"OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE!" "That reaction is how I KNOW I did a good job!"

Hyakuji 2.0 Template Updated 6/30/2014 Due to personal relative inactivity, which was due to health reasons and such rather than choice, I've designed these changes to be relatively minor with a stipulated point at which they expand later on as I "catch up". This is marked as "Flavor" and "Future" respectively. Dec.2013 Character Name: Ian Hudibras Vaner, AKA Eugenia Camus Vaner Gender: Asexual (pronoun depends on current identity, default male.) Age: 15, though typically looks older. Height: Varies. Weight: Varies, though usually very heavy, about 250 kg at standard full mass. (His power is body mutation, so physical stats vary on his mood.) Birthday: November 11th. Voice: Armin Shimerman Theme: Orfgrad Description or Image of Character Appearance: Ian: ![]() Jean: ![]() . Occupation: Student, exterminator (via eating vermin and insect often), garbage disposal, oyster. Grade Level: 2nd Powers/ Abilities: Biokinesis: tl;dr What this is: Conservation of mass-stipulated shapeshifting. Ian is capable of mutating his body. A power this versatile is a headache-inducer for approval staff, so I'll try to be very clear about what he can and can't do. His body is like a set of Legos. He can reassemble the pieces to his whims, but is incapable of creating new pieces or replacing destroyed ones freely. On the offensive: Increasing his muscle mass/density across his body to amplify his physical strength is the main use for his power. Making multiple appendages, usually extra arms or tentacles, are another typical use. Bones are frequently utilized for armor plating or if he decides to make a bladed/spiked appendage. Defensive: For example, if someone cut his arm, he would be able to close the wound. Any lost blood would be gone, but he'd be able to keep himself from bleeding further, as well as making it seem as though he were never cut in the first place. If someone cut the whole arm off, he'd first close up the wound to keep from bleeding out. Then he'd try and stick the arm back on and reattach it. If the arm was destroyed, he'd have to make a new one out of biomass. Which means having to consume organic materials for raw supplies, preferably meat, although even wood or dirt will provide a (small) amount of biomass to work with. His body metabolizes materials nearly instantly, incorporating and distributing them across his self as needed, to the point where he doesn't even have a digestive set of organs anymore. Utilitarian: Ian has learned to produce a few insectile proteins instead of merely human ones. Silk, most relevantly, and thus he spins his own clothing, although he does make leather out of himself occasionally. Kind of disgusting, actually. No Spider-Man utility, though. Specific Weaknesses: Anything energy-based or cold-based is anathema to Ian's power. While he has a great resilience in the face of physical injuries, anything that causes cellular damage is something that he can't recover from directly. A burn wound will have to be sloughed off and later restored with biomass, he can't just close up the wound like he could to a cut. Cold outright stops his metabolism, so there's nothing he can do about frozen body parts. Electric shocks interfere with his body as a whole, and so disrupt his ability to control it. So on so forth. Lastly, he tires very quickly when using his ability, as a very active, very large body requires a lot of nutrition and resources that he'll run out of inevitably. Biomass: Ian starts each thread with 200 biomass points to work with, and loses 5 each post when using his powers. Each point represents 1 kilogram of organic matter constituting his body (Ian's body is remarkably dense, see below). By spending biomass, Ian is capable of mutating and rearranging himself, proportional to the mutation induced. 18 kilograms would net him an extra arm pair or two tentacles, for example. Ian is capable of restoring biomass by consuming organic matter. 5 kg of organic matter consumed equals 1 kg of usable biomass for Ian to maintain his body with. Needless to say, Ian is a hungry guy. If reduced to 10 or less Biomass, Ian is unable to use his non-consumptive powers and will desperately seek anything to eat, even dirt or wood. Cantrip Mass and Retroactive changes: It should be noted that, in most threads with Ian, the biomass counter is not tracked unless combat begins. One of Ian's most common behaviors is making minor tweaks to his body such as emphasizing a facial expression or using his mass to assist him in nonverbal articulation. If a fight breaks out, I will tally up the changes Ian made over the thread and adjust the Biomass counter accordingly. Explanation of Ian's Physiology: I've trimmed this down significantly from the gigantic