Hinata nodded silently and mindlessly pushed around the carrot slices she had just cut into cute hearts and flowers. “I guess so,” she sighed, “perhaps I’m just used to kids being kids and not having to be part of galactic battles and have their lives threatened.” The nurse was thinking of Kira, one of the students at Hyakuji High, that apparently was a Kampfer and part of a long going battle. Hina glanced at Hiro with a weak smile, “Although, I don’t think I’ll ever stop worrying, it’s in my nature to do so, but I’ll do my best in trying to accept that we have a group of amazing students that have the ability to take care of themselves. I’ll just have make sure that they all know that I’m always here if they need guidance or just want to chat for a bit.” Already feeling better about the subject and like she was starting to accept that the students didn’t always need her to look out for them, albeit very slowly, Hinata replied with a soft laugh to the teachers question about sukiyaki , “Yes, of course I’ve had it often; every winter to be more precise. But this is the first time I'm having it together with a colleague so I'm glad to share this experience with you,” she locked eyes with Hiro for a few seconds before turning her head away and looking down at the soon finished chopped assortment of vegetables, “and it’s one my favorite meals, so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to have it.” Finishing chopping and slicing the vegetable Hinata shuffled them into the pot and then washed her hands. Leaning against the counter while drying her hands with the apron she watched Hiro work for a while wondering why he had asked her over. Was this a date night or was there something else he had in mind? Biting down on her lower lip Hina thought about asking the teacher straightforwardly about it but then decided to keep it to herself, if he wanted to say something then they had the whole evening to talk about it. |

"I guess you'll see once a little action happens," Hiro laughed softly as he continued working to prepare the pot, "I mean I am concerned for them... but when you see it first hand maybe you'll understand my point of view a little better. Most of them spring into action excitedly all on their own without a word from the school itself." He could understand Hina, however. She held the point of view he did when he first moved into the city and took a job teaching at the school. "I see," Hiro commented after listening intently to Hina's story about sukiyaki, "I reallly don't have traditional stuff like this often so I'm happy to share the experience with you then." As the final ingredients were added in, Hiro began to add the soy sauce and mirin. Turning one of the nearby knobs he began to have the pot heated to begin cooking. "Guess now it's just a waiting game," Hiro commented as he looked up cheerfully from the pot and gave Hina a friendly grin. It was certainly a different situation from what he was used to. Well, that is to say he was used to cooking. However, not with someone like Hina actively by his side helping him in the process. It was safe to say... it felt nice. |

“I guess so,” Hinata replied returning the broad smile and took off the apron, placing it to the side and brushed off her hands. “So, what should we do while waiting?” she asked Hiro glancing his way before looking at the pot and sweeping her eyes over the living room area. Usually when she had nabe it would be at a kotatsu. Sitting by a table with a blanket and eating nabe together with others was something Hinata associated with the cold fall and winter, but it was also a very nice way to spend time together with friends. Snuggled up under a blanket, eating and talking was actually preferable to her compared to silently sitting in front of the TV and concentrate on what was happening on the screen instead of socializing. Taking a few steps forward and then looking back over her shoulder Hina curiously asked Hiro “Do you have a kotatsu? It wouldn’t really be the same experience without one,” she gave him a warm smile, “If you don’t maybe we could temporarily construct one of our own?” Gesturing to the coffee table with a small nod she continued, “If you don’t mind we could use your coffee table and put a thick blanket over it, and then we’d just need a large tray or something similar for the table top. I think it would work fine." Hina turned around to face the teacher with a broad smile, "What do you say?” She sounded exited and like she was having a lot of fun despite that she was just standing there in the kitchen talking about making their own kotatsu. It didn’t even cross her mind to ask if Hiro had the ability to create one with the help of his magic. Hina still wasn’t completely familiar with his magic after all and didn’t know his limitations or if it was appropriate so ask such a thing of him. |

