Light Meets Dark; Asher / Mira

Oh, the life of the new guy. Asher wasn't one of those "shy types" that had a hard time meeting people, not by far -- but he still did feel slightly overwhelmed by his new environment. A lot was riding on his ability to learn and grow here, if he was going to take the entrance exam for his Order's academy when he returned home.

He had met a few people, thus far at least, an interesting lot of characters. As he silently recited the hours from his prayer book, he caught sight of one of those, from his homeroom -- Mira, with whom he'd only gotten to talk a bit briefly in their first meeting.

"Hello over there!" he called out to her, still being a bit of a distance away. He waved with his free hand, the other still holding the prayer book, and smiled a greeting.

Mira walked over, though she quickly noticed Asher's prayer book. It's not like she would be repelled or burned by it by divine force or something. She might be a demon... it's just that she's not infernal. But still, the type who'd carry around a holy book might be trouble, and might try to 'smite the forces of evil' if he figured out the truth, not to mention they'd be the most likely candidates to find out her secret. Plus, he might be able to truly kill her, if he knows how to properly banish her.

Still, she'd be friendly. It's not like she was certain he'd find out. Plus if she was particularly avoided those with anything remotely holy... that might be suspicious.

"Oh, hey Asher." she greeted him. At this point, she was just hoping he was devout. That was the most likely explanation right? I mean, heroes without holy magic can be devout in their beliefs right? Millions upon millions of normal people were, whether they were clergy or not, right?

Mira might have been nervous around the young Paladin, but seeking out the "forces of darkness" wasn't even particularly high on the young man's agenda. Not that he wouldn't do it, but it wasn't his main reason for being at the school. Still, the young man was thoroughly oblivious, at least for now, to anything of her true nature.

He snapped the prayer book closed with a small gesture of his hand, walking closer as Mira returned his greeting. He dropped the prayer book into his bag, his hand then sliding into his front pocket as he came closer.

"It's good to bump into a familiar face," he said earnestly, "There aren't too many of those right now. You said your name was.. Mira, right? I hope I remembered that properly.."

"Right, I haven't exactly been here long either. I've met a few people, but still." Mira nodded.

She understood that for every person she came in contact with, her chance of being caught increased. But she wanted to live a 'normal' life, so to speak. And she couldn't afford to avoid everyone but a select few if she did.

"So, is your father a preacher or something? You come across as pretty pious." she asks. It was partially to gather information, although it was a topic of interest too. Don't think for a second that she didn't know scriptures, after all, it's hard to not know all about a major event your relative played a part in... even if he was a villain. Heck, there was a little chapter than she, herself majorly delayed, called 'Revelations'.

Asher's smile grew just a little as she asked about his father, and he shook his head slowly.

"A preacher?" he echoed, "Well, not exactly. My father is a high-ranking Knight in the Order of the Grand Cross, which I'm a fledgling member of. I suppose he does 'preach' from time to time, but he's a warrior more than a preacher."

As he spoke, he reached up to run his fingertips across the ornate cross pendant hanging from his neck, thinking back to his home for just a moment.

"But pious? I certainly try to be... Once I graduate here, I hope to go back home and become a fully-ranked Paladin in my Order."

"Oh just flippin' fantastic. Now all I need is for him to reveal his order's philosophy is 'smite first, ask questions later'." she thought, though her facial expression didn't betray her thoughts.

"It's nice that you get along with your dad. At least it sounds that way." she told him "Me and my Dad... not so much. Trust me, you two wouldn't get along."

She'd give him information, all the information he wanted, as long as it was vague enough to hide the truth.

"Get along?" he echoed, "Yes, we certainly do.. My father is one of the most respected Knights of our Order. If I had my way, I'd be just like him at some point!"

Feeling almost a little too enthusiastic, Asher composed himself. It probably wasn't proper to get so excited in a conversation with someone he'd only met just recently. Especially if, as she said, her and her father didn't get along all that well.

"You and your father aren't on good terms?" he asked, "If it's not prying... Might I ask what happened with you two?"

