The night air was bitingly cold now, and Chizu was again aware of how underdressed she was for the weather. She landed lightly on the ground in front of Hiro Tsukasa's store, looking up. The aeromancer had noticed a light in the window as she was flying in. She knew that he would still be awake, after all that they had done earlier that day. She had no clue when the victory party finally let out, having left fairly early on.

It was late, and the store was closed, but it wasn't her first late night trip to this place. And Chizu knew she needed to talk to him, before she changed her mind.

She sighed, her breath misting in front of her face as she rang the doorbell.

A few moments passed, though it perhaps felt much longer for Chizu waiting outside in the cool night air, and then ultimately the door to Eldritch Influence cracked just ever so slightly. After this split-second action to check who it was Hiro opened the door fully giving Chizu a rather odd gaze as if curious to why she was here. Hiro was dressed mostly like usual except his white shirt remained unbuttoned and looked as if it had been thrown on hastily before he came to answer the door.

"Chizu," Hiro spoke with a bit of confusion in his voice as he proceeded to touch on the most obvious reason she might turn up, "There's nothing up with Arcadia right now..." Still, Chizu would have to know this. Arcadia had developed perfect methods for relaying information to Fire Division when it really counted. So then what was this?

"Did something happen? Are you okay?" Hiro asked as his air of confusion dropped into one of concern. Suddenly, the night's air began to take effect on the lightly dressed leader of Arcadia and shivering slightly he realized his inquiry was keeping Chizu stuck at the door.

"What am I saying, heh," Hiro stepped back giving space for Chizu to enter inside, "How about we get out of the cold first before I riddle you with questions?"

The moments passed, one after another. The wind flowed around Chizu, none of it touching her, but even the still air itself was cold. The aeromancer forced herself to remain still, though, not fidgeting in place as the door opened a crack.

Was she sure about this? Once it was over, she would have no time for regrets.

But then again, it wasn't as if she could just take her decision back. She had come all the way out here. Of course, she was sure.

"Mm," said Chizu, nodding her head as he mentioned coming inside. She stepped into the store, letting the door close behind her.

Chizu looked around. It wasn't the first time she had come to Eldritch Influence in the middle of the night. In fact, after a little over three years in Arcadia, she was sure she could have gotten to the place from Hyakuji with her eyes closed. She wouldn't have known it existed had it not been for Arcadia, though. Bookstores weren't exactly her favorite places to be.

She wondered if that would change after tonight.

"Nothing happened," she said, answering Hiro's question. "I'm fine. It's just..." She sighed, shaking her head. Where was she supposed to begin?

"...I've been in Arcadia for over three years," said Chizu, looking away. "Jameson and I are probably the only people still around here who remember when you started it. You asked us to do one thing that first meeting--not to reveal Arcadia's existence to anyone. Not family. Not friends. Not lovers. And I was okay with that, because I didn't have family. I didn't have friends. I was never in love."

She hugged her arm close to herself. "So I gave my word," she continued. "...And we did some crazy things. And we fought, and we risked our lives. I can't think of any battle as hard as the one we just went through, but...that's okay. I know what we fought for. I don't regret it. I would do it again..."

She looked up at Hiro, meeting his eyes. Her own voice quavered a little as she spoke, but there was still strength left in her eyes when she looked at him. "...I don't want you to think I'm saying this because I was afraid. And I don't want you to think I'm saying this because I'm lazy or selfish, and that I would rather have a peaceful life than fight to protect the people I care about. But my word means a lot to me. It's one of the few things about me that people can always count on. I will always keep my word."

"...Today, though...I almost broke it. I almost told somebody about Arcadia. And I know that if I carry on as I am, I will break my word, or I'll break myself to keep it. And that's why I came here to tell you..."

She took a deep breath .

"I want to quit Arcadia."

Hiro listened in silence keeping a rather neutral look upon his face. He obviously didn't like where things were going, but at the same time he had always made a promise with Arcadia never to force things on people. He knew what she was getting at well before she ever decided to reach the conclusion. Still, as their eyes met Hiro could see the conflict within Chizu. If she stayed in Arcadia as things were now it would crush her. As Chizu vocalized her desire, Hiro knew he couldn't tell her no.