"I'm afraid I don't own one," Hiro commented as he checked the iron pot, "I probably should though, huh? Your idea sounds great though~" Leaving the pot to continue cooking Hiro began to move towards his bedroom to get a blanket like Hina had requested. It was true, of course, that he could have just used magic to poof them a kotatsu. However, when possible he wanted to avoid boldly using his powers for mundane things. That had only led to trouble in the past. Returning he gave Hina a friendly nod as he held up the blanket and then moved to sit it down near the coffee table and begin clearing everything off from it. In the back of his mind the Arcadia Mission loomed on his mind. There was no more putting it off. He could say something tonight or maybe never at all. Shaking his head slowly as he finished clearing the table he decided to push it back further; at least until they were eating. "If you don't care to finish up," Hiro commented cheerfully, "I'll go check on the sukiyaki." |

Hinata followed Hiro into the living room and waited there until he returned with a blanket. She helped him clear off the coffee table and nodded happily “Sure, I’ll get it ready and you can continue with the dinner.” After placing two sofa pillows down beside the coffee table for them to sit on Hina placed the blanket on top of the table and started to set the table. She went back and forth between the kitchen and living room, giving Hiro a smile every time she passed him by carrying bowls and drinking glasses with her, as well as chopsticks and everything else needed for the food. It felt surprisingly natural to be doing all of this; she setting the table when he was cooking, casting each other glances and small smiles while making comments and jokes. For Hinata it felt very easy to interact with Hiro and she enjoyed his company very much. When the living room was all done and after Hina had to restrain herself from lighting candles all around she returned to the kitchen and stood beside Hiro, looking down at the pot. Despite that he had claimed that he wasn’t all too skilled with making nabe he seemed to be a natural. “The table is set,” she informed him with a smile and took whiff before saying with praise, “It smells wonderful~!” Hinata felt hungry just by looking at the food and all they needed to do now was to bring the pot over to the table and dig in. |

"Thanks," Hiro commented happily as Hina finished her task, "The sukiyaki is ready as well." Carefully, Hiro took the pot and carried it over to the set up Hina had made. Gently, it placed it in the center of the table and then returned to the kitchen to finish getting everything ready. Drawing out two small bowls he cracked open an egg into each one beating them just a bit before taking those to the table as well and sitting one on each side. Returning to the kitchen he motioned for Hina to go ahead as he added, "I'll be there in just a minute." The only element left now was their drinks. Hiro checked the fridge and carefully mulled over options. He'd need all the courage he could get to try and actually talk over Arcadia's situation with her. Letting out a soft sigh he grabbed a rather fancy bottle of sake and fetched two glasses to be used with it and returned to Hina and took his seat opposite of her as he sat down the sake. "To match being so traditional," he commented with a laugh. Inside he hoped she wouldn't misconstrue the gesture as him trying to get her drunk or something. Ultimately, it didn't matter. The reason why would become all too clear once he began to explain things. "Go ahead," Hiro added with a confident smirk, "I want you to taste first. Critique my work~" |

Hinata watched Hiro as he carefully carried the pot to the living room and placed it on the table she had prepared. When he returned to her she nodded in agreement with a short “Okay,” as he encouraged her to go and sit by the table. Walking over to the table Hina lowered herself down to her knees and took of her heels, placing them to the side, before taking a seat on the pillow she had placed on the floor earlier. Carefully lifting the blanket to tuck her legs in under Hinata waited for Hiro to return. Smiling as the male teacher walked towards her with a bottle of sake Hina laughed as well as she replied, “Yes, it is only fitting.” As she waited for Hiro to take his seat she couldn’t help feel a little excited over sharing a meal like this with Hiro, it felt close and personal and she liked it. Giving the teacher another smile across the table the nurse joked in response to Hiro’s words, "Okay. Although I doubt there will be any critique; it smells divine.” Looking down at the pot with hungry eyes she held her chopsticks and pinched, grabbing hold of a thin slice of meat and on one of her flower shaped carrots she dipped them in the raw egg before guiding the small bite to her mouth. Chewing happily, and letting a small humming “Mmm!” inform Hiro that it tasted wonderful before she could do so with words, Hina quickly swallowed and grinned “I can’t believe that you believe that you claim that you aren’t that skilled with this kind of cooking! Because it tastes great!” Pinching some noodles between her chopsticks she took another bite and cheerfully gazed across the table Maybe the food really did taste that fantastic but the fact that she was with Hiro and they were having a nice time together probably elevated her sensory response. |

