The Book that is Hyakuji's Story has come to a close. However, there are still plenty of stories left to be told in the madcap Anime Universe it inhabits. Hello all I am requesting assistance, I need some legit sources on Japanese culture for my Parents as Partner's class. Me and my group will be teaching fellow wanna-be teachers on how to act should a child from a Japanese family be part of our classroom. Of course I'm not talking about an Americanized Family who originates from Japan but a Family consisting of parents who have immigrated From Japan to the United States. The ultimate goal is to not be ignorant and not offend the crap out of the Japaense child's parents. Specifically it is my job to cover Countries from which the families originate and languages spoken (that part is kinda obvious) and Body language, non-verbals, greetings, etc. that may be typical of the culture or may be offensive in the culture. (this part not so obvious and obviously very important) Any and all help is deeeeeeply appreciated! Thank you very much! Edited by Namida, Sep 20 2011, 08:35 AM.

gonna need more specifics (japanese etiquette is a very, very broad deal, covering bathing, eating, gift giving and the like) but I'll toss in what I've learned from class in regards to how one should act and speak. First of all, one of the nuances of Japanese language is that one must not be direct to the point, beating around the bush is actually polite while they consider being blunt quite rude, in both parties. Since this is a school setting here's a simple example... The student finishes a test and therefore is allowed to leave. However, the student does not actually state his intent to leave. He will approach the teacher and merely state that he's finished...and wait until the teacher dismisses him. In the home setting we'll use the example of it being too hot in the room and there being an intent to turn on the air conditioning. In this case the guest will only mention that its hot and not ask for the device to be turned on, and wait for the home owner to do so. Greetings is also a complicated affair with bowing, but basic etiquette for hellos and what not is basically required they be firm but not overly energetic (elementary students get admonished for being too hyper greeting people). Further its common that goodbye isn't used but instead a wish to see you again is given. I can call my Japanese prof if need be for more, but I'm going to need a detailed outline because there's a lot more to etiquette than meets they eye. |

Mostly looking at etiquette that would be useful when interacting with the Japanese parents. Greetings, how to approach topics on the child's performance in the classroom, encouragement to participate in school activities and important things to know should you make a home visit. Also it would be good to note what sort of things are just plain rude in the Japanese culture. but thank you so much for your help I really do appreciate it. Edited by Namida, Sep 20 2011, 04:00 PM.