biology rant it used to be. 1: Ian's cells are capable of de-differentiating back into stem cells at Ian's desire, allowing him to convert virtually any cell in his body (barring red blood cells, which lack nuclei) into another type of cell. This also renders him virtually immune to any disease, pathogen, or toxin, as he can simply metabolize it away, consume it, or expel it. Those with extensive biochemical knowledge however can create synthetic compounds capable of circumventing this or even countering it. 2: Ian's body is incredibly dense, the tissues and cells packed in much tighter than in a conventional living being. He packs twice as much mass into the same space as other living things, and this renders him very heavy. He has a difficult time swimming as a result, and is not buoyant in water like a human would be, though he can shed excess mass if strictly necessary or shift his body into a more buoyant shape. 3: As mentioned above, Ian lacks a digestive tract and simply converts his cells into macrophages in order to consume something and digest it. 4: Ian's DNA is quad-helical, after he successfully converted his chromosomes thanks to consuming flesh from the alien Valentine. This allows his body to process information at blisteringly fast speeds. 5: Ian has many smaller, secondary brains distributed through his body, usually 1 per limb and 3 in his torso. They function to control localized regions and store absorbed genetic information, relaying data to the primary brain for backup. If Ian's primary brain is destroyed, and all of his current secondary brains are intact, he can reform his primary brain flawlessly. If even one of his secondary brains is damaged, however, he cannot do this. More extensive analyses of his physiology, seldom relevant to matters at hand unless the subject is being brought up directly, can be found on my blog at these two entries, which are in-character written by Dr. Alexander Vaner: Macroscopic Bodily Structures and Base Anatomy. Genome Structure. There are quite a few relevant sections, however, that relate to very exact articulations of his biological abilities. For example: "An increase in muscle mass allows Ian to perform great feats of strength, but does not actually make his muscle tissue more durable to shear forces. While Ian could in theory grow enough muscle mass to produce the force needed to lift a car, its weight would immediately tear his muscles apart and likely injure him severely rather than produce lift." That said, what is written here on the profile is more than enough to explain what he can do, the blog entries above just explain the hows and whys. "Flavor" Powers: Note: These have no utility in terms of combat capacity. Magatama: Azoth: Ian, after selling his soul to the capital-d Devil, obtained a Magatama which he has named Azoth, which replaced it. The Magatama acts as a powerful energy source within Ian, enabling him to fuel his body's ravenous needs partially with magic. Alter Ego: Jean Vaner: Ian molds his body to look feminine and cutesy, also shifting his voice likewise. "Jean" is an appearance he sometimes takes on for the sake of messing around. However, as she's intentionally putting on an act of being sweeter than usual, Jean adjusts her neurotransmitters to be less aggressive and more perky, resulting in a temporary shift in personality. As a whole, Jean is nicer than Ian, but can lapse into being too cheerful and bubbly to get much done. Snap: Picking up a trick from pistol shrimp, Ian is capable of "cocking" his fingers back before snapping them fast enough to break the sound barrier, creating a gunshot noise, though of course no actual projectile. Pearl Creation: Ian's moneymaker. Self explanatory, Ian is capable of layering calcium compounds to create pearls within his body, having consumed plenty of oysters. It should be noted that, as Ian creates the pearls quickly, lacking any patience to spend much time on them, they are of lesser quality to naturally-formed pearls, though still usable in jewelry. One familiar with pearls, such as a jeweler, will be able to tell the difference easily due to a lack of luster or irregularities. Ian's pearls look too synthetic, basically. Milk and Honey: Ian is capable of creating honey, having devoured beehives on campus on sight. Metabolizing sugars and the appropriate enzymes, Ian can extrude honey from anywhere on his body. The same goes with milk. He developed this out of a desire to be helpful, but needless to say this is highly disturbing to others. 