Earlier That Day

SOMEWHERE IN DOWNTOWN HYAKUJI...

In a garage nestled within the urban sprawl of Hyakuji, one of its residents was making some modifications to a new purchase she'd just made. Finding a motorcycle in Japan that wasn't some variation of a practically-plastic Kawasaki was hard enough as it was, and so when Robyn found her ideal mode of transportation, it needed some work done on it to say the least. On the upside she'd gotten a great deal on it and by purchasing it from an American soldier residing on the island, even got to do the transaction in English which was a welcome change.

The weather had chilled significantly but she still managed to break a sweat taking apart and reattaching the various parts of the bike. The owner of the garage had a few space heaters plugged in nearby so the other mechanics could be kept warm without wasting money on heating by gas, and still allow for the main door to the garage to be open to let in the occasional breeze. While the other grease monkies were initially more busy chatting her up than they were doing their own repairs and upgrades (her type was quite the rarity in their neck of the woods), she was quick to assert herself and make it known that she knew what she was doing and she was not here to pick up a date.

She had donned an old pair of OD green cargo pants and tucked them into a pair of black, leather boots that came just below her knee, knowing she wouldn't feel bad about wiping her greasy hands on them (which she'd already done numerous times). At least they were still more flattering than a mechanic jumpsuit, and the beltloops were convenient for attaching her holsters and a small tool belt. She also had pulled out an old white t-shirt that she tied into a knot at the waist after getting a bit too warm, and finally a pair of goggles rested around her neck for use during any potential soldering.

She was already fulfilling one cliche of "hot chick with a bike," so she didn't need to become another one by wearing hot pants and a cropped tanktop while working on her upgrades. While she wasn't quite "scantily-clad hot girl greased up in a garage," she at least meet a few of those criteria whether she intended to or not.

Robyn stood up from where she'd been crouching next to the bike and took a few steps back, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand and looking the bike over with a feeling of pride. This was the first thing she'd been truly excited about in a long time, and she couldn't wait to get it on the road even if it wasn't ideal riding temperature outside. With an anticipatory smile curving onto her face, she took up her position once again.

"I think you're almost done," she quietly commented with a lingering grin, picking up a wrench and getting back to work.

He wasn't sure if he would enjoy or hate the upcoming winter. He's had enough bad experiences with anything related with frozen water, having nearly met his death a few times no thanks to the aforementioned element. And in his lifetime as a self-conscious virus, winter had never been anything pleasant. Cue flashback of last year's event, when the entire WDA was shut down and they had to go against a group of super soldiers intending to eradicate the whole WDA.

At the same time, he couldn't wait for Christmas.

Damn, it's cold, he thought, as he shivered in his usual black sweater. He probably should have taken that trench coat with him when he decided to go out for a walk. Really, Seth should stop overworking himself to keep him company during the day. There really wasn't anything to do with him soundly asleep in his head. It was boring staying there in his room all alone with that dozing blue furball of his.

Yawn.

He began to wonder about the latest Shonen Jump release when his eyes randomly drifted into one of the shops around, or more specifically, a garage. Nothing interestig save for some sweaty dudes working on their bikes and getting dejected after a failed attempt of hitting on a lady--oh hey look Robyn. This will be a very coincidental encounter for sure, he thought as he began to crossed the road, heading towards the undoubtedly much warmer garage.

"Well isn't this surprising. You actually do have a hobby," He said with a small grin as he approached her, hopping over some toolboxes and grease puddle, making his way towards the aforementioned 'hot chick with a bike' in the workshop. "Though you could have probably picked something that doesn't involve making others drool," He said as he scratched his head, glancing over to some of the garage occupants who were staring daggers at him for some reason. Though he probably knew what was going on their mind, considering the person working on the bike in front of him. "But I have to agree with them one way or another, it looks hot," He said teasingly, totally commenting on the bike and not the sexy chick with a bike.

Yep. It was totally the bike.

Robyn's ears perked up and she redirected her attention upon the completion of tightening one of the bolts on the bike. After recognizing the voice she decided to do little more than turn her head to look over her shoulder, figuring a fully-standing greeting was not necessary (not that she knew many people for whom it was). The girl rolled her eyes at the hobby comment and waited for him to get closer before she spoke up.

