Emiko had been postponing it for days now but there was no longer a way for her to avoid it. If she did then it would be a sign of that something was wrong and she didn’t want to be questioned nor prodded, it was best to try and act normal. Yes. Normal, she thought to herself determinedly and added a little stomp in her steps as she headed towards Aquapolis where Deus was doing another one of his odd jobs. But everything wasn’t like normal. No, because Emiko Nakahara was in love. In love with no other than her best friend.

And she was completely mortified by that fact.

Each step that brought her closer to the Aquapolis entrance made it harder and harder for Emiko to breathe. She hadn’t seen Deus in a long time now and it had been that distance between them that had made her see her ‘predicament’ clearly. Okay, it hadn’t been that easy for her to come to terms with it. There had been a lot of howling and wailing involved not to mention a few manic laughters, a mental break down and then finally realization and, after a loooong time, acceptance. Although, Emiko preferred referring that ordeal as her demise, because how could it not be? Things were definitely not going as expected...

And so here she was, the winter break was over; she was back in Hyakuji and about to meet him.

Tightening her grip around the little paper bag Emi was holding, containing Deus’ late Christmas gift, she paid the entrance fee and entered the aquarium. She wasn’t sure where he was, all Atos had said was that he was working at the aquarium, so Emiko figured that she would stroll around and keep a lookout.

Although a part of her kind of wished that she wouldn’t find him…

Deus sighed heavily as he set down two buckets, bowing his head to the man as he delivered them. He had his sleeves rolled up and gloves on, as well as work jeans. This was another manual labor job. Moving around food, and items, to prepare for the new temporary exhibit. It was exhausting but it paid well and with it he'd have another semester of not worrying about expenses...

He took his check from the desk and glanced over it. "Eh..? But.."

"Ah! It's a thank you! You worked on Christmas and New years so we decided to show our appreciation."

"Ah... T.. Thank you." He said bowing his head. "If you ever need anyone again feel free to contract the agency. This was... pleasant?" He said glancing around.

The woman smiled broadly. "Of course! You were a quiet one but you worked hard." She said, going back to her work.

Deus glanced inside pulling out the (considerably larger than he'd expected) check as well as a season pass to the Aquarium. However behind it was a card with a number written on it. He glanced back to the woman whom flashed him a smile. He turned away from her, cracking into a small grin. "Women sure are scary.." He said as he walked away, tossing it in the trash as soon as he was out of sight.

Christmas and New Years. He was actually glad he'd been able to work both nights. That time of year was the hardest for him. The juxtaposition of how happy he'd been as a child and how isolated he know felt became far more crushing on days like that. Thomas had stopped by to visit their mom and all three of them had met up shortly on Christmas day, his mom hadn't been so happy in a long time. Even so you could hardly compare it to the jovial times of his childhood.

In the end even if Thomas was talking to their mom now the atmosphere was still tense and awkward. He wasn't sure if he'd ever really have a Christmas like back then again..

Naturally Chronus and Thanatos always tried to cheer him up, but that only made him better at avoiding them. In the end he'd rather spend that time alone. Complaining over the feeling of being alone, while purposefully avoiding others, he wondered at how marvelously complex and inscrutable he became around this time of year. Even he couldn't help but think he was pathetic.

He stopped in front of the large animal tank and sighed heavily. Lately things seemed to be so busy for him, but the last month felt... slow. Long, slow, and tedious. He was glad she hadn't been around to pester him through it all. He was glad but.... Maybe things wouldn't have piled up so much? Old feelings and thoughts that he'd rather not have. Perhaps if she'd been pestering him they would have been a little easier to bare? Either way it was over now and he was glad for it. The continual frustrations of the holidays gave way to the numbness of acceptance once more.

What a marvelously complex and inscrutable thought.