"I see," Hiro mumbled quietly, "Well you should know the answer I'll give you. You did the right thing coming to talk about it first rather than after the fact. We've already had one tough mess recently from situations like this. But regardless, in one night you've made more of a contribution to protecting the world than many Hyakuji students will in their entire lives."

"Jameson is busy with his own thing anymore," Hiro added shuffling a little where he stood, "And I'd hate to lose you as well, but I made a promise with how I would run Arcadia. If this is what you need then you've done enough. I don't think anyone would ever call you selfish over something like this. However, you know what this means right? Just like I won't break that promise, I also can't break Arcadia's policies."

Moving forward, Hiro stood directly before Chizu as he raised his hands and gently took hold of her face from each side. Carefully, he tilted her gaze until their eyes met directly unable to do anything at all other than stare at one another. "So then tell me once more, Chizu Yamamura," Hiro whispered, "What is it you want?" It may have seemed unorthodox or perhaps even unprofessional looking at it as a third party. However, in truth Hiro had already covertly began the ritual to wipe Chizu's memories of Arcadia and all events relating to it. The eye contact was a requirement. Now that it had begun, he just needed her to state again the situation just to have her retirement official.

He had thought about talking through the situation. Maybe learning the exact particulars of what brought about this decision. However, the pain Chizu was feeling happened to be more than clear. Ultimately, the reasons didn't matter and whether he felt they were valid or not, they had an impact on her. If their discussion led her to second thoughts, then he might end up prolonging this suffering. Hiro wouldn't be responsible for something like that. He'd been selfish enough over the years.

Chizu took a breath as Hiro placed his hands on either side of her face, tilting her head up slightly to meet his eyes. Her resolve wavered for a moment, her crimson eyes wide as she stared at him. They slowly filled with tears, gleaming slightly in the dim light. She understood the significance of the eye contact to memories. Some time ago, she tried to kill someone whose powers operated on the same principle--memory reading based off eye contact.

Eyes are the window to the soul...

"So tell me once more, Chizu Yamamura. What is it you want?"

Her mouth opened, but the words wouldn't come out. What did she want? Of course she wanted to quit Arcadia. She had thought that to herself, resolved to do that ever since she left Nickle's side. But, now standing here, staring at Hiro, getting ready to finalize it...her heart ached.

Images flashed into her mind. Jameson at the top of the hotel, Lavender standing with her against the Heartless, Damon and Coryn at her side all the way back then, Star's resolute face as she faced Chizu, her Persona Fenrir taking shape in front of her, and all the way back to the beginning, Hiro telling them what Arcadia would be about. She remembered how it felt to transform into her uniform for the first time, back when she was 15 and unsure of her powers, back when she was nothing more than a scrawny delinquent with a potty mouth who wanted to prove herself in a fight.

And for a moment in her mind, she saw herself as she had been--a young freshman with waist-length silver hair, dressed with an Arcadia coat that looked almost too formal on her shoulders and a permanent scowl on her face. Strong on the outside, broken on the inside, on a quest for revenge.

How much had changed since then?

She had actually become someone she could live with now.

And she wouldn't remember any of it.

It hurts...

It won't hurt in the morning.

But I want it to...

I don't ever want to forget...

All those lessons hurt...

...but they made me...

...strong...

...This feeling...

...it's everyone's warmth...

...I want to always...always...

...remember them.

She drew in sharp breath, almost a sob, as tears trickled down her cheeks, over Hiro's hands. Her fists clenched at her side, but she didn't look away.

"I..." she began.

Another sob.

"...I want..."

The door to Eldritch influenced opened and the sound of a bell ringing accompanied it. Nickle had been praying he’d been dreaming, had prayed it hadn’t been real. And yet here he was, watching the sight before him unfold. Chizu and Hiro, with eyes locked, Hiro’s shirt hanging open and his hands on Chizu’s face, seemingly drawing her in with his eyes and Chizu’s eyes filled with tears.

There were few who had seen Chizu with eyes like that. Nickle was one of those few. But, now, to see her and Hiro like this? How long…had this been going on?

