NICE DRIVE!
|
It's that time again, what's everybody watching and how do you feel about some of the new shows? As for me, I actually have a decently sized watch list for once that I actually want to keep up with: Watch List -Persona 4 The Animation: Been waiting for this since it was announced and it does not disappoint. If you liked the game (or any other game in the series) then you pretty much have to watch this. The animation is slick, the music is borrowed right out of the games and the anime even keeps the color and style of the games for the title logo or other elements such as the eye catches. The pacing is really nice for a series that is going to end up being 20-some episodes as well and I feel like at this rate it will be a pretty nice adaptation. It's clearly being made as a love letter to the game and its fans and the feeling is all in the right places. -Gundam AGE: Poor new Gundam and its controversies. Level-5 is involved. It's been hammered for months in advance with accusations about little kid characters and recycling the original Gundam's opening content. Bash me for it all you want, but I love Gundam AGE right out of the gate. Flit is only a year younger than Amuro and still not the youngest Gundam lead ever (that goes to Uso). At the same time, in one episode he manages to be more manly than Amuro, Kira or a whole rut of Gundam protagonists in their early season development. The character designs have a distinct Universal Century feel while the mecha are slick 00-styled stuff; the best of both worlds imo. It's also nice to see the original style colonies return. How the hell did PLANTs work anyways? The UE are an interesting enemy and it's neat to see a set-up where the good guys have had no luck in the span of 14 years developing anything at all effective against them until the Gundam. I think it really synergises with the motif of Gundams as a savior for the people. It'll be interesting to see how the AGE system grows and how they use that technology to close the gap in fighting strength. I was also rather pleased to see that the UE blew up their own comrade to avoid the heroes recovering the suit and being able to study the technology or reverse engineer anything. See, there's a precedent for it now and everybody on Ash Like Snow should have never bitched about me making the Villain NPC's use the same tactic. Also dat opening tune is great <3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tafZbWcmTDQ To Tomorrow: A Gundam RPG anyone? -Hunter X Hunter (reboot): Classic shonen JUMP awesome. it's faster paced than the old anime series, but I actually prefer it this way. I always felt like the old anime dragged along very slowly; especially starting out. The animation is slick and it's great to have an old school series like this re-animated. Also props for having the ending theme done by Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. -Ben-to: High school Comedy/FIGHTAN anime where the kids have special techniques and powers for no real reason at all and are at war over who gets to purchase bento boxes that are marked down half-price at the end of the day. It sounds stupid, but it works surprisingly well because they play it off so hilariously. The lead is great and not as wimpy as the typical lead you'd expect for this type of show and brings a lot of comedy himself with his impersonations of other people. He has a logical reason for trying to be cheap (too poor to afford fixing his own meals properly) and twice gets caught up in the fight just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, by the third it's down to the principle of the matter and he wants to obtain