Immediately after the end of Eye of the S/Save the last dance;

She drove in silence.

The minivan hadn't stopped since it left the warehousing district. Looking like just another delivery vehicle for a small business, it was also registered under a false name, and purchased anonymously from a third party.

The point was to get the vehicle away from the city to ensure there wouldn't be any useful trace of their presence.

For the most part, the drive was uneventful. It was early Christmas morning afterall, and most were at home with their families and friends, and even the odd streetracers who usually hung around the mountain road weren't present. Only the serenity of a deserted mountain road at night, and their thoughts kept the company.

For her part, Miyuki didn't see a need to discuss what had just happened. There was no thrill or feeling for such a victory. Like all the other times, this was merely a calculated risk that had produced the desired result. No more, no less.

The fact that a man by the name of Shinkuro Isaka had died as a result was of little consequence, beside the fact that a great threat had been eliminated. And in that, the world had become, if not better for it, then safer and more predictable.

That the means to have done so were considered reproachable by others was irrelevant.

Though the passage of the eve into the Christmas morning had been marked by gunfire and violence, peace would return, and it would eventually be forgotten as another incident in a city where every day was filled with them.

God was in his heaven, all was right with the world.

The fact it wasn't a drive straight home led to Kotoko falling asleep in her seat, resting on the window and just...dozing off due to exhaustion. Not the ideal way to spend the night of Christmas Eve, but this time Kotoko wasn't that upset...it was kind of hard to be when special occasions were rarely celebrated in the household the two shared, to the point that when presented with the idea of working on the holiday, Kotoko was already dressed to do so, since she opted to not even plan anything save a trip by herself to the Azuma home.

Still, when the vehicle came to a halt, Kotoko did eventually wake up, though didn't really say anything. What was there to say really? Her time with Miyuki was reaching a rocky road, to a point where Kotoko was seriously considering no longer travelling it. Either way, the woman remained where she sat, checking the clock and only saying one thing.

"Merry Christmas."

Though there was no real emotion behind it. At most, it was just a greeting out of obligation. The kind one would expect from a store clerk uttering it to customers that wouldn't return it.

"You don't have to greet me out of obligation." she replied evenly, staring blankly outside.

It was a secluded enough spot where they'd stopped and pulled over for now. There wouldn't be anyone around at this time, and anyone approaching could be easily heard from literally miles away.

Though it would have been the perfect time to change the plates and other such things she'd been meaning to do while there, instead, for now, she just sat in relative silence.

"...I can't really wish you a Merry Christmas after that but... is there anywhere you want to go?" she asked

"Nope."

Kotoko wasn't really lying as she ended up resting her head against the window again, shutting her eyes since there wasn't even conversation to be made apparently. "Just tell me when we're back home, need to get ready to see Shoko and gramps later today." the way she said it also made the intent that she was going by herself rather clear. In the end, it seemed Kotoko realized the only way to salvage her own little holiday was to go do things alone...even though that's what she normally did anyway.

"I might as well take you there, unless there's something you want to pick up." she offered.

She sighed.

There was no getting around it really. There was an obvious elephant in the room that needed to be dealt with, and they really wouldn't be going anywhere if they didn't.

"...So, now that you've seen what I'm really like, you find me detestable, don't you?" she asked, not sounding particularly interested.

"I am perfectly capable of getting there myself." Kotoko responded with a sigh, though didn't really bother moving from her spot or even opening her eyes to face the other woman. She was upset, and the fact that Miyuki continued to do the things that were making her upset to begin with weren't really helping matters at all.

"Just do me a little favor and answer me this question before you assume how I feel any more." Kotoko began, opening her eyes and giving Miyuki a rather stern look. "Tell me why do you think I hate you?"

"It's the typical response." she shrugged. "People don't quite believe it until they see it, and then I get a disgusted response for one reason or another."

As if used to it, she doesn't seem to care at all. She simply wants to get this over with. It was obvious Kotoko wanted to ask questions, and that she was upset with how things turned out.

That was why she'd stopped here for now. To get it all out of the way now, instead of later, so it could be resolved without any loose ends.

"I know you've been doing things behind my back anyway, so you don't really have to hold it in."

"You're not getting the luxury of me hitting you this time." Kotoko spat, still not even considering Miyuki the proper time of day. As far as she concerned, she was wasting effort because she could already predict how Miyuki would respond, given how their normal arguments went. While she wanted to rant, she really did, it was kind of pointless when she knew before hand she was wasting her breath.

Didn't stop her from talking a bit to herself though.

