The holidays were a perfect time for a fake date. Jameson was gone along with most of the others. It was actually pretty lonely and dull around the office. So the two of them sneaking away to have a fake date so that Chetri could learn about romance and stuff was perfect! This would be invaluable knowledge for her and it would prevent his friend from getting hurt. Truly, Oliver was a kind soul indeed to do such a thing..

Especially since Chetri was so annoying to him, the idea of going on a date with her was completely against his nature! He showed up exactly on time to the agreed upon location, after all it didn't have the atmosphere of a date if they came there together. So he'd arranged for them to prepare and come at different times. Oliver had even stayed the night at his rarely-used dormitory.

He was wearing black slacks and a black suit jacket over a loose fitting long-sleeves t-shirt. He had a muffler on as well to help combat the cold a bit. The snow around them set a good mood too, over all he had to give himself 100 points for picking the park near the mall to meet in. Scenic and nice but also practical. But this was a test for her, not him. He was curious what she'd wear... Probably a suit or something with 0 sex appeal, right?

Hah..... He really was mentally prepared for this, right? Someone like her could be taught, right?

...right?

"I was under the impression this country's culture valued arriving early." Chetri's voice said from behind him.

While he'd arrived at the designated time, she'd been here an hour earlier, dressed in... something not at all what was normally expected.

"I cannot say your look of dread and uncertainty about this meeting is reassuring me as to the hopes you have for my training either."

A cabby hat, a brown skirt and shoes, and a pink sweater with a red undershirt. There was a satchel on her side that she seemed to be passing off as a purse, and more than likely had some form of concealed weapon in there. It was... a fairly unexpected result.

Moreover, where did she even get these clothes?

His eyes widened in shock as he nearly fell down after getting a good look at her as she spoke to him. He was practically choking on his own words he had to eat them so fast. That was.. that was simply too much so much so that...

"Chetri..?" .. he wasn't even sure it was the right person.

He swallowed down his shock and adjusted mentally, glancing away from her and fussing with his hair a bit as he tried to let the color drain from his cheeks and his shock settle. 'Calm down, you're the teacher here! Play it cool!' He mentally commanded himself. He didn't want to let her get the upper hand, especially not when he had a chance to be in a superior position for once. He turned to her, eyeing her for a moment before flashing her a grin. "You pass, good job.." He said as he tucked a hand into his pockets placing the other on his chin, getting a good look, a rather lingering one at that. What an.. unexpected result.

"You look cute. I'm glad. I was worried you'd show up in military gear or something like that.." He said placing a hand on his side with a broad grin. "Besides, I'm not FROM this culture. In case you forgot I'm from America. We value being fashionably late. I jsut came on time because I knew you'd show up early."

"I see." she said, examining his language and manner of speaking more closely. Her expression softened somewhat from before. For a moment it almost seemed like she believed him. For a moment. "You're a terrible liar."

The mild annoyance quickly disappeared however, changing back to her calmer, more common expression, though twinged with a mild hint of concern.

"You don't really believe I'll be able to pull through this, do you?" she asked, calmly and almost mechanically.

Oliver eyed her with a grin as she called his bluff. Dammit! He'd have to try a bit harder to get her to go along with him at this rate. He was the one in control here, right? If he let her set the pace he'd just wind up accomplishing nothing. However when she commented on his optimism, or rather the lack of it, he couldn't help but feel.. relieved?

As confusing as it may have been for her, the fact she even had doubts was a relief to him. The fact she was concerned, the fact that failure meant something to her, was proof to him that this could work. Now all he needed to do was inspire some confidence in her. "If I didn't think you could do it I wouldn't waste my time. Despite what Jameson or other's may think it's valuable stuff to me. I don't do things I don't think have value and I don't take on projects doomed for failure." He reached out and placed a hand on her head with a small smile towards her.

"However... I will dock you points! Didn't you notice? I complimented your outfit when you showed up! Not even a word of thanks or a compliment in return! Remember, a date is about mutual attraction and checking compatibility. Your outfit is good! Anyone looking at you would think you're attractive. But you have to return the favor, saying something good is a way to establish the right atmosphere.." He paused and stroked his chin curiously as he looked around, wondering what to do first..

"I see." she nodded her head again as if in understanding "Then, you were.... on time."

...Was all she could think of, saying so with all seriousness.