5 kilograms of biomass result in 1 liter of milk or honey. Chemical Biosynthesis: (Previous Season Upgrade) Protein Control: Silk Ian has mastered the usage of spider silk within his body, and is capable of infusing his flesh with this strong material. It has greater strength than steel, though not as high as Kevlar, but is tougher than both. By spending 30 Biomass, Ian can weave silk into his skin, granting him an ultra-tough hide. Likewise, by doubling the amount of Biomass spent on any other bodily construct, he can weave silk into the construct and make it especially strong and tough. For example, spending 10 biomass on a set of long claws for his fingers, then an additional 10 to infuse them with silk, results in what are essentially steel blades. Prokaryotic Mind: Ian's consciousness and ability to control his body are no longer bound to his brains. He still uses brain structures, primary and secondary, to both archive tissue templates, proteins, genes, and bodily structures, as well as to handle regulating and controlling unconscious functions. If Ian's brains are damaged or destroyed, he will have a more difficult time controlling his body and slow down, and also lose access to any non-human proteins (such as his spider silk synthesis power) if all of them are destroyed. So long as Ian has one brain intact, however, he can duplicate it to restore the others over a day's time. In addition, Ian keeps a bio-database of sorts in his room-closet as a sort of backup he can restore his "archives" from, though obviously this cannot be done unless he's actually there to copy the data back into his body's brains. The primary boon to detaching his will from his physical brain(s), however, is that he can control body parts separated from himself, though they must be macroscopic, and his awareness extends through them. If something gets separated from his body, he can still control that part of himself, and even mutate it. A perfect example of this new ability in proactive action, however, would be Ian creating a swarm of insects from his body, which could then fly around. They could then either perform reconnaissance individually or be used offensively. The amount of insects created corresponds to the amount of biomass he expends, obviously. However insects are extremely light so for balance's sake: The average dragonfly weighs about 3 grams, according to the TOTALLY reliable WikiAnswers, so it's easy to point out that 333 insects created per biomass point, each representing one kilogram, is absolutely unreasonable and equally absolutely ridiculous! I will instead say that Ian has a production rate of 1 insect per biomass point spent, under the logic that maintaining his awareness through each insect at a distance requires energy he expends biomass for, or simply that Ian's created insects are disturbingly large, depending on if they're being used for remote observation or offense. The initial reason Ian developed this ability, however, is to imitate mosquitoes with it. He gathers blood samples from all across Hyakuji this way, then reabsorbs the insects, hoping to vastly increase the genetic information available to his biological archives. When he realized that he could use it to remotely observe situations or simply control severed bits of his body, however, he pursued the idea even further. It should go without saying that "getting back" the biomass from a detached part of his body increases his biomass counter by the appropriate amount.
Drawbacks and Weaknesses: Riastrad: At any time when Ian is using his powers in a non-plot finale thread (including character arcs), a user, even one outside of the thread, may declare a Riastrad either by posting in the thread or PMing me. This causes Ian's body to go haywire at unfortunate times, and forces him to abort whatever he was doing in order to spend the post getting himself back under control. Overload: Times of extreme emotion, passion, or determination cause Ian's metabolism to run wild. If riled up sufficiently, Ian's body will consume 10 points of biomass per post rather than 5 until he calms down. Pigment Inability: Despite prolific other uses of his abilities, Ian is unable to duplicate natural pigments he was not born with. There's no logical reason for this, and if confronted, Ian gets very touchy about it. Simply, however, he's just not very good at the subject, much like how you or I in theory could learn calculus but in practice find it very difficult. In practice, this means that Ian has no hope of ever impersonating another character, as his tell-tale eyes, skin tone, and hair color persist, though his alter ego of Jean does work as a means to disguise. Unconscious Loser: This is an important note, so it gets its own section. Despite all of his pride and ego, Ian fundamentally wants to lose any fight he's in unless something important is at stake. Simply put, if Ian is in a non-plot-crucial fight against a non-rival, he will lose unless the situation is heavily in his favor. Either by holding back, making a lot more mistakes than usual, or playing around too much. This "weakness" is a case of me