LOCATION: BARCELONA SPAIN
TIME: 4:30 AM

The streets of Barcelona were quiet, more so than usual at least, as night fell over the city. Few were still up or already awake but most slept even through the loud clamor of noise in the small apartment as the girls appeared twelve hours later. Back home it'd be noon but here it was the middle of the night, perhaps quite a shock. Despite the fact they'd left so late at night.

A man stood, ready to receive them. Offering them a seat as the trip was often quite a sensory overload. <"I'm glad you ladies could make it.. We've finally tracked the two down but they're almost ready to move on. We must be quick."> He said in thick heavily accented Spanish.

"Ah, he says we're in a hurry." A second man said, abridging the information in Japanese. "Gordon and Alexa are about to move, we need to hurry.."

The girls appeared in the streets of Barcelona, and all of the senses that Star had been deprived of came rushing back at once. The photomancer stumbled forward as her feet touched the ground, feeling a sudden bout of nausea. Her sight and her hearing came back without any trouble, as the spell had been designed to do, but her sense of time--her innate ability to know the sun's position relative to where she was whether it was night or day--skipped ahead suddenly, from the intense energy of high noon to the muted tones of just before dawn.

She placed her hand on a lamp post to catch herself and took a deep breath, covering her eyes with her hand as her body shifted through and made the necessary adjustments. The solar sensors in her skin that allowed her to capture light energy had still been active for a few moments after she stepped through the gate, and the shock from every portion of exposed skin trying to capture light energy that wasn't there was about the same feeling one would get if they were feverish and someone dumped a bucket of ice water on them.

Star shuddered as she felt them shut down and her body adjust, the nausea leaving her. She took a deep breath.

"I officially hate those things," she said, straightening up and taking the seat that the man offered her.

She listened as they spoke, glancing at Jen and Emiko. She knew that Jen spoke Spanish, but Emiko probably didn't, so the interpreter would be useful for her. She nodded once, getting to her feet and checking her store of light. It was full, which meant that she hadn't leaked any light on the trip over. Good. She'd need it to be full. She closed her eyes, pinpointing the sun's position now that her body had gotten over the shock.

About three hours until dawn...

She would just have to make her store of light last for three hours.

"I'm ready," she said. She turned to the first man. <Jen and I speak Spanish, by the way, so don't worry about that,> she said.

"Hey, Star-chan... you okay there?" Jen asked as Star appeared slightly wobbly at the end of their trip, as the photomancer grabbed a nearby lamp post for support, placing an arm around Star to help her stand up.

"I officially hate those things," Star commented as Jen checked the time on her phone, setting the time to that of their current time zone, which is UTC +1 hour, as Star slowly recovered from her strange spell of nausea - which the purple-haired girl guessed must have had something to do with being in broad daylight one "moment", and then suddenly finding herself underneath a night sky the next.

"I couldn't agree more," Jen grumbled as they were soon approached by a man who apparently was ready to receive them, offering them a seat. Judging from the accent present in the man's Spanish, Jen deduced that he wasn't a local; although another man was also present to act as an interpreter - which worked to Emiko's benefit as unlike Jen or Star, she didn't appear to speak or understand Spanish.

"Alright then, where are we headed next?"

Emiko stumbled forward with a small groan as she lifted up a hand, pressing it against her temple and tried to get a hum of her surroundings. But she hardly saw anything at all as bright spots danced before her eyes like spastic worms, and she had to blink rapidly several times in an effort to adjust her eyes to the dim streetlights. Oliver had been right; the flash of light and loud bang certainly made the 12 hour teleportation a less favorable means to travel. "I really hope we get to take a plane on the way back home," she said loudly to the two other girls since her ears were still ringing, and then added mentally to herself, I could get some homework done then, I got that assignment to do...

Glancing to the side Emiko saw the two men approaching them but also how Jen was helping Star, who seemed to have a stronger reaction to the side effects of the teleportation compared to the two other girls. Stepping to their side the violet-eyed girl was glad to hear that both of them were fine and then listened to the two men as they spoke. For a moment there Emiko had been worried that their informants only knew Spanish, which she hardly understood any of by the way. If there had been more time than just one hour to prepare then she would have bought a Spanish-Japanese dictionary and at least try to learn some basic phrases. But thankfully the other man spoke Japanese and she could sigh with relief and actually understand what was going on without having to ask Jennifer-chan or Star-chan to translate it for her.

Feeling just as ready as Star and Jen, albeit at the same time secretly apprehensive to what her role was going to be in this, Emiko nodded in understanding and was ready to follow the men in a hurry as time obviously was of the essence.

Emiko would suddenly hear something... Something from not long before they arrived. The room's conversation before they arrived..

forgive The use of a TLer website. I am not fluent

The three were ushered out into the streets and through the back entrance. "A.e y.. .her. ...?" Came a voice through broken static into their ears.

".on't s.. an.th..g ... the... y..r e..my ... ...lo? h...."

