"Hmph," said Valefor at Nickle's response, turning away from the young man. Despite Nickle's comment, his feathers did ruffle slightly, a movement that started from the tops of his wings down their sides and ending at their tips. "Given your attitude, I'd hate to see anything that might result from your current relationship with Chizu," he said. Young powerful elemancers with cocky attitudes, bad tempers, and a disregard for authority? He had dealt with enough of those in his time to never want to have to do that again. And given that Chizu's family line contained traces of electromancy at this point, chances were good that at least one of them would become an electromancer. Perfect. He watched the interaction between Nickle and Erin with a critical eye, watching the girl as the electromancy instructor taught her how to use the Materia. Convenient things, he had to admit. And he would give it to the electromancer that he had invented them. But he would not be allowing any elemancers to acquire his Red Materia anytime soon, unless they passed his test. He kept his eyes on Erin. Despite his attitude, Valefor was in fact protective over this tower and the elemancers that trained in it, and inherently distrustful of electromancers. |

"Y-you shouldn't speak to Valefor like that..." Erin told Nickle, hesitantly. Valefor was someone she respected, but as an instructor, Nickle was also someone she felt she should show respect to. She felt a little caught between having to disrespect one or the other by saying that or not saying that to Nickle, so she left her comments at that. Erin looked down at the materia, trying to feel the beat from it that Nickle had mentioned. So I have to synch it with my heartbeat...? She thought, lightly pressing the marble against her chest, just over her heart. She closed her eyes for a moment, and soon enough, the yellow materia sank into her body. "Wow..." Erin said, surprised "It didn't hurt at all." Maybe with this... Erin thought to herself, I can be a little more helpful...if just a little... Edited by Erin, Feb 28 2011, 02:45 AM.

Nickle looked at Valefor for a moment with a cocked eyebrow. Result from his relationship with Chizu? Surely he wasn't hinting towards children! Had Chizu said something to the wind aeons about such a touchy subject!? Nickle hadn't really thought about such things, especially not out loud around Chizu. Truth be told although their relationship was stable and in a rather good place at the moment, Nickle had only hinted to Chizu about a possible engagement after she graduated and even then he was unsure whether to bring it up again around her. While mature in a lot of matters, love was still something Chizu was relatively new to, let along marriage and- Nickle heard a little voice reprimand him. He looked down at Erin. The girl had told him off. Nickle felt a little bit embarressed although he didn't show it. Maybe he had been acting a little too arrogant. Still, he was very impressed with Erin. She was usually so meek and then here she was standing up for one of her elementals. Nickle grinned, rubbing the back of his neck, "i suppose you're right Erin-chan. I'll try be a bit more politer next time." He watched as Erin let the materia slide inside of her. It came quite naturally to her. "That's very good Erin. When I first tried to do it, it took me about three tries before I got it right." Nickle then grinned, "Why don't we give it a test run? I'm going to hide a few invisible pockets of electrons in the area. You'll have to sense then out and point to them. Also, just to show you how heightened your sense are, let's see who can find them first, you or Valefor." With that, Nickle out stretchs his hands to either side of him releasing the electrons in small invisible balls around the room, holding them in place once he was done. |

Valefor looked up as the girl scolded the electromancer for him, nodding his head appreciatively in her direction. Truth be told, he didn't actually need it, particularly not from her. He was perfectly capable of defending his own honor. But it was a nice gesture, and Erin was polite, one of the things most of the youth today seemed to be lacking. He would tell her later that her attack had been good. He didn't show it, but it had damaged some of his feathers. He paused and watched as the girl absorbed the Materia. Why did seeing that give him an uneasy feeling. Surely it wasn't the Materia itself, since he had been around enough of those things to know that there was nothing sinister about them. He had never felt this before, and it worried him. Was there something wrong with the Materia? He glanced towards Nickle. No. The electromancer was still a member of this group, and an instructor. He wouldn't knowingly hurt a student, even if it was a student of a different element. And that wasn't even counting the mess he would be in with Chizu if he did hurt one of her students. If there was something wrong here, it wasn't his fault. "Very well," he said, closing his eyes and expanding his senses throughout the room to look for the electrons. In reality, however, he was watching for the telltale signs of Erin activating the Materia. He would need to study this further. |