"My father has some moral issues, to say the least... Look, I'm have my own flaws, but he makes me look like a saint in comparison." she stated "Unlike him, and most my family, I developed half a conscience at some point... I had to to make some tough choices... I chose what was the right thing to do, but I don't think I'd be welcome back home, not that I'd ever want to go back anyways. I-I'd rather not go any further on that."

She certainly didn't want to talk about who her father was, or what choices she had to make.

Conscience... Choices... The way this girl was explaining things was beginning to make her family seem pretty shady to Asher. Of course, he was curious, but he knew better than to pry -- that was a touchy enough subject with a good friend, let alone a brand new acquaintance. So he resolved to drop the subject and move on.

"Well," he said matter-of-factly, "We all have our issues in our background, I guess.. But how did you end up out here? This doesn't seem like the kind of place someone just decides to attend without some kind of motivation..."

Mira had no major problems with letting people know her family had shortcomings. They did, and it's not like she had to reveal exactly how bad they were. She'd be as open as possible, so long as the details kept certain details about her past and her family from being filled in.

"Well, I told you, I'd probably not be welcome to go back home, if I wanted to go home." she mentioned "And it's not like you can pick and choose between schools for people with super powers. This place kinda fills that niche."

Well, not everyone could have a stellar family relationship, Asher guessed. He felt kind of bad for her, honestly -- thinking about the admiration he had for his father and the close relationship they shared, it saddened him a little to meet someone who didn't seem to have anywhere near that in her family.

Blessed in abundance is the man who reveres his father for all his days.

The verse from the Book of Certitudes echoed in his head as he continued to speak.

"That's true," he answered, "People like us can't just walk into any old school, can we? I'm hoping that once I've finished my studies here, I'll be able to return to complete my training with our Order. They operate a specialized training school for Paladins, but I need to study here before I can return."

The irony is that in some respects, it would be easier to live in a school not known for supernatural aspects. They would be far less likely to suspect her to be a demon... so long as she used precisely none of her powers. Here, powers were normal... yet the belief in the supernatural ranked barely worse than 'People who Must Breathe to Survive'.

"I'm probably going to stick around town once I graduate, if nothing else. I really have no clue what else I'm planning on doing at this point. I'll probably figure it out later though." she explained.

((A day and a half, and then I won't be such a busy scrub! XD))

"Well if things aren't great at home, then I suppose it makes sense to want to stick around here... It seems like a nice enough place."

Asher reached up, momentarily fiddling with the ornate cross pendant hanging from his neck. He still found himself feeling bad for the girl -- family was such an important priority to Asher that it seemed unthinkable to be on such poor terms. He'd have to pray for her.

"But I'll be in the opposite situation.. As soon as I graduate, it'll be back home to Austria to continue training -- demons don't slay themselves after all, right?"

Oh, the irony indeed.

"Ok, so he is a gung-ho demonslayer. Goody. Hopefully if he finds out about my little secret, he'll have at least the sense to not go smite-happy on me." she thought, keeping her thoughts and her expression separate. If he ever found out, she'd have to hope he would have the wisdom to at least consider his personal experience with her before making a slaying plan. She would most certainly not enjoy trying to fight for her life against him. She wouldn't mention it for now, it would likely draw too much suspicion from the paladin.

"Well, I'm glad you have a plan at least." she told him "Still, I guess four years is a good way to figure out what to do with the rest of my life."

Of course, another statement played in her mind "...the rest of my semi-eternal life."

((On vacation and finally home! Time to not be a scrub.))

This girl seemed friendly enough, and yet .... There was something about her that seemed a bit pensive. She was definitely holding back from Asher, in some way -- but then again, wasn't it a bit normal to act guarded with a person you'd just met? Asher shrugged off the thought... He was probably thinking way too much.

Instead, he simply offered a warm smile to her.

"Yes, there is a certain security that comes from knowing your future plans," he said, "But I'm sure there's a little freedom in having your options open like you. In any event, I'll be sure to pray for your guidance... If there's any way I can be helpful to you, I'd be happy to."