Nickle’s eyes sparked, the emotions from that time Hiro had kissed Chizu at the festival boiling to the surface again. A misplaced emotion he couldn’t quite describe. Hatred? Anger? Betrayal? All of these things seemed to rush through and out of his mind before being dismissed for just one. A burning urge for an explanation before any other emotions were released.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nickle had woken up a few minutes after Chizu had left his home, having been caught in a deep slumber with somewhat unsettling visions. Visions and reams of shadow beasts, of monochrome coloured cloaks flying in-between these monsterous dark forms and expelling them in bright flashes of light.

He couldn’t make sense of it at all. Yet the scene lifted and faded away and, he could see himself, as if floating like a ghost from above, flying across a sleeping Hyakuji and coming to land along a road he knew all too well Downtown, the road where Eldritch Influence was located.

By this point, the dream seemed to make sense as Nickle slept. A vision of a battle against demon-like creatures and then himself walking towards Eldritch Influence? It just seemed natural that Dream-Nickle would go to Dream-Hiro for advice or to ask for help about this. His vision shifted back into his own body as he opened the door, to see Hiro and Chizu mere inches away from each others faces, eyes looking deeply into one anothers.

Dream-Nickle would try to reach out to them, reaching for them, but ultimately being pulled away by what felt like 1000 hands, pulling him back into the sky across Hyakuji and then causing him to wake up in his own bed in a cold sweat and breathing heavily.

When Nickle had awoken to find Chizu vacant from his bed and the whole of his house, he had to know…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here he stood, clad in hastily thrown on clothes he could use in public, looking at the exact scene he dreamed about unfolding. He had no idea what had drawn him to Eldritch Influence, at least through a vision like he’d had, but now his mind was racing, thinking back to everything Chizu had said.

About promises.

About not being able to tell him anything.

About how it would be best that he didn’t know, because he couldn’t follow.

His mind didn’t want to believe it, couldn’t….and yet…

The lights that were on flickered slightly as Nickle tried to contain himself, but...

"You bastard!" he shouted, rushing at Hiro, "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?" his fist went flying for Hiro's face.

This is it then, Chizu, Hiro thought to himself as she began to utter the exact phrase he needed for the ritual, You might forget, but I'll make sure Arcadia always remembers their first Ace and the amazing person she's become. Seeing the tears roll over the side of his hands, Hiro couldn't help but feel terrible about the entire situation. To some degree he felt responsible. He was the one who had drafted her into Arcadia to begin with. Still, he knew if she stayed as things were now that down the road there would be more severe tears. Like it or not, this is what had to happen.

From off to the side, the bell of Eldritch Influence rang out its cheery tone announcing a guest. However, Hiro paid no attention. The ritual needed perfect form and he couldn't just stop it now for some new issue. A few final words and then everything would be over and Chizu could get on with her life. But then...

"You bastard!" he shouted, rushing at Hiro, "WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!?" his fist went flying for Hiro's face.

Nickle's fist easily impacted the distracted Mage square in the side of his face. For Chizu it would be almost like an abrupt flash as all at once the strange feeling of the ritual would vanish and Hiro's eyes had vanished from her gaze becoming replaced with an all too familiar arm. From the ground, Hiro winced in pain as he placed a hand on the side of his head where the blow had struck.

"Grrrr," Hiro growled in obvious anger as he began to rise to his feet, "You arrogant asshole... first forcing her to hide your relationship... and now this... IF YOU HAD ANY IDEA OF THE SACRIFICE SHE WAS MAKING FOR YOU!!!" Enraged, Hiro sprang up shouting with fury. His other hand, which had remained mostly hidden from view as he was on the floor, glowed with a green aura as if it had been bolstered and strengthened with magical energy. Wasting no time at all, Hiro rushed back towards Nickle aiming to strike him in the center of his face with the magically-charged punch.

"Gah!"

Nickle felt Hiro's fist impact his face, stepping backwards from the blow and clutching his face for a moment, a single trail of blood coming from Nickle's lip. "FUCK YOU! I never forced anything!

"Chizu wanted to be in this relationship as much as I did! What the hell, were you doing to her, wizard!? What's going on!?" Nickle lunged back and Hiro, not going to punch him this time, but aiming to tackle him around his shoulders and pin him.

