally just not born for it. Magic in a Box ~ The Eastern Miracle It's impossible for Izumi to perform magic like other mages would traditionally. Not only is he incapable of perceiving flows of mana unless it explodes in his face (metaphorically, sometimes literally), he is also not born with sufficient amount of it inside him to even make any explosion in the first place. He refused to be deterred by the bad news when he first found out about it. But, he still needed help if he really wants to learn how to do magic, even for a little bit. As such, thanks to the old master of the Hyoudin household, despite fervent protest from his great-granddaughter, the young magician had been lent what is essentially a seal that binds him as a true member of the Hyoudin's family. He calls it the mini-Hakkero, literally "miniature-Eight Trigram Furnace" It's a small eight-sided wooden block that could easily fit in the pocket of his vest, with the eight elemental symbols carved and printed on its surface in a circle, and a crystal bearing the yin-yang symbol embedded into the center. Izumi himself couldn't be certain of the inner mechanics of this curious little 'device', but according to the old master Hyoudin, it's a combination of old Eastern and Western magic that allowed for magical knowledges of the Hyoudin family's magic to be passed down and being constantly accumulated to the last of the family's generation, imbued just for this occasion into some pseudoscientific inventions of his own that can then be carried around in a pocket. Of course, it didn't take much to convince Izumi at the time. Now he doubts if the old master was even telling the truth. At least though, even the young magician could give a little briefing on how this little device is supposed to work. In most situation, in order for a magic to be successful, the practitioner would require two things: mana, which acts pretty much as the fuel for any magic to work, and a kind of ceremony to convert said mana to the actual magic, be it incantations, spells, rituals, inscriptions, or any combination of those. For an easier understanding, one could think of the ceremony as the 'blueprint' of a magic, showing you how to re/create the final product, and mana being the 'parts' that makes up the magic's form. Now back to the mini-Hakkero. The little device, according to old master Hyoudin, contains all of the Hyoudin family's 'blueprints' that has been accumulated since the olden days, effectively acting as a kind of a 'guidebook' for Izumi to be able to perform the more intricate and delicate of magic. Any kind of 'blueprints' are useless by themselves if the 'parts' for it are not supplied. Normally it would have been enough for mages to simply draw the energy from the world around them, but other than a few very specific, improbable situation, it's often still impossible for Izumi to perceive them enough to draw mana from his surroundings. That's where the mini-Hakkero comes in, with it's actual primary function is to act as a kind of 'rechargeable battery' for mana, to compensate for the young magician's own lack of mana pool. How this function works is relatively simple. When not in use, the mini-Hakkero would passively collect mana from the surroundings and store them, and when the user needs it they simply draw it from the pool within the device. It's especially useful when magic needs to be performed at a place that's... inherently 'dry' of mana. The amount of mana that could be stored in the mini-Hakkero is virtually limitless, or at least, it's assumed to be so. It's hard to ascertain the exact specification of the device considering the nature of it, but from experimentation, the young magician could at least determine that a full twenty-four hours worth of charge could dish out enough magical and heat energy to cause irreparable, smoldering damage across the Hyoudin's garden, as well as blowing straight through the outer wall of the family's estate. It should be noted that with the aforementioned charge, the mini-Hakkero was able to sustain continuous discharge for about four to six seconds before dying out, suggesting that there is a limit to the energy output rate. For reasons (mostly to avoid the Hyoudin's great-granddaughter's wrath), that was the first and last time he had ever attempted to fully stress-test the mini-Hakkero. It's a powerful magical artifact for sure, but the user, being Izumi in this case, serves as an effective bottleneck for him to be able to utilize the mini-Hakkero to it's full potential. The mini-Hakkero, despite being effectively a box of magic with included 'blueprints' and 'parts', are pointless without someone or something to... 'assemble' the 'parts', so to speak. Due to the fact that the young magician is incapable of sensing minute traces of mana, he is actually completely unable to perform any kind of low-level magic that requires only a small amount of mana because the 'parts' would simply fade away before he could even see them. This may not sound like much of a handicap since he could simply forego the simpler spells in favor of the higher-level ones but again, his handicap comes into play. Higher-level magic requires an extensive amount of refinement and focus, something that the young magician just can not achieve at a short-notice. Like how it would take time for a practitioner to 'assemble' the 'parts' using the 'blueprints' to create magic, someone with the skills and ability would be able to weave magic that breaks the law of the world within minutes, even seconds, while Izumi, lacking neither the skill nor the ability, would take days, even weeks to complete even one proper magic. The most that he could do in the span of a second, is what has been mentioned above, the release of the stored mana in it's purest form possible, raw magical and heat energy that's more often than not only useful for major destruction. Otherwise however, 'enhancement' naturally becomes his forte. Across the Rainbow Bridge ~ The Witch's Flying Broom One of the