"AHHHHHHH!" Louise screamed, scratching her head with both hands in absolute annoyance. "This makes no sense! You're not asking for anything, you're not doing anything, you're just sitting there sipping tea and wasting time lying to me! If you want to be somewhere, go! If you want me to do something, hurry up and say it or get one of these walking shadows to do it for you!"

None of this made sense. Miyuki was completely ignoring her yet asking why they should let her go. She had already told them everything, so in her mind there was nothing left to say. And yet both stayed here in the room, nothing happening, nothing progressing save for an increasing atmosphere of tension and anger. It was absolutely maddenning. Any longer and that chair she'd been sitting in looked like a pretty darn good weapon, armed guards be damned. Hell, they hadn't budged an inch this whole time! She was starting to think they weren't real people and were just there to scare her. It wasn't working anymore.

So she would try one last thing, one final word before going forward with her plan to use the chair as a bludgeoning tool. "Let me out of here. This discussion is over. I want to see Saito."

"Havn't figured it out yet huh?" she asked, putting the cup back on the saucer. "It was purely to figure out how stable you are and what to do with you. The majority of the people in this world live their lives day by day, doing what they can to enjoy their lives with an expectation to keep it, not simply have the results of their efforts destroyed wastefully to some random chance."

In contrast to the seemingly disinterested view she had earlier, her voice sounded more serious, her eyes closing as she clasped her hands on the table.

"As magi, we have power beyond that of normal humans, the power to trample over them if we wish. Many of the people in this city do. It was created to contain such individuals and educate them, that they might become productive citizens who don't needlessly destroy the efforts of others in their own selfish pursuits. Above all, to teach them control."

Her eyes opened, narrowing on Louise

"...Control which you lack. I asked, why should we let you go? Why should we see you as deserving of being free after causing damage? What makes you so special that you saw it within your rights to cause an explosion, and then cause further explosions when things didn't turn out your way? You, with such power as to destroy, but no impulse with which to control that power. Why should your wish be granted, more than anyone else's? When you, without a second thought, decided the best means of expressing yourself was an explosion that could bring innocent bystanders into the fray? If I let you do as you wish, what's stopping you from causing more damage the next time you're displeased? Damage that myself and others will have to deal with."

She raised a hand casually, as if motioning for something. The trooper beside her put his clipboard on the table, and pushed it towards Louise. The page was filled with damage reports and estimates for repairs, as well as initial assessments of the incident, all in English.

"I'm not sure if you can read that or not, but none of what I said has been a lie. I'm now also fairly sure you're too dangerous to be let out on your own, but I'm still giving you the benefit of the doubt. Agent Hiraga has never brought up being bound to a master, nor anything else of what you said, so yes, he will be questioned to confirm this. But this doesn't help your case in the immediate sense. Do you understand now, Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière?"

Geh. She could read the report, of course. It was in a language of one of Tristain's neighbors, one that was required learning at the academy. The report was filled with the costs of repairing the sidewalk and part of the road that had been part of the explosion as well as the witness accounts and written estimates of the scale of damage. All facts, though the numbers were still impossible for her to comprehend. Without a firm grasp of the monetary system there was no way to interpret their meanings.

"I... understand it, but my statement stands. It actually seems like it would be satisfactory for both of us to bring Saito here. I want to see him, you need to talk to him. Can't we both get what we want?"

"You don't fully realise it yet it seems." she frowned slightly "If you, who selfishly chose to put your wish over that of others, have such a desire to see him, why should I not myself trample upon that desire by simply going myself? So, Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière, is there any reason for me to allow both of us our wishes instead of merely trampling over yours because I felt bothered by the situation?"

Reasons, reasons, reasons! What was wrong with this woman!? She just sat there stoically, refusing to let anything proceed--for better or worse--until she had a reason to let Louise go. Even though Louise herself had told Miyuki to just get it over with and lock her away, Miyuki had refused and instead continued to prod for a 'reason to let her go'. When Louise was unable to provide one, she merely continued to ask.

For Louise, that was what most frustrated her. When Louise was this frustrated, she often says things she regrets later. For instance, telling people that she has 'confidence in the Summon Servant spell and will summon the most elegant servant ever'. Or, in another instance, relating aspects of her inner emotions that otherwise are kept under lock, key, wand and riding crop. Miyuki wanted a 'reason'? Louise had one. Not one to let her go, not one to prove that she wouldn't blow up the city, not even one that would keep her from trying to smear Miyuki's face against a wall.

