"Haaah... Haaah..." Oliver panted as he placed his hands on his knees. His hot breath turned to smoke before his eyes. Small beads of sweat rolled down his face sending chills down their wake. His scarf hung from his neck haphazardly, his hair was blown back, and his clothes were a mess. He'd already gone all the way home. When he saw she was there he got worried. An attempt to call Jameson to get her number ended in failure, the idiot didn't even have his phone on! After that he'd become a bit.. frantic? He'd dashed over to the bus stop and asked if the girl had been seen, then he went back to the mall where they parted, finally he ran over to the park.. Was she really nowhere? He turned around as he looked at the sea of couples out and about.. December 24th.. on a day like that she was all alone and lost. Their date was over and he knew she could take care of herself but... At that time she'd looked so upset, what was she thinking at that time? He should have gone after her properly! Damn, what an idiot! She was an idiot too! Why didn't she go home?! Even Oliver understood what he did was wrong but.. Was it that wrong? Had he offended her or hurt her? Was she ashamed for tossing him? Was she scared her cover was blown... What was she thinking..? Geh! What an annoying brat! Worrying him to this extent, he'd have to give her an earful for that.. But first.. finding her.. Where could she be..? Edited by Cypriss, Jan 4 2012, 11:20 AM.

"You're keeping busy aren't you, Oliver?" a familiar cheerful voice greeted him from behind. But it wasn't the correct one. Instead of the girl he'd been looking for, it was an older woman, several years his senior. Though she'd grown her hair out and kept it in a neat ponytail now, the face was familiar enough to be recognisable. Someone from the time during which Oliver worked for Johnson. A simple white greatcoat, black calf-length boots. The sensible kind. A vermillion scarf wrapped around her neck, accenting hair that framed her face neatly. It was still pleasant enough, and with one of those cheerful smiles of someone like an older relative. "It's been a long time." |

"W...woah, that's not.." He turned eyeing the woman in surprise. "Wow, it is.." He said as he planted a hand on his side flashing a broad smile. "I don't know how or why but it really is you.." He stared at her completely mystified. Marina, one of the people he had worked with under Johnson's command, before he went batshit and defected. Still, how he'd managed to run into her here of all places was beyond him. Was she on assignment or was she a civilian now? Also, DAMN, she was looking good. "Man, are you see... Oh wait." He turned looking around. Right. Chetri. He was sort of busy at the moment.. But this opportunity didn't come up much. Seeing someone from his past that didn't want to kill him or his loved ones was a pretty rare event for him. "Haah, Yeah! It's more like others are keeping ME busy.." He rubbed his neck looking through the crowd. "You know how it goes. Fake date with a crazy person, get judo tossed on your ass and ditched. Same ol' Same ol'." He said casually as he sighed in defeat. Nowhere... |

"I see." she nodded understandingly "So it wasn't just someone who you startled, reflexively tossed you, and got upset over it leading to their running away like it seemed? Because I might have done that in my younger gears." Saying so, she gave a sly, knowing grin, as if she understood the situation in some way. But that couldn't possibly be it right? It was merely coincidence? ...But then, Marina's duties back then had been... ...Tracking people down, and following them discreetly, hadn't it. |

"You...." He eyed her curiously for a moment. The way she said that, it seemed as if she'd seen it.. But then that meant she'd been following him since.. But.. that... Wait.. What? Uh... Right.. "er.. Yeah. It was someone I know from work." He said eyeing her curiously. "She has... boundaries issues and I got a bit.. hug.. ish." He said laughing a bit as he looked away from her with a heavy sigh. "I'f I'd known it were going to be such a big deal I would have been more careful." He said in a rather distant tone. "How about you..?" He said looking to her with a small smile. "You keeping busy? I imagine the agency is a lot different without Johnson around.." His eyes drifted away from her towards the ground, the shot still ringing in his ears a year later. Johnson's last words of his personal failure as a student, Chetri bleeding on the ground. That wasn't something he liked to remember. 'I need to find her..' |

"That's why I'm here actually." she replied seriously "I heard about Johnson, how he went rogue, and how you killed him." The air seemed to tense up for a moment. She knew that he'd been involved in Johnson's death. Such a thing was not without consequences, especially since the man had been fairly important to the agency back in his day, and had made off with a good amount of top secret research. It would not be unusual for field spooks of all sorts to want to take it for themselves, especially given that, while it was known to have been lost near Japan, noone was exactly sure of the exact coordinates. Even if they narrowed down their search, there was alot of Ocean to cover. However, that didn't seem to be tbe case today. Realising the probable misinterpretation, Marina broke it up with a a laugh. "Ah, right. Sorry, it must seem suspicious doesn't it? Don't worry, I'm not here to kill you or anything, but I talked to the others. I wanted to see for myself, exactly how you've grown all these years." |