very first things that came to mind when he was asked what he would like to do with magic, and that is to fly. Not by planes or using big bulky wings, but simply... fly, as free as the birds could, like it would be second nature to him. Naturally, he came to a 'flying broom'. Blame the little stories he would often read back when he was little. He actually found the perfect broom for it too, a besom broom stowed away at the corner in a large storehouse just across the front yard of the Hyoudin's estate. It took him two-and-a-half months of meticulous refinement and tireless research for Izumi to imbue the broom with the necessary magic, thus allowing it to... fly. It's a magic that negates the application of gravity onto the broom rather than something that provides lift or thrust. As such, there is no limit on it's working environment, be it high up in the air up to the void of space, or deep down underwater. The anti-gravity magic was only imparted onto the broom and thus does not negate the weight of the rider itself. Which was Izumi's first misconception of gravity and the first time he tries to ride it ended up with a very sore backside. Since then he's made various calibrations and fine-tuning onto the broom to suitably fit his needs that flying with it now is like second nature to him and only a sliver of a thought away. The broom appears to be self-sustaining, sharing the same kind of mana-collection function as the mini-Hakkero allowing it to stay in flight indefinitely. Running out of energy doesn't appear to be a problem regardless of how fast it can go. The young magician lacks the instrument that allows him to properly measure the top speed of the broom in flight, but he is confident that he could catch a Hayabusa in his arm. Before it violently scratched and pecked him all over and causing him to drop. It was also, extremely lucky for him, the time when he found out that the broom seem to have enough sentience of its own to dart over to him, just enough for him to catch himself before the ground does. It was also broken a while back by a fighter jet. ...Don't ask him about it. He manages to fix it with a new bamboo handle, and still as uncomfortable as it has always been for long flights. The World Beyond the Boundary ~ Cardinality Door His proudest, and quite possible the most personal project that he doesn't even intend to share his work with his adoptive family, until the great-granddaughter Hyoudin beat him up to spill the beans. She ended up letting him go, even apologizing (which was probably the first and last time she'll ever do so with him) about it after hearing his story though. It started with a little memory, a little idea and a little experimentation. Then there was a door, on the Hyoudin's storehouse just across the front yard of the Hyoudin estate to be exact. A very high-level magic that involves bending the very spatial fabric of the world, closing together two points on the plane and reducing the effective physical distance between them to no more than the width of a door. A year's worth of hard work, under the rain, sun, snow and wind. Major failures and minute successes, all so he could create a path straight to the old household that he abandoned a very long time ago. How it works is quite simple. While portal magic normally don't require a physical entrance, he simply uses one to be enchanted so he could use it any time he wants without spending more time actually creating the portal. The first and foremost thing that needs to be figured is where the exit should be, lest they wish to get lost in... wherever they might end up at. Other mages would be able to determine their exit across the world, through various different interferences, in matter of hours or minutes, sometimes even seconds for the truly skillful ones. Afterwards, it's a simple matter, ...in a sense, of tracing the path back to the mage, then opening up an entrance through which they can simply step through. It's a very powerful magic that requires extremely fine tuning and refinement due to the dangers and complexity of messing with the space-time fabric itself. As Izumi likes to believe though, nothing is impossible with magic. By imparting the magic onto a physical object and with some special tweaking of his own, he manages to create a special, permanent (at least until the magic runs out) portal of his own that can easily be... toggled, 'on' or 'off' with the right input. The very first pathway he made was from the very doorway of the Hyoudin's storehouse, to his old home before he came to be with the Hyoudin's family. Whenever he is required to do this another time, he will already have an exit, as in any doorways he's previously enchanted, with the coordinate 'saved'... somewhere with him. As he continues to create more 'entrances', those will automatically be connected to the existing pathways for as long as he specifies the 'exit' to be any of the connected doorways, and he will end up with a web of portals for his own personal use. Due to him not needing to begin the entire process from scratch coupled with his experience for having done it quite a lot of time actually, he is now capable of creating a new pathway within a week. Doorways that he had, and would turn to an 'entrance' will only be at places he knows he will visit quite frequently. Important doorways to take note would be the one at his own dormitory room, Yuki dormitory Room 314, and a small, single room stone and wooden... house, located deep within the forest of Hyakuji itself. Equipment You Have: The Flying Broom: Admittedly had been his best and only companion besides the two sole Hyoudin household's members for years. Mini-Hakkero: A magical nuclear reactor small enough to fit in his pocket. Dormitory Door: Not... exactly HIS, since it's the school's property. Linked to his web of many interconnected doors of portals. Lots of random stuff: Stuff he had collected over the course of his research, studies, experiments and tinkering, scattered all over his dormitory room, his room back at the Kirisame's Household, and his little DIY house in the middle of the forest. His stuff includes, but are not limited to books and tomes, raw ingredients collected from the forest, potion-making apparatuses, tools and building materials, and strangely enough, mushrooms. His pointy black wizard hat: That he made himself because of silliness. ...He is actually very good at sewing, better even than Alice, much to her chagrin. Residency Request: Room 414 of Yuki Dormitory Schedule: Homeroom Teacher: Hiro