The slow pace of the various fishes in their tanks made Emiko feel a bit stressed. They way they slowly floated around made it much more obvious that her brain was racked with thoughts about Deus, her unexplainable emotions towards him and the fact that she was going to have to hide it all from both him and everyone else. Because she really couldn’t tell anyone about this, let alone Deus himself. He didn’t see her that way and she wasn’t even sure how she had ended up doing it herself… What happened to that time when she basically had done a long list of the various reasons why the two of them would never become romantically involved and why Deus’ teasing would never have effect. But now things were different and Emiko was afraid that his teasing would have the opposite effect now.

Taking a deep breath Emiko tried to calm herself down and shake away her thoughts. Maybe it won’t be that bad. It is just Deus, we are friends, we are… her thoughts came to an abrupt halt when she suddenly saw his distorted figure through the aquariums main and largest tank. Her heart made a summersault and her breath was caught in her throat. For a moment it was like everything stopped but then started in an alarming speed. Her chest was pounding painfully and her mind was just in jumbles as she struggled to get a grip of herself. A part of Emiko wanted to rush forward while the other wanted to flee. She wasn’t ready for a confrontation yet. She really wasn’t.

Emiko continued standing there for a moment completely still, waiting for her speeding heart to slow down to no avail then attempted to sort out her confused and chaotic mind before slowly making her way around the large tank. Normal. Just act normal, the black-haired girl repeated to herself as Deus finally came in view and she watched how the blue water in the tank reflected back on him and in his eyes. Swallowing hard Emiko plastered on a smile and said loudly in a joking tone that unintentionally sounded breathless ”Picking out tonight’s dinner?”

And just like that the vacation was over. He sighed heavily, a long weary tired sigh. As if he were being quite literally deflated by her sudden appearance. Perhaps that was going a bit far but then he rather liked to push her buttons, so pretending that seeing her triggered immediate deflation would probably get her good. Especially since she seemed eager as ever. Almost overly eager, really.

"You're back." He said flatly as he dug his hands deep into his pockets, slouching forward and glancing to her with the most bored expression a man had ever put on his face. The exact antithesis of what you'd expect to see between two friends that had been apart for a while and were greeting each other. Then again that was exactly what he was going for.

"I guess all good things really do come to an end..." He said with a tint of sadness to his voice. At this point he was trying very hard not to crack into a grin. Rather pleased with his performance so far. In reality he was happy to see her, of course. They were, all things considered and weighed out, friends in the end. Like he'd been thinking before her timely arrival, she was a rather entertaining distraction from the doldrums.

Not that he had to let her know that.

Slowly coming to a halt Emiko blinked confusedly as she stared back at Deus while her smile faltered and then finally died. He wasn’t glad to see her. He wasn’t glad at all. On the contrary, he seemed rather disappointed that she was back and apparently he wouldn’t have minded a longer separation. Perhaps it was because of her current ‘sensitive state’ that made his initial reaction to her hit so hard or maybe it was because she had missed him and had expected to be missed in return, either way Emi felt hurt and sad and was momentarily stumped to silence because of that.

Several scenarios had run through Emiko’s head during the few days she had postponed getting in touch with Deus after her return at the winter break’s end. Everything from the normalcy she had earlier strived for to heartbreaking scenes where he basically busted her and made it clear that he would never feel anything more than just friendship. But the scene that was currently unfolding hadn’t even once crossed her mind.

It had been more than obvious that Deus’ words had hit home and done what they were supposed to but Emiko tried to save face. “Tell me about it," she replied crossing her arms nonchalantly, gazing off to another tank further away trying to act cool and not like she was feeling hurt. "I didn’t want to come back but even I don’t have the power to stop time.”

He eyed her for a moment before cracking into a small grin, while looking away from her. She was so easy to read that it was almost pitiable. Well he might as well let her off the hook this time. If he forced it any farther she might break into tears or something. Man, girls sure were fragile, right?

