Dakota's so far had no luck. She continues to practice trying to control her darkness in meditation. However, no such luck. Even cutting off a sliver of her lifeforce made it hurt too much to effectively control it, pain is effective at cutting one's concentration. This is what has lead to her fighting style thus far, one she has dubbed 'Magical Brute Force'. The energy created by converting her life force into darkness was naturally more potent than what others could gather from nature. However, given the artificial nature of her powers, they had the peculiar property of forcing her to make her own darkness from her lifeforce in to that natural force rather than gathering it straight from nature.

Dakota almost laughed. She had taken an Advil in order to see if it would ease the pain using her powers caused. But such a mundane medication was totally unqualified to reduce a supernatural source of pain, along the lines one shredding their own lifeforce for power.

Anyone seeing her can see the pale skinned girl wince every once in a while from the pain caused by snipping off pieces of her life force to use as fuel. It would recover, but it was still painful.

"I see the rumor of a new student were true."

Should Dakota look about she'd see a new face at the door to the room. A young man with long white hair, and blue eyes. He was wearing simple blue jeans and a dark green shirt, looking into the room directly at the girl. He stepped into the room, arms folded. He could tell she wasn't feeling to good, and likely enough was in pain. He...couldn't exactly allow that to happen without him trying to fix that.

"I'm the instructor of the powers of darkness and light. Welcome to the Elemancers. Are you doing alright?" He asked, cutting straight to the point. Above all else he was worried about students of the tower, especially since the incident with Erin. Any issues of health, no matter how small, were something to be aware of, since one could never know when it would become something MUCH worse.

The pale skinned girl broke out of her meditation. The instructor nearby, it seemed that it was in order to answer his questions, and she stood up.

"I'm Dakota." she said, offering to shake his hand.

Dakota sighs, a bit despondent at her lack of results.

"I'm fine I guess, it's just my darkness elemancy works differently. I was trying to figure out how to actually focus and shape it into something controlled. As is, the power of my attacks is completely dependent on how much darkness I can manage to stuff into it." she explained.

Damon listened on as Dakota spoke, making a note on her name. Sounded American, and the extended hand pretty much confirmed she was from the west. He'd have to remember that for later. But for now, it seemed she was having issues with her power although that didn't seem to be the only problem here. He shook her hand, with a nod. " I'm Damon. What you're dealing with common issue with controlling an Element. It's all a part of the art that we need to perfect at all times. One I'll be happy to help with." He said, before shifting back to his original observation.

"However, that wasn't what I really wanted to know. You seem to be in a bit of pain. Is something wrong?" He asked, a semi-worried look on his face. He'd prefer honesty here, more than anything due to the issues that had occurred in past months.

It was a good thing an instructor was here.

"Yeah, my powers are causing me pain." she told him "See, my powers are artificial... let's just say I had a bad run in with an evil cult, who wanted to use me as a human battery. Anyways though, I'm getting off track. My darkmancy doesn't 'gather' from the surrounding area. Rather, I have to convert my own life force into elemental darkness. One on hand, the energy's naturally much more potent this way. One the other, it has the same effect as taking a wound."

She took a breath.

"Naturally, this kinda thing causes a lot of pain, in addition to 'I'm one step closer to being knocked unconscious or worse in a fight'. In fact, if I cast enough spells, I roughly feel as if someone set all my vital organs on fire. So you can imagine why it'd incredibly difficult to actually fine-tune control the stuff while under that much pain. The only way I've been able to do anything with it is by stuffing as much of my energy as possible into the spells. I've tried to start with small amounts, but that isn't working because even though it hurts more, I have to focus on something small while in pain." she explained.

...God dammit. Always was the users of darkness who had 'interesting' stories on their powers. It sounded like this student was going to be an...interesting case. Damon continued to listen on, thinking on what the girl was saying, unsure of how to deal with this situation. The word 'spells' made him twitch. This was going to be complicated. Especially since, well, he had no information on MAGIC based Elemancy.

"...Hmm." He grumbled out as he pondered what to say. "As much as I dislike saying this, I have no information on your type of Elemancy. I specialize in the natural control of darkness, it's manipulation and usage. I might be able to help you use that instead, at least for practice or something. Using one's life force for training, or even for actual proper use, sounds a bit too dangerous for your level."

He extended his right hand to her, a black sphere forming in his hand from the darkness in the room. "Can you move this? Without using your hands?" He asked, letting go of his direct control over it, and letting it passively exist in it's current state.