"It's a 'functional' hobby, and one I've been meaning to take up for a while. Having to walk everywhere gets old pretty fast in this place, so I splurged a bit."
Despite the fact that she was more than willing to drop 2000 yen a week on coffee, she was generally frugal with her money. So breaking down and getting something worth a few months' paychecks all at once was a bit dampening to her spirit, but it was quickly restored by the fact that she now owned a motorcycle.

She took the wrench and tested out a few bolts here and there to make sure they were secure, and once she was satisfied, she pushed herself up by pressing her hands into her crouched legs, giving the appendages a shake after being in one position for so long. The girl laughed at his other commentary, untying the knot in her t-shirt and proceeding to wipe the grease off her hands as best she could.

"Right. As if considering the reactions of others had any factor in me buying a bike. I suppose you'd rather I knit sweaters or something?" she inquired jokingly, crossing her arms in front of her chest. She took a step back which inevitably placed her beside the visitor and took a look over the bike. She could simply not keep the grin from spreading across her face, placing her hands on her hips with a look of satisfaction. Now hopefully the practical exercise would be just as successful.

"Should give it a test drive, see how the upgrades took... I'll be right back,"
she said to no one in particular, nodding in agreeance with herself before disappearing through a door.

* * *
Robyn returned in a completely different outfit, seemingly transformed from the grungy girl working on the bike just a few minutes ago into a more appropriate cliche. Her hair fell loose at her shoulders since "wearing a helmet is impossible with a ponytail," and in lieu of a greasy t-shirt and cargo pants she put on some worn leather pants paired with a leather jacket and boots (aka this-ish without the earrings). Over her shoulder a duffle bag had been slung carrying her other belongings, and tucked under the other arm was her shiny new helmet. Somewhere in the garage a very large, metal object was dropped along with a few, more silent jaws.

She placed her bag and helmet on the ground and kicked a leg over the seat of the bike to sit down, tilting the bike until it was properly vertical. She made whatever minor adjustments she needed to with her posture and seating, getting a feel for the handles and the motorcycle in general. As if anticipating the moment of truth, she put the key in the ignition and turned, the engine roaring to life.

"Now THAT is hot," she said with a bold smile and a spark of excitement in her eyes as she gave the throttle a few revs, the sound of the motor seeming to be multiplied within the confined walls of the garage. Once the motor died back down to a steady rumble, she released the handlebars and sat upright, turning and looking at him expectantly. "Well?"

"You know, I can't help but realize that you're wearing more than you usually would," He commented as she disappeared and reappeared, morphing from the grease monkey to the girl in full leather. He wouldn't have been surprised if someone around here would need to pick up some jaws rolling about. Then she proceeded to ask him a single word question, to which he pondered a fair bit before answering, "Le gasp, is the world ending?" He gave a fake gasp of surprise, clasping his hand to his mouth as he opened his eyes wide in mock terror. Shortly after that he gave a small laugh, walking over to the bike and patting on the remaining space of the seat. "I dunno, there are others who would be willing to pay an arm or a leg for this,"

He gave a small sigh, walking over to one of the guys with their jaws on the ground and picked up some random helmet for himself. "Mind if I borrow this? Thanks~" He said, putting it on without waiting for any answer. "Could've spared another one for me, you know," He said, clipping it on as he walked over to the rumbling piece of machinery. "But if this is the last thing I'll be doing before the world ends, I'm not complaining," He added, swinging his leg over the leather seat of the bike and taking his place behind her. "Can we go slow? I wanna enjoy the view,"

"Well you know, safety first. Sliding across the asphalt in shorts would be less pleasant than having the same experience in pants. Not to mention it's way too cold for shorts on a bike this time of year. Sorry to disappoint," she added with a nonchalant shrug as she swept her hair up with one hand and placed her helmet on with the other. Once the strap was secure under her chin she waited for the shift in weight of the bike as he took up his seat behind her.