He placed a hand on her head flashing her a small smile. "Welcome back, Nakahara." He said as he dropped his arm back to his side, turning on his heel and folding his arms over his chest. He sighed loudly as he looked away from her. "I really have to wonder at you.. I get more texts from your mom than you. I don't even think you contacted me all break except for on Christmas and New Years."

"Well.. I prefer that to being constantly barraged. But I seriously don't think you're a girl from this era." He said, thinking about her dress and personality she really was a- "Showa Girl." He said leaning forward and glancing to the tanks. "So let me guess... the two bastards with big mouths told you where I was..? Was it really so important that you came all this way.. It's late, you know."

He paused, glancing at her before looking away with a nonchalant expression. "W-well... Not that there's any danger of something happening to you.." He said flatly.

When she felt his hand drop down on her head Emiko turned towards Deus with eyes slightly widened in surprise before she smiled widely. It wasn’t like that first nervous smile she had to force when she approached him, instead it was big and warm, showing the genuine happiness she felt seeing him again and immediately dropped her act that had failed miserably. But there was a side effect she hadn’t counted on and it was the pink blush that spread over her cheeks at his touch. Thankfully Deus had turned away from her and missed that little display but Emiko turned her head a little to the side as well in case he looked back at her.

Emiko stayed silent as Deus commented on her lack of contact. He didn’t know it but she had several times picked up her phone, dialed his numbed only to shut it close again, and she had several times written him a message only to never send it. Things were just a little more complicated than he was aware of and still it was like normal. Or at least Deus was like normal, already teasing her and calling her a showa girl, while from Emiko’s perspective everything was different. It was like she was a more alert than usual, a little bit more aware of him, of the things he said, of the way he moved and of the things he did.

“Yeah. Always so eager to oblige,” she replied with a smile referring to Chronus and Atos, forcing herself to look away from Deus and towards the large fish tank. It was funny how something once before wouldn’t have bother her at all now suddenly had a much stronger impact and Emiko felt her ego get a small thorn as her friend declared that her showa girl appearance kept her safe from ‘danger’ during nights. She had to remind herself to roll her eyes the way she always did whenever Deus started with his teasing. “Yes of course. I have a natural danger repellent build in.”

“Speaking of my mother…” Emiko said after a short moment of silence and opened up the small paper bag she had with her. Fishing out a small black velvet pouch containing a small amulet she said “Mom wanted me to give you this, I think as a Christmas gift,” Emi stretched it out towards Deus and added with another eye roll and a heavy sigh, “Either way, she said it was an amulet to protect your good looks from other peoples jealousy and you should keep it under the left side of your mattress.” It really seemed like Subaru was one of Deus’ biggest fans. Looking back down at the paper bag and seeing her own gift Emiko suddenly felt embarrassed and hesitant to give it and ended up repositioning her hands holding the bag behind her back.

"Hahahah. A charm?" He said mirthfully. He opened it and examined the mysterious mystical device. "She's amazing. Having a mother like her wouldn't be bad. I bet it always fun." He said before suddenly realizing what he'd said and feeling a pang of guilt. "Ah, well. Not that my own mother is bad or anything.." He said before putting the charm in his wallet for safekeeping.

"Mmmm? So your mom got me something and not you? That's pretty strange as well... I think your father should get worried. I might steal her away at this point." He said with a mirthful grin. Of course he didn't look at Subaru in that way, but the truth was that he found her immensely entertaining. Her strange actions and complete belief in herbal occult remedy was a source of endless amusement for him.

His family of pragmatic business people were shockingly dry in comparison, to the extent that it seemed impossible both families could exist in the same universe much less have any connection. Even the tenuous connection of two teenagers meeting in school. Such strange circumstances led these two worlds to meet. In a life where things were only the smallest bit different Emiko and he would have never even known each other.