them regardless. It will either be pointlessly stupid to you or ridiculously awesome; I fall into the latter <3 -Phi-Brain: Yu-Gi-Oh - Card Games + Puzzles = Pretty awesome actually. There really are a lot of similarities to be drawn to YGO, but it's still a fun show. The lead gets some mythological themed artifact which lets him be awesome at puzzle solving in a world where puzzle solving is the most important thing to everything (much like Children's Card Games in YGO). Since Puzzles can encompass a broad category it actually has some good potential to me and it reminds me a lot of the early portions of YGO (original manga arc/Season 0) when they played a variety of games. -Fate/Zero: Haven't actually spent the time to watch this yet due to the first episode being double-length, but it's Fate/Zero... what else needs to be said about it? Terrible Things I Wasted Time Sampling -Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere: High school battle anime with a mix of super powers that screams Hyakuji.... wrapped up in a shell of confusion. The first episode crams a pointless chase scene meant to display everyone's powers between two giant info dumps that happen so fast you'll need to rewatch them to even dissect what has been discussed let alone realize that they didn't give you enough info to understand everything. It's a future show, but also fantasy past, but also high school FIGHTAN, but also they have the LOLOLOL lead that plays ero games in this Future-Past where there's a tight geo-political situation going on and he's their leader because he is inept and WTF IS THIS!? I also have to slight this show about its fanservice. I don't mind a little fanservice. I'll even overlook a lot of it if the story is cool and worth my time. All those shows that are only fanservice for fanservice sake and air edited to pump bluray sales are ridiculous imo and for whatever reason this show is cashing on that. The fanservice really isn't over the top yet they still felt the need to edit it. All through the episode you have girls in highly fetishized outfits with uber-sized breasts and a little jiggle SFX running around after their teacher and none of it gets edited at all. Then the inept lead gropes their teacher (who has a rather normal looking appearance compared to the students) and they slap a giant white sphere over the act. Really? Why? Countless animes before have shown groping, especially fully clothed, both before and after this edits > bluray stuff went on. Why edit that bit and none of the other more extreme things up to that point? This is totally just a grab to push the bluray sales. More proof about how much of a waste this show is. -Maji-something Samurai Girls: It's ANOTHER high school FIGHTAN anime that is basically BakaTest but replacing the video game references with Sengoku Era Samurai stuff. Fanservice-y BS based on an eroge game that is edited all to hell to drive bluray sales. Ikki Tousen already essentially does what it does, but with better fight scenes. Nothing to see here. -Mirai Nikki: It wants to be Death Note meets Steins;Gate so badly... so so badly. I know the manga has a popular following and I've never read it so I can't compare, but meh. It has that whole grimdark for grimdark's sake written all over it and I honestly couldn't get interested in what was going on. ==== I'm still waiting to check out Un-Go (aka alt universe Jameson and Hiro as normal detectives). I sampled the first episode of Cubed X Cursed X Curious, but I'm honestly not sure where to place it. It started out boring as all get out but then got hilariously funny and then quickly shot back to being boring... |