Personality Description: They say that genius often comes paired with crazy, even a little bit. It may or may not apply to Izumi, but he certainly has some traits of both. 'An oddball', would be a fitting word for someone describing him. He is a very amiable and laid-back person who is also very openly social. It's easy to hold a conversation with him, often taking initiative rather than waiting to respond. He likes, or at least, doesn't mind being the center of attention, sometimes even going so far as to make himself so. He is quite proud, though far from egoistic, always strive to have a positive outlook in life and is very idealistic, bordering outright naivety. At least, all the traits mentioned above applies when he's in his comfort zone. It's hard to actually knock him out of it, but when he does, his personality takes a complete turn of the table, becoming very passive and painfully unwilling to take any kind of action, out of fear of making things worse than it already is, usually when the situation involves another person. The young mage also avoids any kind of conflict like the plague, and whenever he encounters one, will often try to find a way out of it and escape instead of confronting it. Personal History: The beginning of his life wasn't particularly pleasant, coming from a somewhat broken down piss poor family. Living in a small worn house that could be considered a shack with three siblings, a drunkard mother and an unemployed father, he had taken it to himself to be the most responsible member of the family, supporting all of them to the best of his ability. But despite being so determined he was way too young to be able to achieve anything by himself. Working honestly part-time doesn't pay much, sometimes he wouldn't get paid at all, or even given any work. Considering his usually messed up outlook first impression had never been good, oftentimes getting the cold shoulder from everyone around him. But despite that he kept trying... until he just can't stand it anymore. What can you expect from someone as young as him having to deal with all these stress? His family was in a constant state of disrepair, his parents were always fighting, never even once contributing to taking care of the family, he had to keep his siblings content with nothing more than the frikkin' cloth on his back, everything just piled up more and more until he finally snapped and just wants to get the hell out of everything. Screw this, what's the point of him being the responsible one? What was he getting out of this? Will this ever stop? One thing's for sure, he's not staying around anymore, he's not going to spend the rest of his life having to babysit his family! So one night, he made a decision. Without even once turning back, without even taking a moment to prepare, he stormed out of the house right in front of everyone, cutting his ties with the Kirisame family forever. Of course, that only meant that he had nowhere else to go. But in his mind anything is better than being stuck with that accursed family of his, even if he had to live like a dog on the street. It was probably a bit stupid of him to leave his life behind so wantonly like that, perhaps even mad. And living along wasn't particularly easy, going around looking for work as a homeless kid was even harder on him than as merely a poor kid. There was no way for him to earn an honest living, and considering the fact that he was still a child, the prospect of having to do bad things was quite scary. Empty stomach however forced him to convince himself that he was merely 'borrowing without asking', stealing food from stores and stalls to satiate his stomach. Naturally this does not bode well for his relationship with the citizens. But it really didn't take long for him to start getting fed-up with this lifestyle as well. It's just too much work. He kind of misses sleeping in bed, not having to run around for shelter when it's raining, or not having to 'borrow' food when he's hungry. At times whenever he's wandering around alone at the street in his haggard clothing he started thinking about the family he left behind, wondering whether he was in the wrong for leaving them and actually considered going back... He had seriously considered it one day, until he saw something that completely tore his mind off it. ![]() She's not just any girl. Looking as though she had come out of a storybook, a blond girl with a long blue skirt, white blouse and a large blue bow on her head, carrying a thick tome in her arm, accompanied by a... flying doll, carrying a shopping bag? The girl's look and demeanor suggested that she was from a highly respected group of people. Bourgeois, that is. But what interested him was less about her looks and behavior, but more of what she was doing at the moment. The boy's mouth fell open slightly in awe as he watched her talking merrily to the doll as though it was alive, and the doll responding to her like it really was alive. Isn't this what they call magic? He had heard of people using them, but this is the first time he had actually seen it in action... Questions started to pop up uncontrollably in his head. She knows how to use magic... where did she learn it? How does she do it? Think he could ask her where she learned it? Even as he started questioning himself this the girl was already leaving his sight. Fearing he might lose her he started following her, but not too close that she might notice him. He wanted to ask her directly but at the same time he