"Well I didn't get you anything either. So it's fair, I suppose... In the end my finances are just too tight for things like gifts. And I knew we wouldn't see each other around the holidays anyhow." He said as he changed course, leaning on the railings and staring in at the massive tortoise. "Working here was fun. The school year is about to start up again.. another year. I'm already getting close to graduating. Things sure will get bothersome from here.." He said with a weary tone as he fussed with his hair.

“Hah haha... yeah, seems like it. I guess my mother likes you more than I do.” Emiko laughed nervously as she clutched the paper bag containing the baseball glove she had bought for him behind her back. Now she definitely couldn’t give him his gift. When had she become such a wuss?! Emi really needed to get better on her ‘Everything is normal’ act because the way it was going now was just downhill. But it was hard to do since the realization that she felt more than just friendship towards Deus changed a lot, but also made her understand that she had been feeling it for a while. Emiko always seemed to feel happier around him, like his presence and proximity was directly connected to her mood. And before whenever she got that warm buzz she had dismissed it as the feeling of friendship but now knew it was something more.

Following Deus’ lead as he walked Emiko stopped beside him and looked down at the tortoise exhibit. With her hands behind her back she looked a little funny, kind of like an old man, especially since she was wearing her plain grey winter coat. Glancing to the side and at Deus’ profile Emiko asked in a somewhat low voice “Is that when you are going to work to take over the Solomon group?” she hadn’t thought much about what Deus was going to do once he graduated, he already seemed so busy with the problems his brother and uncle was throwing his way. To be honest, she hadn’t even thought much about what she was supposed to once she graduated.

Well, there was that Anna and Eri issue and the fact that she looked like their mom. But Emiko had decided not to dig deeper into that since she was just fine with how things were at the moment. Right…?

"Nah. I have to go to uni, unfortunately. The conditions of my dad's will are that I graduate university in order to inherit his controlling shares of the Solomon Group. So sadly I am stuck in school until then.." He said with a sigh. It really was frustrating for him. It felt like he was just spinning his wheels and wasting his time. He was already smarter and more capable than most college grads and at the same time he was also eager to take down his uncle for good.

He understood his father only wanted what was best but he was never sure why his dad added in those stipulations to the will for him to inherit. All it did was make things easier for his uncle and harder on him. This was the one instance Deus could think of where his dad had been truly shortsighted.

Either way he'd just bide his time and endure all these stupid hurdles he had to jump through. If nothing else it would make savoring victory all the sweeter once he'd finally accomplished all he needed to and graduated into his role as the head of the family. Then he'd finally have the pleasure of sticking his arrogant brother in the mail room and his uncle on the streets.

University, Emiko thought with slight dread and felt a lump in her throat as she swallowed and moved away from the tortoises and slowly walked towards the next room and exhibit. Deus going away for university would mean that she wouldn’t see him for a while, especially if he decided going back to London to study. The lump in her throat grew bigger and suddenly it felt like a big dark cloud was over her head. Once before when there had been a chance of Deus leaving Hyakuji for London and a ‘more fitting school’ Emiko had fought the idea, feeling selfish and even possessive, wanting him close to her instead of supporting whatever decision he made. And that reaction hadn’t changed much now either except for the fact that she was now aware of why she didn’t want him to leave and why she reacted that way. Not that it made anything easier, on the contrary, it made everything so much more complicated.

Stopping in front of a wall, with several built-in tanks containing different types of fish, Emiko bent down a little to get a better look at each one still with her hands behind her back. It was so anticlimactic when you compared the tempests of emotions whirling inside her and the calm surroundings. She was so aware of him and his closeness and how her heart raced in her chest. Staring at a colorful fish Emiko asked loudly, “How was your winter break? Missed me?” It was silly but she had to ask, even with the risk of hurting her self-esteem. Emi straightened up and glanced at Deus as she added with a small grin “I missed you. Being surrounded by only kind people makes the absence of your snarky remarks that much more evident.”