Nickle couldn't understand it, his head was a complete mess. First a dream about Hiro and Chizu being together here, then seeing them together here. At every turn Hiro had been there. Their relationship had been a secret, but Nickle had not intended to keep it that way forever, then Hiro came along and kissed Chizu and forced things ahead faster than intended. And now here they were in a similar situation.

Nickle should have kept a more level head, he should have kept calmer, but the thoughts running through his head had taken away all reason.

"Was it you!? Was it you who made her keep things secret from me!? What's going on here!?"

It was like getting hit by a sudden splash of cold water.

One minute, she was staring into Hiro's eyes, feeling her memories leaving her. The next, she was thrust abruptly out of it, and was staring at Nickle's arm. Chizu blinked, stunned, as she reflexively took a step back, her eyes landing on the scene in front of her. Nickle was here. Why was Nickle here?

Her eyes widened as the scene continued to unfold, her mind still processing everything that was happening. Nickle had burst in. Nickle had punched Hiro. Hiro had punched Nickle back. They were brawling now, screaming at each other and...

Her memories! Why did she still have them?

Chizu lowered her eyes as the situation sunk in, her fingers slowly clenching into fists. "Nickle..." she began, her voice soft. "...you..."

"YOU IDIOT!"

In the blink of an eye, Chizu was in the air, her foot flying towards Nickle's face. She twisted around in the air and bent her leg, her foot clipping his chin and moving upwards. The aeromancer landed on the ground beside him, an angry look on her face and tears freely making their way down her cheeks. Her fists were clenched at her side, and they were shaking.

It looked as though she was tempted to do more than that, but was forcibly restraining herself.

"I was doing this FOR YOU!" she said. "I was going to quit for you..."

Nickle was still mainting a hold on Hiro, wrestling to stay on top and his mind being ruled by only by a white hot anger. Nickle just couldn't think straight and then.

CRACK

The sound of Nickle's lower jawline clacking shut was almost synonymous with Chizu shouting at him as she kicked him, sending him flying off of Hiro and rolling onto the floor. Nickle rolled once, beforming coming to a stop, grabbing his lower jaw and breifly massaging it and rearranging it it breifly as a burning pain shot through his head. However, it was a good thing as the kick actually calmed Nickle down and although his head was still spinning a bit, at least he wasn't angry.

He heard Chizu's words echoing in his head, over and over again her heard her words resounding through his mind and slowly, Nickle began to breath more slowly, gaining control of his sense. He pulled himself off the floor and to his feet, wiping the blood from his chin. The anger was still there, it wouldn't subside that easily, although Nickle had at the very least reigned in his temper.

He looked at Hiro and then to Chizu, "What were you doing for me!? What were you going to quit? I'm getting tired of all this secrecy. You say you're taking off an never coming back and then leave me hanging, wondering why I can't help you!" Nickle clenched his fists, trying to keep his powers from acting reflexively. He had no intention of using them, but when he got this angry they tended to spark on their own.

He looked to Hiro, his eyes stern and his breathing slow and deep. He should apologise to him, once he was calmer. He then turned back to Chizu, waiting for an answer.

"Chizu, please just tell me!"

As Nickle charged at him once more, Hiro began to raise his arms and cast another spell so he could effectively block the punch. However, this never came into play as Chizu quite literally side-swiped Nickle making his own attack null and avoid. Frowning in anger, Hiro shook his head slowly. Inside he was still angry that he'd even accuse her of something like this; despite the situation. However, now that he had a split second to think, he realized if he continued on it was only going to make things worse.

"Think for a minute, dumb-ass," Hiro answered angrily as he shook his head slowly, "Do you really believe Chizu would do something like that?" It angered the mage to an extreme degree. Chizu was not only a vital element for Arcadia, but by this point a good friend. To see Nickle act in such a way that Hiro could only view as selfish was infuriating.

As things calmed down to some degree, Hiro watched on as Nickle tried to question Chizu directly for the answer. This was it. The unavoidable scenario that Chizu had been hoping to nullify. Now it was staring her down head on. However, Hiro knew what he had to do. Even if he was far more used to being a school teacher than the leader of a secret supernatural force, Hiro knew well the responsibilities of the leader. If there was a problem for one of those under his command, responsibility for the issue fell to him. This was how it had to be. It seemed there was still fallout from Rasputin's machinations to deal with.