reconciling his love of war and my own distaste for PvP competitive roleplay. I have no intentions of creating an oppressive, unfun, overpowered character, nor playing him in a way that is unenjoyable to others. In-character, the justification for this is that Ian truly enjoys defeat. An eternal struggle, driving him to new heights and giving him an intense work ethic, is his favorite. A victory is just a confirmation that he's doing well, a loss teaches him a lesson to learn and grow from. The only exceptions to this rule are when Ian "gets serious", either for the sake of a battle thread against a plot villain where important things are at stake, or if he's identified someone as a "worthy opponent". More on that later. This weakness of his can basically be viewed as an unconscious power limiter that Ian isn't even aware that he puts on himself. When Ian does "get serious", however, he indulges in utter theatrics. So he's making a serious effort, but being a ham in the process. For example, he tends to play his own theme song on a small set of speakers kept inside his torso he can connect to his phone or computer and protrude from himself, usually prefixed with an introductory buildup incorporating a nuclear attack klaxon. He does this because it's fun and he genuinely enjoys himself, but also to play a bit of mind gaming. That said, comparing himself in action to a nuclear weapon, while quite the statement, is rather insensitive given Hyakuji is in freaking JAPAN. Equipment You Have: Has a smartphone, and carries around a small tablet computer within his torso, along with a few other trivial gadgets like an egg-sized speaker. Also typically has at least 1 Ian Pearl fully developed in his body somewhere. Recently, has decided to wear a full-blown circlet crown (made of brass, of course, not actual gold) for the sole sake of pissing off people who treat authority too reverently, basically Ian's strange mindset applied to the idea of wearing something "ironically". Residency Request: Yuki's Janitor Closet Schedule: Homeroom Teacher: Cerium Period 1: Science Period 2: Phys Ed LUNCH Period 3: Supernatural Studies Personality Description: "Chaotic Neutral" sums Ian up well, as he unhesitatingly uses adversarial means to reach good ends, with a gleeful embrace of anarchy and self-reliance. Expect nonstop jokes and heavy enthusiasm, Ian by default is manic and playful. Partly due to needing time to identify the right social cues to pick up on and which to use himself, lacking a reliable grasp on social nuance, he often feigns being a harmless idiot at first glance. However, he absolutely adores being a heckler and snarker. His first common response to brooding grimdark types is to begin launching into whatever he can be most annoying by doing to get under their skin. Likewise, if he perceives someone "trying too hard" in general, especially at being cool, he loses any sort of composure and will begin clowning around eagerly. Seriously, there are very few things in life that Ian enjoys more than screwing around with people whom he deems deserving of it. And given his limited shapeshifting, referred to as biokinesis by the guy himself, he's more than capable of some truly bizarre antics. At his very core, Ian is a goal-oriented thinker. He will work towards his goal of the moment and larger goals, and whatever gets him closer to what he wants is what he'll do. Whatever doesn't work is discarded or ignored. His goals either pertain to the improvement of himself or the teaching of some sort of lesson through adversarial means, depending on the situation. What most defines Ian is his ruthless pragmatism, with his unusual, Existentialist ethics following, topped with a love of enforcing karmic retribution through trickery and silly antics. To a lesser extent, one could summarize him as a "Pragmatic Hero - Comedic Sociopath - Karmic Trickster". Ian regards a person's pride as their most important feature of their identity. This is not arrogance, though to be sure he can be an egotist at times. It can be more accurately articulated as "honor" or "strength of character". More on this below. What started for him as a stubborn ego has matured into a worldview that celebrates the self. There is an understanding of nihilism in Ian's demeanor, but he has triumphed over it. The world has no innate purpose, meaning, or virtue. Everything is born of conflict and opposition, as everyone struggles to mean something. Meaning something means being distinctive, and thus Ian views the world as a global contest of merit. Therefore, everyone's highest act in life is self-definition. He will gladly compliment others on actions that he deems "self-defining", or basically anything that really sets them apart as a person, encouraging them to do so more often. Inverse, if Ian deems someone as settling