Emiko continued walking along the wall, stopping by each tank a few seconds to look at the fishes inside. She had to applaud herself for keeping such a calm exterior while she was feeling so nervous and jumpy. The only reason why she was keeping herself busy looking the fish was just to keep a little distance between the two of them. Whenever he came too close she jumped and could feel her cheeks burn and breathing pick up with anticipation. Not like anything could or would happen. Emiko was determined to keep her feelings a secret from Deus, she didn’t want to risk damaging their friendship in case he had a… less favorable reaction.

He eyed her for a moment before closing his eyes and smirking to himself. "How bold, as usual. Always making the first move." He said as he tucked his hands deep into his coat pockets. He glanced to her as she walked away. Moving around like that, unable to stand still. She seemed nervous? Well they hadn't seen each other in a while. Clearly there was a slight hurdle to jump before things returned to their usual flow.

Deus leaned forward off the railing as he headed for the door. He stopped within it's frame with a small sigh. "I suppose.... a bit." He said, not really making any effort to clarify or contextualize that statement for her. If she couldn't understand it then it would be on her own head. He wasn't going to break his back for her bending over backwards like this.

"Come on then, no point in staying here." He said as he cleared the entrance back through the main corridor out into the bitter winds and cold of the night. Snow drifting around them even in the heart of the city. He paused and checked his watch. A short while left for the bus, no time to loose. He glanced back to her, brushing the snow out of his hair.

"You came all the way out, at this time, in this weather, just to see me." He said with lips pressed tight into a thin smirk. "You missed me, oh I know it. There's no hiding anything from me." He said as he turned away, walking ahead. "Try and act cool all you want but I can see right through it. You didn't run to the giant or your room mate. But then who can blame you..? I AM pretty great.." He said with his usual egotism and bravado.

"The lucky thing for you though, and this is something I won't be repeating, is that I have grown somewhat accustomed to the idea of having a 'friend'. Perhaps even fond of the idea."

It was a short and simple answer. Okay, it was quite bleak, but it was enough to spread a warmth within Emiko all the way out to her fingertips and she had to tilt her head down, staring at the floor, to hide the large smile and pink blush that was spreading across her face from Deus. She felt silly but also happy and realized that this was how it was going to be from now on. He would act completely normal and so would she, or at least try, but in her heart she would live for words like that, small signs of caring and kindness that meant more to her than he would ever realize.

As Deus headed towards the exit Emiko hurried after him like an eager puppy, giving way to the happiness and enthusiasm she was feeling. Stopping for a moment to button her coat and put on quite an unflattering black cap she soon lined up beside him, tying her scarf around her neck to shield from the cold wind and snow.

"You missed me, oh I know it. There's no hiding anything from me."

Emiko froze in the middle of her step and whipped her head to the side, staring at Deus almost petrified as he kept on talking, claiming that he could see right through her cool act. He knew?! She hurried after him, opening her mouth wanting to give some sort of explanation to why she felt this way and promise him that it wouldn’t affect their friendship. But the words were stuck in her throat and she couldn’t get a single word out and only a small whimper managed to escape. Maybe that was for the best because as Deus continued speaking Emiko realized with extreme relief that he was just being his cocky bigheaded self, and had in fact no idea about her true feelings.

Giving a nervous laugh Emiko rolled her eyes at his boastfulness and nudged him lightly as they continued walking. Although his next words caught her off-guard and she looked at him first with a mouth hanging open before it turned into a large grin. She grabbed hold of his arm and looked up at him while tugging it a little. “Aa, common Deus! You are making it sound like friendship is just a nuisance and that you are surprised that you actually enjoy it from time to time,” she laughed. “You couldn’t have thought it would be that bad! There are lots of perks having a friend, like having someone with the patience to listen to your snarky and annoying comments,” she joked, “and here is another one,” Emiko hit him on the chest with the paper bag she had been holding on to. “Not a Christmas gift but a friendship gift,” she declared still grinning widely.