"Charging... that's not a bad idea. I'm sure there are plenty of weirdos in this town that would play up to some sort of motorcycle fetish. Not that I'd want them anywhere near me or my bike, but I'll keep that on the backburner for desperate measures, or when I piss Jameson off enough that he fires me."

Once both of them were in place and properly seated, she walked the motorcycle forward to exit the garage. It might have been a better idea to test out her upgrades by herself, but she was in a rarely pleasant mood and found herself compelled to offer him a ride. Maybe she was finally getting used to the idea of not entirely isolating herself from the world. There hadn't been an incident in quite some time, and the eggshells she'd been tiptoeing on slowly turned into rocks, allowing her to proceed with a lowered degree of caution.

Besides, out of all the people she knew in the city, she seemed to get along with him the most. Or if nothing else, the two interacted the most, thus resulting in them having the biggest rapport between each other. Maybe a tiny sliver of her even wanted him to tag along for the ride.

Maybe.

"Slow?" she echoed with a laugh as she flipped the visor of her helmet down. "These were upgrades, not downgrades, my dear." And with little warning after a quick glance into traffic, the engine roared once again and tore down the driveway and turned into the street. She gripped the handlebars tightly to compensate for the kick in the acceleration, leaning slightly forward to promote more of a block by the windshield. The girl felt a surge of adrenaline go through her as she wove in between the other cars on the street, knowing full well the extent of the laziness of the cops in that city when it came to traffic tickets.

"If you fall off, it's your fault!"
she yelled over her shoulder, half-joking and half-serious, trying to be heard over the sound of the motorcycle and the rushing wind.

Seeming to take their lives into her hands one too many times, it wasn't long before she found a more rural road heading toward Mount Hyaku with far less traffic on it.

"You alright back there?"

"Alright? Hahah! Of course I'm alright! What makes you think otherwise?"

How about wrapping his hands way too tightly around her waist? Yea, he didn't forget, while he doesn't exactly mind much about bikes going who knows how many miles per hour, the body certainly does. And it's not faring so well with the metavirus who's sharing the same reaction as the original owner of the body. How could anyone possibly have an enjoyment riding these things anyway?! And it doesn't help that she was weaving around endlessly through the traffics of the big city. He might actually throw himself off the bike just because.

He doubted the helmet would help.

How glad he was when they reached the outskirt of the city that doesn't involve her twisting around like a madly terrified snake being chased by an angry flaming tapir. How that weird metaphor managed to come to his mind he wouldn't want to think about it, mostly because he doesn't know why. Well, metaphors aside, "Oi, where the heck are we going? You're not gonna be taking me to some isolated and unknown shady place and do shady stuff on me, now are you?!"

What's terrifying is that he actually thought she would.

"You getting stuck with me in the middle of no where to do 'shady things' is the least of your worries. Not that I'm entirely convinced you wouldn't mind anyway." She wasn't going to wait for him to pick up on that one before moving onto another topic. Not that she was insinuating anything in particular, anyway. "We're heading up to the mountain because one, I've been meaning to check it out and can now do so, and two, there shouldn't be any cops up there to keep me from testing out my upgrade."

She turned the bike off of the main highway and onto the road leading to the towering Mount Hayaku, one that wound up the side but was still wide enough for two vehicles to fit. The extra person on back was kind of nice to help keep her warm from the biting wind they were riding into, and so she wouldn't find herself complaining. Although...

"Alright, it's endearing and all that you need to hang on like a school girl, but you're starting to crush my ribcage. And if I pass out, we're both going down."

This was a perfectly legitimate statement, since she was quite convinced that he was starting to bruise her. It didn't help that he had an abnormal level of strength that hopefully was not activated at the same time. So she backed off on the speed a bit to try and bring him to a closer level of comfort. Although she'd ridden with people before on the bikes used for transportation for WDA missions, this seemed...different. She couldn't put her finger on it, but this had more of a feeling of ease than the regimented approach she took to missions from beginning to end.

Being terrible at starting up small talk, she'd either let him take care of it or be content riding in silence.

