Shivering slightly in the cold Emiko was wearing her grey winter coat, snow boots and a light blue cap with matching gloves and scarf that she got during the winter break. She was waiting for Deus to arrive and had assumed that she was first in place, but maybe he already was somewhere around checking out the competition? Emi spun around, walking in a small circle while squinting her eyes as the white snow reflected the sunlight. They were really lucky with the weather today, the whole week had been windy, cold and grey but now those dark clouds were gone and the sun was shining down on the beautiful winter landscape of Hyakuji. It was a great day for some friendly completion in the snow.

Emiko didn’t know what the prices were yet, actually no one knew and it was part of the allure, but they had all been promised that it was going to be good and worth their time. Five teams were going to compete in three different categories today and the team that had accumulated the most points at the end would be the winner. First up was a simple snow sculpture competition where the teams had to impress the judges with their creativity to get high points. The second installment of the competition would be a speedy snow race down a slope, being the fastest down to the finish line was essential to get high scores. For the finale there would be a snowball aim challenge to give the contestants a final chance to gain points and possibly win the fantastic but unknown prize. It was going to be a fun day for sure.

"Where is he?" Emiko mumbled to herself, pushing down her glove to glance at her watch after not being able to spot him.

Deus wandered up at his own pace, a bit late but not by much. That was typical of him, to not be in a hurry for anything. Despite being highly motivated to win whatever prize there was he was fine with taking his time since he was already on time anyhow. For him on time was practically early! Though he doubted Emiko would see it that way, knowing her she'd gotten here way early like a dunce.

He spotted her and blew into his hands to warm them. Despite the gloves it was already the bitterest coldest part of winter and now even coats and gloves did very little to stop the frigid air from piercing deep through him. He HATED the cold and found this sort of weather to be miserable, as she might recall. So this had all better be worth it or else she'd be getting a word or two from him.

Well, for now he'd just do his best to win. After all there was no way to win if he gave up before he even started trying. He wandered over to her and leaned over placing an arm on her shoulder, leaning against her to try and knock her off balance. "OH ho. Got here without me? To cool to be seen with me? Why did you come first? We coulda left the dorms at the same time. I was expecting a nice breakfast as payment!" He said before easing up the pressure on her and turning.

"So these idiots are our competition?" He said loudly so that everyone could hear him. "Seems like it'll be easier than I had imagine.." He said looking around before smiling to himself. In his mind it was already in the bag.

Emiko let out a small grunt as something heavy suddenly leaned on her, pushing her off balance, before immediately jolting as she heard Deus’ voice and realized that he was the one supporting himself on her. She was stunned by his sudden appearance and when he started inquiring why she had left without him a pink blush spread across her cheeks. Emiko hated how she seemed to be blushing almost all the time now. With her face turned away from him to conceal her cheeks Emi tried to push him off and away from her, ignoring to answer his questions since the reason she hadn’t waited was part of her new tactic to handle her feelings for him; never being alone. It was much easier to pretend that everything was normal when others were around, but when it was just the two of them Emiko felt like it was too… intimate and she feared slipping up in her behavior.

“Deus!” Emiko gasped as she heard his insult and jerked him to the side when the two of them got a few angry glares; they could forget making a good impression now. “Hush! They can hear you!” she chided glancing around at the competitors worriedly and dragging him off to the side away from the others. “Let’s talk strategy instead of insulting the others, shall we?”

All contestants knew already what ‘sports’ they were going to compete in, so everyone could talk strategy and for example already decide what kind of snow sculpture to make.

~

It was now time for the first competition to kick off and the five teams were all gathered in a clearing. Each team had a big pile of snow to their left and a few tools to aid them in making a sculpture that hopefully would impress the judges. As a man walked forward and spoke everyone silenced enough so that he could be heard.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Radio Lavu-Lavu 101,3 Winter Competition!” At this point Emiko fidgeted a little as she stood beside Deus; she hadn’t even told him how come she was part of this completion. But there wasn’t any time to explain now as the man continued. “You are all going to compete in three different fun categories and the first up is snow sculpture making! When I blow the whistle you will have 20 minutes to create and finish the most spectacular sculpture possible! If you haven’t completed it in time for judging, points will sadly be subtracted,” the man called out to them loudly yet very enthusiastically. “There is an amazing secret prize on the line so make sure you do your best!” Raising a whistle to his mouth and a stopwatch he yelled “Okay? In the name of Lavu-Lavu; Ready. Set. GO!”

