The entrance to the roof top led people out to face the west side of the school. From this viewpoint, all the students playing sport outside or swapping lunches under a tree in the beautiful spring weather looked like small figurines in a tiny model world. It was not hard to see it as a meticulously built miniature replica of the athletic field of Hyakuji High if it were not for the faint sounds of school kids playing, birds circling the afternoon sky, and wind howling through the buildings resonating all throughout the rooftop... and then suddenly... laughing.

"huu....hu hu hu..."

There was a number of structures on the roof that could have made it hard to spot where the redundant noise was coming from at first. But behind the corner of a tower was the hem of a navy blue skirt and someone's bottom sticking out like they were crouching behind it. Like maybe... they were hiding from something.

But then when all the other sounds had died down, the laughing quickly started to sound more like sobbing. And out of no where with seemingly nothing done to provoke it, it turned into ridiculous wailing,

"Hu-eeeeeeeeehhh!!! Hu huaaa..."

"huu....hu hu hu..."

At the lakeside pavilion...

"What is that noise?" Selene wondered as she set down the book she was reading. The sound was too obvious to not go unnoticed, as engrossed in her reading as the English heiress may be. It wasn't just the wind, that she was certain - as far as she could tell it sounded like laughter. Straining her ears, the corporate heiress attempted to track the direction from whence it came... without any success. With the school grounds being as expansive as they are, it could have come from anywhere.

But one thing was for certain - for it to be heard (presumably) all over the campus the voice must've come from a high place, and that would mean the rooftops.

"Hu-eeeeeeeeehhh!!! Hu huaaa..."

And so it began again, what started out as laughter quickly sounded more like sobbing now, before turning into a full-blown wailing. In order to track the source of the voice, Selene knew she would have to take to the skies. Tucking her books into her school bag, the corporate heiress slung her bag over her shoulder before retrieving her ritual dagger, drawing a trickle of blood from her right hand.

Completing a glowing circle of runes, Selene stepped back as the runes flared up and formed into a completed spell circle of interlacing circles and geometric symbols, a column of light erupting from the center as a portal to an alternate plane of existence was opened, bringing forth a Wyvern, announcing its arrival with a bellowing roar and flapping of wings.

"Let's go, Wyvern," Selene said as she walked over the her summoned dragon companion, who crouched down onto its belly as the corporate heiress neared. Stroking the creature's shiny scales, Selene climbed onto the Wyvern's back before pointing to the sky. With a soft growl, the Wyvern flapped its powerful wings as it began to climb skywards with Selene on its back, taking the corporate heiress' attempt to hunt down the source of the mysterious voice into the air.

The sobbing had gotten significantly softer as she calmed down. By now she was sniffling away and she squatted behind the small tower.

If a girl could be heard crying on the roof from the pavilion, then you'd have to be hearing-impaired not be able to hear a DRAGON being summoned from the pavilion to the roof. Unfortunately for the magical practitioner, this damsel in particular was very capable of a thing called selective hearing. So both Selene and her Wyvern literally went right over her head.

Star rubbed at her eyes, walking through the school grounds with her lunch in her hand. She had finally gotten to sleep at around three in the morning yesterday, thanks to her bright idea to read ghost stories before bed. And wow did Asia have some seriously creepy ghost stories. She had ended up finding a night light to turn on, which was really stupid considering she was a photomancer that controlled light. That wouldn't have been so bad if she didn't wake up with the dawn like she always did.

"Coffee..." she muttered to herself, taking another sip of the cup of coffee in her hand. She had been caffeinating herself since this morning. Once the caffeine finally kicked in, she was bound to be insanely hyper. At the moment, though, she was still falling asleep.

Star jumped when she heard a loud wail echo throughout the school, the lid of her cup popping off and coffee spilling all over her hand as the hair on her neck stood on end, her eyes widening. Was it the headless ghost girl from page 153 come back to haunt her?!? Star let out an 'eep' and hid behind a tree as a dragon started to roar. The headless ghost girl must have been summoning her minions of the undead!

...Wait a second...headless ghosts couldn't cry...