was unsure, perhaps even afraid of what she might say considering his look at the moment. Excuse him if this made him look like a stalker. He continued following her, until unbeknownst to her, she led him to a particularly large house, ...Nay. A large house is an understatement. It was a mansion. The famous Hyoudin Mansion, in fact! He has heard of the entire family being a family of witches and wizards, but he never thought he would be so close to where they lived... As the girl approached the large cast iron gate it creaked open ominously, allowing the girl to pass through before slamming shut again. So this is where she lives...? Never thought she would be related to the Hyoudin... The boy wondered as he approached the front gate, all the while admiring the lavish construction of the whole structure. He wasn't wrong when he thought she was from a respected bunch. Part of him felt somewhat envious imagining how people like them live. Well, putting that aside, how is he supposed to meet anyone in this house? They're obviously way off his league, it's impossible to even interact with them- "UWAH!!!" A very close call that could have cost him an eyeball, or he was simply being shown mercy. A rapid streak of silver unexpectedly came up on him right in front of his face, and before he knew it he was staring at the very tip of a miniature doll-sized spear. Though it didn't take long for him to realize that... the very same doll he saw earlier with the girl was the one wielding the spear. Not to mention it certainly looked quite real, the nasty little glare the doll was giving him and the spear itself. "Why are you following me?" Suddenly came a sharp and stern voice from the other side of the gate, and peering past the doll's shoulder he saw the girl from earlier approaching with a look of disapproval on her face, her arms outstretched with faint silhouette of strings connected to the doll. The boy was having a hard time trying to explain himself as he could only stutter in response, unwilling to move in fear of the spear right in front of his eyes. His lack of answer only served to aggravate the girl even further as she repeated her words, "Answer me!", his eyeball in danger of being pierced by the little spear- "What is all the ruckus here, Alice?" -until he was saved by a voice from behind her. The girl turned around, and the doll dropped her weapon which then materialized into nothingness, as the doll floated back next to the girl. Now that he could take his breath, he finally saw who was it that distracted the girl. It was a tall and imposing old man with long silver beard and hair, wearing a deep green vest over a shirt, and green trousers. The look he was giving the boy though... paralyzed him to the core. The look of someone grand and powerful and can destroy you whenever he wishes for it. He dreaded the old man more than the spear on his face, not even daring to step back. Is he the owner of this place? Her father or something? As the old man approached him, he gave him a piercing and analyzing stare before saying, "What is your business here, boy?" It was only now did he remember why he was here in the first place. While he really wanted to just mention his reasoning, he was extremely apprehensive considering their great status. The boy feared that he would just be cast away again, part of him considering just giving up and leave. ...Of course, that was before remembering the life he had to return to if he just left. He would go back to that terrible life he had been so set on leaving behind. He hated his current life and he wanted to change. With that in mind the boy summoned up his courage and said unblinkingly to the old man with direct eye contact, "TAKE ME AS YOUR APPRENTICE!" His reaction was quite expected, though not as intense as the girl's, whom was practically gaping at him in disbelief. As for the old man, his eyes simply widened in surprise, before unexpectedly enough breaking into a loud booming laugh, which in turn surprised the boy as well. "Haha! You are a bold one, aren't you! I like that!" The old man said in amusement, the tense atmosphere from before disappearing completely as he raised his hand, placing it on the cast iron gate, making it melt out of the way for him to drag the boy through the gate before reforming it the way it was before. "Tell me boy! What's your name?" The old man asked him, patting him forcefully on the back. "Uh... well... My name, is uh... Kirisame... Izumi?" He said hesitantly, still at loss over the sudden turn of event. It's not... something he had actually expected would happen... "Izumi, was it?" The old man repeated with a big warm grin, patting him once again on the back. "Very well then! Let's start tomorrow, shall we? By the way, my name is Ryouki Hyoudin! You can just call me Ryou, I am not fond of formalities," His brain was in a complete disarray trying to put everything together when it's all happening so darn fast. So let me get this straight, he came here to ask a girl to learn how to perform magic, learned that she was in fact related to the famous Hyoudin family, met the big man of the family and was then accepted to become his apprentice in less than ten seconds? Still quite confused by all this he turned back to the girl, whose reaction was apparently JUST a small sigh of disapproval. "Do what you want, grandfather..." She said in defeat, before walking away with her doll accompanying her. "Don't mind her. She's not much of a social person," Ryouki said, noticing Izumi being a bit concerned about her lack of interest over what's happening. "But anyway, boy. Are you sure you're ready for this? Being a wizard is hard, you know," Izumi turned around to look at him, pausing slightly in his answer before a grin appeared on his face as well. "I'm ready for anything!" Hey, he's got this far, why stop now? "Excellent! We will start after lunch!" "Wait- what? I thought we're gonna start tomorrow?!" "TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE!" Mashed Potatoes? Nyaa |