"It can't be that great," Hiro said happily feeling a bit embarrassed by Hina's rave review. Laughing softly Hiro snagged one of the thin slices of meat and followed suit his eyes widening a little in shock at the taste. "Huh, maybe I am not giving myself enough credit," he added confirming Hina's own opinion. And so it was that the two shared a home made dinner together. As the night wore on and they talked of various things, including the state of affairs with the the school of course, Hina couldn't help but notice Hiro seemed to be drinking the sake a lot faster than her own pace. Truly, she didn't know his own preferences on things like this but the reality was he was simply too nervous. Finally, as a bit of silence fell between them Hiro took on a more serious look as he took another sip of sake. "Hina," he spoke in a soft tone curiously dropping any kind of honorific from her name as he usually used, "This has been really nice, but... I didn't just invite you over for dinner. There's something.... well... let's just say there's something important happening tomorrow night. I felt like I needed to talk to you about it beforehand..." His words seemed almost ominous as if whatever this event was it might suddenly change everything. This wasn't far from the truth. The threat of Cthulhu was overbearing and Arcadia's failure would drastically effect the entire planet itself. That was why he was so resolute at victory in this instance and why, since it might be the last time, he wanted to open up to someone about what would be going on. |

It was so easy to be in Hiro’s company and Hinta continued to feel that familiar pull of attraction towards him as the night progressed, but the sake helped her relax slightly instead of being aware of what she felt and feeling stressed about keeping it hidden. Although her company’s steady intake of the beverage made her wonder if he was drinking out of nervousness or if he usually drank this way and could handle it. She was little of a ‘heavyweight’ herself and could handle her liquor but she wasn’t drinking more just because she could and she doubted that Hiro was drinking to get drunk. It seemed like Hiro had seen the sake as liquid courage because as the conversation slowed down a little, and a comfortable silence settled over them, Hiro spoke in a way that instantly made Hinata worried. Maybe she was jumping too quickly to the worst situation possible but with a mothering nature like hers you always feared the worst and hopefully would be relieved when it turned out to be not that serious. But to be honest, Hiro’s tone of voice or facial expression didn’t do much to convince her of the opposite. Actually, he made her even wonder if her worst case scenario wasn’t serious enough. Putting her chopsticks to the side Hinata looked at Hiro with a frown, “Sens-“ she stopped herself then started again, “Hiro… wh- what are you trying to say?” Her voice was laced with anxiousness and the atmosphere had suddenly gotten a somewhat ominous feeling to it. If she wasn’t there just for a dinner then why was she? And what was that ‘something important’ happening tomorrow night? Hina sat silently meeting Hiro’s gaze, waiting for him to continue because he had said that he wanted to talk to her about it. Although she was starting to get a really bad feeling about this. "You are worrying me..." she confessed with a low voice. post # 700! Yaaaayifications! xD Edited by Lelil, Nov 25 2011, 12:52 AM.