He stared at her in shock, his chest clenching. That had escaped back to them? Well, he was already aware that was the case. Jameson had allowed survivors against Miyuki's better judgement. As such information leaking out was possible. He looked down and away from her as she continued. "I wouldn't blame you if you were here for that.." He said dryly. "Not that I'd roll over and die for you. But i'd understand if.. no. I expect for some of those people to wish for my demise." Which was why he'd taken a new name. Oliver Z. Winston. But anyone that knew his files well could figure that out. Which narrowed the field to a few individuals. Oliver Glen, Zander Winston. His name was a portmanteau of both names. Why he'd chosen that was simple. There was nowhere on Earth he could run or hide from the select handful of people that knew both his code name and birth name. That small group contained the most elite individuals the U.S. government had ever produced. He was only lucky that Johnson WAS rogue when the fight happened. Most ended up seeing the incident as an inevitability and were more upset with Johnson's betrayal than Oliver's of the now disgraced leader.. "I didn't kill him.." He said after a while. "I... In the end my final act was disgracing him by being unable to do what I needed to. I'm sure that made his death more painful, knowing that not only was I unable to follow him but I wasn't even able to properly live by his standards on my own path. I'm not sure which he would find worse.. A soldier that disobeys orders is worthless, but a soldier that disobeys orders for an ideal he won't even protect is garbage." He glanced to her before planting his hands on his sides. "Man.. I'm not making a very shining portrayal of myself, am I?" 'She came to see how I've grown and I tell her that..? What a shameful way to conduct myself... I feel sorry for her, for having expected anything out of me.' Perhaps he wasn't being fair to himself, something that happened a year ago in his darkest moment wasn't the only measure of his growth. But even so these feelings and thoughts and doubts were all swirling around in his head. The emotions of that day a year ago were suddenly fresh and powerful again. He felt all of it. The betrayal, the anger, the pain, the failure, and the painful realization that his inaction caused the wounds that Chetri then suffered to do the job he should have. None of that really went away. It merely ebbed to the back of his mind. But now here it was, all as fresh as if it were happening then and there. |

She took it calmly. Marina listened to Oliver quietly, and nodded as he continued to tell his tale. "I see..." she observed, before unexpectedly putting her hand to his head, much like how one would pat a dog. "You always were a really good kid." Rather than expressing disappointment, Marina was instead giving him a soft, satisfied smile, like an older sister who approved of a younger brother's actions. "You're trying to put that part of you behind you, that's why you left right?" |

He eyed her in surprise as she placed a hand on his head. He.... he wasn't expecting something like that. It felt.... Good. There was no denying it. The feeling of someone he respected, someone who knew the full extent of it, not blaming him and instead praising him felt so very good that he couldn't explain it. He laughed a bit looking away. "Hey, hey, don't treat me like a kid.." He said with a barely suppressed smile, his tone saying he didn't really mind it all that much. Just like that the storm within quieted a bit. Ebbing back a little, allowing him to refocus. "Marina, you're great. But I really can't stand around right now. This girl I'm looking for.. she's ridiculous. She has like.. zero understanding of anything..." Well that wasn't true. She was perfectly adept at blending into normal society. So perfect that it was kind of creepy. "I've never seen her freak out like that either.... So I'm a bit concerned about what her mental state is... She's hard to read, I've really got no idea what's going through her head." |

"Heh... so that's why you were so worried then." With a sigh, she let go for now "You always did take after Cypriss. But you know, I think you misunderstood him in the end. Johnson considered you both sons you know. I think that's why he took it so hard when you ran away, but tried everything to keep the agency away from you afterward." Still smiling, she pocketed her hands. "So, how'd you end up dating such a ridiculous person?" she asked |

Him? Like Cypriss? How found that hard to believe. If Cypriss had been there he would have found a way to save Johnson, or rather Johnson would have never been lost. Even so that sort of thing struck him in a funny way. He was like Cypriss? That felt.. happy, and somewhat sad. He still missed his old friend, and some nagging voice in his head told him that no only was he not nearly as good as Cypriss he was also nothing like the old friend. "Date..?" He said with a dry laugh. "I don't 'date' her. I don't 'date' anyone.." He said, completely opposed to the idea of being seen as in a relationship, especially with Chetri. "Dating is admitting defeat. It's saying you don't think you can do better and so you'll stick with this one." He said trying to suppress a grin. He knew that sort of thinking was counter to typical ideals of love and finding a soul mate, which is why he said it. "It was a fake date so that she could understand how to date one of my friends. She's never been on one so I was teaching her the ropes. I er.. Well, failed." He said, putting it bluntly. |
