As per usual. Start the story with a boy wandering around aimlessly without any clear goal whatsoever. In this case, the boy turns out to be a hooded sixteen year old kid, strutting around the backside of the school taking in the worn down scenery around him. Quiet scenery is supposed to be calming, right? Not here though. It's chilling. Cold. And it has nothing to do with the fact that it's winter. It did more than just raising the hairs on his skin. It sent shivers down his spine, tingled his mind, gave him goosebumps...

Whatever.

He dismissed it as a side effect of being in the cold weather for too long. Not to mention, this isn't the first time he's been here. Granted, he was suspicious about this place the first time he's been here, but after coming here again and again just for the sake of it, he supposed it was nothing more than the spooky feeling this place gives. Kinda like how you enter a library, you feel a sense of law and order. Everyone is silent. You'll feel like a great someone or something will punish you with a terrible or unending wrath had you decide to even whisper.

Well, it's nothing like a library, but it's the same concept.

Sitting besides a stereo unit he found during his first roundabout, he pressed the play button, and out came a classic he recognized as Mack the Knife. Not that he especially liked classical songs. This one just happens to be in there. Sitting on the floor and leaning on the wall, he closed his eyes, enjoying the rhythmical disturbance of the air drumming his ear drum, while ignoring the cold shivering sensation that doesn't seem to want to stop no matter what he does.

...Okay, he admits it. This place is spooky.

The area began to turn dark, as if the light were being absorbed or eaten by something. The air turned cold and stagnate. Not the kind of frigid cold that the winter brought but a chill that sunk through clothes and froze the bones, the blood, and the spirit. A thick spiritual presence began to weigh down on the entire area.

~~~~~
"Thanatos.... I feel something in my bones.." Deus said tapping his charm. Black liquid spread outwards covering his body. His whole form was covered in deep black solid mass Slowly the sphere began to crack and shatter before exploding into hundreds of black feathers. He stood within. A skeleton covered in a black robe. And yet that skull seemed to be smiling with no lips.
"Let us find the lingering spirit Solomon Sama..."
~~~~~

A weeping voice could be heard near the boy. The air crew more heavy by the second. Flashes around him would reveal a pale white flash as something moved around him in circles. It floated gracefully in a continuous motion. Always just out of sight. It's weeping voice was easy to confuse for wind or the breeze. Even so it sounded like weeping.

~~~~~
The Grim Reaper stood atop a nearby building. His butler behind him. He reached up with his skeletal hand. "Thanatos!"
The man shifted, melting and changing. His body turned into a long black staff, and at the end was a wickedly curved metallic blade. All around it thick chains covered the staf. Their rattling could only be heard by spirits. It was the sound of an approaching Death. It was the sound of approaching death. Death to the dead, the grim reaper's legendary blade. And this one's name was Thanatos.
"Desperately clinging to life even after death, isn't it.. pathetic? I could say I'm just ending your suffering but even if you're enjoying yourself I'll still end you! He thrust his scythe out leaping down and searching for the spirit.
"Should have realized it's not normal,"
Well, nothing is normal here in the first place. And flying white intangible beings floating around him and disembodied weeping sound was definitely not normal. His senses, unaturally enough, was tingling. He's learned enough to know that whenever it happens, it meant that there's a great amount of supernatural activity going on around. Does this qualify as supernatural?
Pressing the stop button on the stereo unit, he stood up, eying the white object hovering around him. What are these, spirits? Ghosts, Monsters? Aliens? Urh.
One thing's for sure, they sure are annoying. "Get offa me," He muttered, swiping at the white smoke thing, fully knowing whats gonna happen next.
The area around them grew more and more dark. However something fundamental was changing. There was a weight that would be placed on the boy's heart. His deepest fears began to slowly be dredged up from within. His greatest sadness. An overwhelming sense of loneliness would swell within. It was a veritable gambit of negative emotions suddenly surging forward in the boy's heart. Meanwhile the spirit evaporated from it's ghostly form.