"Ah, let's see," he began trying to grasp for the right way to frame the situation. His eyes locked with Hina's and she could see the concern and worry in them. Realizing this possibility the mage quickly averted his gaze down to the pot of sukiyaki between them. Even if he had to stumble through it he had to talk about it. It was now or never. "You know how sometimes the students have to fight to protect the city," he began trying to start with something similar she already knew about, "Well.... something like that is happening tomorrow. I'm actually overseeing it, but the school has no knowledge of what's going on." Having said this Hiro realized how bad it sounded and nervously began to wave his hands as he tried to backpedal. "I mean," he continued, "It's not like I have some agenda. It is for a really good reason... and there's no other alternative. The only thing is... this time it's something really serious. Like deadly serious. Losing will have far wider consequences than just students being injured. They've already committed to it so it's something we won't back down on." "But I'll make sure they get home," Hiro added with a strong sense of determination in his voice, "I've already come to that decision. Regardless of the outcome tomorrow night. The students will come back..." His words trailed off. He wouldn't say what the worst case scenario would spell for him, but carefully reading between the lines his intent wasn't very hard to discern. He had avoided mentioning Arcadia thus far, but he knew he'd have to talk about it eventually. |

The fact that Hiro avoided to meet her gaze was another sign that something was going on, something serious because Hiro didn’t strike her as someone who would beat around the bush if it was some small issue. Besides, they were both colleagues so if it was about a student there was no need to be evasive. Hina shifted her legs under her and leaned a little forward as Hiro started to speak sounding very nervous, and he should be because what he was saying made the young nurse feel shocked and alarmed. She was unable to speak and her mouth was slightly open as she continued listening to Hiro and how he tried to explain what was happening tomorrow night. Students sometimes help defending the city… like the first school day and that robot came from the future... Hinata was also aware that there were students working in the WDA and other organizations like it with certain missions, but this… this sounded much more dangerous. And the school doesn’t even know… what about parents? Do they know? This sounded so drastic, so sudden, and Hinata didn’t know how to react. A part of her was honestly outraged that Hiro was actually speaking of students and the possibility of them not returning home. The words ‘Deadly serious’ echoed in her head. And the fact that he was implying that he perhaps wouldn’t return wasn’t lost on her. It actually sounded like he was prepared to sacrifice himself for the sake of the students… But what was, as he had put it, a ‘good reason enough’ to make it possibly worth sacrificing his own and young students’ lives? Hinata felt upset and angry and confused and sad and so many other emotions as well. He had said that there was no other alternative and since this doomed day was obviously tomorrow it was probably true; you did not start thinking of other solutions only during the eleventh hour. “You can’t… you have to… I… “ she struggled to get the words out coherently and keep her voice calm after he was done speaking. “I am tr- trying to understand… But this is just! I…” Hina glanced to the side with almost a desperate expression on her face before giving Hiro a pleading look “You can’t just tell me something like that...” her voice faltered for a moment and she had to swallow hard, “You can’t just tell me something like that without an explanation! I can't... I don’t understand! Why? Why is this needed??” Hinata closed her eyes and pressed a hand against her temple while shaking her head as if she tried to deny Hiro’s words or maybe clear her mind and shake away the severity of the situation. “All I hear is that something very dangerous is going to happen and you and young students are going to put your lives at risk!” the tone of her voice made it more than obvious that she was upset. Hinata was that type of nurturing and compassionate woman who cared for those younger almost like children; she automatically felt a responsibility for their safety and wellbeing. But that also came with a ferocious protectiveness and she would do anything to keep them from harm. “I can go instead! Can I go instead?” she suddenly blurted out and perked up, as if this was the solution to all problems and would keep the students safe. It was a naïve way to think and she didn’t even know yet what this dangerous situation entailed. Edited by Lelil, Nov 25 2011, 03:32 AM.

