The casual sound of wheels turning was not uncommon, but the sight of a large box being brought in was. As the wheels on the cart spun, the large wooden box was brought down the hall to a more private area of the hospital. It was generally used for storage, but the room was prepared for this box. The door was opened and the box brought in.

The man wheeling the box turned and headed out to get a signature for the drop off. Today was a very important day. The examination of a mummified body was going to be done today. A body that was old enough for the skin to stick to the bones as if there weren't any muscles left. As if they had rotted away after all these years. The table had a screen around it that was sealed, so it would be a sterile environment for this body.

Several people were called to examine and one person would be lucky enough to do the autopsy. The people who brought the body to this facility were looking for a simple question. Was there anything special about this body? Hyakuji was better equipped for this kind of question as they were told and so here sat the mummified body, resting on the table as people began to gather.

Meeting, discussions, orders and notes were all given and taken during the examination. The autopsy would be done alone by one person chosen for the task. This was history in the making.

The soft murmur of voices and feet shuffling was temporarily over voiced by the happy shout of a young woman. “Shinku! Shinkuuuu!” She pushed herself forward, pardoning herself as she accidentally stepped and pushed people. “Shinku! Hey!” Takemura Hinata smiled as she finally reached a beautiful woman in her late twenties, with brown eyes and light brown hair. “Ah! Hina-chan!” Himejima Shinku, Hinas older cousin and forensic pathologist at the Hyakuji hospital, exclaimed, “I’m glad you made it! Like I said over the phone, we are taking a closer look on a very interesting specimen today,” the older cousin informed with excitement. While it literally was a very morbid job she enjoyed it and even got a sense of satisfaction being able to bring closure to someone’s death. Shinku’s specialty was those tricky deaths with no apparent reason: the supernatural ones.

As people were slowly moving around and taking their seat behind the Plexiglas that would separate the audience from the workers Shinku smiled at Hinata, “You are lucky, you are getting the best seat of them all; right beside me and the corpse.” While Hina didn’t have much of a strong stomach compared to her older cousin it would still be interesting to be part of this autopsy. Shinku had mentioned that it was a mummified corpse but the cause of death was still a mystery. They had sent it to Hyakuji hoping that she could solve the case, especially considering her special powers. Shinku could see traces of magic and powers on dead bodies, the traces were like fingerprints, each having their own specific pattern and with some work she could identify what kind of supernatural force had caused the death. In that way her powers helped her to determine the cause of deaths.

After a quick conversation with one of the doctors in the audience Shinku led Hinata to an adjacent room where they got ready to perform the autopsy. Wearing scrubs and protective plastic aprons the two women approached the body and Shinku got down to work while Hina assisted her with the tools.

The first thing they would become aware of was how young the person was. It seemed they were only in their teens. The body just awaiting the taletell moment when everything would begin. Shinku would be able to see a very thick weave of magic around the corpse, the layers digging into the very core of the corpse. With how strong and powerful the appearance was, it was clear there was something 'special' about this figure that was before them.

Upon closer look it would be noted that all the blood was drained, as if the body was dried from the inside out. No wounds or otherwise deathly means were found. The body seemed to be a mummified corpse. It was possible they were still alive when this happened, but that would be physically impossible, right?

It had been quite surprising when Shinku was informed that a mummified corpse was coming to the hospital and not being put on display at a museum or given to scientist for research. But now, as she kept on working, seeing the thick and seemingly impenetrable weave of magic and strong power surrounding the corpse she understood that her own ability was probably one of the reasons why the body was on her table.

Taking a sample of the magic enveloping the corpse and putting it to the side Shinku bent over the body taking a closer look. “Hina-chan, could you use your powers and look with your inner eye to see if you can spot a cause of death?” Answering with a nod Hinata closed her eyes after lifting her hands, palms facing the mummified body, and used her inner eye to travel through the body trying to detect a cause of death. Oddly enough Hina opened her eyes again a few moments later without knowing how the young man had died; it was a mystery.

“I c-can’t find anything wrong,” the young nurse stammered and looked at her cousin with a perplexed expression. This was a first for Hinata, usually when someone died there was a reason for it, usually there would be something for her to heal, but she found nothing. Shinku frowned, “Are you sure?” Hina nodded and Shinku continued, “Well, that doesn’t necessarily mean anything; some supernatural deaths don’t leave any traces at all save for the magic that has been used,” she looked down at the corpse before her and mumbled to herself, “That is probably what happened to you, right?”