Just a reason to bring Saito here.

"B-Because I love him!" she blurted out, embarrassed but not as much as she would be were Saito actually in the room. Since she was only with Miyuki--and those Shadow people--it was only a mild embarrassment. On the other hand, it was enough that the prospect of leveraging the chair as a weapon was still a valid option...

"I'm sure she'll be glad to know that." she said impassively "Then, following your own methods, I choose to deny it on the ground it bothers me. Do you see it now then? This is the equivalent of your explosion. You're getting a taste of what it's like on the receiving end."

"FINE! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!" Louise screamed, grabbing the back of the chair and lifting it. Or... she tried to lift it, anyway. Sheer anger got the legs of the chair up above Louise's knees, but then her lack of upper-body strength began to fail her. She had really wanted to throw it at that reflective glass along the wall but now that wasn't really possible. It was higher along the wall than she could get the chair up. With no other option she tried to turn and swing the chair against the guard next to her...

...only to have the smooth metal of the chair slip out of her hands, dropping the chair right onto her right foot. As the chair bounced off of her toes and clanged against the floor she let out a yelp and fell over, clutching her throbbing extemity with tears welling up at the sides of her eyes. This... is torture... I'm going to go crazy if I stay here any longer! Saito... you stupid dog, why aren't you here!? Aren't you supposed to save me when I'm in trouble!?

"Are you done playing around yet, Miss Vallière?" Miyuki asked, emptying the last dregs of tea from the pot onto her cup.

"Ah... sir, shouldn't we get her medical assistance?" asked the trooper who was still standing stoically near Louise.

Apparently. the fact Louise would fail was telegraphed enough that noone had bothered to move or react.

"No, that won't be necessary. Her foot should heal up on its own eventually."

Going back into her less caring posture, she sighed for a moment, and took another sip of her tea.

"Tell you what. Suppose I decided it was too much hassle to keep you in a holding facility given all the paperwork I'd have to do, and offered you an alternative punishment, would you prefer it to being sentenced to hard labour mixed with solitary confinement?"

"Yes, whatever it is yes, as long as it gets me out of this room," Louise mumbled from the floor, still nursing her sore foot and unwilling to get out of the side-laying fetal position enough to form a proper response. She had no idea what Miyuki's 'alternative punishment' was nor did Miyuki bother to explain. It merely sounded as if being locked away was too much hassle, which implied that whatever punishment it was, it would be outside.

Outside, as in out of this room, as in finally free of this maddening situation. Anything was better than talking to Miyuki. Anything! She was sure of it!

"From the moment a magus is born,we are those with power. Someday, we may achieve a greater power. Thus, a sense of responsibility should already through your blood before you even learn to speak. That is what it means to be born into the world as a magus." she said, again setting down her now empty cup. "But you obviously lack that sense of responsibility, and thus, you are a hazard to this world. And so you must learn what it is like to live under one such as yourself."

She took what seemed like a scroll out of her coat. Made of vellum, inscribed upon it was an array of patterns and figures in some arcane language, and casually tossed it to Louise after opening it.

The sheepskin would land next to Louise, exposing a wall of text and figures carefully written upon the scroll.

Although others would see them as meaningless scribbles, Louise would recognise it as a form of runic. It was a magecraft document, properly made with great care.

Quote:

Binding magecraft: Target - Signant

We, the magecraft crest of the Takamachi family hereby command: Provided that the following conditions are met, this oath shall become a commandment and bind the target without exception.

Oath:

To the signatory of this contract, whomever it may be: do hereby submit free will and right of mastership, and do henceforce act as familiar to the author of the contract, and any parties that the author specifically extends right of mastership to. Further, all intentions and actions to kill and harm the master shall be forbidden for all eternity. The contract shall exist in perpetuity, until such a time that the original author releases the signatory. On pain of death, the circuits of the signatory shall destroy one's own body to the utmost should the contract be violated by the signatory.

Conditions:

Signing on the scroll with a seal of blood, thus binding the soul to the contract.

Additional Masters: Otoha Kagura, Hotaru Kagura

A Self-Geis Scroll. One of the most merciless contract magecrafts that would only be used in the treacherous society of magi when a contract that absolutely cannot be disobeyed was to be made.