Hina's outburst caught Hiro off guard and he was surprised to see her reaction. However, after she asserted going in their place his determination only became stronger. He had seen first hand, if only for a glimpse, what Cthulhu could do and there was no way he wanted to subject anyone not already involved in Arcadia (Hina especially) to its forces. "Arcadia," Hiro blurted out suddenly. This was on purpose. Now that he had uttered the name there was no way to take it back or avoid discussing it. "I run a secret organization called Arcadia," Hiro admitted now having the courage to tell Hina the truth in hopes of quelling any desire she had to go herself, "We were formed and backed by the Japanese Government with the task of protecting Hyakuji and in a greater sense all of Japan from supernatural threats." "I've been recruiting promising students from my Supernatural Studies class as members," he admitted as he hung his head low knowing Hina would most likely not have a favorable view of such an action, "But you can't go, Hina. This is business for Arcadia and Arcadia only. Regular people can't get involved." "I'm sorry," he apologized in a sincere tone as he looked back up locking his eyes with her own with a pleading gaze, "But I promise you. No matter what happens tomorrow night... the students will return here safe." Once again, he left out any mention of his own fate. Hiro had become resolute at this point. Those who had joined Arcadia had done so of their own free will and had been offered time and again in the past to cut losses and part from the group. He knew they wanted to fight and protect the world from Cthulhu. However, many of them were still only teenagers. He wouldn't allow them to spoil their life in this matter no matter the cost. |

This was absurd. Hinata wanted to laugh out loud and dismiss their whole conversation as a bad joke. A really bad joke. But Hina knew that it wasn’t, if not by the serious subject or Hiro’s words then by his facial expressions. Determination and seriousness played over the man’s face, he knew what he had to do and was going to fulfill that goal but he also showed some of the cracks in his façade when worry and protectiveness for the students shone through. Hina met Hiro’s gaze as he apologized and she stared back at him, in that fleeting moment she looked into his eyes she felt how fear grasped around her heart and squeezed tight, giving her a small taste of what she maybe would feel in a near furture. She shoved the blanket off her legs, pushed herself off the floor and got up on her feet with a panicked “No!” Taking several steps away from the table and Hiro Hinata turned her back on him and wrapped her arms around her small waist, lifted her shoulders and hung her head. This was too much. Too much! They had just a few hours ago talked about how she struggled with seeing young students with heavy burdens and responsibilities and now Hiro was telling her that he was recruiting students for a secret organization! Closing her eyes and shaking her head in protest Hinata could feel how her eyes burned with tears, even her breathing had picked up and become shallow from the panic and anxiousness she was feeling over these news. She wanted to believe Hiro, she really did, but how could anyone guarantee other peoples safety like that? He didn’t know what was going to happen to the students and he couldn’t be at all places at the same time to save and protect every single one. And what about him? So far Hiro had only promised that the students would return unharmed but who was going to protect him? Who was going to save him? Tears welled up in her eyes and brimmed over, falling quickly down her cheeks, as she opened her eyes to look down at the floor. She didn’t know what to react to first. That Hiro was the leader of a secret organization? The fact that it had government support? Or that Hiro was recruiting students? The same students Hina met and patched up in the nurses office. While she was seen as a ‘regular’ person students several years younger than her was allowed to face this extreme danger, a danger she still hadn’t got explained to her. “Can’t someone else do it? Can’t the government send someone else?” Hina asked with a low voice as she sniffed and wiped her cheeks with her back still turned to Hiro, “Why you? Why the young students?” She didn’t know what kind of organization Hiro was the leader of but surely there had to be other capable organizations that could go instead of them? Hinata was so against the idea of Hiro and the students putting their life at risk and she still didn’t understand why they were doing it and what they were going to face. She finally turned around to look at Hiro to face Hiro with tear streaked cheeks and glossy eyes, “What is going to happen?” |