Complimenting someone earnestly as herself rather than as a pre-programmed speech pattern was something that she didn't understand. As far as qualities went, he was on time.

Other qualities were seen as expected rather than a 'quality', but the ability of a subject to arrive at a designated meeting point as agreed upon was valued in the world she lived in, where missed connections could make or break deals, and get people killed.

He stared at her for a moment before sighing heavily and laughing to himself, though he wasn't sure if it was the laugh of a desperate man or what. "Bahaha! That compliment carries less weight since you already got onto me for not being early." Man, even at compliments she was so bad! It was actually kind of adorable. No! It was extremely infuriating! Her clueless nature wasn't something to admire, it was a pain in the ass.

He turned his focus away from her and towards the shopping center, placing his hands deep into his pockets. "Alright, we should start off with something like the movies, or food.. or we could walk around a bit.." He turned to her. "Guys have different philosophies about women and paying. Usually if a guy is trying to be a gentleman or get into a girl's pants he'll pay for everything. But some girls like to assert their independence and go dutch. I dunno, for me it varies. The hotter a girl is the more likely I am to pay for things."

He was, at the least, extremely candid. "It's fine to let a guy pay for things, but generally avoid gifts on a first date. A guy with flowers for a first date is trying too hard and expensive gifts on a first date are usually a guy's way of making a girl feel obligated for sex. It's a sleazy tactic to guilt a girl. Shouldn't have to worry about that with Seth since he's broke and a nice guy. Inversely, don't take his offer to pay for granted and ask for expensive things or a high end restaurant. This is the sort of... 'social contract' of dating."

Of course this said more of Oliver than dating in general. Sex and money were obviously two of his major concerns when he approached women and so to him these sorts of things were top priority. If Jameson had been teaching her it would have been all about love and feelings, but Oliver broke it down in a way that was, perhaps, more 'real'. Even if it was less romantic or charming.

"Quinn used to let me pay for everything, but she was cute so I was a sucker for it. These days I tend to go dutch more often than not. But, since I invited you out here for training I'll take care of today's tab." Mentioning an ex was a big no no for a date, one of his personal rules. However, this wasn't really a date, was it? This was just him teaching her. So it didn't matter if he broke the rules. "So, food or walk around? Your call."

She nodded simply, and seemed to be paying careful attention to his words, the way a squirrel might nimble on a nut. Diligently, carefully, and with sharpness.

"I see, then if it is my decision, I believe walking around to ascertain the locale would be a more prudent first choice."

Put simply, she wanted to assess possible routes of ambush, fire, and escape for the main areas in case of attack. If the area was not known to them, then reconnaissance was of the utmost importance.

"Heh. your motives are so obvious. You're clearly trying to gather intel on our location." Oliver said tucking his hands deep into his pockets before sighing heavily. "Still, it's not like you're being paranoid. You have reason for pause, and walking around the perimeter is technically a date activity so that's fine." He said before glancing around and staring them off around the edge, figuring they'd end up on the other end of the main hub which is where they could get something to eat.

"It's strange to think you've never been on a date before.. When I joined the agency I was well received by the women there, many of them a few years older. I guess I was somewhat of a natural? Either way I've always enjoyed the more simple pleasures in life. Like a hot woman on a cold night." He said flashing a grin. He glanced to her before tucking his hands deeper into his pockets and looking away again.

"W-Well.. But.. That being said." He said looking away. "There's basically two ways to approach it.. Either looking for a relationship or just for uh. Er.. Physical compatibility." He said not sure exactly how far he wanted to go in explaining that. "IT's a perfectly legitimate form of dating!" He said as if on defense already.

"I don't think of it as strange. These 'dates' would have been counterproductive." She said calmly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world, while she continued her look around "We were treated well I believe, but we were also not taught anything that would detract from our purpose. As weapons, we were made to be efficient to the company's bottom line."

It was a little cold in her outfit, but the chilly air kept her alert. With the noise and crowds, it was safe enough to speak frankly, considering the risk of eavesdropping was fairly low, and she hadn't seen any trailers as they made their way around.

"Ah..." she turned to face him and gave a slightly nervous laugh, coming off as something abit like a broken doll "Saying that isn't really something condusive to atmosphere is it? Ahaha, just disregard it."