for mediocrity, an easy solution, or just "going with the flow", he will be incited to scorn, making no attempt to hide his contempt. It is not difficult for Ian to like someone, and he's quite the extrovert and playful goofball, but a deeper appreciation of a person beyond "entertainment" comes slowly to him. Essentially, Ian views people by default as representations of ideas or as playmates, it takes him a long while to actually appreciate a person as a person. Commonly, Ian enjoys (in his head) teaching some sort of lesson through his antics, a procedure he deems a transaction of sorts. Amusement for him, a valuable learning experience for others. That said, he can entirely overestimate himself and wind up just making an idiot out of himself for no gain otherwise. It is silly and baffling to him that people do not try to make the most of themselves, so his antagonism takes a cue from absurdism at times as he does his best to make people realize how ridiculous they seem to him. It is a very effective weapon, he has learned, to make people realize that he isn't taking them seriously. Though, he does typically get annoyed when people declare him a Darwinist, warmonger, or someone with no regard for others. That's a simple label set to apply to him, and he dislikes them, and will proceed to rant heavily to refute such claims. His core personality traits: Amorality: Ian is ruthless, unrestrained, and supremely pragmatic. This doesn't mean he'll do evil for evil's sake, merely that he'll do whatever it is that he deems necessary to accomplish what he wants. Kicking a puppy for no reason? No, he rather likes them for loyalty. Kicking a hated enemy's puppy to provoke them? Possibly, all's fair in love and war, though he'd be displeased at the necessity if no other option was available. Kicking someone in the junk to provoke them into attacking him for a distraction? An enthusiastic, gleeful yes! Ambition: Power is synonymous with pride and identity, so it means a lot to Ian. He defines power as the ability to influence the world around him, most often physical or social. A particularly useful bond of friendship is as valuable to him as some sort of power-up artifact or rare gene specimen. He wants the power to make a difference in the world, the power to make changes happen, and the power to destroy that which threatens his values. However, he knows not to be stupid with this, and is seldom going to sacrifice a long-term benefit for a short-term one unless necessary. Pride: Rather than being haughty and narcissistic, Ian is satisfied and enthusiastic about himself. He is certain of how he needs to mean something, and seldom lords himself over others, though verbal praise is always welcome. If proven to be faulty or inferior, Ian will shrug it off with a laugh, remarking that he'll just need more time to get up to snuff. This extends all the way into being outright giddy if confronted with someone he deems better in some way, as it means he unquestionably has room to improve. He is, perhaps surprisingly given his temper, a cheerful loser. As mentioned, there is a further aspect of "strength of character" to his interpretation of pride. Basically, Ian will do anything for his pride, no matter how ruthless or even cruel it is, though he calculates its necessity and value carefully to measure if it is truly worthwhile. It can be likened to the greek "Arete" concept of excellence, somewhat. Essentially, Ian asks himself "Do I grow as a person in a way I would deem appealing by taking this action?" regarding everything. For example, he enjoys being a trickster, and fighting dirty, but against one he deems a "worthy opponent", he will set those things aside to carry out a straightforward battle to unquestionably settle the contest. If Ian's goal is power, amorality is his methodology and pride is his motive. Worthy Animosity: Related to that concept of "power driven by pride through pragmatism", Ian craves opposition, conflict, and rivalry, seeing them as the most potent impetuses for growth that can be found. He is always watching and observing others around him, hungering deeply for a worthwhile adversary, and to be one himself to a suitable person. What defines a "worthy opponent"? To Ian, it is someone with intense strength of character or personality, strong ideals, and the ability to fight for them. Power is his long-term motive, but a worthy opponent to slake his thirst for war and battle is what drives him along to it. Should Ian meet a character who has the personality and motivation he seeks, but not the strength to fight against him, he will sharply begin mentoring the character in any way he is able, He treats a "worthy opponent" quite respectfully, even grandly, making a very sharp distinction between an opponent and an enemy. Even if someone is absolutely