Greatly appreciate her slowing down, but he's not in any way more at ease than before. Well... maybe a little bit, knowing that they're no longer attempting to dodge passing death every few seconds or so while riding along the main road in downtown. He's never gonna be used to bikes so long as he's in this body. A bit annoying but he can't really complain much. At this point he'd be glad to switch back with Seth.

Or would he though? It's not everyday that he'd be able to go around wherever he wanted without anyone else nagging at him on what to do or what not to do. See, a metavirus being a freeloader on another person's body usually doesn't have any rights to wander around as they like, so this is like... a special privilege or something. Was he really complaining? He's pretty much living as a human right now, with his own body, his own consciousness, his own mind, his own choice, his own... whatever.

Most of the time he wouldn't even be considered as some'thing' worth empathizing, seeing that he's really just nothing more than some highly advanced artificial microorganism with futuristic complexity. Even with the established fact that he owns his own consciousness and emotion, something that would be enough for him to be considered as a human... or at least a second personality of an unfortunate kid. However no one would acknowledge this fact, except for Seth and Robyn. And Jameson too, he supposed.

But aside from everyone else they're like... the only ones whom accepted V as a some'one'. It's really weird but at the same time it makes sense.

So yea, he's kinda glad to be with someone whom he can talk to as himself without having to hold back or lie or act. The bike steadily gained altitude as she continued up the slope, air whipping his face as he kept on clinging for dear life. Though at this point he's certainly more used to it, giving him some free space in his head to contemplate about stuff that had happened... "Um, say..." He muttered, not loud enough to be considered shouting but certainly audible enough to be heard through the wind. "Do you still remember that... that ball invitation... from summer vacation..." It seemed as though he was carefully picking his words, attempting not to slip up something for some reason. "You... er... Have you given it a thought?"

"Invitation?" she repeated, her stomach feeling like it did a flip.

She'd practically forgotten about it, and at the same time she hadn't. At this point in the game she'd almost thought it was a practical joke since he hadn't mentioned anything since the day at the beach when he nonchalantly handed it to her. His personality was the type where it was difficult for her to tell at times when he was being serious and when he was being exceedingly sarcastic--something she always chocked up to one of his better skills.

She had thought about it quite extensively for the duration of that stay in the beach house, and occasionally upon returning to Hyakuji, but as time went on her thoughts were less and less occupied with such things. Robyn had bounced back and forth between wanting to go and not wanting to go, citing things such as not having anything to wear, to not knowing what to do, to wanting to experience something nice like that for once in her life. It was an ongoing balancing act in her head between doing what she was used to and comfortable with, and doing what she subconsciously thought she might actually enjoy. The latter half of this battle was the one that usually lost, cast aside by logic and cynicism.

There weren't many things in the world that could make her feel flustered--in fact, there were none off the top of her head that she could remotely think of. Most things she either did not take seriously, or she discredited them as not worth her time. But for some reason the boy sitting behind her on the bike and asking her for a reply to the invitation was enough to force her concentration away from the road in pressured search of a response.

"Well yeah, I gave it some thought... and I--"

This, in turn, gave her little time to react to the large, fallen tree branch lying around a sharp curve on the winding mountain road. Her natural reaction was to grip the handles tighter to brace for impact, which only caused the throttle to kick in and surge the bike forward, the front tire crashing directly into the side of the tree. As inertia would have it, the bike came to (somewhat of) a halt while its passengers continued moving forward at the accelerated speed, forcing the girl to yelp in surprise. Making a planned jump from the top of a building was one thing, but flying through the air unexpectedly with no control was another. Her heart raced as she seemed to approach the edge of the mountain cliff in slow motion, her eyes wide in genuine panic from failing to grasp anything nearby to stop the fall. She'd survived falls before, but if she went over the side of that cliff, she knew even she wasn't going to make it.

Would this be the end of our blue-eyed heroine?

Gott dammit, why now?!

Sweet merciful, everything happened way too fast for anything else to happen between point A to point B. They struck a particularly large branch at high speed, the bike crashed and came to a complete halt, tossing its two occupants flying over to the very edge of the cliff. The metal railing didn't help much. Or, well, at least, it didn't stop them from falling off the cliff in the first place. But it was used to stop them from falling to their death.