Kimi to Boku: PASS Boring. So fucking dull. People talk. A lot. About nothing. Fate Zero: Watch it A show about wizards that fight dangerous battles for the holy grail. It's smart, cool, dramatic, and interesting. Watch it. Chihayafuru: PASS Girl plays a japanese game. It's dull. Mirai Nikki: Up To You it's mediocre. Neither good nor bad. If you like the manga try the show. If you're bored try the show. I didn't dig it but i can see the appeal. Mobile Suit Gundam AGE : Watch It (If oyu like mecha shows) If you like gundam you will like this. The end. PS: Holy shit, a kind female lead and a male protag that wants to fight without being an emo assassin? These may be the most likable gundam characters since G Gundam. Tamayura: Hitotose: PASS You four-girls-are-friends anime for this season. So.. yeah. If you like those then here ya' go Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle: Up To You I didn't like it but i didn't hate it. Give it a shot. Persona 4: Up To You. First episode was a little awkward. Dull at first and the fight wasn't great. Still, it's dark and treats you like a fucking adult. So that gives it giga points. Worth watching just to see if you dig it. MY WATCH LIST: GUNDAM AGE PERSONA 4 FATE ZERO |

Gundam Age is probably the first Gundam show I had to three episode test on, the first episode was...just mediocre to me since it all seemed so predictable. Flit gets points at least for trying to pass off the Gundam to an experienced pilot but thats about it. Not digging this whole child genius thing really. Plus the setting makes everyone look hilariously incompetent. 14 years and the UE has accomplished nothing but harass colonies, 14 years and no one knows what they are and they -still- let transports fly without escort, 14 years and only a bloody kid found out how their attack patterns work? I dunno, maybe a few more episodes will pull me in but it really started off on a meh note. Fate/Zero and Persona 4 have proven that good adaptations of lengthy source material can still be done right. Though the way they are paced can leave you with that annoying "I want more" feel. Ben-To gets you in via shock factor and it...actually works all things considered. Somehow the premise at least gets you to watch it though I'm in it for the three episode test, partly because its going to be 12 episodes, and given the character roster and the setting, well, lets see how long it takes before the usual flare shows up. Majikoi I am watching purely because its in the same universe as They Are My Noble Masters, I liked that series and kinda hope this does the same. Maken-ki: Dropped three minutes. Perverted boy goes to school that was recently turned co-ed. School also has zomg powers but the fights aren't even interesting when I skipped ahead. Tamayura: One of those things I'm watching because its...well, a feel good show. I liked the OVA and I like photography in general. This is one of those things that made me feel like I was napping, but in a good way. C^Cubed: First episode was hilarious, second ep had sudden change in tone in its entirely. Another I'm watching because I need to see what the hell is going on properly. Mirai Nikki: read a few chapters of the manga, and i liked it though it fell through for me due to lol translations at the time. Pleasantly surprised with the anime and well, approving thus far. Gonna call in on this one, seeing as I've been in dire need of some new anime material (Even though I still need the time to bloody well watch Star Driver >>) Persona 4, as a game, I sadly never played. =( But I'm a sucker for the art style =D So I'll definately give it a watch. ^^ Gundam AGE. To Tomorrow: A Gundam RPG? I say to this: DOUBLE FREAKING THUMBS UP =D LET'S BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD MARTIAN DAYS WHILE WATCHING A SPIFFY NEW GUNDAM! =D Also, although it's not out yet, I just figurd I'd give it a mention if some people haven't heard yet: Shakugan no Shana III Final Edited by Nickle, Oct 11 2011, 12:29 AM.

Watch List and reasons: C3, the Op's nice, it's sung by Nanoha. And the girls are cute, and they can fight. Majikoi: The girls are Cute, and they can fight. Also, the guys are weaker then the girls, which makes it great. Also, it's funny. Maken-ki: The girls are Cute, and they can fight. Ben-To: The girls are Cute, and they can fight. Fate/Zero, Saber's cute, and she can fight. Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere: The girls are cute, and they can fight. Mashiroiro Symphony: No fighting, but the girls are cute. Ika Musume S2: The girls are cute. And it's funny. Working S2: The girls are cute, and it's funny. Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai: The girls are cute, and it's funny. Hitotose: The girls are cute. Morita-san wa Mukuchi S2: The girls are cute, and it's funny. Edited by Kounoko, Oct 11 2011, 02:22 AM.

The Middleman (stubborn, yet relaxed)
|
I wasn't aware Ben-to had powers involved, but it was rather amusing to see a Keitaro- like character get beat up, revive himself, and try to do the same thing three times in one episode. Shana's pretty great, a tale woven of two girls pwning for the boy who's technically dead, and currently 'acts' dead. Only for him to grow a ponytail and slick his hair back, betraying them both. I blame the maid for this turn of events, but what can one do? Ika Musume S2....watched a few minutes of the dub, hope it doesn't have a lot of puns. Still, very funny none the less, and has a lot more interaction between other characters. |

What
|
Currently watching P4, Shana 3, Fate/Zero, and Majikoi (my guilty pleasure of the season). Horizon is a bit iffy. Doesn't make any sense, and not even the people who've read the novels could put it into words I could understand. I want to see how it turns out, but I believe that even the subbers dropped it. I don't really have much motivation to watch Mirai Nikki, since I've read the manga and I already know the trainwreck that's gonna come. Still eagerly waiting for Guilty Crown and Last Exile 2. Should probably get around to giving Gundam AGE a try. Edited by SpoonofEvil, Oct 11 2011, 01:59 AM.