Star blinked, peeking out from behind the tree and looking up as she saw Selene's wyvern fly overhead. Of course! Selene. So the crying must have come from...

A thought bubble appeared in Star's sleep-deprived brain, a tiny image of Selene popping into it, followed by a plus sign, and the image of someone crying.

Selene + crying = ?

Well, whatever it was, Star was about to find out, so long as it didn't involve ghost girls. She made her way towards the rooftop of the school, where the voice was likely to be coming from.

I apologize for the brevity of this reply

And once again, all was quiet as the wailing stopped. Or perhaps, she couldn't hear properly above the sound of the Wyvern's wing beats as the corporate heiress scanned the rooftops from her elevated position on the back of her mount. Instead of flapping at a fixed pace, her Wyvern now opted instead to glide, making circling rounds overhead as the corporate heiress kept her eyes and ears open, trying to listen for any unusual crying or laughing.

Some time would pass as the dragon circled overhead, without so little as the gentle hum of the breeze in their ears. They could have easily given up and gone back to the pavilion in that long event-less pause, but soon enough Selene's intense focus would pay off as a loud howl rang throughout the rooftop again.

"Hooooooo!!!! Ho huuu nuuu..." The mysterious voice sounded almost like they were being tortured now.

It came from behind one of the tall structures on the roof. With so many of these towers on the rooftop, all at varying heights, it was hard to spot anything standing let alone anyone who might have been crouching there. There were parts of the roof that were clear and unobstructed though. Such as the area where one entrance to the rooftop lead out to, and incidentally the door was always unlocked.

As soon as the girl with the coffee in her hand burst through the door to find the source of all this noise, Selene would be able to spot Star immediately. The elemancer had the advantage in terms of view point, because behind the concrete structure that was directly opposite to the entrance she would be able to very easily spot the a hem of a skirt, and the half exposed bottom of a girl, quivering behind that wall.

Star looked around from the rooftop for the source of the crying, looking up to watch as Selene's wyvern passed overhead. She had a pretty good idea what the British student was looking for, and if Star's mind was working right and wasn't completely deluded by a surplus of caffeine and a deficiency of sleep, Selene probably couldn't see the roof very well from where she was flying. Or at least, she couldn't look in all the nooks and crannies.

Star, however, had a perfect view of the roof. And, in this case, one of its occupants. Or...part of her anyway. The photomancer frowned, her eyes landing on what appeared to be a semi-exposed rear end.

...Hmm...loud crying? A tendency to show off underwear? Could it be...?

Star walked slowly up to the crying girl so as not to startle her. As she walked, she raised her hand. The sunlight glinting off the gold bracelet around her right arm suddenly intensified, flashing gold light about three times--a signal to Selene. She lowered her hand, peeking around the corner slowly.

"Excuse me...?" she asked. "Is everything alright?"

A flash of golden light coming from the rooftop below caught Selene's attention - the intensity level was not something that was natural of sunlight playing off a shiny surface, and the direction where the light was coming from clearly indicates that it was some form of deliberately-generated signal. At least she was finally getting a lead after circling fruitlessly overhead for this long!

Homing in towards where the signal came from, the corporate heiress got her Wyvern to swoop in on the rooftop, landing on an open space near where the source of the light signal - Star. Making a gentle landing, the Wyvern proceeded to lie down on its belly to allow its master to climb off its back as the corporate heiress slid down one of its wings, which felt surprisingly soft and smooth despite its leathery appearance. "Hello Star, you called?" Selene asked as she smoothed out her skirt slightly before walking over to where the photomancer was, her eyes resting on what had gotten Star's attention.

Star's intuition was bang on, because around the corner was a teary eyed Fuu, looking up at her by leaning backwards slightly, upside-down with her nose now pointing to the sky. She pressed a hand to her forehead to keep the afternoon sun out of her eyes.

"Oh its you..." She uttered dismally, pulling her chin back to her knees and making herself as small as possible. "G-G--Go away... and don't tell Jen-chan about this, will ya.."

About what excactly?

In her hands she held a paperback novel, where her thumb was keeping the page she was on like a bookmark. She opened the pages again and shook her head solemnly.