And with those words the man blew his whistle and the teams rushed to start digging in the snow pile closest to them. Although, unbeknownst to Emiko and Deus, but would soon be brought to their attention as they started using their tools, was the fact that a saboteur was present. Deus had been right about there not being much of a competition among the other teams but one person knew what the secret prize was and he was determined to get it. But he would have to do something about Deus’ outspoken confidence; there was no way he was going to let a dumb blonde win this completion.

"There's only one thing we can sculpt with the kind of beauty we need....." Deus struck a dashing pose as if to say 'me'. However eve as he did so he cracked into a grin before setting. "Ahh... Well there is always that tactic.." He moved over to the tools and picked one up before the handle suddenly fell completely off the tool.

He eyed it with a glower. He turned to the others before glancing back to Emiko and towards the others. There was no way this was chance. He pulled back his sleeves and dipped his hands into the snow allowing his gloves to soak in the coal ice. It was painfully cold but without tools they'd need to use their hands and their hands would melt the snow. His gloves at least could be chilled enough to stop them from melting it...

"You gather it up, I'll sculpt it." He said, resolved. The fact was he didn't want her to have to make her hands as frigid as his. If some asshole wanted to play he'd play alright! This only awoke the tiny spark of fighting spirit within him. Some idiot thought he could cheat and win?! Deus fingers dug small nooks and grannies, packing and carving away expertly! He was going to show this jerk just what he was made of! He'd taken sculpting for years back at the mansion!

Rolling her eyes as Deus struck a pose Emiko started to dig on the snow and make a tall compact pile as the base of their sculpture. However, just like Deus’ tool, the handle of her little shovel broke and on top of that it cracked, rendering it useless. Looking back at Deus with a mouth open in both surprise and realization Emi knew that he was thinking the same thing; this was no coincidence, someone was targeting them because everyone else didn’t seem to have a problem at all with their tools. Feeling the stress of time ticking down Emiko nodded in reply with a short “Unh~” and started using her hands to gather the snow instead of struggling with a broken shovel.

As they worked intensely on their sculpture the host of the competition called out that there was only five minutes left. Looking at the others Emiko noticed that despite their disadvantage of having no usable tools their sculpture looked better than most of them. Although, there was one team that obviously was their strongest competition; they had made a sculpture that looked like a water fountain and they even had small snow props that looked like birds sitting on on the edge. “How did they manage to make that in only fifteen minutes?” Emiko mumbled to herself, completely stunned by the sight of the snow fountain. Had they been practicing? It was precisely then at that thought that the girl of that team looked up and noticed Emiko watching them. The girl, a redhead, gave Emi a cold, almost menacing stare, before saying something to her partner making him look at Emiko and Deus with a small grin. Feeling almost uneasy under their scrutiny Emiko turned her violet eyes back to Deus, and helped him finish their sculpture just as time ran out and everyone had to put their tools down and step to the side.

Standing there while waiting for the judge to come Emiko was staring at Deus’ hands, wondering if he even had any feeling left in his fingers after doing all the detailed work on their sculpture. Her own were actually warm but her embarrassment made her hesitate several moments before removing her gloves and taking his hands in hers to warm them up. With burning cheeks and avoiding his gaze by looking to the side Emiko stated the obvious in her usual calm voice, “Your hands are cold.”

He glanced to her flashing her a small confident smile as he took her hand rather gratefully. He couldn't complain right now, his hands were bitterly cold and he really could hurt them if he tried to act prideful at this point. For now all he could do is rely on this small kindness and use it to warm up his fingers. As soon as they weren't hurting so much he slipped on his still damp gloves and began working them together to dry them out more, taking breaks to use her hand as a warmer when necessary.

He'd managed to make a fairly competent sculpture in the time allotted. He'd even used the judge as a model for most of it, filling in bits of Emiko when he needed someone closer for details. It was a pretty good piece, if a bit simple. He doubted they'd beat the fountain but they're probably still place highly compared to the others.

Well all he needed to do was stay in until the athletic events. He was stronger there and sabotage was less likely. He'd just need to keep an eye on Emiko unless they tried to hurt her or something sinister like that. Underhanded bastards really were the worst of the worst.

They didn’t win the sculpture contest of course, not when their main competitors seemed to be professionals at it, but Emiko and Deus did come on a good solid second place which proved that they wouldn’t let themselves be messed with. They could handle both bad-luck and adversity. Besides, a little sabotage was nothing compared to what they had been through.

