Shocking
Alice had spent her whole 'first day' in Hyakuji wandering the town, learning what was where. Her blue eyes were glazed slightly, her mouth set in a thin line. Mostly what she had expected, not much out of the ordinary.

She made a few mental notes and found herself gravitating toward a coffee shop.

She didn't wear heels anymore, they hurt her feet, but the flats she wore were very comfortable! A good purchase indeed... Alice swept her hair behind her shoulder as she smiled softly to herself, an internal joke. But the smile remained on her face, growing in size as she pleasantly addressed the cashier, placing her order. Her hair drifted around her as if it had a mind of its own, reaching down to almost the hem of her skirt.

Her time in Hyakuji would be pleasant, she was sure of it.

Kusanagi Kiryu sat nonchalantly alone at one of the tables within the coffee shop. The cup he had ordered sat upon the table steaming as he held his hat against his stomach with one hand and a cellphone in the other currently raised to his ear. I was only customary to take off your hat at the dinner table or within a restaurant like this place. The mall was a good target for sources of Life Force, but more importantly it was an easy locale to blend in for his line of work and act unnoticed by most.

"Nah," he spoke cheerfully to the person he was speaking to on the phone, "What? You can't find the manifest to verify the shipment? Aiyaa, you guys really get lost without me huh? Keep looking. I'll be in later to clean up the mess if you can't find it. No, it's fine really. Alright." Clicking off his cellphone he placed it inside his suit jacket and then let his hand rest gently on the arm of the chair he was in.

One of the first tasks he had been given by The World, for the time being, was to oversee the small gangs they had been taking in. All in all, it was really pretty simple. It seemed like not that long ago there was some other group that had all the gangs under their thumbs. Kusanagi hadn't pieced together every last detail but to the best of his knowledge they had been arrogant and flaunted their success and this drew the ire of everyone with any sense of justice at all. He wouldn't make that same mistake; at least if he had any say in things. There were plenty of ways to skirt the law and amass wealth while avoiding painting a giant target on yourself.

Slowly, his eyes darted around the coffee shop. Any person he happened to match gaze with, he gave them a friendly smile and head nod before continuing his survey. People watching wasn't really something he particularly enjoyed, but he still had much to learn about this city; his new playground in a sense. The workers of this particular coffee shop in the mall had already gotten use to his presence. They had already written him off as a business man who enjoyed the quiet atmosphere of the joint for his lunch break. Everything was going just perfect.

Alice picked up her drink with a smile and a nod, surveying her surroundings for somewhere quiet and out of the way to sit. The shop was full of all the normal sorts of people, teenagers gossiping in small circles, business men and women chatting away on their cell phones, old couples spending time together...

Her eyes fell on a man with green hair, their eyes locked and she returned his smile, but her gaze lingered.

'Mmmm...? What do we have here?'

He felt... wrong. He didn't quite belong here and he made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Most people would run but Alice was so intrigued she didn't realize how long she was staring at the man. Blinking rapidly she turned and paced to an open table in view of the man and sat down.

That urge to study him and learn exactly what makes him tick sprang up again. Alice tried to be nonchalant as she sipped her coffee, staring down at the table in front of her as if she were reading, but she was sure he had noticed. Well, she hoped so. The most interesting people were always very aware of their surroundings.

Not that a tall woman staring at you stupidly from across the room was a very hard thing to miss.

A flood of new students entered the coffee shop and suddenly the quaint little locale was bustling with noise and conversation. It was the type of atmosphere where most struggled on their own conversations and let anything else get lost in the murmur of background noise. It was right on time like usual, from Kusanagi's observations, and this meant he could finally deal with the current situation.

For whatever reason, one particular woman in the coffee shop couldn't stop staring at him. Did she realize he wasn't a business man? But he had done nothing to blow his cover identity. Chances were it was probably nothing, but Tarot was very close to making its first big step; he couldn't risk anything.

"Ah, Miss, excuse me," Kusanagi addressed the staring woman directly with the roar of conversation causing most people to ignore his words, "I'm a little afraid, you see. If you keep staring like that you might drill a hole through me~" Even if he hadn't stated it explicitly it was every bit of an invitation to come join him. Yes, she would be sitting at his table long before the students left and the cover was gone.

The bigger question, however, was where to go from there.

Alice straightened when he motioned to her, catching the man's words and gesture on one of her occasional glances up at him. A flush touched her cheeks and she timidly tucked her hair behind her ear and stood up - her table instantly over flowing with students. For a moment, she glowered at them, her soft features twisting and hardening, but as quickly as it was there it was gone.