"Well, if it's incantations and cantrips and stuff like that, you mean, it's not 'magic' like that, though I always figured all elemancy counted as magic anyways. What else would you call it?" Dakota shrugged.

Dakota attempted to control the ball, but failed miserably, she vaguely tried to focus on it. It was either she couldn't control energy she hadn't made or she couldn't control energy that wasn't within her

"Maybe I just can't focus my will on external darkness, just internal darkness." she stated "Although I do know how to act as an darkness elemental battery of sorts."

Damon shook his head the magic comment. Elemancy being called magical had always rubbed him the wrong way. "I know magicians, and I know Elemancers. There's a big difference between the manipulation of nature and the manipulation of magic." He said, preparing to give a small lecture on the differences between the two as she tried to manipulate it and failed.

She explained she used her powers to act as more of a battery than anything else. This...was going to be an interesting test of his teaching capability. "Alright. First, let's dispell the idea of elemancers being magicians." He said, thinking on that right now.

"The biggest difference is the source of power, really. Magicians use their own supply of mana and the like, they draw in their power from themselves. The typical Elemancer doesn't do that. We...borrow from nature, and work with it. Magic users have preplanned spells that do specific things. Elemancers....have a lot more variability." He said, the sphere morphing into a sword, then into a shield, then into a book.

"That being said...the way you describe yourself is like something of a...hybrid. Which is possible, I suppose. There are exceptions to every generalization..." He said, thinking on this. "I think I'm going to have to confer with the Elemental Aeons in order to figure out a proper way to train you. I don't like my students being hurt."

"That does describe my powers pretty well." she mentioned. Her powers were based on drawing it. However, having so little control over what she could exactly do with it, had only found two ways to manifest it, though they weren't 'spells', she'd come up with them by finding two ways to conduct her energy through her body.

She then considers the Aeons. She'd never heard of them before. She'd have to ask.

"Aeons? Are they like the council in charge of this place?" she asked him.

Damon chuckled a bit at Dakota's question. "Sort of, but not quite. They're the ones in charge above us instructors, to an extent, but they're by no means a council. They're high powered elemental entities, born of nature itself." He said, beginning his explanation with that. "Some Elemancers have elemental partners, beings composed of their element who are fully sentient. I've got a young shadow elemental I take care of, my friend Chizu, the Aeromancy instructor, has a family-bound air elemental as a helper. The Aeons are elementals who are quite old and powerful, and help guide us in training students." He said, explaining the Aeons themselves.

"They're pretty reclusive, for the most part. They don't like dealing in the affairs of humans, which is why they appointed us to teach. They don't want to force their will on us, but they also don't want to stand by and watch us flail around with our powers in stupid ways."

"Well then, I guess they'd practically be walking encyclopedias for magi..." Dakota stops herself.

"Elemancy." she corrects herself. If old habits die hard, then semi-new habits die with a small bit of resistance.

"So, do I need to come with you, or do the Aeons not comfortable with people they don't know?" she asked. There's a chance that it may be a stupid question, but she's does have a valid reason to ask. After all, it's often a good idea to have people you're describing the problems of there to help. On the other hand, ancient, powerful spirits of the elements may be uneasy, cynical, or the like.

"I'll be meeting with them on my own before I head home later tonight. For the most part they are kind of anti-social, save for Cosmos. Tonberry's a bit....direct, and Chaos isn't all there." He said, with a sigh. He knew all the other instructors had their own peculiar superiors, but sometimes it felt like he got the short end of the stick. It was oftentimes like bickering children, ESPECIALLY when he was being coached by Cosmos in the usage of Light.

"I'll have whatever information they give me ready by tomorrow, once they give me a place to start researching from. Aside from that though, is there anything else you need?" He asked, before realizing something. "And before I forget!" He said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small purple sphere. "Your 'Ticket' for riding the Aeon Doomtrain, and welcome gift for the group." He said, holding it out to her.

Dakota took the materia from Damon.

"Thanks." she told him. It would be useful to know a bit more about how her powers exactly worked. So far, in recap, in addition to the difference between magic and elemancy, be she'd learned that she was a bit of a misfit, a hybrid between a mage and an elemancer. She culled power from a source other than nature, like a mage would. However, the actual manifestation of her power was elemancy based. Apparently, Damon would be consulting with the Aeons.

She then leaves the tower, summoning Doomtrain. She didn't think it was such a good idea to summon a train inside, even if it was a magical spirit.