"Its... Just so sad... yaa.. I mean.. He's a Doctor!! and she's.. an... assassin!! IT'LL NEVER WORK OUT!!" She faced the book and yelled hysterically, before sobbing and wiping away genuine tears. "ahuu huu... I started reading this after Valentines, but people told me to get the frak out of the library... then they chased me out of the courtyard.. and out of the gazebo, and well.. I just can't figure out why, yaa!"

In petty frustration, she stood up and turned around to face her stranger of a roommate, only to spot Selene, her fellow sophomore comrade standing in the distance.

"is there a whole mob here too?"
She looked back at Star, before leaning around the corner, "Am I being chased off the rooftop, is that it, huh? Who else is there-- WHOA! A DRAGON!" She fell backwards onto her rump.

Star blinked. Just as she predicted, it was her roommate, and she was...crying over a romance novel? She stared for a moment, her violet eyes wide as she blinked at Fuu again, the usually wordy photomancer at a complete loss for words. She really had to hand it to her roommate. There weren't many people alive whose antics could put Star at a loss.

"I...um..."

Star quickly shook her head, snapping out of her trance and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I won't tell anyone about it," she said. "It does sound pretty sad..." She tried to make her voice sound sympathetic, when in reality, she didn't have any idea what Fuu meant by the doctor and the assassin, besides guessing that they were the main characters in her novel.

"Hey, Selene," said Star, turning her head to greet the British mage before turning back towards Fuu. "Well, you know, you were being kind of loud," she said, scratching the back of her head with her free hand.

"No one else will hear anything of it from me as well," Selene reassured the teary-eyed Fuu as she put her right hand into the air, indicating she was making this a solemn promise to keep it from the others, just like Fuu had asked. And just what was it that had gotten the country lass into her current emotional state? The corporate heiress glanced towards a paperback novel that Fuu had in her hands, and all the while she had a thumb between the pages, keeping it on a particular page to bookmark it.

"Its... Just so sad... yaa.. I mean.. He's a Doctor!! and she's.. an... assassin!! IT'LL NEVER WORK OUT!!" The village girl cried after reading the page she had bookmarked. A doctor and an assassin? To Selene it sounded like the premise of some adventure-romance involving what sounded like an ill-fated romance. While the corporate heiress has known what it felt like getting one's eyes watery after reading a story about star-crossed lovers, the horrors of war or really, any tragic scenario, she can't deny that Fuu's response was exaggerated, even though it was clear there was no exaggerated displays of emotion on Fuu's part - she sounded as genuine as one could be.

"ahuu huu... I started reading this after Valentines, but people told me to get the frak out of the library... then they chased me out of the courtyard.. and out of the gazebo, and well.. I just can't figure out why, yaa!" Selene tried not to laugh, even though she already sorta figured out why Fuu couldn't stay in the library, or in fact, anywhere with a crowd. If she acted like the way she did back in the library - it was no wonder she'd get chased out, and other students in the courtyard probably don't appreciate the hysterics either.

"It does sound pretty sad..." Star commented, sounding sympathetic towards the protagonists' situation, before taking notice of Selene. "Well, you know, you were being kind of loud," The photomancer returned Selene's greeting before turning back to Fuu just as the village girl noticed Selene - and along with the corporate heiress, her Wyvern, causing her to fall backwards onto her rump.

"Am I being chased off the rooftop, is that it, huh? Who else is there-- WHOA! A DRAGON!" she exclaimed.

"I get what you mean, but I figured the quickest way to the rooftop would be to fly up," Selene commented on Star's remark on being rather loud, what with the Wyvern and all, chuckling slightly before looking up at Fuu. "No worries, Fuu-chan, he's perfectly harmless unless I order him to attack, or if you attempt to harm me," Selene reassured Fuu on the beast being perfectly under her control and as such, completely harmless unless she gave the order to attack, or someone attempts to harm her.

"And I hate to break this to you, but I think I know why they chased you out of the library and the courtyard," Selene commented as she looked at Fuu, wondering if the other girl was ready to hear the rest.