The woman paced over to the green haired man's table and hovered there, awkwardly shifting from foot to foot. "Ah," she spoke softly, her voice barely rising above the rumble of the crowd, but they were close... it wouldn't be too hard to hear. "I'm sorry for staring so much, sir. You just... feel like you don't belong here." Her eyes sparkled and she leaned forward, curiosity and want in her gaze.

Alice's voice lowered and her hair spilled over her shoulder, almost creating a veil between her and the crowed. Her head tilted and she seemed to be searching his face now as she spoke, analyzing him. "Are you... one of them? Are you one of the students from the school here? I'm sorry for being so pushy but... I'm a bit obsessed with the students of this school. They're... part of my research." The corner of her mouth twitched up in a bit of a smile and for a moment that hardness settled in her eyes.

Distant and almost dead, as if that prior sparkle had been locked away.

"My my," Kusanagi whistled in shock as the woman began to speak to him, "You can't seriously think I look like a student do you? I dunno if that's supposed to be a pick up line or what, but maybe you should get your eyes checked; ya know~" This person was way too nosy for their own business. However, Kusanagi felt it was important to keep up his cheerful little act. His mind was working frantically trying to take in a good mental note of what she looked like. Definitely a problem he would want to wipe out in the future to feed the Azure Grimoire.

"But sit down, sit down," Kusanagi continued, "I do research too actually. Why are you studying the students here anyways? They're just regular kids and there's not much to get... they're special... so are lots of people; nothing new there~"

What a waste of time. Was she really researching the students or was it a front for something else? Against his own work it seemed utterly mundane and pathetic. Of course, this didn't surprise him that much. He'd just have to bore through her ramblings until he had an opening to end their conversation and thus quell any suspicions in her mind.

"Well," Alice murmured, pulling out the opposite chair and slipping into it, holding her canvas bag on her lap. "It's hard to tell, isn't it? I'm not implying that you look childishly young, just that... I've seen a few of the students that go here and they very greatly in appearance. Some look like they're thirty, some look like they're ten." Alice ran her finger against the bridge of her nose as if she were pushing up imaginary glasses, and instead scratched the bridge.

"Why am I studying them?" well... that was a question, wasn't it? The truth would be too hard to swallow. "I find them so interesting. The same reason scientists have cut apart octopus to find out how they change color, the same reason they cut off the limbs of reptiles and other such animals to watch them regrow. It's fascinating, isn't it?" Her eyes sparkled and her heart pitter patted in her chest. She was almost sure that she wasn't wrong about him. Something was off about his presence. She understood that. She could relate.

The distant look in her eyes disappeared and she smiled cheerily at him, her fingers laced in her lap. "Tell me about your research? I love talking shop... When someone feels passionately about something it's beautifully to me. Especially when it's knowledge..."

"Does that mean you want to cut the school kids up?" Kusanagi questioned jokingly. It seemed really stupid overall to him. What was interesting? They had abilities and they worked. It had always been that way. The same way Magic had always existed. Though, he supposed if someone wanted to waste their life away on something fruitless he had no right to stop them.

"Oh me?" Kusanagi answered the woman's question, "Ah, it's nothing special really... I guess you could consider me a scholar more than a scientist. I deal with death~" He had said it so plainly and cheerfully that he barely realized the impact stating it so bluntly might have.

"Ah well," Kusanagi quickly added, "Let me clarify...the theory and philosophy of death... you know, not just like people dying. The ending of things... and I guess by extension rebirth too. One end is usually another beginning~"

Alice chuckled as he suggested wanting to cut students up. "Cut them up? Why ever would I want to do that?" Her head cocked and she smiled sweetly to him, but something shuddered just behind her eyes. The woman's gaze drifted back to Kusanagi when he spoke of death and she placed her cheek in her hand, looking at him almost dreamily. Had he seduced her so easily? Or was the mention of death so interesting to her?

It couldn't be, could it?

"Death is likewise fascinating, but a sad end to things I think. Not in the same sense that people regard death as something to fear, but rather that the constant looming fact that we only have a set time to accomplish our goals seems debilitating to me." She sipped at her coffee. "Ideally, I'd like to face that challenge head on, deny death, defy it." Her head cocked and she looked at Kusanagi again, the softness slipping from her face.

"Are you trying the same? Or do you want to kill and create? I'd like to hear more, if you're willing to tell me." She wasn't phased at all. A young girl unbothered by death?

"Aw, but time is an illusion," Kusanagi laughed as he answered the woman's own musing, "Fretting about it so much like that only makes you all the more bound by its chains." It was a pointless conversation but unfortunately one Kusanagi would have to ride out to its inevitable end. He knew she had been watching him specifically. If he had left it up to chance and left the coffee shop there was a chance she might try to follow. Then things would have to escalate one way or another.