The duo continued working but a tiny accident would soon change things.

When Shinku walked around the table examining body she accidentally pushed the little chart that held the tools, and as they were about to fall down Hinata instinctually grabbed a few before hitting the ground. At first she didn’t notice it because the scalpel was so sharp, but soon her palm started to sting in a familiar way and she saw blood staining her plastic glove. Wincing she took it off and walked over to the washbasin to get her hand cleaned and disinfected. Although, one lonely blood drop had landed on the corpse when the glove came off…

The singular drop of blood was all that was needed, as if hungrily devouring the blood, it was soon pulled through the thick and dry skin, leaving no evidence. The drop of blood would travel down the remnants of the muscles, gliding over before reaching a dried vein. As if on command, the blood began to stretch, soaking into the vein. On the outside it appeared nothing had happened, but on the inside the blood was revitalizing the vein, forcing the blood to flow once more through the empty artery until it reached to his heart. The leathery sack was beginning to stretch, rebuild, and renourish itself, quickly turning into a fully working heart.

One thump, two thumps. The beats were very slow, but the functioning heart was beginning to produce its own blood once more. Veins, arteries, and lungs were being restored, at which point the muscles began to flesh out, restoring to their original size and shape. On the inside he had full working organs once more, but the outside his skin looked like crumpled paper still. It would take just a moment though, casually looking to the side and then back before the skin began to stretch, hydrates and wrap around the muscles. It almost looked like a starved man, skin and bones for most part.

The body began to fill out, hair regrowing from the skin. One drop it seemed was all he needed to revive. When they would both turn around, there would be not a mummy, but a man, a boy it seemed, lying on that cold slab, the sheet the only thing covering him.

Shinku hurried to Hinata’s side when she noticed that her cousin had stepped to the side. “What is wrong, did something happen?” the older cousin asked as she glanced down at Hina’s hand, noticing the faint tint of red in the water that went down the drain. “Oh! Hina-chan! I’m so sorry! That is my fault! Did you cut yourself picking up the tools and tray?” Shinku exclaimed as Hinata smiled in return, “Ah~ It is fine Shinku, it isn’t deep at all. Let me just put a band aid on and we can get back to work.” Patting her hand dry with a paper towel Hina added with a little solemn tone, “I’m sorry for disrupting your work like this. It won’t happen again.” It had honestly been foolish of her to try catching the tools. If a knife fell you didn’t try catching it, instead you jump to the side. It was an amateur’s mistake and the young nurse was ashamed that she had made it.

Nudging Hinata lightly with her hip the older cousin said reassuringly, “Don’t worry about it Hina-chan. Common, let’s get back to work. Those old men seem to be very impatient for some reason…” After Hinata and Shinku had went to the side to attend the wound the people in the observation room had been yelling and knocking on the Plexiglas, trying to get their attention as the mummified corpse behind them was turning into a normal human body. “Hai~ We are returning to work now!” Shinku called out to them frustrated with their impatience and turned around with Hina, ready to get back to work.

The sight that awaited them made both of the women freeze in mid-step, Hinata dropped her new pair of plastic gloves down on the floor and Shinku’s mouth fell open in a silent O. Both stood there silently for a few seconds until their brains had processed the scene and both gasped, loudly wondering what had happened as they carefully approached the table and the seemingly normal body of a young man. “Shinku, what is going on?” Hina asked with a voice full of shock and amazement. She had never seen anything like this and neither had her cousin. “I have no idea.”

((I guess you can fast-forward or something if you wanna and have him wake up in a hospital room))

The body had finished regeneration and all that was left was the regenerating brain. It had just finished, but now it had to connect the many synapses. The body remained motionless, just sitting there on the cold slab. It was hard to tell if it was alive or still dead despite how livid it appeared. As the brain made connections, the nerves began to fill out, allowing electrical signals to race through the body. The nerve regeneration started at the spine and worked its way over his body.

Soon enough, the chest moved as the lungs began to operate. A result was a sudden violent coughing fit, the body reacting on its own as a hand grips the side and with a movement, began to cough up vomit and dust, purging it's insides before everyone. After a few violent heaves, the person gives out a soft groan and sits up, nude, on the slab. A soft, dry sigh escapes his lips as his eyes slowly open, the membrane regeneration and adding moisture to make the eyes comfortable. His eyes were a very dark steel blue. He turns and looks, taking notice in two nurses.