Looking down, that's one great fall. He definitely did not want to fall from this height, he thought anxiously, gasping for breath as his one hand held tight on the broken metal railing still anchored to the ground, and the other grasping his acquaintances' hand, refusing to let go despite the two combined weight burdening on him, threatening to rip apart his only arm that served as the two's lifeline. And the blood tricking no thanks to the metal railing's razor sharp nature wasn't helping his grip. How can something be sticky and slippery at the same time?

"Geh... well... this doesn't happen everyday..." He said with a somewhat shaky laugh, disabling his ability to sense pain because... well. It hurts. "Oi... you alright down there? I'm fine up here, nothing wrong with me, no broken bones, no concussion, all good," How can you still speak so calmly in such a state? YOU'RE FRIKKIN' HANGING FROM A CLIFF WITH NO WAY TO RECOVER!

You think?

Whuh?

Just before she was about to get a front row seat to a personal viewing of her own life flashing before her eyes, she felt an abrupt tug that snapped her back into reality. It erupted into a sharp burn as she felt the tendons in her arm tearing from the sudden, unexpected pulling of her own body weight on her arm and shoulder. Somehow the shoulder didn't disconnect, and to be honest, the rush of adrenaline she felt from thinking she was seconds away from dying did a lot to minimize any pain.

She clamped her hand onto his wrist and looked up at him, her heart racing and her brain feeling like the slow motion movement just now caught up to normal speed.

"...Am I alright? Oh, I'm great! It's just a bit chilly, if you wouldn't mind TOSSING ME A SWEATER."

So it was rather clear that Robyn was not a happy camper at this point. Dangling thousands of feet in the air above the jagged cliffs below was not her idea of a good time--at least not if she wasn't in control of her own destiny. And in this particular instance, she had to hope that he didn't have one of those cartoon moments of each finger slipping off the guard rail one by one until they both plummetted to their doom with a whistle and a poof of dust.

To help alleviate the physical toll on her body, she threw her other arm up to make sure she had a solid grip on him with both hands which wouldn't last long if he didn't figure something out. Even she was too stressed at this point to make another wisecrack or threat, well-knowing this was serious business. And she wasn't quite sure how he was going to climb up with one arm. Things were looking pretty bleak, and quite frankly, she was going to be pissed if this was how it ended.

Uhuh... yea, enough sarcastic comments, they're in a seriously serious predicament here, it seemed silly to even be talking at the moment. Though they've probably gotten too used to that it seemed strange not to give snide remarks even in this kind of situation. You have a plan? Yes? No?

No?

Bleh. So they're left with no other option than to fall to their death, huh. Quite possibly. Funny how he's living up to her cartoony imagination. There's no way he can hold on. Even if he can though, he doubted she can last for more than a few hours.

Wait, whoever said anything about falling to their death?

Or 'they'?

...What do you plan on doing?

Just watch. "Hold on," He said, tightening his hold on her wrist. And without so much as a word or a breath or a grunt, he just tossed her up. No question, no answer, no dramatic or epic one-liner or whatever. It might be a bit of a shocker to her though. Oh whoops. He lost his grip on the railing.

Sweet.

And hold on, she did. With a quick gasp Robyn suddenly found herself flying through the air, but this time in a direction opposite of her doom. It was by no means a graceful landing, and the thing about vice grips is that they don't let go very easily. He may have lost his handle on the railing, but she didn't lose her hold on him.

Like a rubber ball being pulled back by an elastic string, the stationary point which threw her into the air suddenly became dead weight which pulled her back down. But fortunately, the lower half of her body landed on the road-side of the railing. UNfortunately, her torso smashing into the top of the railing got to be the stopping point to keep the boy from falling into the deep abyss and her from ending up back where she was before. He was just lucky the impact didn't result in her throwing up on him. Gross. Although the punch to her stomach was met with an "OOF," a pain like that was better to endure than to watch him disappear into the craigs below. She quickly ripped off her helmet with her free hand and tossed it to the ground so she could breathe better and get down to work.