"I-I'm competing with Valefor..?" Erin asked, surprised. She didn't really expect to win, but she figured it was just to see how close she came. "A-alright..." She closed her eyes and put her hands together. From Nickle's explanation of how materia worked, she figured, or at least hoped, that activating the materia was something that would come naturally. She remembered during the heartless invasion when Jameson had given her the Ixa Knuckle and then never told her how to use it and she hoped that nothing like that happened ever again. She began sensing the air in the room, looking for the disturbances. She had synced the pulse of the materia to her heartbeat, so she tried to activate the materia through her heart. Before, trying to sense shapes by air was somewhat coarse. She could see humanoid silhouettes, but not clearly enough to tell people apart. But when the materia's pulse started to course through her, the difference was amazing. She would see just as well, maybe better than with her eyes, in 360 degrees. She could make out Nickle's and Valefor's forms perfectly, and even Chocobo's lower in the tower. And there was even more. She knew that sound was transferred by vibrations in air particles, but she had always thought that it was too subtle and too fast for her to pick up with aeromancery. But she could actually sense the vibrations in the air particles and translate them into sound in her mind, almost like projecting her eardrums to far away places. The Sylphs were talking about Nickle on the first floor and she had to stop herself from eavesdropping. Wow... Erin could only think. It was like she was seeing a whole new world. She was actually so distracted that she almost forgot she was supposed to be searching for pockets of charged particles. "One is directly behind me...about two meters off the ground and a meter away from me... She said out loud, finding what would normally have been a minor disturbance in a few seconds. The room was only so large, so all she was doing was a circular combing through of the air, spiraling outwards from her body. But using the materia was a bit uncomfortable. There was a growing feeling in her chest of something like a coil wrapping around her heart. It wasn't painful persay, but it was definitely something she didn't enjoy much. But she didn't complain. She figured it was something that everyone put up with, and she didn't want to get scolded by Valefor for complaining over a minor uncomfort. To her, it was a small tradeoff for the power that the materia gave her. |

Nickle nodded and began a small clap. "Well done Erin, right on the money." he looked at Valefor, having a hunch the Aeon had pulled a punch or two back there. Still, he was pretty impressed at how quickly Erin was taking to her materia. For others it sometimes took a bit longer, but that was probably because they were her direct opposite. Violent, brash and running forward and missing all the small little things along the way. Erin was different in that regard, as she took her time, felt things out, smelt a flower or as she made her way forward in training her powers. "Now for a bonus point, can you see if you can beat Valefor again by finding the remaining 2 electron pockets at once?" Given her adeptness in using her power to sense, plus the addition of the materia, it wouldn't be too tricky. Nickle was watching as it activate, shining a little glow over her heart and through her skin. Nickle couldn't sense materia like her normally could with other things like electricity, but the glow seemed to have an odd pulsation to it. Erin probably wasn't entirely synched with it yet, it was a normal thing that happened to everyone. It would take a little longer for it to naturally beat with her, as oppossed to her having to focus it. |

Valefor nodded as Erin found the pockets of electrons, seeming to accept his defeat. In reality, he hadn't even been looking. Instead, he had been observing her. Her energies seemed odd, almost out of synch with the materia that she was using, but that wasn't uncommon in new users. Still, he couldn't shake the uneasy feeling. Erin was showing all typical signs, but he couldn't help but feel as if he was overlooking something. Was he just overthinking things? He had never been too close to the younger elemancers before. "I won't be going easy on you this time," he said to her as the electromancer started up the challenge again. This time, he intended to compete, if only to see just how acute the materia made her senses. Maybe that would help him get to the root of the problem. He closed his eyes and sent his senses out throughout the room, feeling the wind there. It didn't take him too long to find one of the pockets of charge. He could feel it when he focused, almost like a taint in the air, the sharp tang of ozone so clear to him that he could almost taste it. "Seven o'clock from me, about five meters away," he said, naming one position. Now, to see if Erin could find the other. |

Erin kept her eyes closed, although still acknowledging Valefor's nod that she sensed solely through the small movement of air that it caused. She had never really been the competitive type. She wasn't as concerned with beating Valefor as seeing what she could do with her newfound power. She focused more and more on different parts of the room, looking for the feeling of sharpness, the taste of copper on her tongue that she got when she sensed it. The other two pockets had been in open air, but she didn't find the third pocket near the center of the room. She began sweeping the outer edges of the space, along the walls and the ceiling, and sure enough, the charge was in the very last place she looked. "The top of the room, just below the roof, in the very center." Erin said, with more than a slight hint of enthusiasm in her voice. She remembered the crescent lightbulb mission where the electricity in the air had been so thick that using aeromancery was like trying to swim in molasses. But these disturbances had been so slight that she didn't think she could have found them at all if it wasn't for the materia. It was only now that she opened her eyes, a bit short of breath. "That was incredible..." She put her hand over her heart, feeling the pulse of the materia alongside her own heartbeat. She had hoped that the uncomfortable coiling feeling would go away after she stopped using it, but it still remained. It'll probably go away after a while... she figured, not wanting to ruin the atmosphere by complaining about something. She had been unsure of herself before, but now she seemed much more cheerful. With a blue or a green materia, she might have been able to hit harder or faster, but neither of those could have compared to seeing an entirely new world. "Yellow was...definitely the right color!" |