"Shit.. I'm guessing it happened again.." His voice was rough, as if dry. "What was it this time? Car accident? Falling meteor? Train? Victim of a stabbing? Shot? Mugged? Was I missing my head this time?" He gave off the impression that he had only been out for a couple days, not decades like his body suggested, although he had no idea he had been 'asleep' for 35 years.

As both women were staring at the ‘fresh’ human body on the table the people in the observation room started to make all kinds of calls. To be honest, people rising from the dead had happened before in a town like Hyakuji, but it wasn’t every day you got to see a mummified corpse ‘reverse time’ and look completely normal. There was some serious magic going on.

In the meantime Hinata and Shinku got closer to the body and put on their protective mouth masks just as the chest suddenly rose, like a deep breath was taken. Both women let out small yelps and quickly backed away as the body convulsed in coughs and started to vomit, emptying the stomach of whatever there was in there. Then the body suddenly sat up, making Hinata drop her jaw and Shinku shriek as she grabbed the nearest object to use as a weapon, an empty bowl that usually was used for weighing innards. “Stay where you are, do not move another inch, young man,” Shinku threatened as she positioned herself between her cousin and the now reinvigorated corpse. The fact that he was naked didn’t bother the cousins; both worked in the medical field and were professional enough to not look, but mostly not care.

Shinku had actually had a body come to life on her table before, but that time it had been zombie of sorts. Or rather a necromancers own personal assistant that had been sleeping and then woke up in a morgue. Either way, that time it had been a little violent when wanting to get out and Shinku wasn’t having any of that nonsense again. Hinata on the other hand was having completely the opposite thoughts. She was actually concerned for this young looking man and was slightly perplexed by the first words he spoke. “Shinku, calm down,” Hina mumbled as she furrowed her brows looking at the boy, trying to wrap her mind around what was happening.

“Falling meteor? Hah! You were a mummy, boy! Drained of all blood and not a single indication to how or why,” Shinku replied as she lowered the bowl and instead planted her hands on her hips, glaring at the man while giving an air of that she was in charge and the living mummy answered to her.

"A bowl, really? As if coming back to life wasn't an indicator of how useless that would be." He moves a bit and stands up, but not being used to his legs, he stumbled and fell. A look of confusion crossed his face as he moved his hands to his legs. "What?" He looks to her and sits up a bit. He sighs and moves his hands to his sides.

"Drained of blood, huh? I suppose hanging around vamps would do that to me." He grips his fingers into the floor. "A day of being dead would not do this to me.. Today's Thursday, right?" It was a Monday. He sighs a bit and looks to the ground. "Can I get a sheet or some clothes.. Preferably a shower or bath.. I think I fell in this mess.."

Shinku snorted as the living corpse came with a snarky remark only to collapse as he took one step. However, Hinata rushed forward to help the boy stand up again and sit back on the table as she repeated with surprise, “Vampires did this to you?” Well, that explained why he had been drained of blood but not how he had become a mummy…

While Hina was attending to this living corpse Shinku went to get a pair of scrubs that the boy could borrow until the situation was solved.

“No, it isn’t Thursday today, it’s Monday,” Hinata replied, frowning worriedly as she looked at the young man who seemed to be around the age of seventeen. “What is the last thing you remember? If it is true that vampires drank the very last drop of your blood, that still doesn’t explain how your body looked like a mummified corpse. That takes more than just a few days to happen…” This whole situation was absurd and the fact that Hinata was talking to someone who moments ago had been a dead corpse was almost ridiculous. While it maybe sometimes happened among necromancers it was a rarity in the autopsy room.

Shinku returned with the scrubs and handed them to the boy just as a couple of hospital guards came storming into the room, ordering the two cousins to step away from man and exit the room. Startled by their sudden appearance both Shinku and Hinata nodded and went into the adjacent room while Declan would be escorted to a hospital room where he could shower and get dressed and then answer a couple of questions since an investigation had to be made. They had to know if there was anyone they should contact but also how and why he had been a mummy. Was it attempted murder?