Using her other hand to clamp onto his arm and gritting her teeth, she slowly managed to pull him up and over the railing, although the grappling was potentially awkward if they hadn't been in a life-or-death situation. Once he was safely away from the edge of the cliff, she gave a few coughs, her heart still racing from a combination of near-death and heavy lifting. Robyn promptly plopped down on the dirt ground at the edge of the road as if she'd just finished a marathon, resting her back against the guardrail and covering her face with slightly-shaking hands.

"This...is going down...as the single WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE..." and this statement was followed by a slew of other English obscenities as a way for her to vent the rest of her adrenaline, yelling and muffling the frustration into her hands. She could handle getting shot, but falling off a cliff had her rather shaken. After the mini tantrum on the side of the road, the girl let out a sigh, rubbed her face and pushed her hands back through her hair before she was able to somewhat calm down--though getting back to equilibrium might take a few moments.

"When I said 'test drive,' 'crash test' wasn't exactly what I had in mind... pretty sure I owe you an unanticipated apology and...thanks. The outcome probably would've been worse by myself." She stared into the dirt as she spoke, feeling genuine regret for being the cause of nearly getting them both killed, and taking responsibility for something like that was not easy for her. She wasn't going to mope about it, but she also couldn't act like nothing happened. Also, the self-made morphine was wearing off and the pain began to set in, but she was still fully functional by her standards.

As far as she was concerned right then, she was happy to walk the rest of the way down the mountain. And she didn't even want to see what kind of shape her bike was in. Those thoughts aside...

"Are you still as 'fine' as you were earlier?" Come to think of it, was he even conscious?

"Eh, I've had worse," You could have at least put a little bit more feeling into that, you sound like a robot.

Yea, like the whole context of the sentence wasn't emotionless enough. But it's true to an extent. This body had been shot, frozen, drilled through by a drill, stabbed repeatedly by numerous amount of giant icicles till he's been made to resemble Swiss cheese, and it's still walking on the plane of the living as though nothing had happened. Well beyond what he himself would have expected this body could handle. Like it's made of iron or something.

...No, he's not Terminator. V can confirm that.

"You know what's funny about this situation?" He's prepared for a couple of F-bombs in a few moment, because there's definitely nothing funny about this. I mean, who the hell would be laughing at the fact that they had just nearly fallen off to their death? "When time have passed and things have changed, we'll look back around ten or twenty years later, be reminded of this incident and we would say, "Ahah, oh yeah! Remember that time when we nearly fell off the cliff?" And laugh about it." It's strange, how you can laugh about death when you were almost crying about it when you met it a while back. It's a strange way to perceive things.

And that's a strange way to put it. He made it sound like they'll still see each other again for time to come. And partly wishing for it?

Oh please, that can't be it.

The second he mentioned the situation potentially being funny, Robyn was already climbing to her feet and trying to suppress the wave of rage she was going to attempt to not unleash on him. The motorcycle, which had been left behind near the fallen tree, was still rumbling as the ignition had not yet been turned off. Brushing the remnants of the dirt road off the back of her pants, she walked around the tree to see what state her bike was in.

American engineering might've been good, but it wasn't quite good enough to develop unscatheable metal impervious to head-on collisions. She grasped the bike by the handlebars and pulled it back to an upright position before giving it a onceover. The dented front fender was enough to cause the fatal eye twitch that sent the surge of anger from her brain to her hand in incalculable milliseconds, closing her grip around the handle of the weapon in her holster.

Just as the boy finished what Robyn assumed to be some sort of awful joke, she yelled in frustration and promptly blasted the good-sized tree into two very separate pieces.

Someone was having a bad day.

She paused for a minute, then let out a quiet laugh that slowly grew into a near-hysterical fit.

"We're going to have a problem if I'm still on this FORSAKEN ISLAND twenty years from now," she announced with a particular emphasis on the dislike of her current location. It was so like a mountain in Japan to try and kill her. This would've never happened in Europe or the US.

...Wait. What did he say again? Who was he to say they'd even associate with each other that far down the road?

"You. What are you getting at?" she asked with a skeptical and albeit mildly accusatory glance.

Well, no beating around the bush on that one.