"As for me," Kusanagi continued, "I am far more interested in the end and consequential start of things. You are interested in these students and their powers. However, I think that is a far greater power. The ability to end things and as an effect bring about the start of new things. Imagine the power one actually has in that very instance... the choice that begins the cycle of death and rebirth."

Yes, it was just like Tarot. Soon, it would be celebrating a marvelous birth. A birth given rise from the death of the Wo-Shing Society. And he would be there. Thanks to The World he would be able to continue his research at his own leisure. However, what none of them knew was that even the members of Tarot itself would be his subjects.

"Time is an illusion? How so?" She tilted her head, genuinely curious to his views of the world. How could someone so easily brush time away? It was ticking down for everyone... "Races die and are rebuilt, societies... But how is a single death more interesting than an entire life?" She had begun mentally taking notes, becoming more and more interested in this man.

"Your own life will end some day, won't you miss your research? Won't you regret the point in time when you can learn no more?"

"Time only has control over you if you acknowledge it," Kusanagi said bluntly with a hint of annoyance in his voice. If it weren't for the crowd of people, the fact they were in a public location, then the Azure Grimoire would have already activated and begun draining another life.

"If that is the case then I won't be around to regret it," Kusanagi laughed slightly, "Only a fool would fear death. There is nothing more delightful than knowing you have gained control over it. If I haven't completed my research when my number is up then I deserve to die. The way forward should be set for others that could succeed me in my failures. Wouldn't you agree with that?"

Soon, his contact would call again. It was always on schedule every day at certain intervals. He only had to continue this farce and hold back his emotions until that point. He could use the call as an excuse to slip out and, if needed, lose her in the crowds of the mall. Slowly, it seemed as if the woman had become even more interested; too interested for her own good.

Alice laughed and covered her mouth, turning away from him slightly. She almost spit out her coffee. After calming herself, the girl shook her head and scoffed. "Time controls you if you want it to or not. Ignoring the passing of a day, week, month, or year doesn't make it not pass. We are all controlled by time, limited by it."

She had been so hopeful for him, someone else that was as driven as she. Who knew such an interesting seeming man would hold views at such an opposite of her own? Disappointing...

"I suppose so," She tucked her hair behind her ear. "I'd rather complete my work myself though, lest someone ruin something with my name on it." He seemed irritated and bored, and she was growing to feel much of the same. There was more there she was sure, but he didn't seem to want to share with her. "I seem to be bothering you though," The girl smiled and swallowed down the rest of her coffee, cocking her head a little after.

"Will you tell me why you seem so busy?" Her eyebrow arched. "Busy and dismissive... Better things to do? People to kill?"

"That's a little rude isn't it?" Kusanagi questioned unable to hide the annoyance in his voice, "I enjoy researching the philosophy and ideals of something that happens to be a little morbid so that makes me a killer? You're researching school kids. What does that make you, Miss? A pedophile?" Harsh words, but he wanted to make just as harsh a jump from her own words as she had done from his. It was decided now. He would kill her; at some point. It probably wouldn't be today and it probably wouldn't be tomorrow; but some day.

"I seem busy because it is very hard to step in, newly hired, to a company with rather rocky footing and start trying to manage something that has been poorly managed for a long time," Kusanagi went on to explain in a dry tone, "Have you ever tried running a company that's not your own and you've only stepped in and had everything dumped on you?"

It wouldn't be long now at all. Even if things were turning south there was still zero reason to suspect anything about him beyond the ordinary. Finally playing his trump card and liberally adjusting his work for Tarot to resemble working at a legit business would close off any hope of digging in further.

Alice blinked rapidly. She hadn't been expecting that kind of reaction at all... Couldn't he take a joke? The woman shook her head slowly and wove her arms a bit in the air. "No no no, I didn't mean to insult you... it was just a joke..." She trailed off though when he questioned her management skills...

The truth was, she had been elbow deep in a shit storm of a mess with a certain organization and sadly no amount of manipulation got the stubborn leader to do what she wanted... Idly, Alice wondered where the green eyed boy had gone.

Her brow wrinkled. "I'd love to tell you if I have or have not been in a similar situation as you but you see, I don't remember much of my life, actually..." She frowned and scratched her cheek, looking away as if embarrassed. "I'm not entirely sure if my name is my name, to be honest with you." She shook her head though and shrugged.

"I'm sorry for bothering you though, Sir. I just thought you seemed like an interesting individual to talk to. I'm sorry I wasted your time."