((You can just time skip and have him either still being in the hospital room or exiting the hospital and I’ll have Hina join ^^ ))

After everything that happened, he had been left in the room to stare out the window silently. Here he was, seemingly thirty five years in the future it felt like. People had small devices they watched movies and listened to music from. It was a cultural shock. Had things already progressed this fast? He had been a mummy because he had been buried in a landfill some 34 years ago and was only recently unearthed in an attempt to clear the landfill.

A soft curse came from his lips. How could he have let this happen? He takes some effort to remove himself from the wheelchair, pushing himself out and sits on the bed. He was cleaned and wearing something suitable. A printed t-shirt and jeans. The shirt was a bit big on him, but it would last until he sorted himself an identity in this strange world. The people deemed him less interesting than a vampire or other significant immortal, instead just viewing this as a paradox of time reversal. They'd have to get someone who specializes in time to examine him.

He turns his heavy gaze to the side and sighs, laying down on the bed. That split abyss he felt for 35 years. The quiet slumber. It was the closest thing to a death he had ever come to and some moron must have gotten blood on him to cause him to regenerate. His legs were useless for now. It seemed his brain hadn't finished connecting the various nerves and electrical signals.

A soft knock was heard from the door before the handle was slowly pushed down and Hinata and Shinku entered the room, seeing the former mummy lying on the bed. The two cousins had been in Shinku’s office while waiting for everything to calm down so that they could visit. “Hi, I'm not sure if you remember us but were were the first ones you met when you woke up,” Hinata smiled while Shinku nodded in greeting and the two of them walked up to the bed. “I actually have a meeting in fifteen minutes but I wanted to come by and check on you,” the older cousin informed, “You seem to have drawn a lot of attention, not only to you but me as well,” Shinku smiled then added with a small bow, “I’m Himejima Shinku, nice to meet you.” Hinata then stepped forward and made a small bow as well, “I’m Takemura Hinata, pleased to meet you.”

Placing a hand on her hip Shinku looked curiously at the young man in bed, “I know that you already went through it with the others, but do you mind explaining to me what happened to you? Why are you looking normal now but earlier today you were a rotten corpse?” Hina was also curious to this and sat down on a chair, looking expectantly at Declan. Since she was a healer this was in particular interesting to her.

He uses his hands to push himself up to look at them as they entered. For someone threatening to bash his head in with a bowl, Shinku was now pretty formal. He moves his hand to his head and looks at them. "I'm Declan." He tilts his head a bit to their question. "I faded, presumably from a vampire, and now here I am, thirty five years later." He shrugs a bit. "Not sure what else to say."

“Faded?” Shinku repeated, not sure what he meant with that term. That he had died? That his body ‘faded’ away and became mummified? At the same time Hina had repeated “Thirty-five years!” That meant despite looking like seventeen and younger than her he actually was around fifty?! Why wasn’t he aging? Why was he alive again? What was he? There were so many questions Shinku wanted to get answered but she was running out of time.

“I’m sorry, I have to go to my meeting,” Shinku said with a sigh and headed towards the door after giving Hinatas shoulder a small squeeze, “I’ll see you tomorrow for dinner, right Hina-chan?” Hinata smiled and nodded, “Yes, see you tomorrow at my place. And say hello to Tony from me and baby Kana.” As the older cousin exited the room Hinata looked back at Declan still smiling and asked with a curious tone,“What made you come back to life again, was it something we did? Or were you never dead?”

He watches as Shinku asked her questions before being shadowed by Hina's response to his statement of how long its been. A soft chuckle left his lips before Shinku had to take off. His dark navy gaze looks at Hina as she suddenly blossomed and assaulted him with questions that plagued her mind.

His hands were resting silently in his lap as his head was cocked, thinking about it. "I suppose yes to both." He looks to Hina and notices the bandaged cut on her hand. Blood seems to be my curse. As long as it's near me, I can't die. You might have reintroduced blood to me with that cut. A drop would be enough to wake me." He sighs to himself and leans back a bit. "As for never dying.. I suppose you can say that afterall, it has been a thousand years when I think on it. Heh.. Missing my own millenia old birthday. Amusing." He looks to her.

"I guess the easiest way to say this is I'm Immortal. But I still bleed and everything. I've been beheaded, torched, stabbed, drowned, ran over, trampled, crushed, splattered, maimed, eaten but I won't go into the details on that one, and so much more. It's a bit sad when you think of it."