“I can’t believe it! Second place!” Emiko exclaimed happily as they were slowly walking towards the tables and benches where coffee, hot chocolate and sandwiches was being served to the contestants. “I was honestly worried for a moment there when every single tool we touched started to break but you really pulled through, Deus,” she punched his arm playfully and then started to walk backwards in front of him, the sound of snow crunching under her boots. “You never told me you knew sculpting! I was very impressed when I saw the finished result,” a small blush suddenly colored her cold cheeks as she remembered how Deus had asked her to stay still a couple of times so that he could get a few details right.

Forcing herself to think about something else Emiko continued with a laugh, “Oh! Did you see that Team 2 actually made a snowman? I guess they weren’t that prepared. Although it was very cute with the fedora and eyepatch. Kinda reminds me of someone..." She paused for a second before switching subjects, "But, you know, we might actually have a chance of winning this competition. If the race goes well and I don't miss targets at snowball aim competition we can win! We don't even know what the prize is but I'm sure it is worth it.” The girl finally finished talking and was just walking backwards in front of Deus with a big grin on her face. She was having a really fun and exciting day today. Of course, the fact that she was with Deus and wasn't acting weird or awkward was probably another reason why she was enjoying herself so much. It felt like normal.

What awaited all teams now was a short 10-minute break so that everyone could get themselves warmed up again with coffee or hot chocolate and grab a sandwich. Then everyone would be called to the slope where the next competition was going to be held; snow racing!

"Heh... you think someone like me can be dissuaded by a small time amatuer like this? It's dangerous to underestimate me, you know?" He said with that same old confident smile as he turned towards her placing his hands on her face and letting her cheeks warm them. The fact was they really did hurt. He couldn't help but feel the pain from that time even now. But he wasn't going to let it show on his face. His hands would be fine in the end, partly thanks to her help. Another thing he wouldn't be sharing with her.

He sighed heavily and shook his head. "Man... These amateurs aren't even on my level." He said as he turned and eyed the snowman as if in mocking contempt. He then turned to the fountain and glared with intense anger. They were clearly the threat here on a number of levels. He'd simply have to be wary of them in the future. They might even go so far as to harm Emiko...

He wouldn't allow that, for certain. After all he'd already decided that for the time being Emiko was his 'friend' and he would keep it that way. He had been hesitant to make friends but now that he had one he'd do whatever it took to protect that bond and keep her safe. She was someone he valued, and an amazing man like himself could protect that bond even if his life depended on it.

Instead of rolling her eyes at Deus’ comment Emiko just smiled and made a small nod, he had proven himself today after all. However, that smile of hers froze and her eyes widened in shock as his very cold hands were placed on her rosy cheeks. “Wah! Cold! You hands are still like ice cubes!” she complained, ignoring with all her might the fact that it felt like her body had been put on fire and that her heart was beating frantically in her chest. Lifting up her own hands she took his in hers and dragged him the last few yards to the tables with drinks and snacks. “Here, take this,” Emiko instructed after pouring up a cup of hot chocolate for him and grabbing a sandwich for herself. "You really are bad at staying warm in cold weather, no wonder you hate it so much."

While the two of them were warming their frozen fingers against the cups the redhead and her partner, well boyfriend actually, were putting another plan in action to guarantee a win. They couldn’t prepared themselves for this competition as much as the previous one since they didn’t know what slope was going to be used, but by ‘tweaking’ a few of the steerable snow sleds that were going to be used they would get an upper hand in the snow race.

~

It was now finally time for the second ring of the Radio Winter Competition and all teams were lined up, each with two sleds to their side; one for every teammate. “Ladies and gentlemen, it is now time for the second competition! I hope you are all ready because this one is going to be a little harder and a lot faster!” The host happily exclaimed loud enough so that everyone could hear him, “The winner of this competition will be the team whose members pass the finish line first. To clarify; both team members must pass the line to get their points. But do not fret! If you don’t win you still have a chance to redeem yourself and boost your team’s score in the last and final ring of this competition; The snowball aaaaaim~!” the man grinned and then took on a more serious tone, “Okay, now, everyone get on your sled and we will get this race started!” he waited a moment until everyone were on their sled. Sitting on her sled, hands on the steering-wheel and ready to go, Emiko smiled challenging at Deus, "See you at the finish line. Slowpoke."

“Remember; No foul play! Okay. At my mark; Ready. Set. GO!” with that the host blew his whistle and the race down the slope had started.

