Hyakuji-Shi.

A city of adventure and action, of mystery and intrigue, of excitement and thrilling experiences.

And, of course, a city of death.

A city so full of the supernatural, so full of the strange and weird was bound to have death, and lots of it. After all, when you concentrate a large number of metahumans, mages, the odd robot, and, of course, evil organizations bent on destroying the world, you got a lot of bloodshed, some of it deserving, some of it not.

Death, however, is a harsh mistress, and doesn’t care if you’re deserving of your fate or not. Everybody dies. That’s how it works. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

And where you get death, you get Reapers.

Reapers. Nobody knows where they came from, but everybody knows why they came: To provide passage to the afterlife, and to comfort the newly dead. Some say that they’re dead humans, resurrected for the purpose of helping their fellow man walk to the afterlife as penance for their sins, before finally being cleared and joining their brethren in the World that is Yet to Come. Others argue that they’re minor gods; gods who don’t demand worship, but instead, respect. Some belief that they’re angels, sent from The High One to guide mankind to their just deserts.

And some believe that you shouldn’t question the way the world works, and merely let it carry about its business.

They’re curious beings, beings who don’t quite understand humanity and seem to have no pasts, beings who merely carry on with their business like clockwork, never stopping for humanity, never truly caring.

Of course, you always get your odd apple.

Whisper wasn’t, strictly speaking, a bad Reaper. To the contrary, he got his job done efficiently and effectively, and had always been good at grief-counseling the recently departed souls he had to collect. It was just that…well, he cared just a bit too much. He wasn’t, in the unspoken opinion of his contemporaries, quite tough enough to be a Reaper. He always became moody after Reaping children, and at times it seemed that the job honestly depressed him. Most of his fellow Reapers felt a bit bad after they saw the mutilated corpses of dead children as well, but not to the extent he went to, and they generally got over it after a beer or two.

Whisper was…different, to say the least.

The boy was odd, even by a Reaper’s standards. Prone to odd mood swings and the occasional act of mindless violence, he was at the same time without a doubt the most down to earth and amiable Reaper, which admittedly wasn’t saying much. It’s worth mentioning that Reapers are always a bit off—hell, it’s considered a job requirement by some circles—but Whisper took the cake when it came to just plane weirdness.

This was more than evident by his entrance into Hyakuji. Dressed in his usual ensemble, he walked through the gates, standing erect and with an air of unwavering politeness as he moved towards the main building, his stride small but fast as he moved, broom tied to his back claymore style. His soulless eyes turned to look at the students around him, and he gave them all encouraging smiles as he walked. A few of the those who could see Auras—the psychically inclined, Magi, et cetera—gave him a second glance as they walked past him, and did double takes once they confirmed what they had absentmindedly perceived.

He had no Aura. No soul. No essence.

And a few of the Magi recognized him.

One such Magi walked toward him, shaking slightly as he did so. It wasn’t every day you got a death on the campus. Strictly speaking, he wasn’t scared of Whisper himself—it was hard to be scared of Whisper, who was typically about as intimidating as a small damp kitten—but his presence was an undeniable and one hundred percent accurate omen, and not the good kind.

The Magi cleared his throat, and spoke to Whisper with an air of discomfort. “Who…who are you here for?”

Whisper simply smiled, and simply said, quite quietly, “Technically, I am here at this school for the Principal.”

There was an overwhelming silence.

“But not for the reason you’re thinking of. I have an appointment with her. I’m joining the school.”

The silence that followed was broken by a bird of some kind that was completely unaware of the dramatic situation that was happening a few yards away, and had chosen to chirp cheerfully as it nonchalantly choked the chilled air. Suddenly, a voice broke the imaginary silence.

“Wait, what?”

A confused look covered Whisper’s face. “Er, I’m joining…the school?”

“…You’re a Reaper.”

“Correct.”

“…And you’re joining our school.”

“Correct.”

“…Might I ask why?”

Whisper’s face broke out into a look of determination and excitement. “I wish to partake in the noblest quest for enlightenment. To march towards the future, never looking back, as I expunge the ignorance from my soul and mind whilst I move forward, reaching the very boundaries of all that is known and beyond. To discover, not just of mere facts and words, but of the very fundamental truths that fill our world. I seek enlightenment and understanding, to illuminate the darkness that fills my mind, to realize myself an adversary of my own faults, to surmount all my weaknesses and limitations through the minds and blood of my antecedents in this odyssey towards meaning. And once I attain this herculean task…then I will use all of my gained power to abolish all afflictions; stop all suffering; halt all hypocrisy; end all evil. And then…I shall rest, having completed the task that lies within all of our hearts; that rages within all our souls. I shall rest for all eternity, having created a society with no need for my kind, for our services; our slavery; our tzedakah. That…that is my esprit de corps. To create a world with no boundary between life and death, earth and heaven.”

Silence.

“…You mean you want to learn so you can help the world, and stuff?”

Whisper sagged a bit.

“Um…yes, I suppose.”

Silence.

“…Well, good luck with that.”

Whisper smiled, standing tall once more, and bowed to the Magi. “Gramercy. I am grateful for your kind blessing. May you live in interesting times, kind one.”

He walked through the silence, cheerfully making his way towards the main building.

✍(⊙︿⊙ ; ) ….. nope.
The school looked as though it had seen better days just from the state of the nature-strip alone. But before Whisper could step through the door to the Main Building and Administration Office, it clicked open, and an orange haired girl skipped out. She stopped, instantly turning towards him and without batting a perfectly mascara'd lash she asked cheerfully,

"hehe. Here hold this, will yaa..?" Holding out a small shoebox in both her hands towards him.

He seemed like a perfectly normal kid to her. Although the word 'normal' really was relative in a place like this. For instance, she could say he was perfectly normal because she could see he didn't tuck his pants into his socks, but he probably wouldn't say the same for her, seeing as she had a sprout growing out of her head.

Still, she didn't seem bothered by the huge seedling in the least, shaking the box in her hands once just to remind him it was still there. It made a sickening dull flat noise, the kind that only a dead body could make. And in actual fact, there was one in there! Although Fuu didn't really want to draw attention to that...

The school girl just grinned and hoped he would take it off her hands for a moment so she could do her hair.