Emiko’s heart was beating loudly from her nervousness and their proximity and yet she was happy. Really happy. And it could be seen on her face as she looked up at Deus smiling broadly with flecks of white in her ebony black hair, glistening lavender eyes, rosy cheeks and a red nose tip from the cold. It didn’t matter if he would never know what she felt for him, this was good enough for her; just being close and being his friend. "Hurry up, slowpoke, we are going to miss the buss."

Deus eyed her in surprise before taking the bag from her. He opened it up, pulling out the packaging. He eyed the contents in surprise before putting it back into the back without really looking at her. A glove... The truth is he'd love to be playing and get a gift like this. But now he'd missed tryouts and another season and he'd never really felt farther away from the game in his life.

Still.. despite all that he did love the game. He glanced to her and grinned. "Not bad for someone like you." He said hitting her on the head with the glove before returning it to the bag. "..." He eyed her for a bit before grabbing her hand and dragging her along to the bus stop. "Oh just.. come on!" He said in annoyance, resigning to it.

~~

As soon as they got back to the dorms he went inside before coming back out with a small package that he basically threw at her in a huff. He wouldn't even make eye contact with her because he was embarrassed about it, and lying, and how lame it was. "It's nothing fancy.." He said puffing out his cheeks. "I am broke.. So it's not like I could get anything fancy. Not even like a new glove."

Inside was a small photo album. And inside that were the pictures he'd been taking all along. From the dorms cooking lessons, to the fancy ball, to the shrine visit. He'd been snapping shots to send back to his mom. But here they all were in physical form.

"I was.. debating whether or not I could give you such a humiliating gift.." He said eyeing the thing.

Emiko stared down at their enlaced fingers as Deus dragged her along towards the bus stop. She could feel the warmth radiating from his hand and like a wildfire spread up her arm, blush her cheeks, burn through her body and finally put her heart ablaze. It was like something she had never felt in her life before and the sensation of his touch made her skin tingle and prick with excitement and expectations. It was hard to hide her reaction from Deus but tried her best while thinking that she needed to get better at it. Usually Emiko was the calm and unflappable type, not much could get a loud response from her, but this was the first time she was experiencing an emotional inner storm. So she was in for quite a ride.

Finally back at the dorms Emiko clumsily caught the package Deus threw at her. Staring down at it she didn’t hear much of what he was saying, instead all she heard was the frantic pounding of her heart and rushing blood in her ears. It didn’t matter if it cost a little or a lot, the fact that it was from him and he had thought of her was more precious to her than any money could buy.

Carefully unwrapping the gift Emiko inhaled sharply when the photo album was revealed and the first picture was the first photo ever taken of them together. As she kept on flipping the pages, smiling at every picture, Emi didn’t even notice that the wrapping paper had fallen to the ground. “Deus… No… it is… I- I…” She kept on staring down at the album in her hand, unable to look straight at him. Almost all of their experiences together were here inside and it made her grin widely as each memory came flashing by. “I love…” her mind blanked for a split second, making her forget what she was supposed to say before it hit her, “… it. I love it.” Emi kept her gaze down for another moment before looking up, trying to regain her composure and rearrange her expression so that Deus wouldn’t notice that something had changed and wasn’t what it used to be. Finally looking up she smiled “Arigatou gozaimasu. It is great gift, Deus,” then continued with a sigh, trying to conceal her teasing tone, "But you are so immature for thinking it is humiliating. Will I get to see the day when you grow up?"

Emiko was silent for a moment looking from her friend to the photo album in her hands before speaking once again, chaining the subject. “Are you free this Friday?" Her cheeks blushed in a faint pink as she realized it kind of sounded like she was trying to ask him out. "Um... I mean, it seems like I was lucky enough to be drawn for this competition this Friday with a chance to win a large prize. But... but I kind of need a partner…” she looked at him expectantly before adding “I’ll share the prize with you if we win of course.” If he was hesitant from the beginning maybe a prize would tip him over in her favor.