In the center of the floor black drops of goop began to squeeze through the floorboards. All over the black liquid pushed forward forming black streams of fluid along the floor. It slowly collected in the center twisting and bubbling before swelling into a large bulb. The bulb split along the middle pulling open to reveal what looked very much like a human eye with turned to the boy.
As the eye locked on the boy he'd feel a wash of intense sorrow and grief. His entire body would now be physically weight by it to the point that it'd be hard to even move. For most humans this level of intense spiritual torment often caused their wills to break and many times they'd kill them self. Of course most of them couldn't see the supernatural elements occurring. Even so only strong wills could resist the attack.
'Die!'
He said he expected it. Well, he did expect something, but he didn't expect this to happen.
He growled in annoyance at the swirling white material, staring at it with a look of loathing. In the end, he'd had enough. Someone just HAD to ruin his peace time. Turning around on the spot to leav-
"Hu...!"
It was sudden. Too sudden. He remembered from somewhere before that a surprise attack usually deals a whole lot more damage than an anticipated attack. Even more so when his mind wasn't prepared for a MENTAL attack. Worst of all, for someone who had never been against mental attacks before, the damage easily multiplies.
He fell on all four, his face contorted in fear, mouth agape in horror, sweating, breathing harder than ever, heart racing like he's been through a three kilometers non-stop marathon, shivering way too violently for the cold chilling air of winter.
This is rediculous... What's this feeling...? He could barely breath. His heart felt heavy, his limbs are limp from... fear? DARKNESS and terror engulfed him, sadness, loneliness-
Despairdespairdespairdespairdespairdespairdespairdespairdespairdespair
"FUCK THIS SHIT!!!!"
The booming yell pierced through the intensified DARKNESS like a speding lance, shattering the wall of terror that engulfed him, blasting through the discord like a mad bull charging through a wall of rodeos wearing all-red. "WHO DO YOU THINK I AM, HUH?!!??!!!" He jumped back to his feet, still sweating hard but now his face, instead of fearful, was livid. Full of anger and emitting a great aura of a man ready to massacre an entire town. Conveniently enough, he might as well massacre the entire city of Hyakuji.
"I AM THE RAGING RIVER!!! I HAVE BEEN THROUGH DEMONS (lies) MONSTERS (lies) AND ASSASSINS (truth)!!! I HAVE NO FEAR TOWARDS YOU, DISEMBODIED VOICE!!! SHOW YOUSELF AND FIGHT ME LIKE A MAN, COWARD!!!"
And as though his wish had been granted black goop, goo, or anything else with the same meaning began to materialize itself in front of him, forming a giant black sphere that turns out to be a giant eyeball staring right at his face.
...
*kicks eyeball*
The eye exploded under his foot before turning and morphing into a long black arm. The hand gripped his leg. Slowly from the floor more black goo rose forming into a long haired female. Her eyes were dark and vi-.
Deus cut her head off so it didn't really matter.
The scythe blade sliced through the creature's neck causing it to melt back into liquid. Deus himself was obviously disguised as the classic image of the grim reaper. White bleached bones covered in black robes. He looked with empty sockets, their dark depths held a gaze despite containing nothing. He turned, the cold view fell on the boy. He spoke, his voice was like the rasp of air directly into the boy's mind. The skeleton itself had no lips or vocal chords to make any sort of noise.
"What are you doing here?"
He turned raising Thanatos.
"Be ready.. and steel your heart.. It's not done yet." He said waiting on the creature to emerge once more. "That was just a facade. Spirits often uses their powers to impose images or ideas. But the true spirits lie in another plane.." He kept alert. He felt it. But the thing was in hiding nearby. Perhaps it'd felt his approach?
... HOLY SHIT IT'S A GRIM REAPER!!! He fell back on his bottom, staring at the cold black hollow socket of the living skull, eyes wide and mouth agape out of the unorthodox combination of horror and excitement. I mean, it's not everyday that you get to see a Grim Reaper in broad daylight (though it's pretty dark at the moment, for some reason). Part of him was wondering whether he was actually in thousands of tiny dissolved flesh after the black eyeball exploded like grenade, sending black goop everywhere.