heinous or repulsive to others, so long as they fight for what they strongly believe in, Ian will regard them as a competitive rival, not an enemy to be hated. A "worthy opponent" and a "hated enemy" are mutually exclusive concepts to Ian. In essence, Ian adores the idea of being a literary antagonist or foil in any way, though this is distinct from his trickster antics. If Ian genuinely finds someone he deems "worthy", he will stop screwing around, get deadly serious if grandiose, and make his intentions clear, revealing an inner core persona of theatric grandeur tempered by utter bloodlust. Example dialogue: "Someone like you only comes along rarely. Someone I can appreciate, admire, and hunger to overcome. Do not let me, I beg of you. Strive for triumph, defeat me in as many ways as you can! Again and again, spur me to overcome. Now, desirable adversary, plunge with me into the fires of war and conflict!" Trickery and Life's Art: Not only deceiving others, but fulfilling the role of the classical Trickster. Making people ask questions, drawing attention to absurd things he sees in life, and actually having quite the philosophical bent. One can pacify Ian with a philosophical conversation, though few seem to think of him as intelligent enough for it. Despite playing himself up as an idiot often, Ian appreciates finer things like philosophy and art, seeing value in "viral ideas" that propagate due to their usefulness and concise way of inducing a larger perspective. Of all the people to enjoy arts, poetry, music, and philosophy, Ian does. Enthusiasm: Despite having a core of pure pragmatism, a ruthless ego, and infinite ambition, Ian esteems zeal and determination highly. He is thus extremely prone to theatrics and over-the-top behavior, preferring it strongly to any sort of subtlety, and getting past his many play acts will reveal a person who is just living life to the fullest and gleefully trying to prompt others into doing the same. Challenge: Between personal growth, a lust for conflict, deep ambition, and his pride, it is not surprising, likely, that Ian regards a challenge as valuable. This concept is heavily related to his sense of "worthy animosity". In essence, doing things, to quote JFK, "not because they are easy, but because they are hard". Taking an easy way out of a situation never sits well with Ian, though if something has an entirely reasonable, direct, and simple solution he'll take it. Either way, anything that provides a challenge or a chance for him to actually have difficulty doing something is something he'll savor deeply, even thanking others for such chances. Reiterating, he's also very delighted to lose, contrary to what one may expect of such a proud person. This is because a loss is something he regards as proof that he still has room to grow and develop. In Ian's own words: "Defeat is a lesson, a victory is merely confirmation." If this requires Ian "holding back", he will, however, not do so, and decline personal involvement unless truly provoked. He regards holding back as a deep insult, given or taken. Ian has no desire to "bully" other characters. Ian's full philosophy can be found here. Personality Detail - Constant Antagonism, and Why He's SUCH a Jerk: He's a Blood Knight who PREFERS losing, to the point it's a power limiter of sorts (see above) and, despite him hating the idea of people holding back, he does so without realizing the majority of the time. If he triumphs, it doesn't mean anything, if he gets his butt kicked it teaches him a lesson. Combine that with how he understands that why yes, he is an asshole, he LIKES being an asshole, and he genuinely takes pleasure in killing and violence, and that those traits are WRONG and REALLY fucked-up. Ian feels that with so many people all struggling to survive and mean something, it is difficult to create meaning for oneself in the world. And he's aware that he's NOT a good guy, and is really only good at destroying, devouring, killing, and eating. The result is that he's basically a huge dick all the time to test the others and see how they handle duress and conflict. (And admittedly because it is VERY fun for him.) If they attack him, he gets to see how they fare, and if he learns something through defeat, he will accept the loss with genuine gratitude and enthusiastic cheer. If they're good-natured or composed enough to handle his antics, he takes that to mean they have good mental fortitude. Basically, Ian's accepted that the world has flaws, and he's not someone who can help with them. To him, it's a deep tragedy that meaninglessness is the default, and many people do not have the freedom to engage in the meritocracy he perceives. Mind you, he doesn't care about the people, he cares about the IDEA of freedom and ambition. So what does he do? His mindset is that every