"It's really annoying how you do everything in your power to keep people away from you. It's like this past month has been nothing but you making sure you do nothing but the exact opposite of my beliefs to piss me off." there was a hint of curiosity in her tone towards the end. She wanted to know the reasonings but wouldn't bother asking directly.

"I would never take personal bias with me to work." she said blankly. "He was a threat to be dealt with. You were a consideration only inasmuch as you were an excellent distraction who had already caught his attention instead of committing Riotroopers to bring him out into the open. Though, I didn't expect you to fight him so readily."

Miyuki gave her erstwhile partner an aside glance, and resumed looking outside. With such, cold contempt, she dispassionately rendered her assessment and judgement that the feeling of indifference to what had just happened was almost palpable.

The lack of value for individuals had been the corner of the plan, using such a thing as a weakness to be exploited. She wasn't doing it out of cruelty, but simply because it was the most effective plan. If taking his sister as a hostage would make him back down and allow him to be eliminated, then it saved them the trouble of a costly battle to both bystanders and property.

That was why she seemed annoyed by the destruction caused by the fight. Facing an enemy heroically was meaningless if the resulting battle destroys more than it absolutely protects. That was also why she hated battles and merely treated others as tools to her plan.

"If you cannot tolerate such things, then stop daring to claim you'll stand beside me."

"It's hard to tolerate when you don't even bother talking to me about it."

If Kotoko knew beforehand, she would have honestly handled this better. But as usual, Miyuki was too content keeping to herself as always. She always admired Miyuki's intelligence, but the fact she always sprung plans like this upon her and just expected it to be fine afterward was really tiresome. It was like receiving a half-assed apology after being mortally wounded by the other person.

"Then again, fair discussion isn't really your strong point, miss 'I like to torment people who've already given up'." She was trying hard not to leave the truck right now, she wanted to throw up really badly just being near Miyuki right now.

"So what, you going to explain yourself here too or not? I'd love to hear how you justify your actions this time." she yelled

"Mmmm... does it really matter if I do?" she shrugged "It was simply the most effective methodology in consideration for my objectives."

With utmost confidence in her decision, there wasn't even a hint of remorse about anything she'd done. One might as well have asked, for all the concern it'd cause.

"Besides, you're already acting surreptitiously regarding it, so you've obviously made your decision."

"...of course I acted the way I did."

Kotoko couldn't hold it in anymore. "Do you want me to sit there and twiddle my thumbs when someone receives an unjust punishment!?" the other woman raised her voice again. Kotoko rarely got mad, and when she did, she had good reason to. "The sidewalk was already fixed less than an hour later! That's just how Hyakuji is!" an explosion was even something the locals considered a natural occurring phenomenon.

"But apparently that deserves being a slave to someone, with the consequence of painful death for the most absurd of causes!" unlike Louise, and despite only glancing at it, Kotoko had a very broad understanding on every little detail of that contract.

"That's...just not justice at all! In the end, the only person that was hurt was someone who had no reason to be! I cannot stand people being protected through these means!"

Well.

Kotoko did have traits that differed from Kouta's grey attitude.

The sound of an unlocking of a car door filled the air for moment, as she opened the driver side door and stepped out of the vehicle, taking a deep breath.

"...I'm sorry, I needed some air after hearing such a ridiculous thing."

Despite the calm face, the tone was filled with harsh disapproval. It turned away from the vehicle, and stared blankly into the still, empty air.

"The sidewalk was fixed quickly, and that's how the city is, living there an experience constantly fraught with the chance someone might blow you up at any moment, whether someone attacking or those supposedly sworn to protect you. Do you really think such a world, where undisciplined violence by those capable of destroying so much has become the norm, where death to random circumstance because someone threw a temper tantrum that destroys the block you're standing in... do you really think such a state is right?"

"You're just twisting my words around." Kotoko spat as she stepped out of the van. That attitude of hers was just trying the woman's patience as she marched right up to her. "I'm not saying how Hyakuji is is what is right." the woman was at her limits, an anger she had suppressed for so long when dealing with matters like these. Kotoko was a reflection of Kouta's inner most frustrations. In the end, as much as he denied it, maybe he really did want to be the hero that could save everyone. He just gave up trying a long time ago.

"I'm saying that you're wrong! Every life at least deserves a chance, while Isaka wasted his, he could have at least died the way he wanted! His sister didn't need to be brainwashed!" she was pissed. "Louise did nothing wrong! She's lost and confused and you did not handle the situation as well as you possibly could have!" Kotoko was letting it all out. "While I know not everyone can be saved, I want those who are within my reach to be given an equal chance!"

"It's just...not right to claim you're helping people when you're shooting at them the moment they turn their back!"