He had expected the moving skeleton in black cloak to say "I have come for your soul," then he would fight with him to the death for his life. Apparently, that's not gonna happen, as the skeleton turned its back towards him after giving him a warning in a rasping voice that seemed to originate from his own head rather than the skeleton's mouth (which took him quite a while to realize that it was the Grim who was talking and not his imagination). "Hold it, hold it, hold it," Said River, massaging his forehead. "So you're not here for my life?"
"Not yet." He said drawing the scythe up to his chest. "One thing at a time." He said drawing the scythe over his head. "Hidden behind the veil.." He reached into his chest and drew out a golden coin. He turned to the boy and reached into his chest, phasing into it and drawing out a second coin. "Ferryman's toll.."
His scythe shrank down into a singlehanded weapon. The top of it's blade had two holes in it which he slid the coins into. The coins began to glow before the blade of the scythe suddenly turned into brilliant blue and violet crystal. He turned to the boy and eyed him. "Interesting spirit..." He said before the scythe returned to it's full size. However now the entire large blade was crystal with flowing blue and violet energy within.
"STYX CROSS!" He rared slashing in front of him. The area he cut became black and white, all of the color drained from it. Slowly the pure absence of color spread outwards from where he cut until all around them there was only black and white and shades of gray. Meanwhile the sounds of their world also became more and more distant. Slowly the only sound left was the dry sound of the winds blowing over the empty world.
Grim moved quickly from where he was until he emerged outside. Outside it was the same as in. No sounds, no birds, nothing but groaning wind. However slowly a new sound emerged. The sound of a dull groan. Deus turned spotting a large entity.
It was vaguely humanoid but it's body was entirely composed of energy. However at it's edges it simply frayed. It didn't have a clean line where it stopped being and the rest of the world began. It looked like a smeared painting. However Grim knew what it really was. "It's an ancient.." He gripped his scythe tighter. "A spirit that's clung to this world too long and lost it's sense of self. It didn't have a strong enough will to resist the erosion of it's soul. It's forgot why it clung to this world, It doesn't even remember what it is anymore.."
The creature turned towards the duo slowly. It's arms became longer and longer, splitting into multiple arms. Slowly it's body was raised into the air as it began to walk on it's enormous arms. It's legs melted into one long tail with a bladed edge. A face bulged from his misection, screaming out in some strange soung that came from within their own bodies as much as from the actual mouth. The wailing noise sounded like rage and pain and confusion all at once.
"They're uh.. pretty dangerous."
The tail arced back before flying forward to slam into the duo.
As the massive bladed tail swung toward them, his mind was working frantically. Franky he never had to deal with these sort of things before. What is that thing, ghost? Demons? Shadow creatures? Pure negative energy? Sure, he's had to deal with quite a lot recently. Three wizard assassins, one superhero wizard, ... eh... Right. He hadn't dealt with much, after all.
Which is even more reason for him to be more than flustered at the current situation. It's important for him to know just what the hell is that thing, because his Barrier Magic is (annoyingly) very specialized. Even if Mr. Grim here did say that that... thing is an ancient spirit or some sort, he's never had chance to deal with anything like a spirit... If that's the case...
A gigantic five meter radius black Magic Barrier, designed to block anything flashed into existence right over their head. The massive bladed tail smashed it with a deafening roar, sending a powerful shock wave that ripped the air apart, the black magic circle shook, pulsating as it held the massive pressure.
Perhaps I should say this. The All-Purpose Magic Barrier can block anything, but it can't block everything. And the fact was apparent as the gigantic black circle filled with glyphs and symbols started to crack, crack, crack-
SMAAAAAASSSSSHHH!!!!
The entire circle shattered like some gigantic circular glass, sending showers of sparkling black solid that bounced over the ground before dissolving to nothingness. All that lasted for less than three seconds, but that less than three seconds delay was enough to allow him to jump away from the tail's collision course. He skidded across the black and white pavement halting to a stop a short distance away.
"Alright, Grim.If you don't intend to reap me in the next couple of minutes, perhaps we can talk about this later over a cup of tea?" He said, growling.