"You don't deserve an answer from her," Hiro spoke up without giving Chizu a chance to reply, "So I'll tell you myself. She was here because of me, but not for what you are thinking. For quite some time now... I've been leading a secret organization, Arcadia, devoted to combating supernatural threats within and beyond Hyakuji. I'm sure you've heard the rumors that go on from time to time around the school between students: the ones about the weird people at night in black outfits. Despite the moral implications, I have been using my class at the school as a means to gauge students with a high aptitude towards dealing with the supernatural and secretly recruiting them. Lavender-sensei is in on it too. Chizu was one of our first members."

"That arrangement was going on long before this," Hiro waved his hand back and forth between the two implying their relationship, "But still... Chizu was here tonight to ask that I relieve her from Arcadia despite the strict consequences of doing so. And all because she did not want to keep anything secret from you or have to lie about it all."

"Anything else you'd like to ruin tonight, Mr. Awesome, or can we leave my book store in one piece and let me get back to meditating?" Hiro's sarcasm was still dry with anger and in truth hiding the cogs turning in his mind. It had to come out either way now, but it was still a breach for Arcadia. Now there were several ways the situation could play out and like it or not Hiro had to see the matter to one of these conclusions. Perhaps, Damon's scenario could be created again. If not, worst case scenario, Hiro hoped all of Arcadia would be sufficient to restrain Nickle long enough for him to play magic on his memories of the night's events. Certainly not a situation that Hiro wanted to see played out.

Chizu was shaking.

She knew that it made her look weak. She knew that it made her look emotional. But she couldn't bring herself to stop. Honestly, it was all she could do to not either break down completely or fly into a rage. Her fists were clenched at her side as Nickle spoke, her arms trembling.

How dare he? How dare he?!?

Even if he didn't know everything she had been through, he should have known better than that.

She was glad that Hiro spoke up and answered for her. She didn't think that she could. The whole time Hiro explained the situation, Chizu glared at Nickle, doing her best to keep herself contained and in place. The air in the bookstore had gone deathly still, a warning sign for anyone who knew her.

"There," she said, when Hiro was finished. "You've got your answer. Happy now?"

Nickle glared at Hiro. Of course he didn’t think Chizu would cheat on him, that thought had never entered his mind. What had entered his mind was the possibility that Hiro would have been pulling off some kind of charm or love-spell. How else could Nickle have been dreaming of such a thing and then drawn here to find it was happening? He was damn sure he wasn’t one to have premonitions.

Even if it hadn’t turned out that way, one’s mind tended to leap to conclusions after such events, no matter who you were.
When a man sees the person he loves in the hands of someone who had taken a cheap shot to make out with her, it is near impossible to stay calm. One’s mind simply does not process an alternate situation, especially this late at night.

Nickle acted the way he did not because he did not trust Chizu, but a fear had gripped him. A fear that someone else had found a way to take her away from him. Nickle shifted from his position to face Hiro, scowling slightly.

“Don’t lecture me sorcerer. Had you been in my position and-” Nickle stopped himself short, reigning in his anger once more. That wasn’t going to get him anywhere and it was certainly not going to put Hiro in a better mood. So for that moment, he simply shut up and listened, his blood still hot, but his mind at least receptive.

As Hiro spoke of the Arcadian organisation, Nickle had indeed heard the rumours, perhaps even spotted such individuals himself on the odd occasion, but had thought nothing of it, having not even recognised them. As he spoke of the length of time that Chizu had been in Arcadia, Nickle looked towards her for a moment, his expression softening slightly as the cogs in his head began to turn. As Hiro finished, Nickle’s brow grew somewhat stern again. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

He then heard Chizu speak, her voice angry and rightfully so to a degree, as she could not have understood the primal reason for himself launching himself at Hiro. However, there was still anger in Nickle voice, even if it had become level and more controlled now.

“No….no I’m not happy.”