Beware The Penguin Emperor
|
What am I watching hmmm Mirai Nikki: The adaptation could have gone better, however; I am around halfway through the manga, and as such, I'll watch this one simply because the plot is worth it. Persona 4: I simply loved the first episode, it introduced the main characters without losing its rythm even for a second. And for a pleasant surprise, it kept the animation and opening from the game. Boku wa Tomodachi: the basic cub premise seems to take a lot from the Haruhi series. But still, I was looking for some simple-stupid harem to pass my time with; and I think I may have found it. Horizon: I had my hopes set quite high for this one when I read the initial synopsis given to us before its release. To my dissapointment, the first episode was a blatant clone of the first episode from Tiger & Bunny(an anime which I personally didn't like a lot). With every character demonstrating their skills against a single opponent. Lastly, the amount of gratuitous fanservice that this show is flirting with simply backs me off from watching it. Fate Zero: I actually like this a lot. The first episode attempts to introduce everything that Fate Stay Night had an entire series to explain in only 45 minutes; and although it limited the amount of action we got from it, this single episode allows me to recommend it to anyone; regardless of wether you have seen Fate/Stay Night or not. The second episode picks up on its rythm in a beautiful way, special mention goes to the introduction of a character (I won't spoil for those who are yet to see it) it will leave a huge impression on you I'm sure of it. As for the others I have yet to watch them, but I'll post my impressions as soon as I do

One does not simply eat one packet of mee goreng
|
Ben-To: The first six seconds got me hooked. +____+ Tons of lol factors thanks to everyone going SRSBIZ over some mundane thing (in this case bento), which doesn't lead to a facepalm for once, mainly because the main core of it all was for lolz. Hilarious lines, likable casts, sweet animation and art style, PLUS THE ENDING CREDIT SCENE +____+ GO WATCH IT. Of course, this is just the first episode, but hey, who says men can't be hopeful? Persona 4: So I can see they're staying true to the game from the art style, the story line, the moozaks, hilarities, and the creepy factor, IT HAS TO. +_____________+ Horizon: ... Enh... while I do like the idea of a futuristic fantasy magitech genre... this series just ruins it. They talk too much during the first half of the episode to fill you in with what seemed to be a complicated setting of the entire series, took a break to show some of the casts showing off their skills, then MOAR INFODUMP-TALKING. It's like a three episodes worth of information being crammed into a 20 minutes dialogues dialogues and moar dialogues. AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO THE MAIN CORE PLOT OF THE STORY. That is, until the CREDIT SCENE. And the main protagonist doesn't show up till like, the last few minutes of the episode, and when he does show up... *BDSLKJFEIOHLKJASD* ... What do you think of an otaku pervert who, er... blatantly fondles women's breasts and shows off his eroge obsession in public... for the main protagonist? BUT WORST OF ALL HE'S SUCH A WOOBIE WHY DOES SOMEONE LIKE HIM HAS TO BE SUCH A WOOBIE ~~~~~ Anyway that's all for now. Ciao~ Edited by Fin, Oct 11 2011, 08:59 PM.

PhiBrain - Good. I like the premise. Super puzzle man is a lot of fun. I'm glad I'm watching on my computer. I keep pausing to try and solve the puzzles.(not doing too poorly at that so far, but I'm sure they'll throw in some more impossible ones later) Chihayafuru - I like shows about games. Also, coming from the comic I was somewhat annoyed when they didn't start with the elementary school part, but they flashed back to it, so it's probably just for better pacing.(And not throwing people off when it stops being about elementary students and switches to high school) Gundam AGE - GUNDAM!!! I don't care if it is about some kid. It's got Gundam-be on its side. I like the characters. Bento - Okay. really now... What is this? I don't know. I'll keep watching it, until I decide it's too stupid to keep my attention. Because it's also way cool. And Hunter x Hunter. Well, it's always good. Even the Chimera Ant arc that will no doubt last until the end of time. I look forward to watching the new animation. |

What
|
Ok, upon watching the second episode of Horizon, I'm upgrading from "Wtf am I watching" to "cautiously optimistic". IMO it the second episode seemed to be a much larger improvement over the first since it was better paced and actually did a good job of explaining wtf was going on. |