He eyed her for a moment before looking towards the stores as he walked at her own pace. .He really wasn't sure how to reply to things like that. It was at times like these he envied the way Jameson could recklessly broach even painful subjects with reckless abandon. Rather than standing in front of them like they were some sort of impassible wall Jameson could thrust himself into the exchange and get to the heart of things.

Oliver definitely lacked that ability. As such he turned from her and kept looking to the side. However when she suddenly spoke up about the atmosphere with the forced laugh he paused trailing behind her for a bit before he jogged to catch up, placing his hands behind his head.

"A date is to help you get to know each other.. Things like that are part of who you are. And if they wan't to know the real you.. not some cover identity or false persona. Then they will be glad to hear even things like that. Mood and atmosphere are important.. but the most important thing is to be genuine. This is your one chance to do the thing none of your training prepared you for, showing someone the real Chetri that exists beyond the personas and pseudonyms." He said idly, not really looking to her. Or more precisely purposely avoiding looking at her. He wasn't sure why but the precious few moments she opened up to him seemed significant. He didn't want her to close that off. Perhaps it was the fact they worked together..?

"B-besides! Th-this isn't a date! We don't need to follow the rules so closely here!"

"But.... even as a simulation, it's important to maintain the realism to properly train me, is it not?" she asked, curiously tilting her head to the side.

Afterall, the point of training exercise was familiarisation with the real thing. It wouldn't help if training was far too removed from how things really were.

"Cheh.. I'd expect a statement like that from a robot like you.." He said with a sigh. Of course it was asking too much of her to understand that he was trying to be nice by saying what he did, that he wanted to hear more about her in a context unrelated to the fake date. Even so he should have known better than to get his hopes up that she might understand that. Instead she was just worried about following orders. Once again she never failed to fail him.

He sighed heavily, realizing that would only be confusing to her without teaching her much at all. In the end he was her instructor so rather than getting mad he should help her along. . "Listen.. a date is like a field assignment. You adapt to it, change your plans on the fly, all while working towards the single end of understanding the person better and seeing if you... like them in a romantic way. So don't approach it as a series of iron clad rules.."

He sincerely wondered if she was even capable of doing something like that. He really doubted it.

"I see." she nodded "But... how would I determine romantic compatibility?"

It was an earnest question.

Though she'd read about it, and seen stories, it still wasn't something that she thought of as something she comprehended. There was a loose grasp of it, but it was like a house of cards, made from disjointed bits and pieces with no firm foundation.

"Well there's physical attraction. But that's pretty basic.. I think personally physical attraction is very important but most people think it's more about emotional and mental connections and the physical is secondary... Well that's what they say but the truth is they agree with me." He motioned to her and himself. "Why do we wear nicer clothes, clothes that make us look good? It's for the sake of arousing desire in others.."

He paused for a bit. Right, maybe he'd said quite enough on that matter. "A-anyhow. From there the second key is that the person... suits you. That's different for everyone. I like a girl that is bold and unabashed... But for Seth he'd probably rather have a girl whom is cute and quirky. Someone with an interesting personality. For Jameson he'd need someone honest and supportive. The qualities we desire in others are often just things we need as people. Jameson needs someone supportive because sometimes he gets tired and worries about whether or not he can go on.."

"I prefer bolder women because I like to have... I uh.. I like to not have to worry about social norms! I find the whole song and dance tiresome. Generally you figure this stuff out through trial and error. Dating people increases your knowledge of what you do and don't like. And often you'll only figure this stuff out after you're already in love.." He wasn't about to try and explain how even though he liked bolder girls his only legitimate relationship had been with someone too shy to even hold hands.

That.. sort of mystified him beyond explanation already, so explaining it to her would be a nightmare.

"Eventually you'll miss someone when they aren't around.. you'll think of them more than others.. you'll rely on them and go to them for advice when you're down.. and you'll become more strongly aware of their presence. These are the signs of an increasing bond. While physical attraction and compatibility is the first step, these are the things you look for to tell you you're romantically interested in them."

Lately he hadn't even had time to think about anyone but Chetri as far as women went, since she was always annoying him or in his hair. Even when she wasn't around he got annoyed by the things she'd done before. When she was on the trip he'd even been worried about her causing trouble for Jameson! How was he supposed to find a girl with her around distracting him all the time? Feh, what a pain.