He started to shake his head, gritting his teeth for a moment, “Chizu I never wanted you to quit anything. I never wanted you to do anything like this for me. All I wanted was to know what was happening.” He walked over to her, locking eyes with the aeromancer “You might have forgotten, but I wouldn’t have. I would not have forgotten that feeling of being left completely cut-off from helping you. I wouldn’t have forgotten that something was making you keep secrets from me. And I would have noticed the change in you after your memories would have been erased. Your strength and confidence is only a few of the traits I admire in you, and this Aracadia Organisation seems to have brought out even more of that. i don't want to be the reason for it to end” She didn’t break her word, she hadn’t told anything about Arcadia, like she’d promised. But where did that leave the situation now?

Nickle’s hand was opening and closing, a twitch he often got when he simply didn’t know what to do or make sense of something. He looked towards Hiro, “If you knew about this Hiro, why didn’t you say something to me? Neither Chizu or I would have had to go through any of this. We’ve fought together enough times for you to know you can rely on me.”

Nickle ran a hand through his hair in frustration, gripping his fringe lightly, “All this because I had a dream about this damn shop and you two, that felt so real that it had my gut instinct compel me to come here….”

"Tch," Hiro scoffed as Nickle started to lecture him but stopped, "Had I been in your position I would have found out the truth on my own before taking any sort of action. You and I are both a lot of things. One of those is a teacher at Hyakuji High School. Another happens to be having a lot of power. We can't go willy-nilly slinging our power around without consideration over matters of love when we don't know the reality of the situation at hand."

As Nickle began to speak to Chizu directly about things, Hiro placed a hand to his forehead in annoyance as he turned from the duo giving them some measure of space to have the moment they needed. What a mess. Just when he felt like everything was looking up having overcome Cthulhu all these new problems, perhaps trivial in comparison but no less frustrating, began popping up.

And then, of course, Nickle came to the bigger matter now. "Why didn't I tell you?" Hiro repeated as he spun back around, "Because Arcadia doesn't concern you and it's a matter of highest secrecy. Ultimately, your relationship with Chizu and how it is going is of no concern for Arcadia. That might sound harsh, but it applies to us all. Even my own wants and desires. In light of the things Arcadia deals with something like that pales in comparison. You can't comprehend the notion, but I know Chizu has to understand. She wouldn't have asked to quit otherwise."

"Still, man," Hiro sighed in frustration rubbing his forehead again, "This is the same situation Damon put me in. And barely any time later. We only really have two choices at this point. Either I go ahead with letting Chizu go from Arcadia and wipe both your minds. Or if you're serious about not wanting Chizu to quit then I suppose you'll have to join as well, Nickle. Well, that or I can wipe your mind of tonight but somehow I feel that's just going to put me back on a one way street to being decked in the face and I'd rather avoid a stupid decision when it's that obvious."

Chizu stubbornly turned away from Nickle as he walked over to her, her fists clenched at her sides and her eyes fixed at a point on the floor. But as he spoke, she slowly exhaled, the tension leaving her back and shoulders. Some of the anger left her expression, but she still didn't turn towards him, her eyes lowered. What was she supposed to say? This was exactly the sort of thing she had hoped to avoid...

As Hiro told Nickle that in the grand scheme of things, their relationship didn't matter, Chizu sighed, turning her head. "He's right," she said, walking over to him. She still didn't look right at him, her arms folded. "We all took the same oath. He couldn't tell you, for the same reason that I couldn't. It's not about reliability, or trust. It just is. If you know about us without being a member, you'll get dragged into things you don't need to be involved in. And because of the way the organization works, our enemies don't know who we really are either. If they find a link between our Arcadia selves and our real selves..."

She shook her head. Even if it was over, she couldn't forget Rasputin's threat. He had never made good on it. Was it the anonymity their uniforms afforded them that had helped them there, or did he just run out of time?

She sighed, running a hand through her hair as Hiro mentioned Damon. "Damon...honestly...he can be an idiot sometimes." She rolled her eyes, glancing up at Nickle. "Anyway, I guess that's all beside the point now. Go ahead and make your decision." She didn't know how she felt about Hiro potentially allowing Nickle to join Arcadia. On one hand, she wouldn't have to keep secrets from him anymore.

But on the other...did she really want it to happen this way?