Deus sighed a bit drinking from his cup as he glanced around looking for the two people but finding them already off. It seemed Emiko hadn't noticed them which was probably for the best since she'd just get unduly nervous. Deus would take care of this all on his own. But them having slunk off to do god knows what did make him a bit concerned. Especially considering the natural dangers of this sort of competition...

~~~
Deus settled into his sled glancing towards Emiko with a cocky grin, almost forgetting for a moment that they were partners and the threat of the people around them as he got into the competitive spirit. In the end he wanted to win, that was all there was to it. He like winning and competing and that sort of thing. He enjoyed the spirit of competition and the troubles and travails that came with it...
Either way he settled in, waited for his cue, and released the break, zipping down the hillside rather quickly, a bit relieved to find nothing fell apart right out of the gate. Maybe they had failed? Well either way he was able to hold it together. At this rate they might really win..!
The hill down was actually long, a little longer than a normal ski slope, and at some places even quite steep depending on where you steered yourself. There weren’t any trees in the center, where you were supposed to ride, but now and then a lightly dense cluster of trees would appear in the middle or to the side. If you were skillful enough it would be easy to zigzag in-between them and even gain time. If you weren’t, then it was recommended to go around them instead of most likely crashing into trees.
More or less all of the steerable sleds had been altered but not everyone would be experiencing difficulties. While Emiko’s felt slightly rickety there weren’t any obvious problems and she easily steered passed a snowdrift while a guy beside her went straight into it with a loud POOFTH as he hit the snow. Emi was just behind Deus chasing his tail, he was a little faster than her probably because he was heavier but she wouldn’t let him come to the finish line before her.
Up ahead more or less beside Deus was no other than the redhead from the rival team, who was actually wearing goggles and wasn't having problems with snow flying into her eyes. Looking to her side she grinned wickedly at Deus like she already had a plan to 'get rid' of him and so she tried to push on further. Although, where was her partner? For the moments he wasn't seen anywhere and Emiko was slowly loosing speed, her weight working against her.
At first Emiko didn’t notice it since she was further behind Deus than before, but someone was creeping up behind him and soon he had the saboteurs on each side. Squinting her eyes against the snow she suddenly realized that they were heading straight towards a cluster of trees! What were they trying to do? Force Deus into a crash?
Deus grinned a bit as the saboteurs targeted him. A thin wry smile spreading over his features. So they were after him..? good. He would rather that than they attack Emiko. However he wouldn't let them have their way so easily. He continued forward towards the tree at full speed, using the momentum of the hill to drive him up the bank faster and faster until he could nudge ahead just a bit. He then pulled the wheel all the way left.
The sled's from end locked up, it's tail end swinging around in a wide arc sending a spray of snow towards those using their sleds to corral him in. The small lead he had being the only room he had to maneuver in. As soon as he was turned around he rode gravity down the bank and back towards the tracks, with any luck the two of them would be left driving clear off the course due to there attempts to drive him into the tree, allowing him time to catch up and take a solid lead despite the detour...
Heh.. Idiots should know when they are outclassed! Deus wasn't someone whom would cave to this sort of thing. He'd driven formula cars before! Compared to that these speeds were laughable.
Deus’ maneuver took the saboteurs by surprise since they hadn’t expected him to retaliate. However, with goggles on the snow being sprayed at them didn’t do much save for the instinctual flinch or turn of the head, but it was a very close call as the redhead almost crashed into her partner but managed to steer to the side in the last second. So the two of them zigzagged in-between the trees and came out on the other end, gaining several seconds and racing down towards the finish line.
Emiko had seen the whole thing unfold and she sighed with relief as Deus managed to getaway unharmed. The way things looked now it was obvious that the redhead and her boyfriend would pass the finish line first and Deus would come in a few seconds after. Emi wasn’t that far behind him but had one in front of her and one to the side but she had no idea where the rest were. They had almost vanished one by one. But if she crossed the line quickly she and Deus could get the rest of the points needed to win in the last ring of the competition.
With a cluster of trees and snowdrifts to her side the black-haired girl pressed on forward, choosing the steeper areas to gain speed and get closer to finishing the race. “Oh my God! I can’t stop! The brakes or steering wheel won’t work! Help! HELP!” Emiko turned around with shock written across her face as she heard a girl yell and scream right behind her, and saw how someone in a green jacket was speeding right towards the trees. Without really thinking about it further, or reflecting on that if she had just continued she would have crossed the finish line, Emi instead steered to the side when the girl came flying down and then rammed into the side of the sled with a loud crash-like sound.