It is an enforced curse that forcibly uses the functions of one’s own Magic Crests upon oneself. Theoretically, it has a power that cannot be erased by any method. Even if the caster lost his life, the Magic Crests would bind the soul of the dead man.

It is a very dangerous magecraft. For magi, a parley that involves offering such a declaration would in fact mean a maximal concession.

"Your move."

Now, were this a year ago she wouldn't have been able to make out what this scroll was saying. Runic was not a language that was required by the academy, it was one that was taught as an extra-curricular. While the best mages often learned it specifically to enhance their magecraft Louise put it off as long as she possibly could. After all, enhance what magecraft, exactly?

After learning of her Void magic, though, it was decided that a crash-course in Runic was necessary. Under the direction of the royal palace she was taught the basics of runic so that she might recognize the basic characters and patterns. Not so much to be able to write it, but to be able to read, understand and dispel. It allowed the palace to form runic seals that she would be able to use as enhancements to her magic class. In a time of war, such a thing was deemed of utmost importance.

So while she couldn't glance at it and immediately understand the whole thing, she could make out the gist. The names were a blur but the rest of the contract seemed straightforward enough. It was a runic-formed Contract Servant spell. Similar to the Summon Familiar spell that had brought Saito to her, except written by an individual with the express purpose of binding an already-present entity rather than actually summoning it.

Louise was, predictably, not enthusiastic about the thought of being someone else's familiar. "So, basically, I'm the familiar of the people listed here? Who are they, you and these guards? Either way, I want another alternative. This is too dangerous! Was there something about the contractee's body exploding in there!?"

"That is the alternative." she reminded Louise, with as much cold contempt as to sprinkle snow on the floor. "Sign it, and you may leave. The masters should be of little concern except as far as you will be provided for, within reason."

Without seemingly any remaining concern, she simply dabbed off her lips with a napkin, apparently paying no attention to the boy lady who had managed to injure her own foot.

"And I assure you, the contract does not in any way state that the contracted party will explode."

It wasn't a lie, easily confirmable with any sort of charm of lie detection. The punishment of the self-geis wasn't to explode one's own body with your magic crest. It instead turned one into a magical ground that shortcircuited the entire system, causing them to go rampant and liquify/burn internal organs, but certainly not explode.

Not that she would take the time to explain to that to Louise.

Louise sat up and held the scroll aloft, squinting again at the Runic symbols. She says there's no 'explode' here but I swear there's a clause about 'body destruction' in it. Tch. So this is it? She looked up at Miyuki, then back to the scroll. Solitary confinement begun with staying here with Miyuki, or sign this... this disgrace. It was magic of a different nature than her own, but it was still binding.

Sit here... or sign the contract and leave.

"Miyuki. I am not of this world. I intend to bring Saito back with me. If I go along with this... ridiculousness, I want word that it can be undone." She read the clause about 'author release' but as she couldn't read the names there was no telling who the author actually was. What if she signed this and it turned out that the author was long dead? Wouldn't that bind her for eternity with no recourse?

On the other hand, her comment suggested that she would be able to do something about returning to her homeworld with Saito from solitary confinement. It wouldn't be unheard of, but with someone like Miyuki Takamachi guarding the incarceration facility the likelihood of an inter-dimensional rescue attempt succeeding were much lower than usual.

I'll go along with your game, Miyuki... as long as I'm here, that is! I'm going home...as soon as I can find a way!

"I wrote the contract."

Was all she said about it. There was nothing else that needed to be said in that regard.

It was also part insurance in that regard, making sure Louise would behave around her, in addition to the contract stipulations.

"Should your behaviour prove you've reformed, I'll let you go. Else, you're not going anywhere, especially not with my subordinate. Fair enough?"

Well, that was simple enough. She was sour about being contracted to the very woman she was trying desperately to avoid, but the promise of being released from this room with relative freedom was too enticing. As long as she could be removed from the bond later and it held no actual written commands to follow, why not? It was almost childish, in fact.

"I can't believe I'm doing this, but..." she muttered, bringing her right thumb to her mouth and taking a deep breath before biting down on a fold of skin. While mildly painful it was the easiest way at hand to draw blood, blood she'd need to sign this damn thing. With a droplet of her life force forming at the end of her thumb she pressed it to the bottom of the scroll and threw the parchment back up. "There."

Uneasily she stood, avoiding putting weight on the foot that had been subjected to the chair impact earlier. "I'm leaving. Let me out."