"Because," Hiro began as he stood up from the table feeling crushed to see what he was putting Hina through already, "I'm... no... We are the best. Left unchecked... these sort of problems could end up threatening the entire world. It's not the kind of situation where it can be left for just whoever stumbles upon it to solve the problem." Slowly, he approached Hina as she calmed slightly and questioned what was going to happen. Reaching out a hand he gently touched her face for the first time wiping away her tears with a soft motion. "I'm sorry," Hiro spoke apologetically, "I knew how you felt about this type of thing... but still... I don't want to keep secrets from you either. Especially with what is going down tomorrow night." Letting out a soft sigh Hiro turned away from Hina feeling torn in both directions. He didn't want to make things worse, but she had asked and he couldn't like to her at this point. "An alien creature.... no, a monster of immense power... that came from far beyond the stars landed on Earth a long time ago," Hiro began as he clenched his fist tightly, "Long before recorded history. It ravaged the Earth and held all humanity under its control. Something happened and it fell into a deep death-like slumber, but a prophecy existed about its return." "For the past few months," Hiro continued shaking his head slowly, "We... Arcadia, I mean, have been fighting a cult determined to re-awaken this monster. Just recently we mounted a final attack, but we were too late. Even though the cult was defeated their ritual was finished just in time. We've spent the past week training and preparing. If we don't stop that thing when it wakes up then it won't just be the students in Arcadia that are in danger... all my students, you, Hyakuji... no, the entire world will be at its mercy." "I can't let that happen," Hiro added turning back to face Hina once more with a fire burning in his eyes, "Never again." |

Born with a heart broken from the start

As she felt Hiro’s gentle hand on her wet cheek Hinata closed her eyes and tilter her head a little, leaning in to it. His hand felt nice and soothing against her cheek, it was a warm and tender touch and the inner turmoil she was feeling slowed down a little just enough for her to be able to compose herself. Slowly Hina exhaled a long breath as she opened her eyes and felt how some of that pent-up anxiety she had within her was released. She looked at Hiro as his hand dropped and he turned away from her while speaking. She was listening intently to what he was saying and the shock from the reveal temporarily slowed down the stream of tears. Alien monster? Hinata repeated to herself with utter disbelief. How was it possible that such a powerful creature had never been heard of before? And how could anyone be stupid enough to want to wake it up?! Had the cult been naïve enough to think that they could control a monster just because they were the ones who woke it? If this alien had once had humanity in its grasp then it could do it again and the cult, more likely, wouldn’t be spared. Hiro said that they, Arcadia, had been training for this moment. That meant that they had been training knowing, despite Hiro’s promises, that there was a possibility of them not returning back home. Had the young students gone through with painful task of saying good bye to the ones they loved and held dear or weren’t they allowed to say anything? The thought of the young students having to do that made Hinata’s eyes brim over with tears once again and she hurriedly tried to wipe them away. She felt ashamed over her reaction to this revelations, she felt weak for acting like this in front of Hiro. Perhaps he had told her all this in hope that she would be supportive and help him carry a part of this heavy burden, but instead she had immediately acted negatively to the whole situation and was now having a minor emotional meltdown. She wanted to be strong for him and for the students, but she couldn’t right now. As Hiro turned back to her with such determination in both his voice and eyed Hina couldn’t help having selfish thoughts. She didn’t want the students to risk their lives for this mission and she didn’t want Hiro to sacrifice his life for them, for all of us. She wanted to send someone else, anyone but them. It didn’t matter if Arcadia was the best, Hinata didn’t want them to go. But even if that somehow would been arranged it would still be the same situation but somewhere else; another woman would be crying from worry and fear and another man would be prepared to give up his life for the sake of others but also for the rest of the country and the world. And still she continued to think about the fact that if Hiro did keep his promise about the students’ safety, did that mean that this was the last time she would see him? Hinata started to sob loudly and lifted shaky hands to cover her face and with a chocked up voice said, “I- I’m s-sorry…” She was apologizing for not being able to be stronger. She was apologizing for not being able to go instead of the students. She was apologizing for not supporting Hiro. She was apologizing for Arcadia having to put themselves in danger for her sake and everyone else’s. She was apologizing for that this could very well be Hiro’s last night at home and there was nothing she could do about it. And she was apologizing for her own cowardice and inability to express the feelings she had for him. ((lol, I think it’s funny that Hina is all “He is gonna dieeeeeee!! D= “ instead of trying to be positive and believe that Hiro is a survivor ;P )) |