What Emiko had wanted was to help the girl stop before she crashed, so the only thing she could think of was pushing the other sled to the side and away from the trees. Although what Emi didn’t know was that the plastic part on the front of her steerable sled had been loosened, and just as the two girls were moving to the side it fell off and the front dug into the snow. With the speed that the two of them were going the sudden loss of the front part made Emiko tip over and she was slung off the sled. She landed on the snow with a groan just as the girl in the green jacket screamed and slammed into her hard with the sled. The air was knocked out of Emiko and the other girl was thrown off as well. The two girls rolled down the hill a few yards before coming to a stop, Emi's long black hair spread around her head like a black shadow while one of the sleds slowly continued down as if nothing had just happened.
Deus crossed the finish and pulled it to a stop. He got out with a sigh and shook out his hair. He turned looking around with a smug smirk as he waited to gloat to Emiko however before he could find her he saw people starting to move over towards the trees. Deus rushed over to one of the ATVS the officials had for use in event of emergency and hit the gas, taring off leaving the officials screaming at the powder of his wake.
Once he was clear past the hill he drove up and found the remains of the sled. He dashed over towards it on foot from there. He sprinted to Emiko. People were already on their way by the sounds of it. He moved to her, hand shaking a bit. He closed his eyes, flashes of years ago flooded his mind. A dreary morning, his father in bed, perfectly still. Too still. Silent. Forever.
He took a breath calming himself. She was alive, he could tell that. His powers told him that. He knelt down checking her for any sort of injuries or blood. People whom had possibly sustained spinal injuries were better if not moved, so he didn't want to disturb her. He already heard medics and rescuers moving in towards them as he leaned in and placed a hand on her cheek with a small smile. A sad smile.
"Come on.. Wake up." He said brushing the hair out of her face before leaning in and pressing his forehead to hers. "Wake up already, moron." He said keeping a steady tone. He couldn't stay calm. He knew she was fine.... But.. he didn't? Dying wasn't the worst thing that could happen to a person. He just wanted a few words to calm him. A few words to quell that tension in the back of his mind.
How many had he seen just like this? A hundred? More? Their final pose. With people just as hurt and scared, begging them to say anything. Even if he knew she wasn't dead that paranoia, that feeling couldn't go away. Not for someone that so intimately knew death and suffering. And from that distance she might even feel the ice cold pricks of tiny specks of water on her cheeks. Tiny little cracks in the damn of his emotions. not enough to show to those around but one could hardly hide anything this close.
The girl in the green jacket was sitting in the snow, wailing over and over again that she was so sorry and that the brakes and steering-wheel suddenly stopped working on the way down the slope. Although her shock made her stammer and sob, making some of her words very incoherent and the people around her was having difficulty understanding her. Thankfully she wasn’t badly hurt, save for a swollen wrist she had landed on after trying to stop the fall and feeling sore she was perfectly fine. “T-the girl… what happened to the g-girl? Did I kill her?!” she asked unhappily with a loud sob referring to Emiko.
Emiko was looking slightly worse; her coat was torn by the shoulder after getting stuck on the sled when it basically drove over her, her left cheek had a small bleeding cut and her chin had a red abrasion after sliding on the compact snow. At first she wasn’t reacting to Deus’ touch and was completely motionless, but when the salty droplets of his tears hit her cheek her eyelids suddenly fluttered.
Very slowly as if in slow-motion Emiko’s eyes opened up. Her eyelids were heavy and she looked like she was sleepy and having trouble keeping them open. So it was like through a thin haze she saw Deus’ face so close to her own and she could even distinguish the separate lashes. But most of all Emiko felt him. She felt his hand on her soft pale cheek, felt his forehead pressed against her own, felt how her heart blossomed at his closeness and swelled in her chest. But most of all she felt her love for him.
“H-hey you,” Emiko finally said in a very soft and gentle whisper that was only audible to Deus due to how close he was. Her violet eyes gazed at him and glistened as a pleased smile tugged at her lips. She was happy to see him but her expression slowly turned into a frown and she asked with the same hushed tone as before, “Hey~ Are you alright?” She then cooed with a hint of worry, “You look sad. Did something happen?” Emiko didn’t have a concussion or something and she hadn’t really forgotten the fact that she had just been in an accident. It was just that she had never seen Deus look like that before and she was a little worried that he wasn’t okay. Emiko was more aware of how close Deus was and how he was feeling compared to all of her own pains and aches.