great hero needs a great antagonist to motivate them. So he pisses off everyone he can to try and spur them on, basically. Personal History: Always being a bit weird, Ian had an uneventful childhood. Never quite getting along with other children, he was usually a pariah. The world just flat-out didn't make sense to him. Why did people do things a particular way? Who decided what social standards were worthy of widespread acceptance? Deciding that the world was a nutty place, he became very uninhibited over time. A world that didn't make sense wasn't worth taking seriously. He couldn't even take other people seriously, often laughing and teasing wherever he went. This didn't make him popular. One time when some other kids decided to get back at him for making fun of them all the time, his power manifested for the first time. Now substantially worried over the fact he had a budding sociopath on his hands, his adoptive father Alexander Vaner enrolled him in various institutions and educational facilities. Finding learning to be enjoyable, Ian grew fond of examining how things worked and picking them apart (often literally). Learning of Hyakuji and other such institutions, he grew jealous of the idea that his ability wasn't unique. However, he saw the opportunity to grow stronger. If he could be the mightiest person of them all, or in the whole world, then maybe his life would have actual value, not just conventional value. His father decided that sending him off to Hyakuji was an acceptable idea because at the very least the other students and faculty would keep him in check. And hopefully teach Ian some empathy. The first thing he did upon arriving was request to be a student janitor. Cleaning would let him practice his talents without bringing suspicion, as well as endear him to the faculty. An odd plan, but it made sense to him. He would learn, and grow powerful. He would train, and grow powerful. He would probably get his ass kicked on multiple occasions, but he'd learn from mistakes. Being the most supremely powerful individual to ever live seemed like an inevitability. That didn't work well. After many examples of Ian's own failings confronting him, he grew desperate. Selling his soul and even his memories within Makai, to the Devil himself, Ian gained a Magatama and a new chance at life. Starting over, Ian found himself back at square one. At first, he was even worse than his old self, attacking the alien Valentine in a rage upon discovering her notion of inherent superiority. Later attempting to betray Hyakuji for power, and being swatted like a fly in the process, only saved by a teacher's intervention and consuming his adoptive father who had found him, Ian was miserable. And yet, he realized something. He couldn't just do whatever he wanted, recklessly confident that consequences would never affect him. He'd lost his pride, his only family, and any hope of being accepted at Hyakuji. The words of the teacher who saved him, however, combined with the selfless display, shocked Ian to the core. He'd been shown that empathy really did exist in the world. Thanks to unwitting advice from the school newspaper, Ian began to examine social networks online to get a better idea of how people behaved. Noticing that females were treated with more slack, Ian quickly devised a disguise as Jean Vaner. Now with a second chance at getting to know Hyakuji, Jean actually managed to befriend a very small few people, and gained increasing understanding of human behavior. Mellowing her behavior, Jean came to enjoy the community of Hyakuji, and found less violent ways of expressing herself. When the call for the final showdown across time with the Machine Empire came, she eagerly signed up for a chance at revenge and redemption. Revealing herself as Ian, thirsty for payback, he fully intended to attack the Time Eater with all his ferocity. Cue Yuzuki Saito trying to use diplomacy, joined by several others. Power and rage did not win the day. Kindness did. Utterly baffled, Ian resolved to learn more. No longer feeling shame at his attempted betrayal, viewing himself as having made up for it (or at least trying to), Ian re-entered Hyakuji's community with unfettered curiosity, absolutely perplexed at how things worked. He'd do whatever he could to learn, hungry for knowledge. His father, revived by the fact that the Machine Empire never existed, would guide him, though Alexander demanded an explanation for everything first. Since that time, Ian has been reluctant to interact with his father, and the two have grown distant from each other, taking a relationship more akin to business partners on certain matters than father and son. It depresses them both, but neither of them have told the other about how saddened they are by the situation. Edited by Pancake Mix, Jul 9 2014, 11:02 PM.