The line went silent.

"Is something the matter girls?" Came the voice of the leader as he stopped at a corner, eyeing them curiously. Clearly he'd noticed their reactions to the sudden static over their comms though apparently he had no idea what they were shocked about.

As they all got ready to leave Emiko suddenly got the familiar feeling as her powers kicked in and the latest conversation in the room replayed in her mind. With some difficulty she recognized the informants voices and had enough time to hear them speak in Spanish before she, and the two other girls, were shown out via the backdoor.

Feeling the cool winter air nipping her cheeks Emi couldn’t help but think how some Spanish words were very similar to English. ‘Segurno’ probably meant ‘sure’, ‘plan’ obviously meant plan and ‘functionar’ was more than likely ‘function’. Sure plan function… she slowly repeated to herself, Hmm… Maybe it was ‘Are you sure the plan will function?’ a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips. For someone who didn’t know any Spanish she was doing quite well decoding it. Although the rest was a little hard to understand and except for being able to translate that ‘communications were blocked’ there wasn’t much more Emiko could translate without some context.

When she coincidentally a few moments later only had static in her ear Emi suddenly got a bad feeling and quizzically looked at the leader of the group as he asked if something was wrong. Pressing a finger against the device she answered, “I seem to have some problems with my headset. I heard some static but now it is completely silent.” She turned to Star and Jen so see if they were having the same problem or if it was only hers that was malfunctioning, “How about you guys? Are your comms also acting up?”

Star's eyes widened as her communicator suddenly came to life, and she stopped, raising one hand to her ear. She frowned, listening hard. It was almost impossible to hear over the static, but she could pretty much guess from the few syllables she did hear that the speaker was talking in Spanish, which didn't exactly tell her much considering that she was...you know...in Spain.

The photomancer's frown deepened as the line went dead. That was odd. Was Jameson trying to reach them, or was it some form of interference? She glanced over at Jen, knowing that if it had anything to do with technology, her roommate would be likely to know about it.

"Mine was acting strange too," she said, replying to Emiko in Japanese. "Did you hear someone talking?"

Jen followed their guides, just as Star and Emiko did as they were ushered to the back entrance of a building, remembering what Jameson had said about maintaining contact with them as soon as they arrived. "Star, Emi-chan..." Jen whispered to the other two girls. "Does it strike you as a little odd that Jameson hasn't contacted us to give a status report?" Jen asked, just as a burst of static came over the headset. Amidst the static, Jen thought she heard someone trying to say something, although she could hardly make anything out due to the interference, hearing nothing more than garbled gibberish before the line went dead.

“I seem to have some problems with my headset. I heard some static but now it is completely silent.” Emiko said as she turned to Star and Jen, speaking to them in Japanese. “How about you guys? Are your comms also acting up?”

"Mine was acting strange too," Star said, replying to Emiko in Japanese. "Did you hear someone talking?"

"I thought I heard a voice amid all the static before the line went dead - it was as if someone was trying to warn us of something. Can't make out anything else though; it's way too garbled. I suspect the transmission was jammed by external interferences though, so be on your guard," the purple-haired girl added, also speaking in Japanese as she gave the other two girls a nod.

"I see... so the comms have been shut off?" One of the men said surprised. "I can't believe that they were able to do that! They must be getting ready to act!" He said turning. "Listen this building is where they are. Go inside and to the top floor, using the rear access.." He turned back to them. "No time to waste if they've cut comms. They must know we're pursuing!"

Star turned towards the man at his announcement. As a rule of thumb, she was immediately skeptical of anyone who told her to charge in blind, but there wasn't any time to argue. He was right about one thing. Any time they wasted here asking for clarification was time that Gordon and Alexa could be using to get away. She shot Jen a glance. She took off at a run, heading for the rear entrance.

This had trap written all over it. But between herself, Jen, and Emiko, if anyone had to catch the trap, it would have to be her. Jen was sneaky and resourceful, and she was sure that Jen would get more or less the same idea from the situation, so she trusted her roommate to have her back.

They must be getting ready to act!" he continued, turning towards the girls with urgency written all over his face. Jen looked wordlessly at Star as the photomancer glanced at her - they were essentially charging in blind; something which doesn't sit well with her as there was always the possibility of an ambush being set up for them. However, if they took the time to think things through there was also a chance of Alexa and Gordon giving them a slip. And as Star took off at a run, Jen also followed, running after Star. Star would handle the dangerous part, while she would adjust her tactics as the situation changes. No words were spoken as Jen knew full well Star would have her back covered, and vice-versa.

“’Are you sure the plan will function?’” Emiko quoted in a hushed whisper to herself, “’The communications have been blocked’”. It had been the men’s voices and obviously they had some sort of plan. Was the plan the one the girls were going to be part of? The plan they were executing now? If so, then why did the communications need to be blocked? Didn’t that counteract the whole operation? They needed to keep in touch for the plan to work, and like Jennifer-chan had pointed out; why hadn’t Jameson contacted them?