Grim moved quickly drawing his scythe up. "There's only one way. He have to slit open his body and pull out the person contained within.. I need his coins to reap him. But his 'self' is lost within his formless shape." He said quickly as he moved out of the way of the striking tail. His allies barrier slowed it down but it wasn't good enough. They'd have to remove that tail if he wanted to get anywhere near the core of the beast.
The beast moved rapidly to the side, it's eight legs giving it unusual mobility. It rushed over clutching onto the building and raising itself off the ground so that it was perched above the duo to continue slamming it's tail down on top of them aiming to slash right through them.
Grim darted along the ground before leaping full bodily towards the building. He clutched the windowsill for the second floor and pulled himself up before leaping over and coming crashing down with his blade. He slashed downward through the leg sending a spray of black liquid. He drug the blade downward and crashed into the ground. He rolled over and landed back to his feet where he drew his blade above his head.
The creature roared swinging it's tail around. "OKAY, USE SOMETHING TO STOP THE TAIL! I JUST NEED A SECOND!" He roared out to the other boy. He was in prime real estate. Between the severed leg and the tail. From here he could strike. He'd need his 'ally', if you could call it that, to immobilize the tail thought because at this range he was a sitting duck. But there was no time to flesh out plans. They'd have to pull this off quickly with their own skills, otherwise they'd just be sitting ducks for the agile beast.
"Just the tail, eh? Simple enough," the hooded boy with flesh and bones instead of just bones smirked as he crouched on the ground before leaping to the sides, barely avoiding the lashing bladed tail of the black creature that tore through the ground, ripping up the gray soil like paper. He skidded hard, looking straight at the creature searching for a way to get close to it. But even as he did so-
SWISH!!
The bladed tail came flying swiftly right at him, aimed right at his solar plexus. The sharp pointed edge of the tip of the tail flashed menacingly, looking as deadly, heck, even more deadly than that of a speeding lance flying right at his face. At the very least a lance have a light enough tangible mass that his pure Physical Barrier can stop it dead on its track. But this, THIS, this is nothing more than some massive negative spiritual energy. In terms of mass, disregarding the type, a gigantic bladed tail is no doubt much more massive. Of course, had the tail been a solid tangible physical mass, he could easily deflect, if not stop it with his Physical Barrier. But NO, it just HAD to be something made out of spirit. A LOT of spirit.
Yes, I know I'm repeating points. Shut up.
He can't waste energy stopping the gigantic bladed tail coming right at him. The big one he just casted before, though the effect was not apparent physically, had drained him a large amount. (He can think that much in less than a second?) To conserve his energy, he improvised.
Blue lines traced over the ground under him, forming a magic circle that covered his entire figure before glowing very brightly, reducing the gravity within the perimeter of the circle to a fifth of the Earth's gravity. The giant organic/spirit/whatever blade was only about a foot from his face, before he leaped up, high up into the air, aided by the Fractional Gravity Magic and his three-times-stronger-than-a-normal-human legs. The tail smashed through the ground with such force that sent rocks and dirt flying everywhere, sending a powerful shock wave that rippled his silvery white hair. While he was in the air, and the tail was still on the ground, in less than half-a-millisecond, he gained an inspiration.
He formed yet another of that black All-Purpose Magic Barrier, albeit this one being a tad bit smaller than the one before. The magic circle flashed into existence in front of him. Not wasting any time, he placed his hand on the magic circle, and grasped it. He pulled his hand back, and in his hand the black magic circle. He can't waste any time, though. This might be his only chance. Mustering up all his strength, he flung his hand forward, throwing the sharp edged four meter diameter magic circle at high speed right at the bladed tail, more like a giant circular saw blade than anything else.
Just to stay safe, right after he threw the makeshift shuriken, he formed a weak Physical Barrier right below him, forming a platform for him to stand on in the air where he can observe everything happening down below from the safety above.
The blade let loose a grinding noise before finally slowing to a halt. It's two blades trapping the tail to the ground between them, having dug deep into it's dense hide. The tail was forced down into the ground.
"Perfect." Grim rushed in drawing his scythe over his head as he leaped up into the air. He drew the blade over his head, it's deep black metalic color drawing in the light around it. For a moment things seeemed to slow down as he pushed the blade forward into the beasts face in it's midsection. He drew it up forcefully before the face split along the line he'd cut and from the midst of the beast a body fell out covered in thick fluid.