Fuu knew Star to be a very chatty girl, or at the very least outspoken. She and Jen could make small talk all day together. While getting changed, doing their hair, doing their homework, practicing their training in their room, practicing how to beat up dirty perves while out of their room. They could chat through dry wall, Fuu assumed.

But as chatty as Star and Fuu both were, with each other, they were never really big on conversation.

Maybe two big mouths canceled each other out?

She sat there on her rump, with her hands planted on the floor of the roof, supporting her behind her back. One knee was raised and the other along the ground, letting the top part of her skirt wrinkle down towards her stomach. After a pause and a blank stare, Fuu suddenly looked up and said,

"Just hold on a minute, yaa. What do you mean I'm LOUD--?" But she was cut of by Selene who was using them words of hers to make the peace. Fuu sat up and listened, crossing her legs and folding her arms in front of her chest.
"Oh you do, do you?" She sounded suspecting, but all she really was, was interested, to hear some ideas why she wasn't allowed in those places. But at least Star and Selene weren't kicking her off the one spot she could read her novel, right? "Care to share, anyone~?"

"Let's see, how shall I put it?" Selene rested her hands on her hips as she looked around a bit, first at Fuu, then at Star. "But the thing is, if you've been crying this loudly while reading the novel in the library I'm not surprised they threw you out. Ditto for the courtyard, you're going to have to keep things more quiet," the corporate heiress explained to the village girl. And if she could be heard all the way from the rooftop, imagine what she might've sounded like when she was reading in the library - it was little wonder really that she got thrown out!

Star grinned slightly as Fuu began to interrogate Selene about why the heiress thought she had been kicked out of the library. As if that wasn't obvious enough. Star of course understood the reason why--being loud and disruptive was one of the things she would occasionally do to get a rise out of some of the bookworms she knew, like Damon. But with Star, her antics were a calculated move to affect the people around her however she wanted to, or at least a social experiment to see how they would react. With Fuu, there was no game. She did those things because that was simply who she was.

"People do tend to get angry if you're loud in the library," said Star, tucking a strand of bright blond hair behind her ear. "And we could hear you from all the way down there." To illustrate her point, the photomancer pointed down from the rooftop at the school below.

"Don't worry, I won't tell Jen. My lips are sealed~" Star drew one finger across her lips, miming a zipper. "That must be a really good book." She giggled slightly at the end of that statement.

By then Fuu had gone back to squatting in the corner beside the structure, holding her chest where Selene's delivery of the absolute truth had impaled her while resting a hand up against the wall with crocodile tears in her eyes.

"Really? From off the roof? I didn't know I was being THAT loud, yaa..." If that was the case then Jen might have already heard by now, what was the point in Star keeping it a secret! Fuu looked down at the book, and then up at Star. She stared for a moment before smiling, "Huh? Yeah, its really good." Fuu said with absolutely feeling. "I could almost totally see myself in it." She continued in a way that showed she was unaware she was just asking for a few raised brows in her listeners.

Like seriously, where did they expect her to fit in? The doctor character? Or the assassin character? Both seemed unlikely for the air brained schoolgirl.

"It was the first book I ever read from start to finish. It really moved me." She explained, standing up to her full height and holding it out for Star to take, if she wanted to see for herself. Although if she ever did read the book, their 'ill-fated' ending would be VERY different to how Fuu described earlier.

The truth was, Fuu still couldn't read most kanji letters and often had trouble with basic ones. She must have made the story up all in her head. Well for now the group didn't know any better, what she was holding in her hands was a tragic romance adventure novel.

"Selene-chan... Thanks for coming all the way up on your d...dragon for me. And all just for a false alarm, huh? eHeh..." She giggled nervously. Fuu was thinking back to the thumb tacks she found in her indoor-shoes. Textbooks from her desk would often go missing after recess. And the threatening message in her locker on Valentines day. Just the other day, her lucky frog phone charm turned up on her doorstep with sewing pins sticking out of it. She wondered if anyone else was having this problem too? "We gotta watch out for each other, hmm? It's really dangerous even in school these days, yaa." A breeze picked up through the roof as she cast her gaze up to the sky, with a pained smile.