Dread was slowly creeping up on Emi, urging her to run and take the girls with her before something really bad happened. But at the same time, how had the Spanish men known when they would arrive and where via the teleportation cards? Didn’t that mean that Jameson and Edmund Drake trusted them? And who was Emiko kidding, didn’t even know Spanish! It was more than possible that she was mistaken. Without any context and only understanding a few select words she could have misunderstood everything. There had been several words that she didn’t understand. They might as well have said ‘I sure hope this plan will function’ and ‘They haven’t blocked the communications, that is a good sign’.

"Listen, this building is where they are. Go inside and to the top floor, using the rear access.. No time to waste if they've cut comms. They must know we're pursuing!"

Emiko swallowed. Did she doubt them because she was scared? Because she was getting cold feet and was afraid to get hurt or even killed? No… No! I want to help and I will. Nodding to the men as confirmation that she understood Emi then turning to the girls saying in a steady tone, “Come, lets go.”

She took off after Star and Jen as they ran around the building towards the back entrance but before Star could enter Emiko stopped her and said urgently, “Stop. Wait.” Looking at the girls Emi hurried to explain her train of thoughts, “We all know that we are taking a huge risk by just barging in like this. So…” Emiko paused for a second and her violet eyes seemed to burn with a sudden intensity, “Let me go in first,” She didn’t wait for Jen’s and Star’s comments before continuing, “You know my power; I can listen in on past conversations. So, if I step in and listen for a few minutes I’ll immediately know if something fishy is going on and what they are planning. Then I’ll come back out and tell you, or send a signal if it is OK to enter or not.” Emiko’s eyes found Star’s, “If this is a trap then we can’t let our fire power to be taken out, right?' her tone became very persuasive and confident, "First, we throw in the bait,” she pointed at herself, “to lure them out and expose them. Then, you take them out together with Jen, like a true fighting duo.”

It was a good plan. It was a logical plan. And hopefully her teammates would see it as well. It was suicide to let the one person who could do a lot of damage with her powers get captured and possibly killed. Either way, if they agreed or not, Emiko was determined. She knew she wasn’t anything to have in a showdown and would only be a burden, but this? This she could do.

The weak will die while the strong survive. Right?

With that Emiko turned around, pulled open the backdoor forcefully and entered the building, jerking as the door loudly snapped close behind her and she was shrouded in darkness.

As she entered into the building she'd find....

Nothing!

No conversations, no people. Just a pitch black room full of absolutely nothing.

"Gordon is leaving via helipad up top.. Alexa is getting her stuff downstairs." One of the men said to Emiko. He turned back through the door to the other two girls. "Purple hair, you're like Alexa, no? No powers. You and this one will go downstairs. Star, you should head up."

"Trap... You two really don't trust us but we're Irregulars, you know? We're inheritors of Sherlock's will.."

And, seeing as once again they didn't have much choice it wasn't very long at all until Star was heading up the long winding stairs to the rooftop, and the others were headed down for Alexa.

Downstairs Emiko would begin to hear conversational English. Direct commands and the responses to suck. "Go to the basement. Get me weapons." Etc, in the voice of a young girl. At the very least confirming they were on the trail of a young girl in a position of authority.

Emiko had mixed feelings as she stood there in silence. She had been absolutely certain that she would hear something or that someone would come attacking, so when nothing happened she kind of felt… disappointed? Stop being silly, she mentally told herself while one of the Spanish men spoke to the girls who were all gathered now, You didn’t get hurt or kidnapped, that is something good. We are continuing the mission as a team.

However, it was evident that the girls needed to split up, and while Emiko was reluctant to let star go up to the roof on her own there wasn’t much choice.

Heading downstairs as quickly but silently as she could Emi paused now and then to listen, both with her powers and for a sign of movement on the basement level. When she heard the young female assassin’s voice it was confirmed that the Spanish men had been correct. “She is down here,” Emiko turned around to whisper to Jennifer, “and she is heavily armed and not alone…”

Well, that didn't turn out as expected. But Star wasn't going to apologize for her suspicions. They were only natural, given the circumstances. How was she supposed to know whether or not they were being played?

Star nodded once at the Spanish man's instructions, turning towards Jen and Emiko. Left to handle Gordon on her own? She didn't like it, but she could see the reasoning behind it. "Good luck, guys. Stay safe," she said, before looking up through the long winding stairs at the rooftop. The stairs stretched on for what seemed like forever, so Star took a deep breath, bouncing once in place to calm herself down and shaking out her hands.

She stretched out her right hand, focusing carefully, and did the same thing that she did in England, a single ribbon of light winding tightly around her arm and her waist at the same time as it shot up towards the top of the stairs. The ribbon wound tightly around the railing and suddenly shot upward, pulling Star up to the top. She placed her hand on the railing as she reached the top and pulled herself over to the side, the ribbon of light dissipating as she moved over to the rooftop.