The body of the beast turned into pure black energy before suddenly flooding into the faceless flat flesh on it's head. The black energy swirled and shifted flowing into the 'face that wasn't a face' forming into a mask. Grim grabbed it before slamming it down onto the 'face that wasn't a face'. An explosive force resisted him, spraying out black electricity. He groaned forcing it down."REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE. REMEMBER YOUR NAME!" Grim roared out. "REMEMBER! YOU ARE KEIJI!" Suddenly everything stopped, the two became one and the creatures soul once more resembled a human.
Grim reached into the spirit's chest pulling out two coins.
He ejected his and the boy's coin, which instantly flew back to where they belonged, and placed in the man's two coins. He slashed horizontally and slowly a door to a place full of a warm inviting light opened. The soul before them slowly faded, eroding away into nothing. The world around them also returned. Color faded back into reality. The sounds of moving water, birds, animals, and distant sounds of people.
The reaper, meanwhile, remained in the other world. Completely vannished from the boys sights.
As the black and white world disappears, even the Physical Barrier under his feet dissolved away. Which, as one would expect...
"W-W-WOOOAAAAAHHH!!!" He fell though the now colorful atmosphere (colorful...?) at high speed, his arms flailing in desperation to grab anything to prevent him from falling to his death. Ironic, he just met Grim earlier who said that this time is not up yet. Or course, Grim here might be too punctual.
But he's saved, as his hand grabbed the edge of a yellowish-brown solid circular object that hovered two meters from the ground. Sweating slightly as he stared at the ground below him. That bastard Grim, should've warned him about this earlier. The hovering Physical Barrier dissolved to nothingness, letting him fall to the ground with a heavy gong. Okay... bad idea. Now his legs felt like noodles. He fell down in a fetal position, clutching his legs and muttered curses after curses at the unrelated Grim.
Okay, enough acting. There's no one here to watch your performance anyway. He grumbled as he got to his feet, brushing off the dirt on his pants and sweater. He looked around, things have returned back to how it was before. No black and white background, no evil spirit monster, no Grim Reaper, things are pretty much... normal.
...Not really, though. For some reason, the spine-tingling sensation from before did not go away...
Deus yawned loudly sitting up from on top of the roof of a nearby building. He placed his hands behind him scratching his head sleepily. "What the..?" HE said surprised, looking down at the boy. He leaped off the roof landing with a thud. He walked over tucking his hands into his pockets, brushing his hair back. "Tcheh.... What are YOU doing back here?" He said calmly.
In truth Deus was interested in this kid. Not really in any sense of his value but just curious what his deal was and how he could see that spirit's manifested form. He wondered if maybe this guy was another spiritually adept. If so... well maybe he was the key to Deus finally getting out of his role as a Grim Reaper? Only time would tell. For now he'd just stoke the flames a bit.
He glanced around with his blue eyes. lazily looking over the ground before looking back to the boy with raised brow. "It's not exactly a nice place to hang out. These buildings are condemned for a reason, kid." He said with his typical condescending attitude. As if he, a normal student, were any more allowed to be back here than the other boy.
"And who the hell are you?"
Cold. Is that really the first thing you say to someone you just met? Speaking of which, where did he come from? Yes, he knows that guy just jumped off fom the roof. But more importantly, was he here the whole time? He was pretty sure that no one was here when he came in.
And man, he's tall.
He eyed the blue-haired guy with a look of curiosity before turning away, shamelessly picking his nose. "What, you're one of the student council or something?" He said scathingly, flicking away anything that he managed to dig out. Maybe it's his own imagination, but... is he reacting from being near the guy? Though faint, could feel it. And it's even more of a big deal if he could actually feel it, since his perception towards anything that could be classified as supernatural is supposed to be very weak. If he could feel it, was it possible that this guy in front of him posesses some deathly powers or something?
"If it's really the case of this place being out of bound, then perhaps you should put a bit more effort in keeping kids out, don't ya think?" He said, still under the impression that the blue-haired guy was someone of high authority. Not that he cared about authority chain, anyway.
